Dear Terrace Lake

When Kim and I first began this journey, we believed in faith that God would raise up a church that would be intentional in its love for God and for people. I am so thankful for you and for the privilege of being the pastor of Terrace Lake for the last nearly 13 years. In that time, we have seen God work in powerful ways. We have experienced people putting their faith in Christ. We have seen people proclaim their belief in Jesus through baptism. We have wept together in death. We have prayed for healing. We have celebrated new life. And we have helped people become passionate disciples of Jesus Christ. God has blessed us at Terrace Lake, and He is not done. He is moving here, and He is calling us to follow him! God has directed us to live intentionally in Christ and make disciples who make disciples. He has called us to do all that we can to see people put their faith in Jesus and to live wholly for Him. We have no desire to see people complacent in their faith in God. We want to see God change Columbus and the world through the people of Terrace Lake. That is why we are beginning a two-year generosity initiative called MOVE>. For the next two years, we are going to do everything we can to bring life to the vision that we believe God has for Terrace Lake. It will not be easy. There will be times when we will need to encourage each other to keep going. We will have to sacrifice time and resources in order to have a transforming impact on our world. It may be difficult, but I believe it will be worth it. As we see what God can do in us and through us, we will be amazed at our awesome God. Youll want to keep this booklet handy during the next 5 weeks. Join us every Sunday during the MOVE> series (or listen online if you cant), participate in the weekly discussions with a small group, and live expectantly as God prepares to work in our hearts in powerful ways. It is time for us to take the challenge to move together. If we remain silent, or if we sit back and wait, we will miss an opportunity with God. God will save. God will redeem. God will transform lives. Lets join Him in what He is doing. God has put us together to accomplish something that we cannot do alone. God has put us together to accomplish a great work for His Kingdom. Lets move and live sacrificially to see the good news of Jesus Christ go forward to the ends of the earth. Blessings,

In April, Terrace Lake launches . . .

There are so many needs all around us.

There are people who are lost, scared and hurting. They are struggling through financial difficulties. They have children who are hurting or possibly rebelling. They are struggling in their marriage, and they are considering divorce. Maybe they have heard about Jesus, but they dont know what it means to follow him. They grew up in church, but its never made a real difference in how they live because they never learned how to have an ever-growing RELATIONSHIP with God, how to be a true disciple. The most difficult part is that they dont want anyone to know. They dont know what it is like to walk through this life with people who care. They are alone, lost, confused and need hope. They have never experienced the love of Jesus, and they have no idea what theyre missing which is EVERYTHING. God has given Terrace Lake the mission of living intentionally in Christ to make disciples who make disciples... Helping people become passionate followers of Jesus Christ.

We have been still before the Lord for several years, praying about Gods direction and the next step for our church. The time is now.

We believe God is calling us to grow deep and wide in our ministry here at Terrace Lake, in our community and around the world.

Its time to . . .

Join us in this two-year effort to make an impact in our church, in Columbus and in our world as we . . .

Over the next two years, we want to support, expand and strengthen our current ministries, staff and structure, including Childrens Ministry, Youth Ministry, Adult Discipleship, Worship Arts and Hospitality.

We dont want to do business as usual we are praying that MOVE> will enable us to grow and expand these ministries in exciting ways!
We asked our ministry leaders and teams to pray and dream about how God is leading them to impact Terrace Lake through their ministries during the next two years. The following pages contain excerpts from their responses:

MOVE BEYOND OUR WALLS - $1 .1 MILLION

As we live out our vision of expanding the reach of Terrace Lake through our community, our desire is to MOVE BEYOND OUR WALLS to make room for more individuals and families to join us in ministry.
14

To do that, we want to renovate and expand our facility by 12,000 square feet. This will include 6,500 square feet of new and remodeled childrens education space, relieving the crowding and allowing room for growth in this vital mission field. We will create three additional larger classrooms in the West wing that will enable us to implement learning stations and use new kinds of curriculum that we have not had space for previously, as well as a larger area that will accommodate large group worship experiences for the kids and an indoor play area.

