Try to leave earlier in the morning. Even 10-15 minutes can make the difference between frantically rushing to your desk and having time to ease into your day. Prioritize tasks. Make a list of tasks you have to do, and tackle them in order of importance. Do the high-priority items first. If you have something particularly unpleasant to do, get it over with early. The rest of your day will be more pleasant as a result. Break projects into small steps. If a large project seems overwhelming, make a step-by-step plan. Focus on one manageable step at a time, rather than taking on everything at once. Delegate responsibility. You dont have to do it all yourself. If other people can take care of the task, why not let them? Let go of the desire to control or oversee every little step. Youll be letting go of unnecessary stress in the process. Be willing to compromise. When you ask someone to contribute differently to a task, revise a deadline, or change their behavior at work, be willing to do the same. The five key skills of emotional intelligence


There are five key skills that you need to master in order to raise your emotional intelligence and manage stress at work. Realize when youre stressed, recognize your particular stress response, and become familiar with sensual cues that can rapidly calm and energize you. The best way to reduce stress quickly is through the senses: through sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch. But each person responds differently to sensory input, so you need to find things that are soothing to you. Stay connected to your internal emotional experience so you can appropriately manage your own emotions. Your moment-to-moment emotions influence your thoughts and actions, so pay attention to your feelings and factor them into your decision making at work. If you ignore your emotions you wont be able to fully understand your own motivations and needs, or to communicate effectively with others. Recognize and effectively use nonverbal cues and body language. In many cases, what we say is less important than how we say it or the other nonverbal signals we send out, such as eye contact, facial expression, tone of voice, posture, gesture and touch. Your nonverbal messages can either produce a sense of interest, trust, and desire for connectionor they can generate confusion, distrust, and stress. You also need to be able to accurately read and respond to the nonverbal cues that other people send you at work. Develop the capacity to meet challenges with humor. There is no better stress buster than a hearty laugh and nothing reduces stress quicker in the workplace than mutually shared humor. But, if the laugh is at someone elses expense, you may end up with more rather than less stress. Resolve conflict positively. Resolving conflict in healthy, constructive ways can strengthen trust between people and relieve workplace stress and tension. When handling emotionallycharged situations, stay focused in the present by disregarding old hurts and resentments, connect with your emotions, and hear both the words and the nonverbal cues being used. If a conflict cant be resolved, choose to end the argument, even if you still disagree.

As you learn to manage your job stress and improve your work relationships, youll have more control over your ability to think clearly and act appropriately. You will be able to break habits that add to your stress at work and youll even be able to change negative ways of thinking about things that only add to your stress.

Eliminate self-defeating behaviors


Many of us make job stress worse with negative thoughts and behavior. If you can turn around these self-defeating habits, youll find employer-imposed stress easier to handle.

Resist perfectionism. No project, situation, or decision is ever perfect, so trying to attain perfection on everything will simply add unnecessary stress to your day. When you set unrealistic goals for yourself or try to do too much, youre setting yourself up to fall short. Aim to do your best, no one can ask for more than that. Clean up your act. If youre always running late, set your clocks and watches fast and give yourself extra time. If your desk is a mess, file and throw away the clutter; just knowing where everything is saves time and cuts stress. Make to-do lists and cross off items as you accomplish them. Plan your day and stick to the schedule youll feel less overwhelmed. Flip your negative thinking. If you see the downside of every situation and interaction, youll find yourself drained of energy and motivation. Try to think positively about your work, avoid negative-thinking co-workers, and pat yourself on the back about small accomplishments, even if no one else does. Dont try to control the uncontrollable. Many things at work are beyond our control particularly the behavior of other people. Rather than stressing out over them, focus on the things you can control such as the way you choose to react to problems.

Five Ways to Dispel Stress


Take time away. When stress is mounting at work, try to take a quick break and move away from the stressful situation. Take a stroll outside the workplace if possible, or spend a few minutes meditating in the break room. Physical movement or finding a quiet place to regain your balance can quickly reduce stress. Talk it over with someone. In some situations, simply sharing your thoughts and feelings with someone you trust can help reduce stress. Talking over a problem with someone who is both supportive and empathetic can be a great way to let off steam and relieve stress. Connect with others at work. Developing friendships with some of your co-workers can help buffer you from the negative effects of stress. Remember to listen to them and offer support when they are in need as well. Look for humor in the situation. When used appropriately, humor is a great way to relieve stress in the workplace. When you or those around you start taking things too seriously, find a way to lighten the mood by sharing a joke or funny story.

