The Wastewater Treatment Division (WTD) seeks several full-time summer interns. Assignments will be to one of the following areas providing experience in the practical application of coursework in a large-scale urban infrastructure system. Construction Management Engineering-Drafting Engineering-Electrical Environmental Education/Communications Geographical Information Systems/GPS Project Control/Contract Administration Project Management-Infrastructure Transportation/Supply Chain Warehouse Management Web Design/Communications

WHO MAY APPLY: This position is open to students currently enrolled and continuing in the fall of 2013 in full time status at an accredited university/college or community college with coursework in the described areas. Proof of full time enrollment status required. Some positions require a valid drivers license. WORK SCHEDULE: In most cases, the work schedule will be Monday Friday, 8-hour days. Positions will report to various King County Wastewater Treatment Division locations. Additional requirements for individual internships are listed below. PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Some positions require field work with exposure to safety sensitive areas. Positions may require the ability to traverse in rapidly changing construction areas.

Descriptions of Internship Opportunities 1. Construction Management Student will learn and gain an understanding of both the construction and construction contracting process. Specifically, the position will be exposed to responding to Requests for Information, reviewing contract specifications and contractor submittals, and confirming the work in the field is occurring consistent with the drawings, specifications and contractor submittals. This work will be best performed and of most benefit to a student with an Engineering, Project Management, Construction Management/Engineering focus. Location: Brightwater Treatment Plant-22505 State Route 9 SE, Woodinville, WA 2. Engineering-Drafting Student will gain and enhance an understanding of engineering drawings, revision and document process. Student will assist to maintain, correct, and update the existing set of WPTP facility drawings for O&M staff, WTD engineers, WTD project managers, contractor/consultants, and government regulatory agencies and will organize information to facilitate the documentation process and increase the ease of accessibility. Requirements: Familiarity and experience with AutoCad, Ability to effectively use Microsoft Office products This work will be best performed and of most benefit to a student with an Engineering or Drafting focus. Location: West Point Treatment Plant -1400 Discovery Park Blvd, Seattle, WA 3. Engineering-Electrical Student will gain knowledge in applying electrical engineering principles in wastewater treatment plant and offsite facilities. Student will assist in investigating existing installations, gathering appropriate data, and applying it to WTDs arc flash study project. Requirements: Successful completion of a minimum of one year of course work after being admitted to the college or universitys electrical engineering department. This work will be best performed and of most benefit to a student with an Electrical Engineering focus. Location: King Street Center-201 South Jackson Street, Seattle, WA and offsite facilities as needed. 4. Environmental Education/Communications Student will gain experience in the fields of outreach and communications by assisting in facilitation of WTD education programs to a wide range of audiences within the community. The intern will conduct tours of the treatment plant to students and general community members, collaborate with the Site Manager for the development of specialty tours designed to engage students in careers in wastewater, act as a representative of WTD in outreach events (boothing tables, brief presentations, tours), and create education, outreach and communications materials to be used in the Center programs and exhibit hall (curriculum, power points, social media, brochures, etc.) Requirements: Candidates must have an interest and experience in teaching and public speaking Basic understanding of environmental issues Willingness to learn about water conservation, wetland ecology, and the wastewater treatment process. This work will be best performed and of most benefit to a student with an Education, Environmental, or Biological Sciences focus. Location: Brightwater Treatment Plant-22505 State Route 9 SE, Woodinville, WA 5. GIS/GPS Intern (2 positions) Increase GIS skills by gaining an understanding of data collection, data development, GPS experience, and an understanding of a wastewater system. Intern will be involved in field work and will include working to locate, verify & collect GPS data for manholes & conveyance facilities in the separated portion of the KCWTD system. Interns will assist in making daily collection plans, gathering the necessary background

