Lesson Review Form ECED 329 Name _Anna Achterhoff________ Lesson Topic : Directional words______ Todays Date ______________2/25/13__________

Date of the Lesson ______2/25/13_________________________ 1. State one objective and describe the ways in which your students met that objective. My objective was for students to be able to correctly demonstrate physical positioning of directional words using objects. The students met this objective by showing me their knowledge of directional words and how to represent the words using stuffed animals. During my lesson I had students come up to the board to use a smartboard activity that had students demonstrate directional words by moving an object on the board. I also had students act-out a story in which they had to pretend to go under, around, between, under, and behind different obstacles. 2. Describe how you sequenced the lesson so that your students were guided from their known experiences to new learning. I sequenced my lesson so students were guided by known experiences to new learning by first reviewing what the directional words as a whole group. I then read the students a story in which the directional words were depicted. After the story students were asked to participate in an interactive activity using the smartboard where they were able to display their knowledge of the words. While acting-out the imaginary story students used past experience of crawling under, over, between, and around obstacles. After the lesson I assessed the students knowledge and recorded the data. 3. Describe the kind(s) of groupings you used and the effectiveness of your use of grouping. The grouping strategy I used was based off of the order they sit on the rug during whole group time. I asked the first row to meet me at the table first. I believe this to be an effective way of grouping because these students are used to sitting beside one another on the rug without distraction there for they feel comfortable in small group with the same students that sit together during whole group time. 4. Describe one way in which you addressed the individual needs of one child or a small group of children. One way I addressed individual needs of a student is by having a particular talkative student sit in front of me during the story so I could watch his behavior and call his name if he acted out of line. At one part in the story when this particular student was talking I called his name and asked him a question from the book to make sure he stayed engaged. 5. If your management of the lesson presented difficulties, what were they and how did you handle them? The only part of the lesson that I felt as though could have used better management was when the students were able to stand up and move around the room while acting out the directional words that were in the imaginary story. The students really got into acting-out the story while traveling around the classroom, at the part in the story where students were asked to crawl under something a few students made their way under the tables becoming a little distracted. If I could do it again I would explain the actions a little more in depth before we started acting out to insure the students stayed to schedule with the story. 6. Describe your assessment process and the ways in which the process provided/did not provide you with an accurate evaluation of how well the children learned the content.

I assessed three different times in correspondence to the lesson. The first assessment was a pre-assessment and this was done by asking individual students to physically depict directional words by moving stuffed animals, I recorded the results. The second assessment, during assessment, was done by observing the students ability to correctly demonstrate directional words by participating in the smartboard activity and by acting-out the words from the story. My final assessment was done after the lesson had been completed by having the students again depict the directional words by arranging stuffed animal in a way that represented the given word correctly, results were noted and recorded. 7. Describe the manner in which your lesson addressed more than one of the developmental realms of the child. My lesson addressed more than one of the developmental realms for children by incorporating cognitive thinking by asking the students to recall prior knowledge of directional words. I also used kinetic learning by having the students actively engaged physically acting-out the imaginary story that has directional words. The smartboard activity also gave students the ability to physically move an object to represent the directional word. I used different realms because I have noticed not all children learn the same way so when you present the content in different forms they are much more likely to fully grasp the concept. 8. Identify the dimension of multicultural education (i.e., James Banks notion of content integration, knowledge construction, prejudice reduction, equity pedagogy, or empowering school culture) that was most critical for you to consider as you taught this lesson. Why do you believe your chosen dimension was most important for this learning experience? The most critical multicultural method of education of my lesson would have to be the knowledge of construction. I believe this dimension to be most important for the learning experiences because children had to use their knowledge to be able to physically construct the action that corresponded with the directional word given. 9. When you teach your next lesson, what teaching strategy will you work to improve? When I teach my next lesson I will like to work to improve my optimal teaching ability. I feel as though a few students bring things up during whole group that I could use as a teaching moment with the group instead of always directing their attention immediately back on track. For example, a student was talking out loud about the hot air balloon that was in the story I read, looking back I wish I would have talked more about that form of transportation because Im sure some of the students werent very familiar with what a hot air balloon is. 10. How would you rate your implementation of this lesson?

Satisfactory Why would you rate your lesson this way? I feel much more confident teaching this lesson than I did the first lesson I thought. I rate my job as satisfactory because looking back there are a few things I would have done differently that I mentioned in the information above, but as a whole I feel as though I was able to get the concept of directional words across to the students, especially based off of the pre and post assessments.
