money as we can, and every minor is required to raise $100 to stay a full 24 hours, explained Caitlin Everhart, co-president for the 2009-2010 officer board of the ACS. The event will begin with a survivor lap, which is a lap around the track for people who have survived cancer. There will be an annual event called the Luminaria Ceremony which celebrates the lives of those who have fought and survived cancer. Luminaria bags, which are sold to raise money, can be purchased either in memory of someone who has passed away from cancer, or in honor of a cancer patient who is still alive. The event will pay tribute to those who have been lost to the disease. A closing ceremony will include a fight back pledge to continue to spread the ACS message of hope and cancer awareness. The purpose of the event is for children to understand the dangers of cancer and to promote cancer awareness within communities across the United States. Many different organizations and clubs have raised funds through Relay for Life. ACS has held fundraisers in conjunction with organizations such as DB 4 Youth and Lions/ Leos Roaring Team. Jennifer Anderson, the Chair for the Diamond Bar Relay For Life, commented, I love volunteering for the American Cancer Society and I know that everything that I do for them is making a difference in the lives of cancer patients and their friends and families everywhere, It's a lot of work but its definitely worth it in the end.

Concern for student safety has recently increased after two major incidents occured in which students were harmed. Students are advised to always be aware of their surroundings. Iris Li News Editor Elizabeth Lee Asst. News Editor A male student from Diamond Bar High School was involved in a car accident on Evergreen Springs Drive after school on Tuesday, May 5, around 3:15 p.m. The student, who was a pedestrian, got into an accident with another vehicle and received surgery on one of his legs. The details of his accident are unclear and are still under investigation by the Sherriffs Department. His name is not being released. Although he will not be back on campus, Pat Wakefield, a teacher at DBHS, has volunteered to home-school the student until the end of the school year in order to help him finish his classes. Everybody here was fabulous as far as their support for him and has been sending messages to him to make sure he was okay, said Ginger Auten, a class of 2012 Grade Level Coordinator. She added, I think given the initial shock and apparent severity of the accident, I think he is really lucky. Diamond Bar High Schools office personnel contacted the Sheriffs Department after the accident. The Sheriffs Department then contacted the paramedics and brought in a helicopter to transport the student to the University of California, Irvine Medical Center. He stayed at the UCI Medical Center for approximately a week. An ambulance drove the student from the accident site to the football field, where the helicopter landed. I was really pleased about how quickly paramedics and Sheriffs responded. The fact that they made determinations to use a helicopter to fly to the nearest trauma center demonstrates they really know the job and they really have the best interest of our students at heart as well, commented Assistant Principal Tim Bryan. The helicopter landed on the football field before the ambulance arrived. We contacted the athletic events that were going on, on the upper field when the helicopter was going to be landing, so the coaches already knew, explained Bryan. Bryan discussed the importance of safety around campus. There are a lot of schools surrounding us. There is a lot of traffic around the school. We have so many people and machines moving at the same time in the morning and in the afternoon. He added, It is really important that we are paying attention to what is going on because you just have to be [Please see SAFETY on page 3]

Six DBHS Students Participated in the 28th Annual Art Show

DRAW: Selected DBHS art students entered class projects in an art show. These included Indian tribal self-portraits done in pencil, pastel landscapes, and still lifes. Laura Moffitt Staff Writer Diamond Bar High School students participated in the Pomona Valley Art Associations 28th Annual Open-Juried Art Show from Saturday, May 9 to Sunday, May 24. Diamond Bar High Schools studio art seniors, Emily Bertrand, Shirley Kim, Amy Nguyen, and Tiffany Su; junior Emily Hung; and sophomore Breanna Laverde were entered into the competition in the OpenJuried Division. However, the students did not receive any ribbons. The Open-Juried Division allowed all artists of any level to apply. Rather than the Student Division, where only high school students can participate, being in the Open-Juried Division meant that they would be competing against artists of all levels. After submitting their work, the artists went to the show and looked at other pieces and those who received ribbons. Hung, Nguyen, and Su submitted a tribal self-portrait done in pencil while Kim and Laverde submitted pastel landscapes. Bertrand was the only one who submitted a black-and-white still life done in pencil. The recognition was really great, commented Nguyen. She added, Having Mr. Hamel enter my piece in the show was like validation [of] my efforts. I have more motivation to create and play around with different mediums now. Bertrand said, [I enjoyed] being in the same division as adults and real artists. Its cool that my piece was put up against other people who have had more years of experience. The students were competingagainst professionals of all levels and were the only students asked to participate in this division. Just looking at their work, its very, very good, commented art teacher Dave Hamel. He explained, There werent many entries for the student show, so I took the work out and asked them where they thought I should enter these. Because it was high quality work, one of the judges felt that they were very qualified to enter the open. They worked in class on their pieces for about three to five weeks, with a variety of media ranging from pastels to pencils. The art works included a variety of Indian tribal selfportraits, pastel landscapes, and still lifes. Originally, the pieces were given as projects for the first semester, but after seeing the pieces, Hamel, along with the students, decided to enter them

