The goal of postgraduate medical education shall be to produce competent specialists and/or Medical teachers. i. ii. iii. iv. v. who shall recognize the health needs of the community, and carry out professional obligations ethically and in keeping with the objectives of the national health policy who shall have mastered most of the competencies, pertaining to the speciality, that are required to be practiced at the secondary and the tertiary levels of the health care delivery system; who shall be aware of the contemporary advance and developments in the discipline concerned; who shall have acquired a spirit of scientific inquiry and is oriented to the principles of research methodology and epidemiology; and who shall have acquired the basic skills in teaching of the medical and paramedical professionals;

The period of training for the award of various postgraduate degrees or diplomas shall be as follows:
(1) Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) The period of training for obtaining these degrees shall be three completed years including the period of examination. (2) Diplomas DMRT The period of training for obtaining a postgraduate Diploma shall be two completed years including the examination period.

GENERAL OBJECTIVES OF POST-GRADUATE TRAINING EXPECTED FROM STUDENTS AT THE END OF POST-GRADUATE TRAINING At the end of the postgraduate training in the discipline concerned the student shall be able to; i. ii. iii. iv. v. vi. Recognize the importance to the concerned speciality in the context of the health needs of the community and the national priorities in the health section. Practice the speciality concerned ethically and in step with the principles of primary health care. Demonstrate sufficient understanding of the basic sciences relevant to the concerned speciality. Identify social, economic, environmental, biological and emotional determinants of health in a given case, and take them into account while planning therapeutic, rehabilitative, preventive and primitive measure/strategies. Diagnose and manage majority of the conditions in the speciality concerned on the basis of clinical assessment, and appropriately selected and conducted investigations. Plan and advise measures for the prevention and rehabilitation of patients suffering from disease and disability related to the speciality.

Demonstrate skills in documentation of individual case details as well as morbidity and mortality rate relevant to the assigned situation. Demonstrate empathy and humane approach towards patients and their families and exhibit interpersonal behaviour in accordance with the societal norms and expectations. Play the assigned role in the implementation of national health program, effectively and responsibly. Organize and supervise the chosen/assigned health care services demonstrating adequate managerial skills in the clinic/hospital or the field situation. Develop skills as a self-directed learner, recognize continuing education needs; select and use appropriate learning resources. Demonstrate competence in basic concepts of research methodology and epidemiology, and be able to critically analyze relevant published research literature. Develop skills in using educational methods and techniques as applicable to the teaching of medical/nursing students, general physicians and paramedical health workers. Function as an effective leader of a health team engaged in health care, research or training.

GUIDELINES TO RESIDENTS / REGISTRARS / TUTORS :

1. Postgraduate curriculum shall be competency based. 2. Learning in postgraduate program shall be essentially autonomous and self directed 3. The major components of the Postgraduate curriculum shall be : a. Theoretical knowledge b. Practical and clinical skills c. Thesis skills. d. Attitudes including communication skills. e. Training in research methodology. 4. Academic Programs Shall be grouped as Institute Academic Program (IAD) and Department Academic Program (DAP) and Shall be conducted in Compliance to the Subject Syllabus. 5. The Institute Academic Program (IAD) are :a. InterDepartmental Multidisciplinary Seminars b. Clinico Pathological Meetings c. Symposium d. Guest Lectures e. CMEs f. Conferences g. MDC 6. Departmental Academic Programs (DAP) are :a. Bedside Clinics (Case Presentations Major & Minor Case) b. Subject Seminars c. Journal Review Meeting d. Subject Lectures by Faculty e. Practical Exposure f. Teaching Skill Teaching of UG Course BSc Courses and other Paramedical Course g. Dissertation 7. As per RGUHS / MCI / DNB requirements students must maintain their Annual Log book and record and update the relevant activities and get it signed by their relevant faculty, Guide, Head of the Unit and HOD regularly as stipulated in the Syllabus. 8. Students are advised to adhere to the schedule dates fixed in the academic program. 9. Postponement of Scheduled teaching Programs is strictly not encouraged. Any postponement shall be permitted only for valid reasons only and shall be permitted in writing by the Respective HOD & Director and this postponement shall not overlap the other candidates prefixed dates (the other candidates should continue as scheduled) 10. Candidate taking permission to postpone his/her topic should make efforts to request his colleague student to take over his topic (or exchange his topic & date) and make presentation on the scheduled dates. Moderators absence shall not be reason for student to postpone his presentation, The moderator who is scheduled to be absent on the respective students presentation date should delegate his responsibility to his colleague and ensure the program continues. 3

