Solving the problem by using Microsoft Office Excel

Problem: The company Just Shirts has been formed to make high quality shirts and is planning to make two types, the Regular Fit and the Deluxe Fit. The company expects to make a profit of 7 on each Regular Shirt and 9 on each Deluxe Fit. Each shirt requires cotton, of which 600 square metres is available each day and machinists to cut and stitch the shirts. Twenty machinists are employed by the company and they each work an 8-hour day. Each Regular Fit shirt requires 5 square metres of cotton and takes 1 hour to make, while each Deluxe Fit shirt requires 6 metres of cotton and takes two hours to make. The company wishes to maximize its total daily profit.

Step 1 (Understanding of the information given) To understand the information, the suitable method that we can use is by putting all the information given in the problem into a table, in order to make it organized. Regular Fit x 5 1 7 Deluxe Fit y 6 2 9 Available 600 160* P

Number of shirts Cotton (m2) Time (hour) Profit ()

*From the question, they are 20 machinists are employed, and each of them work 8 hours daily. So, the available hours daily for making the both types of shirts are: 8 hours x 20 machinists = 160 hours

Step 2 (Identify all the constraints and the objective function)

Constraint 1 1 Regular Fit shirt needs 5m2 of cotton. So, x Regular Fit shirt need 5xm2 of cotton.

1 Deluxe Fit shirt needs 6m2 of cotton So, y Deluxe Fit shirt need 6y m2 of cotton.

Since there are only 600m2 of cotton available per day, hence, the constraint of needed cotton for the shirts is: 5x + 6y 600. (1)

Constraint 2 1 hour is needed to make 1 Regular Fit shirt. So, x hours are needed to make x Regular Fit shirt.

2 hours are needed to make 1 Deluxe Fit shirt. So, 2y hours are needed to make y Deluxe Fit shirt.

Since there are only 160 hours are available for making the shirts, hence, the constraint of the time needed to make the shirts is: x + 2y 160 (2)

Objective Function Let P denotes to the maximum total daily profit that the company wishes to make. 1 Regular Fit shirt makes a profit of 7. So, x Regular Fit shirt makes a profit of 7x.

1 Deluxe Fit shirt makes a profit of 9. Hence, y Deluxe Fit shirt makes a profit of 9y.

From the information above, we can formulate the objective function as: 7x + 9y = P.. (3)

Non-negativity From the information, we know that the problem is non-negativity. Therefore, we can get the equations of And ... (4) .... (5)

Step 3 (Plot the graph based on the constraints and objective function formulated)

Convert the constraint (1) into equation: 5x + 6y 600 to 5x + 6y = 600 When x = 0, y = 100; and when x = 120, y = 0. Thus, we can get the coordinates to plot the graph for the constraint (1), which are (0, 100) and (120, 0)

Convert the constraint (2) into equation: x + 2y 160 to x + 2y = 160 When x = 0, y = 80; and when x = 160, y = 0. Thus, we can get the coordinates to plot the graph for the constraint (2), which are (0, 180) and (160, 0)

Let P = 630, (we chose this value because 630 can be divided by both of the numbers, 7 and 9) So, we get the equation of objective function as: 7x + 9y = 630 When x = 0, y = 90, and when x = 70, y = 70 Thus, we can get the coordinates to plot the graph for the objective function, which are (0, 90) and (70, 0)

As for the properties of non-negativity, the equation of x = 0 lies on the y-axis. Maeanwhile, the equation of y = 0 lies on the x-axis. Then, plot the graph according to the coordinates that we get from the calculation above. (Please refer to graph 1) From the graph 1, the feasible region was shaded, and The optimal point is labeled as A.

Step 4 (Solution) From the graph, the optimal point that gives the maximum profit for the company is (60, 50). So, we know that x = 60 and y = 50 To find the maximum total daily profit, P, substitute the value of x and y into the objective function. P = 7x + 9y P = 7(60) + 9(50) P = 870 Hence, the maximum total daily profit that the company Just Shirt can get daily is 870.
