in the Past Tense and Past Participle of Regular Verbs

ESTIMATED TIME: 60 minutes INSTRUCTIONS: First you must remember your pronunciation of regular verbs in past
tense as it would be the past participle. Try narrating or saying out the activities you did yesterday night. Then, write down the verbs you used in the past tense. Read them to yourself. Now, that you thought about it proceed to Section I and do the exercise to check your pronunciation very quickly.

SECTION I
There are three ways of pronouncing the regular past tense - ed endings. Read the examples, and then write the words in the correct column. arrived helped packed tried needed sounded discussed turned listened disappointed educated skilled washed trained passed

SECTION II In the English language there are VOICED sounds which mean we feel a vibration when we pronounce the sound because it is produced with vibrating the vocal cords. If you place the palm of your hand on your throat while making the sound you will feel the vibration. Then, there are the VOICELESS sounds which are those that do not vibrate. So, if you place your palm on your throat you will not feel any vibration.
The following is a very nice straightforward explanation of what ending sounds (consonants or vowels go with each of the three phonemes.

Pronunciation rules for the Simple Past Tense of Regular Verbs 1. The regular simple past always ends in the letter -d. There are, however, three different pronunciations for the final sound of the regular simple past.

INTERPRETATION OF RESULTS

If you have 24 correct answers you really worked fine and now you can use the correct pronunciation when necessary. If you have 18 to 23 you are doing fine. Keep working on the particular or particular sound you need. If you have 12 to 17 you need to read and work on the rules in SECTION II until you have mastered them. If you have less than 11 you need to read, work and ask for assistance from other sources.