Dance Concert Held in the DBHS Theater

SWING: Tickets for the dance concert were sold in the dance room for $8 and were also sold at the door. All proceeds then paid for costumes, props, and blank CDs. Diana Romero Asst. Photo Editor Diamond Bar High Schools 20th Annual Spring Dance Concert was held in the theater on Thursday, May 14 and Friday, May 15 from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. This performance showcased all of the dance classes and programs at DBHS such as the intermediate and advanced ensembles, the dance team, and the male dance crew. The dance concert was titled This Joint Is Jumpin and began with a production piece with a song of the same title. Approximately 60 students participated in the opening. The performance included a variety of dances that included Hip Hop, Tahitian, lyrical, jazz, and tap. [Students] show their dances as they progress throughout the semester with the aim to audition to be in the concert, explained DBHS dance teacher Janna Lindenberg. Not all the dances can be in the show. Students need to demonstrate preparedness, strong execution, and audience appeal, she added.

Another male student from DBHS was robbed by five individuals who were driving a maroon-colored Honda type vehicle. This incident occurred on Tuesday, May 12, at approximately 1 p.m. Several individuals stepped out of the vehicle and confronted the male student. When they asked him what items he had in his pockets, he revealed an iPod, his wallet, and his insulin pump. Instead of taking his iPod or wallet, they took his insulin pump. Before they got back into the car, one of them punched the student in the face. They drove off immediately after this. This case is also still under investigation by the Sheriffs Department. Two deputies came to Diamond Bar [High School] to see if we had noticed anything unusual within minutes of the report of the robbery, stated Bryan. Regarding students safety, Bryan said, On campus, were not changing what we do because we have a pretty good hold on keeping the kids safe on campus with all of our policies and procedures. Candidates for last weeks class officer elections received a notice last Monday telling them that all campaign giveaways would no longer be allowed. The decision was made by administration and enforced by the United Student Body. Such a decision was a shock to campaigners, who for years have been accustomed to giving out extravagant paraphernalia to bribe voters. Such a decision to ban the bribes was given without sufficient notice, but was a good move, since it has partially restored the ideals of equality and democracy for which the elections stand. Campaign giveaways have been an integral part of the election process at Diamond Bar High School for too long. Instead of voting for the best candidates, students vote for whoever has given out the most elaborate gifts. With the elimination of such items, students have been encouraged to vote for the most capable candidate instead of the richest. In the past, USB had guidelines on the distribution of giveaways. But it became obvious that few were following the guidelines, as the elaborateness and quantity of gifts dispensed forced many to question whether the $200 spending limit was being followed. Even the ban on food items was disregarded by some candidates on the first day of campaigning. Giveaways have been greatly abused by recipients. Students litter the giveaways around campus. Administration and USB should also consider further limiting the usage of flyers, though there is an existing limit. The giveaways also hurt the learning environment, as teachers complain of distraction caused by the disruptive toys. Yet the decision to prohibit giveaways was poorly communicated. Candidates who invested time and money into making and purchasing items for distribution were stunned by the impulsive decision, as they were left with many bags of merchandise. Candidates were tempted to continue with the distribution illegally. If the decision was given proper notice, candidates would not be faced with the dilemma they were put in last week. Hopefully, this ban will continue into the future. Our school elections have long been known for their inequity, primarily because of the use of giveaways; the prohibition has brought back some of the justness of which our elections have been devoid.

Out of Gas and Luck

Adeel Mohammadi Editor-in-Chief More than four decades ago, the American oil company Texaco went to Ecuador to pump petroleum from the countrys huge oil fields; a byproduct of the pumping, toxic waste, was dumped at numerous sites throughout the country. After doing so, Texaco left Ecuador in the 1990s, and is now a part of Chevron. The effects of the irresponsible dumping have been felt by Ecuadorians for decadesthe American oil companies need to be held accountable for their actions and penalized for what they have done. Currently, 20,000 Ecuadorians are collectively suing Chevron for a sum of $27 billion, the estimated cost of repairing the environmental damage incurred because of the illegal dumping. Justice demands that Chevron pay for the liability that they acquired, but Chevron executives are refusing to acknowledge their responsibility. Ecuadorians have had to deal with the repercussions of the companys negligence for decades. Ground water, a source of drinking water for many, has been contaminated. Because rivers have been polluted with oil and other toxic substances, trades like fishing have suffered greatly. In a country that is already suffering from poverty and underdevelopment, the American oil corporations, first Texaco and now Chevron, are devastating Ecuador; while corporate executives and lawyers stubbornly fight the case, Ecuadors landscape and people are forced to deal with the consequences of the environmental negligence. Because Chevron is dealing with a country with little power, the company is under the impression that it can get away with not paying to clean up the toxic mess. Indubitably, such dumping would not have been tolerated on American soil; neither should it be accepted in Ecuador. Chevron argues that it is only partly responsible for the