The expansion will provide additional parking areas and an enlarged entrance and foyer, enhancing our ability to offer an inviting environment for building relationships and fostering community life. We will have dedicated space for fellowship and more room for people in our community to plug in at Terrace Lake to experience life change and spiritual growth.

15

MOVE> is not about Terrace Lake and our needs and wants. Its about making Terrace Lake a better tool for the advancement of Gods kingdom, impacting lives for eternity here in Columbus and around the world. We want Terrace Lake to be a body of believers that shows so much care and compassion toward our community and our world that people would notice if we closed our doors. Through this initiative, we want to move in

more ways than ever before to leave safety for adventure, leave comfort for compassion and make disciples who make disciples. We want to enhance our service to our community, including compassion opportunities focused on local poverty alleviation, increasing our current support of local ministries and implementing outreach strategies at large community events. This

could include service days in Columbus or the surrounding areas where we join together to embrace the community with the love of Christ by sending teams to serve at Love Chapel, New Song or the Pregnancy Care Center. We could plan to attend community events and pass out free bottles of water or share Gods love in other simple, tangible ways.

MOVE BEYOND OUR WALLS

16

We want to encourage our small groups to live out their faith by serving together in Columbus, building relationships with each other and those we are ministering to by our service.

We want Columbus to be a different city because we live and worship here.

We also want to engage more fully with our current international ministry partners. One result of this could be a short term mission trip to Latin American Discipleship and Outreach (LADO) in Columbia and significantly increasing our financial support for that ministry. Additionally, we will be praying through opportunities to invest in new ministry partnerships as they arise. We need every person in our church to join with us in accepting the challenge to move where God leads and impact the community and the world around us with the love of Christ and the truth of His gospel.
17

ONE FUND

THE CHALLENGE

campaigns typically focus on funding special projects, but MOVE> is about something bigger. MOVE> is about responding to what God is doing in our church and in our hearts so that we can impact our community and the world for Christ. Some giving campaigns ask you to give a second gift over and above your usual giving for special initiatives, while continuing to contribute to the General Fund. This type of giving is potentially confusing to people who either dont have a baseline for their usual giving OR they arent able to celebrate their total giving in one single number. At Terrace Lake, we believe we are all on ONE MISSION: Living intentionally in Christ to make disciples who make disciples. Therefore we are asking our church body to contribute to ONE FUND for the next two years. The one fund will cover our mortgage and operating expenses, our Phase I building plans, our ministries, and our giving to local and world outreach. The MOVE> initiative is intended to raise the overall level of generosity at Terrace Lake, and our hope is that, once we have all discovered the joy of giving, ministry can expand out into the future.

MOVE> is a Generosity Initiative. Capital

We are asking you to go on a journey with God and with your family over the next several weeks. It is our hope that everyone in our church would be part of this initiative as God continues to grow us individually and as a church.

18

Here is what we are asking you to do

So, will you pray for Gods blessing on this initiative? Will you pray that God expands our desire to lead generous lives, that we might glorify Him? Pray for spiritual and financial impact beyond what we can imagine!

19

The Goal: $2 million | 2 years

Two Years
Terrace Lake has 12+ years of changed lives to celebrate. As we look ahead at ministry in the coming years, we believe God is calling us to a new chapter in the life of our church. It all starts with a two-year commitment to lay a foundation for where God is taking us as a body. The MOVE> challenge is for each one of us to sacrificially expand our generosity to reach $2 million in two years. Although we certainly believe two years is a realistic timeline to accomplish this goal, we also know that it will take a tremendous amount of sacrifice and commitment from everyone at Terrace Lake. Please be praying about your personal financial commitment and how you can expand your personal generosity so that together we can reach our goal.
20

To make MOVE> a reality, everyone at Terrace Lake will be challenged to participate and contribute in a way unlike any other time in the life of our church. While faithful giving can provide for Terrace Lakes operational needs, everyone will need to give sacrificially to fund the effort to move.
We would ask you to consider a few types of giving: Consider sacrifices that would allow you to move to a place of radical generosity in your life. Then, prayerfully make a two-year pledge of your total giving, which will include both your normal giving and your expanded generosity for MOVE>. If you have not given previously to Terrace Lake, we ask that you would prayerfully consider making MOVE> the time you start! We believe the church is the hope of the world, and that God has commanded us to give of our resources towards the work of His Kingdom. If you have questions about this, we would love to talk with you! Just send us an email through our website and someone will get in touch with you. Many of us may have the capacity to give from accumulated resources. These are blessings God provided for us in the past that could be used to give generously to His purposes and plans today. Stored resources could include a savings account, valuables, stocks or property to sell.

