The grading scale I employ is a traditional 100% system: A = 90-100%, B = 80-89%, C = 70-79%, D = 60-69%, F = 59% and below. There will be two exams throughout the course of the semester. These exams are not cumulative though terms and ideas that you learn at the beginning of the semester will have importance and bearing throughout the course. A study guide will be distributed before the exam. Exams will consist of some or all of the following: slide identications, slide comparisons, map quiz of Italy, short essays, terms, and long essay. A three-page lm and book review of the documentary Rape of Europa and Ilaria Dagnini Breys The Venus Fixers: The Remarkable Story of the Allied Soldiers Who Saved Italys Art During World War II is worth 20% of your grade and is due on the rst day of class in Italy (May 20). You can digitally rent the documentary for a small fee on amazon. We will also have a discussion on the fate of art in Italy during World War II on our rst class day in Montepulciano so come to class prepared to participate. Instructions for this book review will be distributed at our rst meeting in April. 20% of your grade is your Research Paper which is due after you return to the States (7-8 pages). Your research paper topic should focus on some aspect of Italian art that you want to explore more. More instructions and possible topics will be distributed at our rst meeting in April. Finally, 10% of your grade is devoted to a presentation in this course that you will give during one of the excursions. Your presentation must be 8-10 minutes in length. Your object/site will be assigned at our initial meeting in April so that you can prepare your presentation before arriving in Italy. A note on attendance: class attendance for lectures and eld trips is mandatory. The program has a policy of ten points off the nal average for every unexcused absence. That is, if you miss a class, your grade is automatically reduced by a letter grade. I overslept or I missed the train are not valid excused for missing a class or eld trip. The only exception is medical necessity, but dont be mistaken about what that means. It means you are so ill you require medical attention (which will be provided, of course). Hangovers and snifes do not count. This syllabus is an agreement between the professor and student to respectively provide and complete a worthy learning experience. By remaining a registered student in this course, the student has identied their understanding of the obligations set forth in this syllabus for satisfactory completion of the course. Class Schedule
