Gods glory through Holy Week and Easter...Gods glory every week
Ive been wring and preaching a lot recently about Gods glory. Simply put, Glory is Gods manifest presence. Theres a dierence between Gods omnipresence and Gods manifest presence. Omnipresence is the truth that God is everywhere all the me. Manifest presence is when God makes his presence known beyond doubt. James McDonald puts it like this, Glory is the supernatural signature where God has been at work. (Vercal Church, 83) Omnipresence will not sustain us, but glory will! Gods glory was seen at Tyler Street throughout Holy Week and on Easter. Starng with Palm Sunday, I observed worshippers moved by Gods Spirit. Children, youth and adults gave glory, praise and honor to God. In response, God revealed His glory. On Maundy Thursday three members of our church shared what Jesus means to them. Each gave a powerful witness of Gods manifest presence in their lives. Each bore witness to Gods sustaining and life giving presence. One of the speakers was a young female. With transparency and courage she spoke of her own personal struggles, and how Jesus was rescuing her. Good Friday brought us to the cross. The choir ushered us into Gods presence as we reected on Jesus seless and sacricial love. He Ed Lantz was not a vicm of circumSenior Pastor stance. Out of love for us, he chose the cross. We le that evening silently, but not silently sad. Rather, we le silently convicted; silently inspired; silently passionate about serving The Lamb. Easter Sunday morning began with glory. About ninety people from dierent congregaons in Oak Cli gathered on our lawn for a sunrise worship service. Leaders from the congregaons led in the service, and our own Pastor Cheryl preached a powerful, powerful message of resurrecon. One of the residents of Tyler Street Manor heard something from her apartment and looked out. When she saw the sunrise worship, she opened her window and worshipped with us from an upper

oor. Glory came down in the sanctuary, too. The Lord drew many people to Tyler Street and we experienced Gods presence. One of the most powerful ways came through the tesmony of people coming forward. Two adults joined by Profession of Faith (one as bapzed; the other armed her bapsm), two children were bapzed and another adult joined the church. As McDonald rightly points out, glory is Gods singular provision. It is what God gives to sasfy the longing in every human soul. (Vercal Church, 65) God has placed a longing for Him within every human heart. Ecclesiastes 3:11a says, He has put eternity into mans heart. As a church, our passion is not, What do people want? or What do people like? Our consuming passion must be to give people what they need. Our consuming passion is to encounter (and help others encounter) the glory of God; Gods manifest presence. Why? Because that is the longing of all our hearts. How do we do it? Four ways: Unashamed Adoraon. Unapologec Preaching. Unafraid Witness. Unceasing Prayer. More on these later. Im so grateful to serve our King with you at Tyler Street. In our sanctuary, we have a mailbox where we keep encouragement cards. If someone is on your mind, drop by the mailbox and write that person an encouraging message. Write the name of the person on the card and we will mail it for you. If they are not a member, please also include their address.

Welcome our new members...

Season of Storms?
There was a young lady who was driving along with her father. They came upon a storm, and the young lady asked her father, What should I do? He said, Keep driving. Even as the storm grew worse and cars began pulling over to the side of the road her father told her, Keep driving. Shortly she noced that 18-wheelers were also pulling over. She told her dad, I must pull over, I can barely see ahead. It is terrible, and everyone is pulling over! Her father told her, Dont give up, just keep driving! As the storm intensied, she never stopped driving, and soon she could see a lile more clearly. Soon she was again on dry land, and the sun came out. Her father said, Now you can pull over and get out. She asked, But why now? He said, Because now that you are through the storm, you can get out and see the view you can look back and see all the people who gave up and are sll mired in the storm. (Anonymous) Life can be like our ever changing Texas weather in the spring windy and shaky, cold and dreary, sunny and bright or even quiet and sll. It is the uncertainty and fearfulness of storms that really shakes our foundaon and makes us anxious. However, the Word of God encourages us to press on even in the face of the storms. Paul says in Philippians 3:12, "Not that I have already aained or I'm already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has already laid hold of me." When I feel discouraged, I remind myself to look beyond the obstacles and keep pressing on towards my goal. There are many scriptures that encourage us to press on. John 14:1 says, Jesus said, Dont let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and

trust in me. I admit that it is a challenge not to worry. Somemes when we look at our situaons there does not seem to be a way out. We have to be reminded that we are looking with our eyes and not calculang Gods power through us.

Tyler Street celebrated 101st Anniversary

During morning worship, we honored the rst one hundred members in connuous membership. LaVerne Vogel (le) and Alice Hargis (right) were among those honored. Congratulaons!