However you decide to participate, thank you for being part of the work God is doing at Terrace Lake!

Sermon Notes
During the five-week sermon series beginning April 7, well explore how and why God challenges us to move to trust and treasure Christ above all else. Each week our sermon text will consider the gospel and generosity from an important angle.

Please bring this book back with you each week to take notes in the space provided!

Personal & Small Group Study

Our small groups will meet weekly to further study each message and seek to apply Gods hearttransforming truth in our lives. We encourage you to go over the small group materials on your own before meeting with the group, in addition to meditating on the scriptures in your personal study time each day. As we study Gods word individually and together, we trust Him to move our hearts closer in alignment to His and change us to be more like Him!
If you arent currently in a small group, please feel free to join one of the groups meeting just for MOVE> on Wednesday nights at 6:30 PM at Terrace Lake. We would love for everyone to get connected and dig into this study together!

Move Beyond Ourselves

Week One: The Upside of Losing Ourselves
Date: April 7, 2013 Text: Matthew 16:21-26

> OVERVIEW
It can be difficult to believe that Jesus truly has our best interest in mind when he is telling us to pick up our crosses and willingly lose our lives. Exactly what is it that we gain by willingly following Christ in this manner?

26

Personal & Small Group Study

If you had the finances and ability to do what you wanted, where would you have your summer and winter homes?

Describe the kind of life we find by willingly losing our previous life to Jesus?

Read Matthew 16:21-26 Why do you think Jesus responded so strongly to Peter (see 4:1-11)?

The Christian way is different: harder, and easier. Christ says, Give me all. I dont want so much of your time and so much of your money and so much of your work: I want you. I have not come to torment your natural self, but to kill it Hand over the whole natural self, all the desires which you think innocent as well as the ones you think wickedthe whole outfit. I will give you a new self instead. In fact, I will give you Myself: my own will shall become yours.C.S. Lewis

What specifically do you think Jesus means when he says, come after me? Put a 3X5 card next to your bed or over your bathroom mirror that reads: To whom am I listening? or Whos in control? Use it to help you move into each day with a peaceful attitude of surrender.

Week One

Describe the kind of life we often attempt to save that according to Jesus we will definitely lose?

Week Two: Finding the Courage to be Happy
Date: April 14, 2013 Text: Galatians 2:20-21 (John 15:9-11)

> OVERVIEW
You have probably heard it said: God never promised happiness. But is that true? What does the Bible have to say about happiness? Could it be our tendency is to settle for too little happiness?

28

Personal & Small Group Study

Share the craziest risk you ever took (could be anything). What made you take the risk? Would you ever do it again? Why or Why not?

What is the scariest part of I no longer live to you? How has the Son of Gods love and sacrifice for you impacted your life of faith?

Paul founded the church of Galatia during his first missionary journey (Acts 13-14). After leaving, some Jewish Christians arrived who accused Paul of omitting key parts of the gospel. They were teaching the Christians in Galatia that they needed to submit themselves to Jewish laws and customs in order to be truly Christian. Although Paul was willing to be accommodating to Jewish customs, he vehemently opposed this as a requirement. The letter to the Galatians is a declaration that salvation is a free gift and can in no way be earned. Paul is exhorting the Galatians to take the risk of trusting Christ alone with everything in their lives. Read Galatians 2:20-21 How would you describe yourself when you set aside the grace of God?

Understanding the context of John 15, how would you have responded to Jesus claim that he wanted our joy to be made full? If you had the opportunity, what questions would you have asked related to his words?

