LWD vs Wireline Cost/Benefit Analysis for Pluspetrol

Juan Arca Maldonado, Measurement While Drilling-3, PEC This is an abstract of the paper written for the LWD project to be presented to Schlumberger and Pluspetrol.

Abstract Objectives. The Objective of this Project is trying to Show Our Client Pluspetrol that the use of LWD tools in Wells of Block 8 and Block 1AB are economic and operationally reliable. Their opinion is that LWD runs are too expensive, but they have experienced problems logging 50 % of their wells. The wireline logging company has a lot of difficulty logging the holes, which result in several tool sticking situations. Moreover, on one occasion the line was cut trying to retrieve the tool and left a radioactive source in the hole. In areas where the environment is protected by regulations, these problems result in lost time and extra wiper trips to recondition the hole. When wireline logging cannot be obtained, the client calls D&M to run a LWD tool in a wiper trip (Recorded Mode), which results in waiting time for a special flight, since the LWD tools are not at the rig site. Only resistivity Tools are available so other services cannot be provided. Based on the analysis of the statistics of those wells, we could show the client the amount of money that could be saved and compare it directly with the costs of the use of LWD tools for logging in recorded mode. The results of these analysis could show us that the LWD runs are a good option for the Block 1AB and Block 8.

However a wireline run could be performed after the LWD run trying to get other data needed for the client. If a problem were encountered, not other attempt would be made.

Activities. - A simple estimation

of Costs of LWD and Porosity Tools vs. Wireline logging indicates that they are not cost efficient to be run in Pluspetrol locations. These initial values, result from comparing the cost of the runs without considering additional costs related to logging problems. Additionally, the client lost time, money and could not obtain all desired information. The following items should be considered when analyzing the cost efficiency of using LWD tools Cost of LWD tools vs. Logging Runs Comparison between Wireline logs and LWD logs. Determine NPT in logging Runs and the extra money involved. The proximity of the Block 1AB and Block 8. Yearly average number of wells to be drilled Logistics in the Jungle. Advantages of using LWD tools during drilling to have real time logs. Time to Run a logging vs. LWD

Value for the Client: Pluspetrol Improvement in logging services quality by ensuring right tools are being utilized on the right applications and hence get more value for every dollar spent in their operations. Pluspetrol assigned one Drilling Engineer to give us all the data from their wells. Value for Schlumberger Enhance our image as an integrated solution (REW and D&M) provider for the Clients needs. Additionally, the enhancement in service quality will be an intangible asset to SLB, which will help us optimize our resources for the operations in this field.