damage, since Texaco was partnered with an Ecuadorian oil firm; yet, Texaco operated all of the drilling, and under American law, that would make them fully responsible. Furthermore, Chevron argues that since Texaco spent $40 million in the 1990s for clean-up, the firm is absolved of the responsibility. But of the more than 900 toxic sites in Ecuador, only about 160 have been cleaned by Texaco, though the effectiveness of the cleaning is disputed, while the rest continue to fester and pollute the country. The American oil companies consider themselves to be above the law. In the 1990s, when several Ecuadorians sued Texaco in an American court, the oil companys lawyers argued that the case should be tried in Ecuador. Now that it is, Chevron is arguing that in Ecuador, they will not receive a fair trial. It seems that instead of wanting a fair trial, the oil companies are looking for excuses to escape their liability. Instead of paying to fix the toxic sites, Chevron has embarked on a giant public relations campaign, after learning that CBS 60 Minutes was seeking to do an expos. Chevron is trying to convince the world that it is not responsible, making biased videos captioned Learn more about the lawsuit in Ecuador and why it should be dismissed. Chevron has bought advertisement space on Google, so that when searchers enter Chevron in Ecuador, they find links to Chevrons partial pages. Instead of caring about their environmental impact, Chevron is more concerned with its global image, one that will doubtlessly be tarnished by this episode. While Chevron claims itself to be an international company investing in human energy, the American and international population are forced to wonder why Chevron has not taken responsibility for its actions and righted a grave injustice to the people of Ecuador. Chevron is letting thousands of Ecuadorians suffer while its lawyers try to find loopholes and evade liability for a crime, the effects of which have been felt for 40 years.

GOP, Ive Gone Out Partying

Elizabeth Lee Asst. News Editor After nearly 30 years in the Senate as a Republican, Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania switched to the Democratic Party, and was stripped of his seniority late last month. Though he claims that his political opinions are more Democratic than they are Republican, his decision was clearly based on his desire to gain more popularity and remain in the Senate, since being a Democrat will be beneficial during the reelection. If he continues to aim for gaining public approval instead of truly following his personal beliefs, he will, instead of voting by his own judgment, vote to gain popularity. This is not the first time Specter has shifted political parties. He once ran as a Democrat for the office of Attorney General for the state of Pennsylvania before he became a Republican. After winning his desired position, he reaffirmed himself as a Republican to get into the Senate. However, when he saw his slim chances of being reelected as a Republican, Specter chose to, once again, become a Democrat. Specters method of securing a reelection reveals that he has become extremely desperate to remain in the Senate. It has now become clear that he will do anything, including using the media coverage of his party switch as a way to appeal to the public, to secure his position. He has already abandoned both parties once and can easily do so again when the opportunity arises. Specter needs to be more stable because being so

fickle makes him seem like an easily influenced politician. Anyone who is aware of Specters political background and opportunistic motives would not trust him to remain loyal to the Democratic Party. The only reason he changed parties was to appeal more to voters and to get reelected. Yet if Specter has been so adamant about his party label, one might think that his decisions would be more Democratic in nature. Even though Specter is now a Democrat, he has not been showing his party much support. For his first vote as a Democrat, he went against Obamas budget resolution and voted with all the Republican senators to defeat the bill, which would have expanded health care. He is already planning on opposing the Democratic votes on energy and education.

Furthermore, he will vote against a legislation that will allow workers to form unions more easily. His beliefs are obviously more conservative than liberalhe is merely a Republican with a Democratic name. Many argue that he is simply showing independence from his party. Specter could easily have demonstrated this independence while remaining in the Republican Party. There was no need for Specter to switch parties, besides the obvious benefit of reelection. It has become glaringly apparent to voters that Specter is an attention-seeking politician who has turned to the media as a last resort to remain in the Senate. His desperate attempt to remain in the world of politics has been overdone. The second party switch he has committed will soon prove to be in vain.

