RATIONALE:
Apart from supervising construction and maintenance of Civil Engineering works, a Diploma technician has to do survey, Collect data, refer to handbooks and design some components on the basis of his knowledge of different subjects like Applied Mechanics, Concrete Technology, Soil mechanics, Hydraulics, Construction, Irrigation, Environmental Engineering, etc. An engineer is involved for most of the time in activities of synthesis or integration rather than those of analysis. Civil Engineering Projects is included in the curriculum mainly with a view to provide students with an opportunity to develop synthesizing skills and to enable them to integrate knowledge of (apparently disconnected) subjects in producing a total meaningful scheme. A student is given an existing engineering problems and he has to provide a possible solution for which he is supposed to collect suitable data through survey and/or containing various resources through handbook and data book and design suitable components, prepare drawings and write a detailed report of activities he undertakes to find the solution. Through independent as well as group activities, students are made to interact with each other and persons in the field to take and justify their decision with reference to a real life situation and thus to prepare them to enter into the field activity.

OBJECTIVES:
Students will be able to 1) Collect data from various sources. 2) Develop skill of using Indian Standards, Data Books, and Handbook. 3) Work independently. 4) Work as a member of a team. 5) Prepare and present the report of his activities. 6) Use and integrate knowledge of different subjects to produce working drawings of scheme. 7) Use his surveying skills to prepare contour maps needed for projects. 8) Make simple design with the help of handbook, data books etc. 9) Develop a spirit of enquiry. 10) Develop professional abilities such as persuasion ,confidence ,perseverance and communication skills 11) Develop presentation skills

COURSE CONTENTS:
The students should know the procedure of collecting data from the field by SURVEYING for 5 days / 3 Visits. The students have to prepare a report of his project with chapters Introduction, Data collected, Data recommended and Conclusion. They should visit and find the reasons, cases, solutions, specific recommendation for a problems identified.

TERM WORK: The term work shall consist of a detailed project report on the following topics /or any current topic in Civil Engineering. Case studies of Civil Engg. Projects Roads, tunnels bridges, buildings) in progress, under completion in and around Mumbai. 2 Use of Software relevant to the Civil Engg. a) Planning, designing and estimation of Civil Engg. b) Planning of W.S. and Sanitary schemes. 3 Study and use of latest instruments, equipment useful for Civil Engg. works. 4 Use of CAD in planning of units, interior decoration of building etc. 5 Minor irrigation projects / Minor water supply project / Minor water treatment units / Water supply & sanitary for a school building / Low cost housing / Use of Precast units in building or similar. 6.
