STUDENT SENATE BILL 2013-XXXX TITLE: Resolution Supporting United States House Resolution 850, The Nuclear Iran

Prevention Act of 2013 AUTHORS: Senator Sydney Kaplan, Former Senator Shelley Greenspan, Former Senator Nicole Krassner, Former Senator Taylor Parker, Daniel Milstein, Matt Scheer SPONSORS: Student Body President TJ Villamil, Student Body President-Elect Christina Bonarrigo, Senate President Pro-Tempore Cory Yeffet, Chairman Dylan Fisher, Chairman Joey Michaels, Chairman Elliot Grasso, Senator Josh Comiter, Senator Leah Miller, Senator Hanne Staertzel, Senator Megan Huynh, Senator Kelly Anne Vidal, Senator Davis Bean, Senator Abe Carryl, Senator Nancy Nguyen, Senator Elizabeth Chauncey WHEREAS, according to the U.S. Department of State in its most recent Country Report on Terrorism, Iran is an active state sponsor of terrorism that repeatedly provided support for acts of international terrorism, funding and arming terrorist groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah, in direct violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701; and WHEREAS, if the Iranian regime achieves a nuclear weapons capability, it would present an existential threat to the United States and to the rest of the world; and WHEREAS, a nuclear Iran would lead to a increased tensions in the already-volatile Middle East, threaten the lives of U.S. soldiers, and increase oil prices; and WHEREAS, a nuclear Iran, as an active state sponsor of terrorism, would embolden internationally recognized terrorist organizations that already have Irans backing and simultaneously increase Irans international influence; and WHEREAS, the United States has continuously condemned Irans pursuit of a nuclear weapons program; and WHEREAS, despite previous sanctions by the United States, the European Union, and the United Nations, as illustrated by the U.S. Department of Treasury, the European Commission, and the U.N. Security Council, Iran continues its pursuit of weapons-grade uranium; and WHEREAS, Iran continues to commit human rights violations against its own people, despite previous pressure placed on the Iranian regime by the international community; and WHEREAS, for the aforementioned reasons, the stringent enforcement of sanctions and the passage of the Nuclear Iran Prevention Act of 2013 (H.R. 850) is critical; and WHEREAS, the Nuclear Iran Prevention Act of 2013 is vital legislation that will soon be up for a vote in the United States House of Representatives; and

WHEREAS, this legislation has bipartisan support within Congress, as is demonstrated by the resolutions authors, House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce (R-CA) and Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Eliot Engel (D-NY); and WHEREAS, the Nuclear Iran Prevention Act of 2013 would strengthen the enforcement of current U.S. sanctions against Iran, expand sanctions targeting Irans human rights violations, and, for the first time, specifically authorize the president to impose sanctions on any entity that maintains significant commercial ties to Iran; and WHEREAS, the bill aims to maximize American economic and diplomatic efforts to prevent Iran from achieving a nuclear weapons capability; THEREFORE, LET IT BE RESOLVED that the students of the University of Florida urge members of the United States House of Representatives to co-sponsor and vote in favor of the Nuclear Iran Prevention Act of 2013; LET IT BE FINALLY RESOLVED that the students of the University of Florida stand in solidarity with their peers in Iran as they protest the current regimes pursuit of a nuclear weapons program to the detriment of Iranian society.
