Why the Centre Region?
The Centre has the second largest land area in mainland Portugal, with an international land border
of 270 km and a coastline of 280 km

The Centre region (NUT II) covers 8 Districts: Coimbra, Leiria, Castelo Branco, and part of Aveiro,
Viseu, Guarda, Santarm and Lisboa districts. For statistical purposes this Region is divided into 12 NUT III, with different characteristics:

Its geographical location allows the Centre region to have a strategic positioning in the connection
between the two major metropolitan areas of Lisbon and Porto

With excellent water resources (underground and surface), the Centre has very good conditions for
the development of hydropower and mini-hydropower energy sources

With a rich natural heritage combined with beautiful landscapes and environmental surroundings,
the Centre has a strong potential for tourism development

20% of the youth (0-14 years) population (13.7% of total Centres population), in Portugal, is living
in the Centre, the third largest region (after the North and Lisbon) in terms of total population

Education
In the school year 2010/2011, students that enrolled in primary and secondary education accounted
for 20% and 22.4% of the national total, respectively

Between the school year 2006/2007 and 2010/2011 the number of students enrolled in higher
education increased by 8.8%

Graduated students

In the 60 higher education institutions, located in the Centre region, the number of students that
enrolled exceeded 85,000 and graduates were 17,153 (22% of national total). The areas of Business Studies (Management / Economics / Accounting), Engineering and Mathematics and Health were chosen, respectively, by 15.7%, 15.6% and 14% of the enrolled students. Graduates in these same areas represented, respectively, 13.6%, 13.9% and 15.8% of total

The Centre region has the largest number of students enrolled in higher education in areas of S&T
(30.4% of total)

A region with valuable natural resources: non-metallic minerals (clay and kaolin) which are
important to the ceramic, glass and cement industries and a forest landscape (47% of the Centre region) that enables the development of wood, pulp and paper industries

The Centre area comprises of four specialized industrial areas: Estarreja (chemical industry),
Covilh (textiles and clothing); Marinha Grande (glass, plastics and moulds) and Aveiro (metal products and ceramics)

The Centre region has an important fishing sector: good infrastructures, responsible for almost 30%
of total nominal catches, 68 units for fishing processing (2008), concentrated in Murtosa, lhavo and Figueira da Foz (78% of total)

accounting for 23% of total

The manufacturing industry is represented by more than 18,000 companies, which generate a
turnover exceeding 15 billion (22.5% of national turnover) and have approximately 178,000 employees. The most representative industries are the following: Food industry (19% of total Manufacturing Industry turnover), Metal products (13.3%), Non-Metallic Minerals (11.6%), Pulp and Paper (7.4%) and Automotive industry (6.2%)
