Spring Bling April 18
Area ladies are invited out on the town for a special event entitled "Spring Bling...A 70's Thing." The outing, set for Thursday, April 18 from Noon to 9 p.m., will feature 14 West Bend area shops, seven restaurants and two salons. Shoppers can begin at any of the participating businesses and enjoy free trolley rides to the other locations from 3 p.m. until 9 p.m. The 2013 edition of Spring Bling has a 70's theme. Anyone dressing in 70's attire will receive an extra door prize ticket at the Welcome Center, which is located in the River Shores lobby. Each store will be offering specials and activities, and most will be serving hors d'oeuvres and appetizers. "Everybody will have something different going on," said Frank Smith, owner of Ruth-Anne's Gourmet Market, one of

Little Ten announces all-conference basketball teams

Slinger placed four players on the Wisconsin Little Ten all-conference boys basketball teams. Nathan Roethle was named to the first team, Derek Merkes and Tanner Schieve were named to the second team while Jakob Anderson received an honorable mention. The one other Washington County player to be selected was West Bend East's Dylan Gaspardo, who was named to the second team. On the girls side, West's Kayla Clark was named to the Wisconsin Little Ten Conference first team, Sara Spuhler of Hartford and Kiley Sabin of Slinger were named to the second team while Kayla Krassman of Hartford, Ashley Freeman of Slinger and Hannah Knop of West Bend East received honorable mention recognitions.

Creating a landscaping path

By Tresa Erickson Many landscapes feature paths of some sort that guide visitors from one point to another safely and easily. The best paths not only direct but connect visitors with the garden, leading them from one interesting point to another. If you would like to connect visitors to your landscape through some paths, here are some tips. Plot your path Determine beforehand the intent of the path: to direct visitors to and from the house, to allow visitors easy access to the garden, to highlight a particular feature, etc. Primary paths need to be wide and fairly straight to permit more than one visitor on them at a time. Secondary paths may be narrower and involve more twists and turns. Pick your materials Again, the purpose of the path plays a large part in the materials used. Primary paths should be made from materials that can be set firmly in place and provide an even surface, such as stone or brick. Secondary paths can call for softer surfaces like turf or mulches. You can mix materials for interest if you wish. Just make sure whatever you choose complements your landscape. Classic red brick might look out of place in a rustic garden, whereas stone and mulch might not. Prep and place the materials You cant just throw down some stepping stones and be done with it. The surface needs to be even, safe and easy to walk on, so prep the site accordingly. Improve the drainage, level the course with sand and then lay the material. Research the materials you plan to use and know how to install them properly. Take additional measures for stability, like creating edges to keep pavers, stones and brick in place. Consider installing lighting, particularly if the path will be used at night. Perk up the path When you have finished setting down the path, try it out. See for yourself how easy it is to traverse. Make whatever adjustments are needed for safety and then look at the path from a designer viewpoint. Is it eye catching? Does it capture and maintain your interest? Perhaps you could add to the ambiance with more lighting, plants and statuary. Garden paths can be great assets to your landscape. Think about yours carefully and make sure they fulfill their purpose and more.

