Jumpers are the hardworkingest frock in a toddlers wardrobe! This lined jumper is a mere three pattern pieces. It has a broad, A-line shape and button or snap closure at the straps. Easy FABRICS Shell: Anything that isnt stretchy. Lighter denim, narrow-wale corduroy, wool-like blends, etc. Keep in mind: youre sewing for a child. Go for washability. Vintage, doubleknit polyester would be super cool, as would a thicker lace or eyelet. Lining: Again, washability. Try a lightweight cotton or nylon (not rayon) lining fabric. Think about a cute contrasting color or print. Matchings for nerds. O ne y ar d o f eac h is p le nty. MATERIALS Four snaps (such as hammered or pearl) or four buttons, ! or smaller.
LAYOUT and CUTTING All pieces are cut on the fold, so bring both selvedge edges together as shown to create two fold edges. Cut each piece from shell fabric and then cut them from the lining fabric. Note that the bottom edge of the lining is shorter than the shell. lining shell
1) MAKE THE SHELL Use the pieces youve cut from the shell fabric. With right sides together, stitch the bodice front (A) to skirt front (B) along the waistline. Remember, this pattern has just a 1/2 seam allowance throughout. Press the seam up towards neck. With right sides together, stitch sideseams and press them open. Do the hem now. Turn the bottom edge under ! and press. Then turn it under again and stitch. Leave the shell inside out. 2) ATTACH THE LINING Use the pieces youve cut from lining fabric and follow the directions in 1) above. Turn the lining so it is right side out and slip it into the shell, matching up the neck and armholes. The shell and lining should be right sides together. Stitch the neck, armholes and straps. And let me remind you again about the seam allowance. Trim the seam and clip the curves. Turn the lining back into the jumper and press. 3) PUT THE CLOSURES ON Apply the snaps according to directions on the package. Place the top snaps on the exterior of the bodice back, and the bottom snaps on the bodice front. If youve chosen buttons, sew the buttons on the bodice front and make the button holes on the bodice back.
* This pattern will work for a baby as young at 18 months. Just cut an additional inch from the bottom and try it on her before positioning the shoulder snaps.