What folly to fear to be too entirely Gods! It is to fear to be too happy. It is to fear to love Gods will in all things. It is to fear to have too much courage in the crosses which are inevitable, too much comfort in Gods love, and too much detachment from the passions which make us miserable.Francois Fenelon Fenelon notes that we have a fear of being too committed to God. It feels like too much of a risk, too much potential change to our lives. Ultimately he suggests we do not surrender these things because we are afraid to be too happy. Though it sounds strange, this fear is a reality for many. Add the following question to the 3X5 card next to your bed or on your bathroom mirror: Why am I afraid to be happy?

Week Two

For those who are Christians, what part of you would you say no longer lives? What else needs to die?

Week Three: The Great Treasure Search
Date: April 21, 2013 Text: Matt. 13:45-46 (Matt. 22:37-39)

> OVERVIEW
Lets face it, the things Jesus teaches us to value and invest in just look weird compared to the worlds investments. The worlds investments are tangible, measurable and immediate. Investments in the kingdom of heaven appear to be very much intangible. How do we reconcile these differing values, and what is the key to making the best investment?

Which is more likely to be found in your storage: more trivia, trash or treasure? What is one thing others would count as trivia or trash that you consider a treasure?

What do you think heart, soul and mind specifically refer to in Matthew 22?

Read Matthew 13:45-46 Why do you think Jesus used parables in his teaching?

Describe how you think this love would specifically and practically change you.

How would you describe the merchants emotion and energy regarding the pearl? Does this teach us anything about ourselves and the kingdom of heaven?

The correct perspective is to see following Christ not only as the necessity it is, but as the fulfillment of the highest human possibilities and as life on the highest plane. Dallas Willard

What things am I willing to count as loss for the kingdom of heaven? What things do I struggle to release?

Take time this week to meditate on how much you truly value the kingdom of heaven. Instead of focusing on what you must pay, focus on the high price you have been paying by keeping everything under your control.

Week Four: Kingdoms and Checkbooks
Date: April 28, 2013 Text: Matt. 6:25-34 (2 Cor. 8:1-9)

> OVERVIEW
I admit when people have wanted to inject themselves into my personal finances my first response is to put up a wall. It just feels intrusive. If you did a survey of what Jesus talked about most, you would find he had no problem intruding into our personal finances. I guess thats legitimate with him being God and owning it all. So, how should we respond if Jesus wants to know what we are doing with his stuff?

What do you think Jesus means when he says, But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness?

Jesus speaks to the question of economics more than any other single social issue. If, in a comparatively simple society, our Lord lays such strong emphasis upon the spiritual dangers of wealth, how much more should we who live in a highly affluent culture take seriously the economic question.Richard Foster The following list is a sampling of Jesus teaching on material wealth. Read one of the five passages each day for the next five days. Keep the passage on the forefront of your mind throughout your day and ask the Lord to give you direction with regard to your life focus and material wealth: Matthew 19:16-22; Matthew 6:19, 21; Matthew 19:16-22; Luke 12:15; Luke 12:16-21

If you were to take this scripture passage seriously, how would it affect your list above?

Week Five: The Mission
Date: May 5, 2013 Text: Matt. 28:18-20 (2 Tim. 2:1-2)

> OVERVIEW
I dont know that most Christians make a connection between hearing the words, Well done, good and faithful servant, and fulfilling Jesus commission to all of us to make disciples. How do we know if we are fulfilling the mission Jesus saved us for?

34

Personal & Small Group Study

How do you normally respond to someone exercising authority? What makes it easier for you to respond to authority? Harder?

Look back over the previous lessons in this study. What aspects of the other lessons do you think are essential for the success of Jesus commission?

Read Matthew 28:18-20 Why do you think Jesus began this command by telling them All authority on heaven and on earth has been given to me? Has this series changed you or your thinking? How will this impact how you live from this point forward?

What do you think are the key priorities of Jesus commission?

When you consider everything weve studied in the past five weeks, what does Jesus final sentence mean to you?

Read 2 Timothy 2:2. Consider this passage in light of Matthew 28. According to Paul, how could we measure if we are succeeding at our mission?

As a group please take time to pray specifically for the MOVE> initiative. Begin with a time of being quiet before the Lord and listen for His Spirit to lead you in how you ought to pray (3-5 minutes), taking into consideration the emphasis over the last five weeks. Voice your prayers as you feel led in conversational prayer.
