FIRSTBARGAININGWITH21STCMHACQUISITION
OnMarch13and14,theNewspaperGuildsBargainingCommitteehaditsfirstmeetingswith21stCMH AcquisitionCompany,thecompanythatisbuyingtheMacombDailyandDailyTribunefromtheJournalRegister Company(JRC).21stCMHmadeaproposaltomodifythecurrentcollectivebargainingagreement,includingthe following:

Eliminateallworkjurisdictionlanguage. Eliminatetherequirementthateditorialworkbeassignedtobargainingunitemployees. WorkofGuildmemberscouldbeoutsourcedandtheirjobseliminated. Managementcandobargainingunitwork. Eliminatetherestrictiononlayoffofclassifiedsalesemployeesduetotransferringtheirworkoutofthe bargainingunit. Eliminatetherestrictiononstringersdisplacingregularemployees. Eliminatetherightoflaidoffemployeestobumplesssenioremployeesinotherclassifications. EliminatethecurrentNEHPBlueCareNetworkhealthinsuranceplan. Placeemployeesinacompanyhealthcareplan(theEmployersIBEEPOandIBPPPOPlans)withno informationwhatsoeveraboutthisplannoexplanationofwhotheprovideris,doctorsandhospitalsinthe network,scopeofcoverage,benefits,annualdeductibles,coinsurance,servicecopays,drugcoverage, annualoutofpocketmaximums,lifetimemaximums,etc. Eliminatetherightofcurrenttoemployeesgetfirstconsiderationforjobopenings. Eliminatetherequirementthatemployeeshaveregularshifts. Eliminatetherestrictionagainstparttimeandtemporaryemployeesdisplacingfulltimeemployees. Thecompanywouldhavetherighttomodifythecompensationstructure,sothecompanycouldreducepay orgrantraisesonlytosomepeople,andtherewouldbenobargainingoverpay. Eliminatelanguagestatingthatemployeesarenotrequiredtocrossanotherunionspicketline. Eliminatethesuccessorlanguagestatingthatifthecompanysellsthenewspapers,thecompanymustrequire thepurchasertokeeptheemployeesandhonorthecollectivebargainingagreement.

Thesechangesareamajorassaultonthejobsecurityofemployeeswhohaveworkedhardandmadegreat sacrificesforthesenewspapers.Theyarealsoanassaultontherighttobargainwagesandcriticalbenefitslikehealth care. Needlesstosay,theBargainingCommitteetold21stCMHthatitsproposalwasunacceptable.Wealsotold 21stCMHthatwecouldnegotiateoneconomics,butpreservingjobswasourpriority,andwewerenotinterestedin acontractthatallowedourworktobeoutsourced.Wesaidwewouldnotgiveuptherighttobargainwagesand healthcare.WesetmorebargainingsessionsforMarch30and31andApril1. WeaskedofficersandmembersofthePressmenandTeamsterstositinonourbargainingsessions.They helpedusconveythemessageto21stCMHthatitsplantooutsourceworkandeliminaterightsandbenefitsof employeeswasnotacceptable.

TherewillbeajointmembershipmeetingthisSunday,March17,12:00noon,attheGraphic CommunicationsConference/TeamstersDistrictCouncil3,11420E.NineMileRd.,Warren,MI(justWestof HooverRoad).Besuretoattendthismeetingtolearnmoreaboutthefirstbargainingwith21stCMHandour continuingeffortstoprotectjobsandgetgoodcontracts.