The Three Little Pig-Stops

Sharon Lin Editorial Editor The swine flu has caused quite a scare this past month. Recently, a boy living in Mexico by the name of Peppy Oni gave us even more of a reason to fret. Onis mother thought that he had caught the normal seasonal flu. He was experiencing coughing, lack of appetite, and a sore throat. After a couple days, however, Oni was diagnosed with the swine flu. He was horrified to find that a pig tail had grown on his tailbone. If we do not close off our borders with Mexico, this mutation can very well spread to the United States and other countries. Here are three reasons why we need to close Mexican borders: 1.) We need to ensure that the human species stays a species. As seen in the case of Oni, the swine flu has the ability to mutate its hosts. In order to preserve the human race, specifically the Americans, closing the borders will be necessary. It is impossible for us to save Oni and those who have already been infected, but confining the infected in Mexico, which is where the disease originated from, is the most logical way of stopping the infection. Though some may argue that this is a drastic

Blazing Trails of Satire

Upon learning about the swine flu, Egypt slaughtered a huge group of pigs and Ghana has forbidden the import of pork to prevent contracting and spreading the flu. What a tragedy it is to have all this delicious meat go to waste! Pork is a good source of protein necessary for good growth and energy. Though pigs have been seen as the enemy this past month, they are merely victims of Mexicos lack of cleanliness. Pigs are just about the cleanest creatures on Earth. They do not even sweat! It is about time to stop putting the blame on these poor animals. If we must blame, we must blame Mexicans, for they are the true creators of the swine flu. 3.) Maintaining the rights of Mexican citizens jeopardizes our lifestyles. Citizens outside of Mexico have been struggling and using all of their energy to avoid catching the highly contagious swine flu. Even our dear vice president, Joe Biden, has been advising family members to avoid public transportation and crowded areas by any means. It is unfair that citizens not involved with Mexico are being subjected to social deprivation. Mexico has not only failed its own citizens, but also those of other countries, who have to suffer because of another countrys inability to maintain sanitation. A full border closure is the only way to quickly and successfully end the chaos and hysteria that the epidemic has caused. These are the three primary steps that we must take in order to preserve the rights of innocent citizens around the world. We must not waver in our stance, but fight Mexico headstrong. We must remember our purpose as the most powerful nation in the world and use our authority to manage the peace and happiness of life. Til Death
Eric Lee Asst. News Editor Over 2,225 juveniles in the United States have been sentenced to life imprisonment without parole. The ruthless punishment given to these young criminals have led some people to question whether such sentences violate the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution, which prohibits the imposition of cruel and unusual punishment. While the juveniles have been indicted due to their misconduct, they are not entirely at fault. Instead, the blame lies with the justice system and its pervasive treatment of juveniles in the court systems. Instead of putting juveniles in jail for life, courts should focus on reforming the juveniles and giving them a second chance. When Antonio de Jesus Nuez was 14 years old, he kidnapped a man and held him for ransom. Although no one was injured, Nuez was sentenced to life in prison. Prosecuting him made sense, but a life sentence with no chance of parole seems too extreme. Nuez was penalized unfairlynobody was seriously injured in the whole affair, but he received the same punishment as an adult who would have committed murder. Nuez is one of many cases, since the majority of harshly sentenced juveniles have caused no injury. Young criminals who are vulnerable to intimidation imposed by the ofcials of the justice system are far more susceptible to being victims of psychological interrogation techniques. Ofcials are surely aware of this vulnerability, yet they proceed with the standard methods utilized on mature criminals to manipulate a juveniles mind in such a way that he or she pleads guilty. These techniques are designed for adults, but when used upon children, frightened juveniles simply give false confessions. Together with their diminished understanding of rights, confusion about trial processes, limited language skills, and inadequate decision-making abilities, young children are at great risk in the adult criminal justice system. Furthermore, many juveniles come from low-income familes and are given court-appointed lawyers. These lawyers are especially

unfamiliar with juveniles and often fail to represent their young clients accurately. Because the court system is unprepared for juveniles, they should not be treated so harshly. Every year, courts charge numerous juveniles with life imprisonment without parole.

Juveniles are obviously tried by courts that are lacking sympathy and clemency, making their decisions without considering a suspects age. Yet age has much to do with the decisionmaking abilities of an individual. Young teens who experience widely fluctuating emotions, vulnerability to stress, and peer pressure will eventually end up in a court where they will receive little or no justice and be sent to jail for the rest of their lives. Both the justice system and the government should look for a resolution to help juveniles who have not yet learned the ability to resist impulses or control their emotions by adopting a system that not only maintains the integrity of the justice system, but also gives the young criminals a second chance at life.

