INTRODUCTION

1.1 INTRODUCTION The construction is a project of 40 storey building or known as residential and hotel center. This building consists of (building detail.) The name given for this building is MercuZikay therefore this project name is MercuZikay Project. It is developed by a big developer company named ,ZikaySdnBhd who is also the owner of the MercuZikay building. MercuZikay project is the 21st project developed and conducted by their own sub-company contractor, KembangSerantauSdn Bhd. The previous completed project was the (detail project seksyen 7). The MercuZikay name was given to the building because Mercu stands for the proudness of the company building the first and tallest building in kampong baru area, the Zikay name was choosen based on the name of the company (ZikaySdnBhd) that owns the building. The location of the building are in the middle area of kampong baru where on a flat but muddy conditioned site.

The MercuZikay project costs around RM513,332,816.55 which contains 2 storey basement, 1 storey lobby, 15 storey of 100 units hotel rooms, 20 storey of 200 units service apartment which includes 2 luxurious double storey penthouse costs around RM3,000,000 each with a magnificent view of Petronas Twin Towers (KLCC) and KL Tower. Located at KampungBaru which is in the middle part of Kuala Lumpur, strategically located for whom to stay or relax in Kuala Lumpur. It is also nearby to some main cities such as Ampang, Cheras, Damansara and Petaling Jaya and the most important is nearby to a lot of point of interest such as shopping mall The Pavillion, Bukit Bintang Plaza, Sungei Wang Plaza, Lowyat Plaza and The Times Square Shopping Mall. Other than that, MercuZikayare also nearby to traditional places such as Chow Kit Road and JalanTuanku Abdul Rahman. There are a company called PKB, Pembangunan KampungBaru operated under ZikaySdnBhd, this company is a company that specialize and helps to improve the building growth or building development around

KampungBaru. This PKB company helps to fulfil the community request and demand which live around KampungBaru.

The thing that makes Mercu Zikay building different than the other are that it has a modern design with a larger capacity can fit in one building, also because of the modern design, it will attract more people from suburbs to move and live in Kampung Baru Kuala Lumpur. Since Mercu Zikay Building is a high rise building, have basement floor, and constructed on a muddy area, capping beam is constructed as one of the building's important structure to with hold its super heavy load avoid from drifting even an inch. The capping beam is basically built on a Contiguous Bored Pile which is a shallow foundation type of pile. The capping beam is constructed all the way around the building in order to hold the building's structure. This type of structure usually applies to high rise building or a building with basement.

The capping beam built in this project is according to the size of the building therefore the capping beam is quite big for a 40 storey building. The concrete grade used for the capping beam is grade 45 and the reinforcement bar used varies to the location of the capping beam. Based in this report according to the site supervision, construction of capping beam needs a proper management and construction method to ensure its high quality, performance and avoid from any type of failure from happens. Therefore, the important person who will play a major role in the construction of this capping beam are the contractor and the consultant such as quantity surveyor and civil engineer, they need to give full responsibility and corporation to make sure the capping beam is constructed at its best.

Basically, the function of the capping beam is to hold the building in its perimeter, around the building there are contiguous bored pile buried in the soil with the depth of almost 30 meters, therefore this capping beam acts as a glue which would hold between the building and the contiguous bored pile. Capping beam is a part of the structure of the building.

1.2 THE STUDY BACKGROUND

During my practical period for 20 weeks at Kembang Serantau Sdn Bhd, I have been given a lot of task in a lot of aspects such as to supervise the construction works at the construction site, to create the everyday site diary, to draw the cross sectional of the capping beam, and to draw the starter bar from the capping beam. Thus, based on the task given, is was able to see by myself on how the construction works are made and how the general workers conduct all of the works. Other than that, I as a practical student has also took some notes at the site for the company's record, some of the aspects in the notes are such as work progress at the construction site, record the workers attendance, construction materials used, usage of machineries, type of machineries at site, and also fuels such as diesel and petrol. Based on this job taking notes, I could increase my knowledge and experience level in construction works and also I could help the company to keep records of the site. The construction works started on the May of 2013 and the construction work of capping beam started on the third quarter of my practical period, therefore I was unable to see the complete product of capping beam around the building. But I still have the chance to see how the works are done in constructing the capping beam such as the excavation of soil, hacking the Contiguous Bored Pile to take out the starter bar, bar bending, wood carpenting, installation of reinforcement bar, installation of formwork and concreting works for the capping beam. I also had the chance to enter the meeting with consultants, internal meeting and method of construction works meeting, a lot of issues has been risen up but together they create a solution. Structure is the main work in constructing the capping beam because capping beam acts as one of the structure here. Other than that, during my practical period, I am also able to see and learn more construction process such as the construction of Bored Pile from the beginning to the completion level. The construction of these bored pile needs a highly skilled engineer and quantity surveyor because the bored pile is the type of foundation that will withhold the high rise 40 storey building, so bored pile plays a main role in the earthwork stage.

