Anna Achterhoff Todays date: 3/29/13 Date of lesson: 3-27-13 Lesson Topic: Careers in our Community 1.

My objective for this lesson was that by the conclusion students will be able to explain what a career is, as well as be able to give two examples of a careers and their description. 2. I sequenced the lesson in order to guide the students by first having them think about the careers their parents have, and if they wanted to stand up and share with the class what kind of careers their parents were in. I did this before we talked about the different careers in our community to get their brains thinking and in hopes it would spark some ideas of examples of careers, as well as to give students the opportunity to make personal connections to the content I was about to teach. 3. The thought process I used to organize my small groups was to help speed up time as quickly as possible. I selected first the students who I felt like grasped the concept completely. I did this so the rest of the small group was not waiting on a student that may have trouble thinking or remembering what we talked about in whole group. I did not get to see every student in small group for this final lesson due to the time frame I had scheduled for my observation. 4. One of the ways I addressed individual needs of the students was by asking the students that are usually easily distracted questions about the book or smart board activity to keep them engaged the entire time during the lesson. When I was asking students to come to the board to participate in the activity with the board a few of the students could not reach the objects on the board that they were trying to move, therefore I got a stool and helped the children on and off of it if they could not reach the board. 5. My management of the final lesson went smoothly. I feel as though the students have grown to respect me and appear to be interested in the content that I am teaching them. Whenever I could tell that a student was starting to mentally drift away from whole group I would ask them an individual question to pull them back on track. I also used the cup with popsicle sticks with each students name on one to select the student that got to come up each time to participate in the lesson. By doing this I eliminated the students from yelling, Thats not fair I had my hand up first! or He/She already had a turn!. 6. I assessed each student three times in correspondence with this lesson. The first assessement was done individual by simply asking each student if they knew what the word career means. All of the students had no clue what the word means. The second time I assessed the students was during the lesson while in whole group. I made sure that each student had a turn to either participate of speak during this time. The final assessment I constructed and recorded was carried out during small groups, which consisted of 5 students sitting with me. I asked the students one by one if they knew what a career is and if they could give me two examples and explain them to me. It was really neat to see that after the lesson they all had examples to give me.

I consciously incorporated more than one of the developmental realms into my lesson. One of the methods was kinesthetic learning, this was done by having the students physically come up to the board and move the correct picture of each career described. Another method used was cognitive thinking by asking the students to think about the careers that their parents have or ones they have seen on the way to school or on the way home from school. I would also ask the group open-ended questions about each career causing them to really think to give the answer or explanation. 8. Knowledge construction is a demission of education that was most critical to me for the teaching of this lesson. I believe this was most important because the students had to use prior information to construct an answer to the questions I asked like, have you ever been to the dentist/doctor? And what was it that they did to you while you were there?. This allowed the students to make the connection of personal experiences they had outside the classroom that relates to the content we are talking about. 9. Although I will not be teaching another lesson for this observation, if I were I cwould ensure each student got a chance to participate in the lesson at least more than once. I would also have liked to use more interactive activities during whole group because it would keep everyone engaged the whole time. 10. I would rate myself as satisfactory on implementing specific content into this lesson. I rate myself this way because I feel as though the lesson went rather smoothly, I feel as though the students were a little more wild than usual because I taught my lesson at the end of their class and they were not able to go outside for recess that day. As a whole I feel as though the students gained the content I was teaching and that is all that really matters in the big picture.
