SLMS: Rachel Thompson TEACHER: Natalie King

Thompson 2 CONNECTION TO LOCAL OR STATE STANDARDS: SS3E1 The student will describe the four types of productive resources: d. Entrepreneurship (used to create goods and services) SS3E3 The student will give examples of interdependence and trade and will explain how voluntary exchange benefits both parties. a. Describe the interdependence of consumers and producers of goods and services. b. Describe how goods and services are allocated by price in the marketplace. c. Explain that some things are made locally, some elsewhere in the country, and some in other countries. OVERVIEW: Third grade students had been reading a collection of fiction and nonfiction stories dealing with the topic of economics during their reading class. The students most recently read a fictional story about the life of a dollar bill. They then proceeded to write their own narratives about a day in their life as a dollar bill. After learning about money and economics in both social studies and in reading, students were instructed to create their own business using the knowledge that they had obtained throughout the entire economics unit. FINAL PRODUCT: Working in pairs, students will effectively use Microsoft Word and/or Microsoft Paint to produce a business plan and an advertisement for their business. Students will use pictures to enhance the overall appearance of their advertisement. Students will also effectively use the units pathfinder for ideas and information: http://www.pageflakes.com/yesthelibraryrocks/ LIBRARY LESSON(S): Students will participate in a lesson that teaches them how to effectively use Microsoft Word and Paint. They will be shown how to use the various tools available in each program. They will then choose the program that they prefer and will be given time to explore and discover all it has to offer before completing their assignment. ASSESSMENT: Product: 1) The teacher and the SLMS will use a rubric (attached) to assess the students final product of a business plan and advertisement. Process: 1) The teacher and SLMS will use the attached rubric to assess student success. 2) The teacher and SLMS will observe to see if the students are able to utilize all of the discussed tools available in Word and/or Paint. Student self-questioning: - Which program should I use? - Will my advertisement catch the customers attention? - Did I follow directions on how to insert pictures into my document? - Did I include all of the components of the project (the advertisement and business plan)?

Thompson 3 Did I ask for help when I needed it?

INSTRUCTIONAL PLAN Resources students will use: Online subscription database(s) Web sites Books Reference Nonprint Periodicals/newspapers Other (list): Microsoft Word and/or Paint and Business Plan Template (attached)

Instruction/activities: Direct instruction: Students will review what they have been learning in social studies and reading in regards to money and economics. The SLMS will then describe all of the components that are involved in the business project. Modeling and guided practice: Students will then be taken to the computer lab where the students will be introduced to the project pathfinder space. Because all students will have access to a computer at this time, they will follow along on their own computer as the SLMS helps them explore the wiki. The SLMS will also show the students how to access all that Microsoft Word and Paint have to offer at this time. She will show the students how to enter in ClipArt, create WordArt, and change the font size and type in Word. She will then show the students how to use the tools in Paint. She will also show the students the Business Plan Template. Independent practice: The students will have the opportunity to create their own advertisement using the techniques the SLMS taught them. They will also have access to the pathfinder at all times while in the computer lab. The teacher and SLMS will rotate throughout the computer lab to assist in any problems that may arise. Many students need help reading the material on the wiki because of their reading levels. Sharing and reflecting: Students will be encouraged to share with other groups what they discovered during this project. They will also be given a chance to complete an survey on how well their group worked together, what they liked as well as what they didnt like about the assignment.

Reflection of lesson and collaboration: Collaboration was somewhat easy for this assignment. I work right next door to the teacher in which I collaborated with. I knew what the students were learning because Ms. King and I often talk together after school. Time is always an issue, but we were able to fit in our collaboration during our similar planning time. I can see how this might

Thompson 4 be a challenge for working with those teachers who do not have the same time as you to plan. We were able to quickly decide what would be an appropriate assignment for the students. The students did really well with this assignment. They tried really hard to do their best and were very creative with their choices of businesses. In partnering the students up, we allowed them to pick their own partners. Most of them picked other students that they normally wouldnt work with (they were encouraged to pick someone that was a hard worker and someone they wouldnt get into trouble with). I was worried at first because I was afraid one student would be doing all of the work while the other took a break. This was not the case. Both students in ALL partnerships worked very hard to get the job done. All student partnerships turned in their assignments on time and complete. This is rare! I believe that the students really enjoyed the process of creating their own businesses, especially making the advertisements. I was asked more than once if they would be allowed to use ClipArt, WordArt, etc. for other projects in the future. They were really excited when I told them yes! My only wish for this project was that we had more time to complete it. It was very difficult to get a time in the already booked for two months computer lab, so we were stuck with whatever small time frames were left. We made it work, but it seemed like the students felt they were rushed. I know I felt like I was going nonstop!