information relating to the days work, collecting the GPS data in the field, post -processing the data, entering the data into GIS, and producing reports and cartographic products. Requirements: Understanding of fundamentals of GIS. GPS experience a plus This work will be best performed and of most benefit to an Engineering or Geography/GIS student. Location: King Street Center-201 South Jackson Street, Seattle, WA and field work. 6. Project Control/Contract Management Student will assist and gain deeper understanding of project control and construction contract administration activities that could include establishing, monitoring and reporting on variances of project baselines for scope, schedule and budget, comparing baselines to updated actual project data, other data analysis, reports, contract management and recommendations. Requirements: One year experience working with numbers is desirable. Familiarity with project management processes and knowledge areas as described by the Project Management Institutes Project Management Body of Knowledge. Awareness of project management and construction management techniques and principles, contract administration principles, and critical path method (CPM) project scheduling. A working knowledge of computer software and common business applications. The ability to communicate in writing and orally on technical information topics. Work experience in automated cost accounting systems and critical path method (CPM) scheduling is desirable. This work will be best performed and of most benefit to a student with a Project Control, Project Management, or Construction Management focus. Location: Brightwater Treatment Plant-22505 State Route 9 SE, Woodinville, WA 7. Project Management Student will gain a basic understanding of how large public infrastructure projects are designed and implemented. Student will assist project managers and members of the project team as we assemble a project team and begin to site, design, and engineer a Combined Sewer Overflow Wastewater Treatment Facility, conveyance improvements and river outfall. Work of the intern will include project research, support for team meetings, briefings and public meetings, attendance and participation in team and subject area meetings, scheduling, managing project files and overseeing the development and production of project graphics and public information materials. Requirements: Area of study must be in planning, engineering, architecture, landscape architecture, or public administration. General research skills Ability to effectively use Microsoft Office products and other software applications as needed This work will be best performed and of most benefit to a student with a planning, engineering, architecture, landscape architecture, or public administration focus. Location: King Street Center-201 South Jackson Street, Seattle, WA 8. Transportation/Supply Chain Intern will learn (1) the workings of a 7 day/week intrastate public-private trucking operation; (2) how federal regulations and computer tracking technology can improve safety and efficiency of transportation programs; (3) the importance of reliable and cost-effective transportation options for resource recovery programs. Intern will assist staff in analyzing alternative transportation methods and routes, including rail transport,

analyze and recommend appropriate reports from transportation tracking software (PeopleNet), and research into alternative vehicle configurations and energy systems for heavy duty trucks Requirements: Strong research skills Ability to effectively use Microsoft Office products 3 years completed (preferred) toward undergraduate degree in fields similar to Transportation Planning or Transportation Engineering This work will be best performed and of most benefit to a student with a Transportation planning, Transportation engineering, Supply chain management focus. Location: King Street Center-201 South Jackson Street, Seattle, WA, field and offsite facilities as needed. 9. Warehouse Management Intern will gain an understanding of warehouse operations, cycle counts inventory accountability, and customer service. Intern will assist in maintaining specialized inventory, stocking shelves, unloading trucks, picking up and delivering items, and working with internal customers to meet their inventory needs. Requirements: Knowledge of basic accounting and bookkeeping principles Basic knowledge of warehousing equipment and supplies Basic mathematics skills Ability to operate forklift and other material handling equipment Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds This work will be best performed and of most benefit to a student with a focus on warehouse management or other closely related field of study. Location: West Point Treatment Plant -1400 Discovery Park Blvd, Seattle, WA 10. Web Design/Communications Student will further develop skills and knowledge in the area of communications including web design/development and records management for the Property Inventory and Asset Management Project/ Program. Student will assist in analysis of the current SharePoint and document records system, expansion of the program via SharePoint, training of staff, web design, and entry of important real estate documents into the system. Requirements: Area of study must be in planning, engineering, architecture, landscape architecture, or public administration. Organizational and marketing skills. Skill in web, power point and graphic design. Strategic planning skills Ability to effectively manage time. Real estate and/or regulatory knowledge desirable but not required This work will be best performed and of most benefit to a student with a Communications, public relations, marketing, web development, web-based design, graphics, real estate, or business focus.