What a wonderful and entertaining evening. Director Mr. Bland and his crew did a great job preparing the cast of characters. The cast really got into their roles and provided lots of laughs. We were grinning the whole evening. They all performed with such enthusiasm and energy. The props were done nicely and the orchestras music complimented the show. Pro: SAT Tutoring

Katie Lee Asst. Editorial Editor Since incredible amounts of money and time have been invested into a child by the time he or she is in high school, one must not deprive their child of a tutor at the most critical stage. It is crucial for students to begin preparing for the Scholastic Aptitude Test, the standardized college entrance examination, because that exam will determine a students future. SAT tutoring programs can be useful for providing effective knowledge, essential test-taking strategies, and a boost of condence. The expenses may seem high, but even low-income families will nd it is a worthwhile investment. Students who choose to attend tutoring programs will achieve a higher score on the SATs than students who are not enrolled because SAT tutors know exactly which categories are on the test. Instructors also teach strategies that go beyond the general education received in school. Tutors have the ability to provide students with additional knowledge and reinforce information obtained in the past. An adequate guide can take the overwhelming amount of data amassed over the years and render it useful for the actual test. SAT tests are created in a multiple-choice format; this opens up a door of strategies that can direct students to a higher score. The best way to learn these strategies is through a tutoring program. Focused sessions at tutoring centers will help students to learn how to approach SAT testing in an efcient way. In addition, teaching test-taking strategies such as the process of elimination and the use of graphic organizers will help students approach the array of multiple-choice questions and the challenging essay. Students lacking these extensive teachings may not be accepted into a respectable college due to a low SAT score. Succeeding in the SATs is the primary ticket to prosperity in the future. Hence, it is merely common sense to invest time, money, and effort into SAT tutors. These SAT mentors help students with content, strategy, and a path to condence. By being aware of the actual SAT format, content, and process, students know what to expect and how to face each problem, unlike students who are unfamiliar with the test and will therefore score lower. Scores will increase if stress is replaced with condence. This component of condence alone will notably enhance a students score by many hundreds of points. Though SAT costs might appear to be high, students and their families must understand that the classes will be an investment in the future. Additionally, educated citizens are more productive and every dollar invested in their education is returned many times over. Therefore, the government and private donors should be encouraged to subsidize the costs. Supporting these financially challenged students efforts to usher them into good colleges will ensure that they will be productive citizens and contribute to the economic output of the country rather than live a life spent as a recipient of government handouts. Hence, such nancial aid for SAT classes will be wellspent. SAT scores have high stakes for college admissions. College, in turn, has critical implications for ones future income. This makes the four-hour-long SAT test equivalent to the hard work invested into four years of high school. SAT tutoring services are there at each persons own discretion. In an efcient amount of time, SAT boot camps will provide the knowledge, strategy, practice, and condence needed for this critical stage in ones life.

Con: SAT Tutoring

Marcel Boubion Staff Writer Summer is starting in a little more than a week; for many, this means attending classes where they will pay thousands of dollars in order to prepare for the Scholastic Aptitude Test. Colleges look at SAT scores to determine the reasoning and problem-solving skills of applicants, assuming that all students have a level playing eldbut the steep prices of SAT tutoring services leave students who are not nancially capable of taking these classes at a distinct disadvantage. Though colleges should continue to look at test scores to determine a students capacity, SAT classes make it so students who can afford the programs have an unfair advantage over students who cannot. Colleges expect students to have dedication and selfmotivation, things that SAT tutoring services will not help with. A student enrolled in an SAT tutoring program will be pushed into the right direction and given guides pertaining to which material to study. Those without a tutoring program learn to develop their own study techniques and work ethic, which they will need in college. Students need to have more self-discipline in college than they need in high school, and a good score on the SAT earned without a prep class will further demonstrate that ability. Essentially, students are paying thousands of dollars to be spoon-fed information in a sheltered enviornment. Instead of spending summers pursuing other activites, students are being trained to score well. Summer is a time for extracurricular development, and SAT classes take away from this experience. For a test like the SAT, students should study on their own so everyone is given the same chance to score well. If some students are able to attend a tutoring program, then all students should be able to attend a tutoring program. However, since money is involved, there are unequal opportunities for students. The current economic condition has put a financial strain on millions of families across the nation, adding to the number of people who cannot afford these classes. Since SAT prep classes cost money, they need to be factored into the SAT score or taken note of by colleges before the tutoring programs are further allowed to alter the chances of college applicants. According to Elite Educational Institute, a popular choice among Diamond Bar High School students, those who do not participate in their program recieve an average score 240 points lower than those who do. Being unable to attend these SAT classes, which is often the result of economic disadvantages, has an unfair effect on SAT scores. Colleges should request information regarding any SAT preparatory classes taken as part of the application process. This added step should not make a good SAT score meaningless because a student received help, but should be taken into account when it is compared to a similar score belonging to someone who did not attend any SAT classes. Money clearly plays too big of a role in what kind of scores a student will get on the SAT. Money takes away the chance of getting a relatively good score from kids who cannot afford SAT prep classes. SAT scores are meant to show colleges how one will perform in a collegelevel classroom. Since tutoring classes change the playing eld, some students receive better chances. With tutoring programs that help improve test scores, the opportunities are handed out to those with money rst. Until every college takes note of each students enrollment in any SAT tutoring program, these tutoring programs should not be allowed.