2nd Corinthians 4:8-9 says, "We have troubles all around us, but we are not defeated. We do not know what to do, but we do not give up the hope of living. We are persecuted, but God does not leave us. We are hurt somemes, but we are not destroyed." Anyone who has pursued anything may be able to relate to this scripture. Somemes we may accomplish our goal on the rst aempt. Somemes success does not come easy. This scripture tells us not to give up. It reminds us that although others may leave us or not believe in us God never will. Hebrews 10:35 - 36 says, "So do not lose the courage you had in the past, which has great reward. You must hold on, so you can do what God wants and receive what He has promised." Somemes, when we start out our journey we are excited and have fresh energy. er a child, teenager or an adult we may face this issue. In spite of things that block our path ask the Holy Spirit to give you strength to run on. Yes, you may be in a storm now. There may even be a lile storm in the forecast (as a looming deadline or an impending lay-o). But the same Jesus who stood up in a boat during a turbulent storm and said, Peace connues to be present in the midst of our storms. In the shadow of Resurrecon Sunday let us be reminded that because Christ arose we have a reason for hope during our season of storms.

Our newest ministry, Connect to the Kingdom (C2K), which is housed in Benne Hall, hosted three groups from across the country this March. We welcomed Grand Valley State University from Michigan, Oklahoma City University and New Mexico State University. Through this ministry, two houses in Dallas received much needed repair, children were ministered to at Elmwood UMC through Project Transformaon, Legacy Coage received clean-up/organizing help, and CitySquare, a family clinic near Fair Park, got their community garden ready for Spring. It is an excing me to be a part of Tyler Street and its ministries. Glory to God for a Spirit-lled Holy Week!

By Keum Hwang Holy Week started with Palm Sunday; a celebraon of Jesus coming into town to claim what is righully His, so the people thought as they cheered His name and proclaimed, Hosanna! Hosanna! As the week progressed we witnessed modern day disciples giving their tesmony during Maundy Thursday Service; Gaby Garcia, Pat Whiteley, Leon McWhorter and Rev. Cheryl Jones with her homily. Good Friday, the Sanctuary choir and instrumentalists performed a cantata wrien by Mark Hayes that took the worshippers through Jesus day by day highlights, unl that day when He was taken to be sacriced on the wondrous cross carrying all of our sin. Pastor Ed with such passion preached about the Son of God being sacriced but to look forward to that day when He defeated death! What a whirlwind of Spirit lled week!!!! Words fail to describe the awesomeness of God as He changes lives and how we can experience the Spirit in worship. Thank you to all those who dedicated hours and hours of prayer, rehearsal, and pracce to glorify God. Most of all let us li up God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit who guided us through dicult mes and readied the hearts of all worshippers. An interview with Kathy Benne

sister who was recovering from typhoid along with her two-year-old child aer having been hospitalized, unable to work and now burdened with medical bills. Our Project Hope parcipant is a cheerful giver.

What are some of the goals?

One mother has said she wants to learn English well enough to take the cizenship test and to read her Bible. Other families might need someone to help them set a budget and sck to it.

What is Project Hope?

Project Hope is a program to help families interested in breaking the cycle of poverty and living a balanced, stable life. Tyler Streets Project Hope team takes a willing family and, aer examining the areas of family, budget, career, educaon, health, faith and personal issues, develops a plan to improve the family members lives in these areas. We start by pairing the family with a spiritual coach and a budget coach. Once the family agrees to specic goals, the adults and coaches enter a covenant to work together in reaching the goals.

High school graduaon or college admission might be a goal. Currently, Jim Bayless is helping a young man who is a senior at Sunset High School and needs to pass the math poron of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test to graduate. The young man has already improved his physics grade from a 45 to an 80 in just a few weeks. He aributes this to Jim being able to explain the subject in a way that makes more sense to him. Aer being in the program, one woman said she is so happy to know that she is not alone and that God sent us to her to help. A man new to the program has said he welcomes the spiritual support as he faces family and economic problems. Some families have problems that do not have quick xes and will take a lot of perseverance to overcome. They look to us to be their encouragers. Somemes, when faced with challenges, the relaonships we develop with one another can provide the most help. We started with our rst family in August 2012. We have now added another.

What are these families like?

They believe in God, want changes in their lives and are willing to work for change. When we began to assess our rst familys needs, we found a woman trying to raise her three children alone on minimum wage. She had worked at the same job for over two years. She had no debt despite her low wages and family needs so discipline was clearly not her challenge. Her budget coach, Garry Wolford, helped her see that what she needed was more income. This woman shared how her son had needed expensive dental work in the past and so she charged the rst $250 on a charge card so the denst would begin. The total bill was $4000. She made tamales and sold them unl she paid o the bill. That is 400 dozen tamales! Aer beginning the program, one night she came to our weekly meeng excited to tell us she had a praise report. She was given a $100 bonus at work so she quickly sent it to her