Choices for the long haul

By Tresa Erickson Your toddler is growing up quickly, and before you know it, they will be in grade school and done with that race-car or princess bed. Here are some tips for transforming their room into one they can live in for a long time. It may be hard to imagine now, but eventually that little one dragging toys from one end of the house to another will be a teenager, and that teenager wont like the sweet striped wallpaper you selected for their bedroom. Better to get rid of that wallpaper and make choices now that will work for toddlers to teens. While wallpaper is nice, changing it out as your child grows can be a hassle. Paint is a better choice, especially for the younger years when messy hands are not uncommon. Removing dabs of chocolate pudding from a 24-HR EMERGENCY SERVICE painted wall is far easier than it is from a wallpapered wall. Trade the wallpaper for paint, and to reduce color changes over the years, choose a somewhat neutral shade that your child can live with for a long time, such as a mossy green, pewter gray or golden caramel. Think neutral for all other aspects of the room, in particular the flooring and lighting. Forget the rose-colored carpeting and the pink and purple ceiling fan. Opt for beige carpeting and a black, white or wooden ceiling fan instead. You can bring color and character into the room with fabrics and accessories that can easily be changed out. Continue the neutral backdrop with the window coverings and linens. White or wooden blinds will grow with your child, as will solid-colored sheets and bedding. Your child may have a favorite cartoon character or color, and you can honor that in the valances, pillows, throws and duvet covers. Keep the sheets and bed ruffle khaki and pump up the color with a camouflagethemed duvet color and dark green pillows and window valances. Get rid of the race-car or princess bed and any other furniture that wont stand the test of time. Look for sturdy, multi-functional pieces that will appeal to your child now and later. Bunk beds are great for young kids who like to have sleepovers and can be separated later for older kids. The same goes for that modular cube storage unit. You can stack the cubes one way when your child is young and another way when they are older. As for furniture color, neutral is the best choice, be careful with white furniture, as it doesnt always appeal to teen girls. Accessories can easily be changed out, so rely on them to add color and character to your childs room. Do keep in mind, however, how often kids tastes change, so dont spend a fortune on the accessories for your childs room. Shop for items at flea markets, yard sales and clearance sales. Choose inexpensive posters, prints and calendar pages you can frame rather than custom-framed artwork. Hang a bulletin board for handiwork and add some wallpaper stickups to furniture and walls for pops of color. Decorating your childs room for the long haul is not hard. It just takes some thought of today and tomorrow. Good luck, and dont forget to get the input of your most important critic, your child. It is their room after all. Give them a say in how it looks, and you may not have to badger them as much later to keep their room clean!

Greener and safer choices

By Tresa Erickson With an increasing emphasis on preserving the earth, more people than are ever are going green, and paint and stain companies are stepping up to the plate with greener choices. Shop for eco-friendlier paint and stain, and youll find endless choices, some of them better than others. If you are thinking about painting or staining something in your home and want to go green, here are some tips. Know the culprits. Traditional paint contains a lot of toxic chemicals, most notably volatile organic compounds or VOCs. VOCs pollute the air and can cause nausea, dizziness, eye irritation, cancer and heart, lung and kidney damage. Traditional paint also contains fungicides and biocides, air pollutants that prevent mildew growth and extend the life of the paint. Traditional paint contains chemical pigments as well, another air pollutant. Traditional stain contains even more air pollutants than paint. When shopping for paint and stain, pay attention to the labels. Obviously the less VOCs, fungicides, biocides and chemical pigments the product has, the better. The greenest choices in paint offer low VOCs, low fungicides and biocides and natural pigments. The greenest choices in stain are water based with no biocides or added dryers. Exterior paint generally contains more air pollutants than interior paint. All exterior paint contains fungicides to prevent mildew growth and biocides to extend the shelf life. While you wont find a low-biocide exterior paint, you can look for one with zinc oxide as the fungicide and low VOCs. Interior paint offers better greener options. Natural paints made from balsam, citrus, minerals and other sources are ideal, as is milk paint made from casein and lime. Latex paint featuring low biocides and low VOCs is also a good choice. Acrylic paint and recycled latex paint will also suffice, providing they have no mercury or lead. You can also make your own eco-friendly paint and stain. There are dozens of recipes online you can follow. The worst, and potentially the most dangerous, paint and stain are oil or solvent based. Avoid these when at all possible. Greener choices in paint and stain are available. Do your homework, and no matter what you select, make sure the area where you are working is well ventilated. And when its time to discard any leftover paint or stain, do so properly. Donate it or take it to a hazardous waste collection facility. Dont dump it in the trash, where it will make its way to the landfill and possibly pollute the groundwater.

Washington County to hold Clean Sweep collection May 11

Washington County will hold its next Full Service Clean Sweep Saturday, May 11, 8 a.m. to noon, at the Washington County Highway Facility, 900 Lang St., West Bend. This is an opportunity for county residents to properly dispose or recycle unwanted hazardous chemicals, electronic goods, pharmaceutical medication and used tires. There will be drive-through collection stations for convenience. A $10 pre-registration fee is required for the hazardous waste and electronic goods; participation is limited to 250 vehicles per event. Pre-registration is not required for the drug collection. The used tire collection is also unlimited; however, a maximum of 20 tires will be accepted per participant, and per tire disposal fees apply. To pre-register, one can download a form from www.co.washington.wi.us/cleansweep; stop in at the Land and Water Conservation Division, 333 E. Washington St., West Bend to submit cash or check; or by calling (262) 335-4808. The following items will not be accepted: television sets, appliances, latex paint, oil, batteries, needles/sharps; radioactive items; smoke detectors; cylinders; and gas grill propane tanks. Local salon owner lends services to cancer patients