Life is but a Pride Prom Dream

Sharon Lin Editorial Editor Anahita Namaki Former Editor-in-Chief Growing up, also known as high school, effectively manages to suck the life out of you. I entered high school as a freshman who actually smiled and slid down rails and did cart wheels without saying, Hold on, I need a second; but within two years time, I had turned into an individual that would choose not to use the restroom if it meant standing in line and waiting for just a few minutes. I attribute my dehumanization to simple things that are both craved and shunnedresponsibility and security. However, with only two more days left of school and the prospect of a whole new setting in full view, I can feel my soul gradually coming back, like a balloon slowly being inated, ready to burst onto the scene. I am now able to realize that although high school and all of the growing pains that came with it might have temporarily dulled my star, in the long run, it has in fact taught me how to not let my star be dulled regardless of the experience. But of course, these past four years were lled with so many good times, maybe even too many. I do not know how many times I complained to my parents about being bored because everything eventually seems so routine. They told me I felt bored because I have not suffered enoughdenitely words of wisdom. You need the bad to fully appreciate the good. Enjoy the moment because you can be assured the bad times will come. Fortunately, comfort can be found in the little things, so make sure you jump on every opportunity no matter how trivial it may seem. Bring money when there is an All Club Food Fair and spend it on one of the few opportunities that you have to eat food high in saturated fat at school. Go to a Justo Lamas concert; even if you are not in the Spanish program, and yell, Bsame Justo! Stay at Dennys from 3:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. before friday night varsity football games and then proceed to eat delicious kettle corn at the game. Try painting posters and hanging them around campus and appreciate how difcult it is. Participate in a blood drive and possibly save three lives. Buy Robeksthe large size because it is a better deal. Do not say, Thats what she said. Go to the rallies and just enjoy it dude. Read the school newspaper and learn something. All of these are opportunities that you likely would not nd at another high school, let alone get to experience again in life. Just do it. All the moments would be so much less enjoyable without friends, so have them tag along. They can teach you to scrock and roll, drink Jamba Juice, and get wasted on pesto and cheese. The greatest bit of advice I can give is to never stop exercising your mind, body, and soul because once you stop it is very hard to start. Try not to let your brain go to mush this summer. Gina Hong Former Editor-in-Chief Sometimes the expectations that complicate prom night can build up anxiety. For LGBT students, the anticipation can be worse, especially if they want to take same-sex partners to their high school prom. In more socially conservative areas, such students might worry about how their peers would react. On May 9, University of California, Riverside provided an alternative prom for LGBT and Allies: Pride Prom. Held at The Barn on the UCR campus, Pride Prom was organized by the universitys Queer Alliance for both high school and UCR students. Even some teachers attended the event. Entrance was free, food and drinks were provided, and the event website simply stated, Come as you are, or dress to impress. Students came to dance and have fun without the stress of a traditional prom night or worrying about being public with a same-sex partner. It was apparent that stress was the last thing on anyones mind. Some people arrived dressed in jeans and t-shirts while others took dress to impress to a whole new level. There were several impressive outts, including sequined blazers, shoes that could cause some serious physical damage, enviable vintage rock tees, and ballroom worthy gowns. The music was as varied as the apparel: the DJ played songs by artists ranging from The Veronicas to The Black Eyes Peas, and, of course, Katy Perrys I Kissed a Girl. The dance oor was constantly packedno one seemed timid. Boys danced with boys, girls danced with girls, and the straight allies in attendance danced with everyone. The variety of people, outts, and couples made the evening so comfortable that I couldnt resist the dance oor with its strobe lights and smoke machines. There was no opportunity to be a wallower. At one point during the night, three boys requested an encore of Beyonces All the Single Ladies and performed a choreographed routine in front of the DJ. The entire room turned to watch their silhouettes as they danced in front of the oor lights, winking at the audience. I couldnt imagine something like that happening at the Diamond Bar High School prom. Three gay guys rocking out to Beyonce in front of everyone? I doubt it. I watched those boys dance while people around the room cheered them on. The spectators consisted of all kinds of people who came with whomever they wanted to without having to worry about the reactions of others. Everyone seemed to be having a wonderful time in a relaxed, yet energetic atmosphere: no overpriced limos or awkward slow dances, and no high school drama. More than anything, the company was comfortable and friendly. It didnt matter if I didnt have a date or if I was straight or gay since everyone was there to dance and have fun nothing more. The only negative aspect of the night was the fact that the event ended too early; the night was young when Pride Prom was over, and the only thing on everyones mind was where the after party would be. Feature Whered the Water Go?

