ASSIGNMENT ON CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) INITIATIVES OF THREE COMPANIES

1. INFOSYS
Infosys employees actively participate in the welfare of the local community. Our Development Centers (DCs) in India make a difference through several Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. Our employees organize and contribute to welfare programs, especially for underprivileged children. We support the activities of institutes and Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) dedicated to healthcare and education, and campaigns for skills development and community welfare. CSR activities at Infosys BANGLORE Rakum School for the visually challenged: Mitr, our local CSR team, visited the Rakum School for the visually challenged. Mobility, an exercise in which team members walked blindfolded using canes, helped them empathize with the children. The team organized games and distributed chocolates and stationery. Notebook distribution: The Infynite Smiles CSR team has been distributing books and stationery to underprivileged children across Karnataka since 2001. In 2009, the team touched more than 45,000 lives, including the tribal community. We collected donations amounting to Rs. 10,00,000. Our drive has been actively supported by the Dream School Foundation, Ramana Clinic, Sri Vivekananda Youth Movement, Chrysalis and other NGOs BHUBNESWAR Project Genesis: This initiative of the Infosys Affirmative Action Program (IAAP) prepares students for a career in the Business Process Outsourcing industry. The project was launched in Orissa in 2007 along with the state government to enhance the skills of academicians. Till date, 515 professors have been trained to make learning more focused by combining traditional teaching methods with modern education. In 2009, 70 professors underwent a 12-day training program.

CHANDIGARH Behavior and social skills development: Prayaas, our local CSR team, organized a program where 60 children from the Panchkula slum showcased their creativity in group activities. The children were imparted training in social etiquette. Medical camp and cleanliness drive: Prayaas has adopted Tanda village to drive social transformation in the region. Our volunteers engaged residents in a cleanliness drive to prevent malaria. A free camp for eye and general medical checkup was organized. Medicines and spectacles prescribed by doctors at the camp were distributed free of cost. The team collected data on health and sanitation related issues to address them.

CHENNAI Educare: Sneham, our local CSR team, manages a dedicated intranet portal to help employees support education of the children of our housekeeping and security staff. In 2009, 1,500 members contributed approximately Rs. 14,00,000 to support more than 370 students. Meritorious students were awarded for their performance. A special award was presented to a girl child with exceptional recitation skills. Helping the visually challenged: Infoscions partner with Nethrodaya, an NGO that works with visually challenged children. Our volunteers regularly conduct weekend reading sessions. In 2009, we organized a South India inter-state sports festival with modified versions of cricket, volleyball and chess. Facilities for rural schools: Volunteers constructed a water tank to supply drinking water to 1,000 students of the Avanippoor Government Higher Secondary School. We have been donating notebooks to the Anoor School since 2005. In 2009, we donated a water tank to the school. We also distributed notebooks to the children of Infosys support staff.

HYDERABAD

PC donation drive: Mamata, our local CSR team, donated more than 105 PCs to institutions that undertake non-commercial and public activities. We have already invited requests for the next list of beneficiaries. Day of Change: Every Wednesday, drop boxes are placed at the campus entrance and exit points, food courts and parking area to collect coins from Infoscions for social welfare activities.

MYSORE

Notebook distribution: Soften, our local CSR team, distributed 57,000 books, 36,000 pencils and 3,600 erasers in the Notebook Distribution Drive 2009. Underprivileged students from various schools have been benefiting from this drive since 2002. Language and computer education: Basic computer education was imparted to the security and housekeeping staff of the DC. Our team also helped 10 guards improve their English language skills. Summer camp: A month-long workshop was conducted in May 2009 at Karunya Mane, a child rehabilitation center. 30 children were taught art and craft, dance, Math, English, environment awareness, traffic rules, health and fitness, and social etiquette. Quiz contests helped the children assess their general knowledge. Blood donation: More than 80 Infoscions donated blood in a special camp conducted in collaboration with the Mysore Rotary and Chandrakala Hospital. School for dropouts: Our team works with Kaliyuva Mane, an informal school for dropouts run by the Divya Deepa Trust. We interact with children in open classrooms through painting competitions and games.

PUNE

Sparsh - A Healing Touch, our local CSR team, is a registered NGO. In 2009, we conducted several programs: Eye donation camp: More than 330 Infoscions pledged to donate their eyes in a special camp organized with the Ruby Hall Clinic and Eye Bank Association of India. Play and Live (PAL): We use sports to boost the confidence of underprivileged children, teach them various skills and change their outlook. We donated sports equipment including carom and chess boards, and prizes such as watches, perfumes and chocolates. Blood donation camp: 700 volunteers donated blood during a two-day camp in June 2009. Three blood banks - ISIS Blood Bank, KEM and Janakalyan - participated. Doctors highlighted the need for safe blood donation at the camp.

THIRUVANANTPURAM

Notebook distribution: Infosys CEO and Managing Director Kris Gopalakrishnan inaugurated a notebook distribution drive, which benefited 4,000 students in 2009.

2. INDIAN OIL
"CSR: A Cornerstone of our Enduring Success" At IndianOil, corporate social responsibility (CSR) has been the cornerstone of success right from inception in the year 1964. The Corporations objectives in this key performance area are enshrined in its Mission statement: "to help enrich the quality of life of the community and preserve ecological balance and heritage through a strong environment conscience." We at IndianOil have defined a set of core values for ourselves Care, Innovation, Passion and Trust to guide us in all we do. We take pride in being able to claim almost all our countrymen as our customers. Thats why, we coined the phrase, IndianOil India Inspired", in our corporate campaigns. Public corporations like IndianOil are essentially organs of society deploying significant public resources. We, therefore, are aware of the need to work beyond financial considerations and put in that little extra to ensure that we are perceived not just as corporate behemoths that exist for profits, but as wholesome entities created for the good of the society and for improving the quality of life of the communities we serve.