A cancer survivor two times over, West Bend resident Barbara Justmanowner of BJ & Company, located at 446 S. Main Street in downtown West Benduses her personal story to be a mentor to others in need, but has a heart for people in general. I just like helping people, whether they be cancer patients or older people, or anyone, Justman said. Hairdressers are like bartenderswe listen to everyones problems. A graduate of the Adele Ballou Cosmetology and in the field for nearly 50 years, Justman is known as a trusted professional in cosmetology and wellness. While she has a special gift for making those going through cancer treatments feel beautiful, Justman offers her extensive services to everyone. BJ & Company offers the full line of beauty products and serviceshaircuts, coloring and styling; wigs, hair pieces and extensions; facials; body waxing; aromatherapy; body wraps; tanning; ear piercing; massages; manicures and pedicures and morehowever, the salons best asset is clearly its owner, who approaches every trial with a wry sense of humor. When diagnosed with colon cancer in 1998, she was running five minutes behind for an appointment with a client. I said, Sorry Im late, I just found out I have cancer, she recalled with a laugh. And when telling the story of how the beauty shop was gutted by a fire in 2009, Justman focuses on the positive, cheerfully explaining how a former employee offered the rental of part of her own building down the street until Justman could re-establish BJ & Company. The fire happened on Monday, we were open for business on Wednesday, said Justman. We didnt skip a beat. Aside from the business she has run since 1979, Justman also donates her aesthetic services to cancer patients, both as a trainer for theLook Good...Feel Better program for the past 22 years and, more recently, at the Small Stones Wellness Center located in the lobby of the Kraemer Cancer Center at Froedtert Health St. Josephs Hospital in West Bend. For Look Good, Feel Bettera free nationwide program for cancer patientsJustman trains other hairdressers in beauty options for women undergoing cancer treatment. We start out by putting makeup and wigs on the model and then everyone follows and does it on themselves, she said. It

starts out serious, but pretty soon everyone is having a great time. Justman volunteers two afternoons each week at Small Stones, a new addition to the community that is slowly but surely attracting interest, she said. We can shave heads there, we have some wigs on display and can order wigs, we have make up, she said. People are starting to peek inside and see what were all about. The wellness center also offers books focusing on inspiration, self-help and nutrition, meditation CDs and unique jewelry and gift items. "It makes everything easier, more accessible (for individuals dealing with cancer), she said. This is something Justman can appreciate as nine years after her colon cancer diagnosis, in 2009, for which she underwent chemotherapy, Justman found out she had breast cancer and had to go through radiation. Justman said her difficult experiencesboth personally and with many family members who have faced cancergive her a unique perspective in helping others going through the same struggle. I think people feel more comfortable with me, she said. You live through it and its such a pain, but then you can help people and give them hope. Justmanwho has been married to husband Homer for 47 yearsstays busy and involved in many other ways as well. She is the past chairman and director of the Wisconsin Hair Fashion Committee; has served 30-plus years as an Ambassador for the West Bend Area Chamber of Commerce; and has been a West Bend Rotarian for more than 25 years. But more than anything else she identifies herself as a people person. I like being with people, she said. I feel like I am uplifting to the clients. Were always laughing about something. Appointments at BJ & Company are appreciated, but not necessary. The salon is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to around 6 p.m. most days with shorter hours on Wednesdays and Saturdays. "Spring Bling" will include door prizes (with a door prize at each store), and sales received from a Diva "Bling" handmade soap-sold now through the event at all locations for $9-will benefit Chix 4 a Cause. "Basically a group of business owners gets together to make this happen," he said. This year it included soap-making at Century Farmhouse. Each business contributed an item to put into the soap, then helped to make and package bars. "It's a grassroots effort." This is the fourth time such an event has been held in the spring. A similar event called "Diva Night" is held yearly in the fall, this year on Thursday, September 12th. The response has always been excellent (for these events)," said Smith. "It has grown and more businesses have gotten involved and a lot of ladies always come out." "It's a good opportunity to go out, shop, have fun and a dinner with friends," he added.