Ruby Hwang Staff Writer Nicole Ongpoy Staff Writer Taking a shower, brushing your teeth, washing your face; what do all these things have in common? You need water; everyone needs water and lots of it. Have you ever thought about how many gallons of water go into doing everyday activities? Ten gallons, twenty gallons, thirty, forty, fty, maybe even more? With all the water shortages and recent steps toward the Los Angeles County water rationing, we put two writers up to the task of using a limited amount of water. From Monday, 5/11 through Thursday 5/14, Nicole Ongpoy took on the challenge of showering every other day for only ve minutes, while Ruby Hwang could only ush the toilet after every three uses and could use only ONE cup of water to brush her teeth and wash her face for the entire four days. Think this sounds easy? Well, think again.

Showering every other day for only five minutes

Monday: Five minutes. Thats all the time I had to take a shower; and I usually take hour-long showers. I didnt think it would be such a big deal. I mean, how long does it really take to wash and shampoo? I never realized how quickly time passes when I doze off in the shower. I had no time to sing in the shower today. Tuesday: Sniff, sniff. I just smelled myself, and I can safely say, its not that bad. Im worried if people will notice tomorrow, but Im just going to suck it up and shower myself with perfume in the morning instead. I still feel sticky at the moment because I was sweating from sports activities, but its not like Im about to die from my minimized stench. Wednesday: Those who know that Im doing this water project, held up their noses and teased me. But for the people who are unaware, they treated me normally. Ive done some research and it said that its not good to shower and wash your hair everyday because it destroys the natural oils in your hair. Even so, I thank God I get to clean off all of that yucky dirt on my skin, even if its for only 5 minutes. Thursday: Nobody noticed my stink, and the world didnt blow up into ashes. Really, this water conservation thing doesnt stink at all. But I have to admit, I did hate the ve-minute shower asco. Five minutes can only last so long. Whether its taking very long showers or ushing six times a day in the comfort of your own home, our whole world is literally sucking the life out of our waters. Everybody and everything has to suffer from our wrongdoings because we decide to waste water by taking extra long showers, wasting God-knows how many gallons of water.

Flushing after three uses, brushing a whole week with only the amount of water in a single cup
Monday: Things are going great! Im so excited to help the environment. I lled my cup as high as I could to last me the entire four days of brushing my teeth. I stopped myself halfway into ushing the toilet, I can only ush after three uses. I know I can do this. Besides, I get to shower as often as I want. It cant be that bad. Tuesday: Ive been banished to the guest bathroom. I ended up using more than half the cup just by brushing my teeth twice. I couldnt bear to use the rest of the water in my cup so I washed my face in the shower. So now, I have already emptied the one cup of water that I was supposed to use to wash and brush for ve days. Two more days of this? Wednesday: Still hanging on. Okay, I might have cheated a little, or a lot. Well, its understandable. How can I possibly go for a week without washing my face? Without soap, my face feels like theres a thick layer of grime on it. Im only human. Besides, the bathroom smells terrible. Thursday: Ive pretty much given up now. Im considering showering twice a day just for the water. Im so relieved that when I wake up tomorrow, I will nally get to wash my face and gargle. Maybe I should feel proud to be doing a good thing for the Earth, but Im glad that this torture is nally over. While it may have been difcult, this was a very interesting experience. I have never thought of water as so important. I probably ended up using more water in the shower to brush and clean my face than I would have if I was allowed to use a sink. I believe that with good planning and a strong will, conserving water can really be worth it.

to the person who thought of it? From the birth of their industry, comedians of all backgrounds paid others for their jokes. More often than not, the comedians had writers, or an entire staff of writers to write their material for them. Late-night talk show hosts like Jay Leno and David Letterman. These men pay people all across the country, to write jokes and essentially make up their new routines each and everyday. So is it really wrong for the common man to tell a joke that has been bought by one of these comedians?