1.3 OBJECTIVE OF STUDY

This report contains three (3) objectives:-

To understand party/parties involved and the problems occurred in the construction period of the capping beam with its solutions.

ii) iii)

To understand the method of construction of capping beam. To understand the materials, apparatus and machineries used to construct the capping beam.

1.4 SCOPE OF STUDY

The scope of study of this report covers the type of structure to be built after the earthwork of a high rise building. The type of structure built is the capping beam. Other than, it also covers all the materials, tools and machineries used in the construction process in the beginning until the end work of capping beam construction. The process or method used to construct the capping beam would also be explained in this report. Finally, there will be an explanation about the sub-contractor involved in the construction of the capping beam.

1.5 METHODS OF STUDY

1.5.1 Main method i) Interview Interview is one of the most common method used in gaining information and also very effective among the others. Interview method can be completed by directly face to face meeting or interviewing with the person who is involved in the construction works of capping beam. The face to face method is used because the person or the party mostly the general workers could give their cooperation by giving information and explanation about the construction works of capping beam. Most of the works are done by the general workers therefore the general workers has more experience and expert on the works and know all the problems related to the works and also the solution if a problem presists. ii) Observation Observation is the other method that can help in gaining a lot of information. This method are not just for gaining information, but also good in learning something, it can help increase the level of knowledge about the construction of capping beam if observed properly. Any untruthful works on construction site can be detected using the observation method. Finally, the originality of works can be clearly seen by using this method.

1.5.2 Secondary Method i) Printed Media / Book Reference This type of method of study is a very supportive method in gaining any information about the construction of capping beam. However, this method is too typical because the information or facts noted in various reference book more to pertinence of data where it is more to theoretical review. This is because of what contained in the reference book are dependent only on research and study. This method is one of the easy methods of study because reference books can be found at any library and bookstore. Reference from printed media is also important because it also assist in finding any information that can be trusted. The different between this type of method and book reference is the printed media would keep on updating the information from time to time. Thus, latest information can be obtained by this type method of study.

ii) Electronic Media Electronic media is the most easiest and fastest method of study that can be used to gain any type of information. However, the variety of information that can be obtained by this method of study are mostly have to be checked the validity of the fact because most of the article or information from this electronic media have no recognized author neither publisher. An example of electronic media method is the facility of internet. Electronic media is one of the secondary method as shown in Figure 1.1.

Kembang Serantau Sendirian Berhad is a private limited company and the head quarters are located in Kampung Baru Kuala Lumpur. The Kembang Serantau Sendirian Berhad is a Main Contractor company operates under its main company, Zikay Group of Companies Sdn Bhd. Kembang Serantau Sendirian Berhad is situated at Aras 7, Bangunan Zikay, No 53, Jalan Raja Alang, Kampung Baru, 50300 Kuala Lumpur. Kembang Serantau Sendirian Berhad has been operational at this location for more than 10 years. It is a self dedicated company.

Kembang Serantau Sendirian Berhad is a non-indigenous company which leaded and conducted by a group of multi-discipline of professional with good and collective experience over than twenty years in managing a construction project. The services that are given by the Kembang Serantau Sendirian Berhad are such as Civil Engineering, Landscaping, Building Infrastructure, Trading of Construction Material, and also Oil and Gas. Kembang Serantau Sendirian Berhad has constructed a lot of projects such as commercial houses in Bandar Baru Bangi, Selangor State Theater in Shah Alam Selangor, 6 blocks of 17 Storey Apartments and 3 storey Shop lots at Pekan Kuang, Mukim Gombak, Selangor.

Kembang Serantau Sdn Bhd, a Private Limited Company was incorporated on 5th September 1991 with Authorized Capital RM25,000,000 and Paid Up Capital RM 15,000.000. The company operates under its main company called Zikay Group of Companies Sdn Bhd.

As an organization with multi - displine, the company is managed by an excellent team of qualified and technical-know-how proffessionals who had years of experience and skill in all aspects of management, human resources and financial.

Since its establishment in 1991, the company had achieved excellence in building, civil engineering and landscaping works which entitle them to be awarded the Class A Contractor license with Bumiputra status and CIDB Grade G7.
