Why Lisbon?

Population

√ 28.7% of the Portuguese youth (0-14 years) population (16.2% of total Lisbon’s population), lives in
Lisbon, the second largest region, after the North, in terms of total population
√ In 2010, the effective growth of Lisbon’s population was 0.32%. The natural component contribution
to this increase was the largest at national level (0.23%)
√ Resident Population on 31.12.2010: 2.840 million individuals (0.6% increase in 10 years) –
Projections for 2025 (Eurostat): 2.992 million individuals
√ The migratory component contributes significantly to Lisbon’s population growth, giving it a
multicultural characteristic

√ In the school year 2010/2011, students enrolled in primary and secondary education accounted for
27.6% and 25.4% of national total, respectively

√ In the 98 higher education institutions, located in Lisbon, the number of students that enrolled
exceeded 150,000 and graduates were 29,025 (36.9% of the national total). The areas of Business
Studies (Management / Economics / Accounting), Engineering and Mathematics and Health, were
chosen, respectively, by 16.7%, 14.9% and 12.2 % of the enrolled students. Graduates in these
same areas represented, respectively, 15.7%, 10.8% and 16.5% of total
√ About 29% of Lisbon students enrolled in higher education have chosen S & T areas

√ The services sector (trade, real estate and construction) dominates the economic activity in Lisbon.
Nevertheless, the industrial activity in the Setúbal Peninsula (NUT III) still has a significant role in
the economic development of this sub-region (27.3% of GVA and 27.8% in Employment)
√ The competitiveness and innovation dynamics of the Lisbon region is based on a diversified group
of sectors: food industry; construction and building materials, chemical, pharmaceutical,
biotechnology, transport equipment, automotive and services (software, telecommunications,
logistics, financial sector, distribution, tourism)
√ In 2011 Lisbon’s exports registered a 28% growth compared to the previous year, despite the
remaining trade balance deficit

representative industries are the following: Food industry (13.7% of total Manufacturing Industry
turnover), Automotive industry (9.1%), Non-Metallic Minerals (6.3%) and Machinery and Equipment