Fraud-o-Tune
a sound system that corrects offkey notes in musical recordings. It identies the nearest pitch of the recorded note and alters it to match the correct pitch so that the song sounds smooth. This correction may sound like what most people would call a techno voice or even a robotlike voice. Artists from every genre have used the software. Country stars Faith Hill and Tim McGraw have admitted to using the program in live performances to ensure that they hit the right notes. R&B singer T-Pain utilized Auto-tune to purposely alter the sound of his voice and give it a computerized twist. Chris Brown has also recently tried out Auto-tunes various effects. Rapper Kanye West experimented with the software; in his recent album, 808s and Heartbreak, he altered his voice to add certain effects to his songs. Although the software may seem like the solution to all music problems, ranging from off-key notes to screechy voices, it is actually an unwanted bridge between the talented and the untalented. Many consumers feel that the artists using Autotune are not true artists but instead are people who simply attempt to imitate those with real talent. Consumers feel especially disappointed at initially appealing artists who have turned to Auto-tune to try to become better. This can relate to a top-class professional athlete who uses steroids to become better. Kevin Kang Asst. A&E Editor It was only a few years ago when people raved over PacMan and other classic games. Most recently, Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo launched their new game systems which revolutionized the gaming industry;

Recently, many people have been asking, What happened to that singers voice? After listening to some of the songs nowadays, people have been wondering why the singers voice sounds computerized. All the credit for these effects can be given to Auto-tune, an audio-processing software that has gained popularity among professional musicians. Auto-tune was originally created by Andy Hildebrand of Antares Audio Technologies. It is

Summer brings extreme heat to sunny California, so what better way to beat the heat than by showing some leg? This summer, skirts and dresses will play a big role in the fashion industry. Look for materials such as silk and modal that will give your pieces a lightweight feel. When shopping for new items, look for soft details such as lace and crochet. Although white is very popular in the summer, be aware that lighter colors and fabrics tend to be too sheer. Skirts and dresses can also double as swimsuit cover-ups. The best swimsuits this season come in one shouldered, cutout, and bandaged styles. These a r e t h e traditional one piece swimsuits with a twist. The intricate cutout designs will transform you into a walking piece of art. When it comes to swimsuits, it is extremely important to be aware of your body. Unfortunately, bandaged styles are not attering on all body types, as they can draw attention to any extra baggage, but a one shouldered swimsuit can work for everyone. For guys, summer is all about mixing neutrals with splashes of color. White shorts with a pop of color can bring life to an otherwise boring outfit. C h o o s e sneakers, button up shirts, and polos in unexpected colors to brighten up your outfits, but be aware that bright bottoms are hard to pull off and should only be attempted by the most daring. Bright colors are also popular in mens swimwear this summer. Look for bright neons or bold patterns that will show off your condence and playfulness. C h o o s e geometric designs or patterns featuring c a r t o o n characters or comic book heroes. Dont b e s h y, l e t your childish side show! Athlete of the Year:
Joel Baez
Andrew John Asst. Sports Editor It is not easy to nd a person who shows dedication and passion in absolutely everything he does. However, these traits can be found in senior Joel Baez, making him simply one of a kind. Baez has earned honors at the varsity level for football, basketball, and track, all the while continuously helping others in his community. Baez has been an athlete his entire life. He rst began playing basketball when he was eight years old, when his sister and mom introduced him to the game. He only began playing football when he entered high school. Baez simply wanted to keep himself busy, but he ended up loving the sport. Even though he is now wellfor CIF. At the CIF Preliminaries, Baez was not feeling his best, causing him to throw the discus unexpectedly low compared to his standards. Fortunately, Baez still qualied in shotput. He and other track athletes competed at the CIF Masters meet at Cerritos College on Saturday, May 23. Baez does not just bring leadership and heart to the sports he plays; he also shows his character through volunteering in his community. He is a member of the Land of the Lions, an on-campus club that revolves around the Mexican culture, and the schools Sports Christian Club. Baez even helps out in organizations that he is not a member of. He helped out at the Diamond Bar Birthday Celebration despite the fact that he is not an ofcial volunteer for the City o f

known for his throwing ability in track, Baez has participated in track the least out of the sports he has played. In his sophomore year, he was asked to try out for the track team, and he turned out to have a natural gift in the sport. Coach Desai asked me to come out, and I ended up being the best thrower in the school, said Baez. Throughout his successful athletic career, Baez has received much praise for his superior athletic ability. This year, he was selected for the 1st team All-League Linebacker and Tight-end. He was named the Most Valuable Player in basketball for Diamond Bar, and his shooting average ranks within the top ve percentile of the league. Baez has had his most recent success in track and eld, as he broke and reset the schools discus throw record three times this year. He currently holds the record at 175 feet and three inches. Although he is still unsure about which college he will attend, Baez hopes to continue participating in sports throughout his time in college and also plans to pursue a career in sports-medicine and athletic training.