Here are some signs you might be causing stress in the workplace. 1. You pile on responsibility after responsibility. Most employees are already overloaded with miles-long to-do lists. An employer who assigns additional work, especially late in the day or too close to deadline, can create worried and overwhelmed employees. Ballard recommends monitoring employees' workloads. That way, when it comes time to assign a new task, you'll have a better idea of who has the bandwidth to handle it. 2. You make all the decisions. Yes, you're the boss -- you're allowed to assign work and delegate tasks. But assignments are more stressful if you don't give employees at least the opportunity to voice how much is already on their plate and what they think they can handle. That lack of control is a well-known cause of work stress -maybe the biggest workplace stressor of all, says Ballard. Employees who have a say about what they do at work and how they do it report greater job satisfaction. Employees might also see you as inflexible to their personal needs, like family-friendly scheduling, if this is your style of managing. Of course, not every employee wants total freedom. "The key is understanding how much structure employees need in the workplace and trying to match their needs," says Balard. 3. You don't give feedback. It's no surprise that sometimes employees worry about how well they are performing at their job. And in an economic climate where eager replacements are waiting in the wings, subordinates are likely worrying more about how they're doing, but might not feel it's okay to ask. An employee in this scenario may also be concerned about their chances for advancement or promotion. Show your support by asking employees these two simple questions, says Ballard: Are you getting enough support from me? What could I do to help you get your job done? 4. Your instructions are wishy-washy. Confusion about work duties, company goals or priorities can add to an employee's stress level.

Someone who is unsure of what is expected of her or feels like she is wearing too many hats is more likely to feel stressed, according to the CDC. 5. You don't take into account each worker's skills and interests. Underutilizing talent by assigning tasks outside of a worker's skill set or with little meaning can lead to frustration and stress on the job. "Make sure people have assignments that challenge them and are interesting to them," Ballard says. 6. You don't value the office. Maybe it's noisy, or your employees can't all sit near each other, or the desk chairs are giving everyone back pain. Unpleasant office conditions should not be underestimated as stressors -- especially if the person in charge is ignoring them. "Make sure the physical environment is healthy and positive, so you're not adding strain just because of the physical office," says Balard. That might be as simple as providing quiet rooms in an open-office setting or as grand as creating a nap room. 7. You could be nicer. There's a difference between being stern and being mean. About 35 percent of employees have reported feeling bullied at work, and mostly by bosses, according to a Career Builder survey. And the effects go beyond "just" stress, to related conditions like depression and insomnia. Take some time to reflect upon whether your behavior could be perceived as hostile, Ballard suggests, and if it has created a pattern of negative effects on your employees. Commit to putting a stop to bullying in the workplace by other managers or employees by making sure you fully understand your company's policies on such behavior and following through with the consequences. 8. You are stressed. Your emotions -- just like your flu germs -- can spread throughout the office if you don't handle them properly. You might be rubbing off on subordinates, Ballard says, if you're not dealing with your own stress levels well. Listen to some music, take a quick break to visit a website that makes you laugh, do some easy desk stretches or find another five-minute, office-appropriate stress buster to help you out. Multiple Sources of Work Stress


One of the reasons that work stress is so difficult to define is that it comes from many different sources. Some of the most common sources of job-related stress include: Environmental Stress - Some stress that people experience in the workplace is related to the physical environment in which they work. This type of stress can be associated with workplace safety issues, the configuration of one's work area, the type of furniture or equipment that must be used in order to perform job functions, and other variables. Uncertainty - People who aren't sure where they stand in their jobs often experience a high degree of work stress. This issue can be tied to fear of job loss, hoping for recognition or a promotion, a lack of feedback on one's performance, or other issues. People Issues - A great deal of workplace stress is related to people problems, such as coping with difficult co-workers, dealing with a negative or uncommunicative supervisor, peer pressure, and more. Performance Pressure- Feeling pressure to produce a certain quality or quantity of work can be a workplace stressor. This can be tied to sales or production quotas, manufacturing standards, impending deadlines, and other factors.

Definition of work stress


The U.S Department of Health has defined Job Stress as: "...the harmful physical and emotional responses that occur when the requirements of a job do not match the capabilities, resources or needs of the worker". Under this definition it is clear that you can be stressed at work, not just if you are not fully able or trained to do a job, but also if the nature of the job is such that it does not meet your emotional or psychological needs. Clearly, if specific high demands are also being placed on you this can lead to considerable pressure and stress.

Factors leading to work stress


The following factors, amongst others, can lead to work stress: Heavy workload Having little control or influence in decisions Tension or conflict with other employees Poor supervision or management Lack of belief in the objectives of the organisation Job insecurity or lack of opportunity to develop Lack of interest or fulfilment in the nature of the work Unpleasant or dangerous work environments

Effects of work stress


Studies suggest that work stress can increase your risk for heart disease, psychological disorders and other health problems. Early warning sign of potential health risks can include headaches, disturbed sleep and difficulty in concentrating. If you are experiencing any of these signs to a significant degree you should consider consulting your doctor.