11. Students presenting : should carry with him/her the relevant Evaluation Form in duplicate available in the Syllabus (Evaluation Form for Seminar / Journal review presentation / Clinical & ward work / Clinical Presentation / Evaluation of Teaching Skills / Dissertation presentation ) and get it signed by his designated moderator (Faculty) after his presentation and document the same in their Log Book and the 2nd copy of the same should be attached in a common Department File Teaching Activity 12. The Students and staff shall assemble for the Academics in the Designated Hall, at the Designated time and the Presentation shall start sharp on schedule irrespective of the presence of any faculty, moderator or students. 13. All the Students and the Teaching Faculty shall attend the Scheduled Teaching Program and should Sign an attendance register one meant for IAD & one in the respective department for the DAP. 14. During the officially scheduled Academic activity period, regarding the unscheduled Patients attending the Hospital, if they are requiring immediate doctors attention (as identified by the respective Staff Nurse & GDD), Such patients shall be Seen by and Shall Receive Symptomatic & Supportive Treatment From the General Duty Doctor and shall be admitted in the Treatment Room. The respective Faculty & Staff shall take over such patients from the Treatment room immediately after the Academic time shall and give the necessary treatment. 15. Teaching Program Central Register shall be maintained & any teaching program falling on a Scheduled Week Days Holiday will be Planned to be Conducted on Day Prior or the Next day (This shall be corrected by the Academic In charge of the Department or the Institute) 16. The students making presentation should use the general guidelines for presentation and get it corrected in writing with the designated Moderator 1(one) week prior to the presentation, if the students do not adhere to this routine the Moderator Faculty can make a note of this violations in the evaluation form and score the form as he/she deems suitable and notify the HOU / HOD for advice in writing. 17. General Guidelines for Presentation: a. The presentation should be planned with-in the stipulated time generally 60min & the last 15 minutes shall be dedicated for Discussion. Discussion during presentations is not encouraged. All questions shall be directed to the presenter and his fellow colleague students (as indicated) in the last 15 minutes. b. The Students shall prepare their own presentation on OHP sheets of PPT slide if LCD projector & PC is available. Students are discouraged form using ready made presentation material available on the internet . c. The presentation of the Topic Allotted : i. The objective of the student presentation, is to demonstrate to the faculty & his peers, as to what the student has learnt and understood about the topic or subject given for presentation (students are advised not to copy internet material or copy some one elses presentation ), ii. Presentation should be made in a systematic & scientific pattern iii. The use of ready made guidelines and flow charts are discourage, in this context the student are encouraged to read the recommended book of Principles & Practice of the respective specialty, Reference books & make relevant review of literature. The student should develop and present his/her understanding of the subject, his concepts and perception of patient management, Investigation, Treatment, Multimodality management & specialty related management, Morbidity & Mortality issues and Survival rates with various combinations. iv. For the Presentation the Number of slides and its contents should be scientifically tailored to the topic allotted and the time allocated, allowing sufficient time for discussion. 4

v. Presentation should be made in sequence, point wise & use Diagrams and pictures as indicated. vi. The respective departments will officially recognize certain text books as standard for the PG training and other books & journal articles as reference. vii. The students are encouraged to come up with newer ideas which can translate into better treatment outcomes. 18. DAP: Topic for Journal Club Shall be given to the Student Scheduled in the List by the Faculty of the Unit in which the student is currently working. The Student shall discuss the article for presentation 2 weeks in advance and finalize the actual article to be presented 1 week before the date of Presentation and Notify the Abstract with the Journal Details on the Department Notice board and Circulate the same, Students presenting should carry with him/her the relevant Evaluation Form in duplicate get it signed by his unit Faculty. 19. DAP: PG students will be scheduled to take classes for the BSc Courses regularly and their teaching skill will be evaluated by the Faculty Designated for the day. BSc Classes (Both Theory & Practical) will also be take by the Respective Technologist KMIO Staff of the Concerned Department . 20. PG students are advice to make a Synopsis of the Seminars, Symposiums, CMEs , Conferences attended by them and maintain a copy of he same in the Log book and the department file. 21. DAP: Internal Examinations shall be conduced for the Topics Covered every 6 months and the marks obtained shall be displayed in the Notice Board of the Respective Department. 22. DAP: Case Presentations in the Ward Shall be allotted by the respective Unit Heads and Bedside Clinics be conducted regularly, Necessary evaluation forms shall be used. Training for Major Case Presentation : 30 -45 min for case history taking , 15 min for Minor Case History Taking , Presentation 15 minutes. (Activity 1 per week) other than routine ward presentations. 23. Annually a Common PG Orientation Programme shall be conducted in the first 2 weeks of students joining KMIO as per RGUHS intake schedule and in the next 1 week a Respective Departmental PG Orientation Programme shall be conducted. 24. The Respective Departments Annual Academic Schedule and Time table of teaching schedule shall be drafted by Academic Committee member of Academic of respective department in concurrence with the respective HOD and a Copy of the same shall be forwarded to the Central Academic Programme File in the Academic Section for Compilation and doccumentation. 25. DAP: IAP: All the Departments having students in the respective specialty (UG & PG) shall in the beginning of the term Draw an Annual Departmental Teaching Programme and Draw a Weekly Time Table in the which the Department Work including Academics (Practical and theory section) are charted out shall be addressed in the following format, Keeping in mind the routine patient care. 26. Teaching Programme for WHO Fellows and Doctors PG/UG posted from outside: The academic sections in-charge & the Doctors in-charge of WHO fellows Academics Shall Compile all the PG/ DM / MCh Teaching programmes and Incorporate the Relevant Schedule into the WHO Academic Programme, as per Fellowship programme syllabus. 27. Other Proposed Academic Programmes / Activities: Quiz , MCQ, Case Scenario Problem Solving, Visiting Professor / Faculty,