As a constructive partner in the communities in which it operates, IndianOil has been taking concrete action to realise its social responsibility objectives, thereby building value for its shareholders and customers. The Corporation respects human rights, values its employees, and invests in innovative technologies and solutions for sustainable energy flow and economic growth. In the past five decades, IndianOil has supported innumerable social and community initiatives in India. Touching the lives of millions of people positively by supporting environmental and health-care projects and social, cultural and educational programmes.

Besides focusing primarily on the welfare of economically and socially deprived sections of society, IndianOil also aims at developing techno-economically viable and environmentfriendly products & services for the benefit of millions of its consumers, while at the same time ensuring the highest standards of safety and environment.

Sharing Profits

Every year, IndianOil sets aside a fixed portion of its profits for spreading smiles in millions of lives across the country through a comprehensive community welfare and development programme. About one-fourth of the community development funds are spent on the welfare of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe beneficiaries.

IndianOil has a concerted social responsibility programme to partner communities in health, family welfare, education, environment protection, providing potable water, sanitation, and empowerment of women and other marginalized groups. Indian Oil has always been in the forefront in times of national emergencies. Indian Oil People have time and again rallied to help victims of natural calamities, maintaining uninterrupted supply of petroleum products and contributing to relief and rehabilitation measures in cash and kind. Indian Oils community-focused initiatives include allotment of petrol/diesel station dealerships and LPG distributorships to beneficiaries from among Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, physically handicapped, ex-servicemen, war widows, etc. The Corporation has also unveiled kisan seva kendras as small-format retail outlets to reach quality products and services to people in the rural areas.

Community Development:

The

Programme

adopts

multi-disciplinary

approach

incorporating health, family welfare, education, drinking water and sanitation, empowerment of women and other marginalized groups in the vicinity of our major installations. While utilising the Community Development Funds, more emphasis is laid on the projects for providing Clean Drinking Water, Health & Medical Care and Education.

The activities undertaken under the above three thrust areas are as under: Providing Clean Drinking Water: Installation of hand pumps/bore well/tube wells/submersible pumps, construction of elevated water tanks, providing water tap connection, rainwater harvesting projects/kits, aquaguard water purifiers/water coolers to schools/community center etc. Health & Medical Care: Organising Medical/Health Camps on Family Planning, Immunization, AIDS awareness, Pulse Polio, Eye, Blood Donation, Pre and Postnatal Care, Homeopathic Medicine etc., distribution of free condoms, providing antimosquito fogging treatment, toilets, medicines to primary health centres, mosquito nets, ambulances to Medical Centres/Hospitals/NGOs, hearing aids/wheel chairs to physically challenged, financial assistance to hospitals, medical equipments etc.

Besides the above, IndianOil also runs and maintains the following for the benefit of the local community:

Hospital,

Raunchi

Bangar,

Mathura: IndianOil has set up a 50 bed Swarna Jayanti Samudaik Hospital, at village Raunchi Bangar, Mathura, Uttar Pradesh for providing medical assistance to the residents of the area. In addition, two mobile dispensaries have been set up by Mathura Refinery to provide primary medical care in the nearby villages of Mathura Refinery. The entire cost of operation and maintenance of hospital including operation of two mobile dispensaries is borne by the Corporation. The

hospital provides free treatment to destitute and offers subsidized treatment to others.

200 bed hospital set up by Assam Oil Division, IOCL at Digboi, Assam: IndianOil has set up and runs a 200 bed hospital at Digboi with ultramodern medical facilities for the benefit of the people of the area. The hospital doctors alongwith paramedical staff also visit the nearby villages for providing health care services to the villagers. The medical care services provided by the hospital are heavily subsidized.

Assam Oil School of Nursing, AOD, Digboi: Assam Oil School of Nursing, established in the year 1986, offers a three year diploma course in General Nursing and Midwifery, recognized by the Indian Nursing Council, where local girls are trained to be professional nurses. 20 Students per year are awarded Diploma by the Nursing School and till date over 294 girls have obtained diploma in Nursing and Midwifery courses. The entire cost of training is borne by the Corporation and the students are also paid a monthly stipend during their training.

IndianOil Rural Mobile HealthCare Scheme: IndianOil has identified the lack of medical services, especially availability of qualified doctors, as one of the major problems facing rural India. Most of the diseases prevalent in rural India can be treated through timely primary healthcare and basic awareness regarding prevention and treatment. In order to bridge this gap, IndianOil is planning to launch the IndianOil Rural Mobile HealthCare Scheme which would provide primary healthcare to the villages near the IndianOil Kisan Seva Kendras. Kisan Seva Kendra is an award-winning retail outlet model pioneered by IndianOil to cater to the needs of customers in the rural segment. Under the IndianOil Rural Mobile HealthCare Scheme, mobile medical units with a dedicated team of doctor, pharmacist, community worker and driver would travel amongst the villages near a Kisan Seva Kendra as per a fixed schedule providing primary healthcare to the local community. In the pilot phase, IndianOil intends to launch the scheme in parts of Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh, which would later be scaled up to other states as well.

construction/renovation/repair of hostels, school buildings, classrooms etc., computers to schools, books, furniture, laboratory equipment, awards to meritorious students, scholarships to poor students, adult literacy programme, delivery vans for distribution of mid-day meals to Govt. School children, sponsoring/organizing rural sports/games, sports meets/events, supporting education and research activities etc.

Indian Oil Scholarship Schemes:

IndianOil Educational Scholarship Schemes: IndianOil awards 2600 scholarships to meritorious students pursuing full-time courses in 10+/ITI, Engineering/Medical and Business Administration to nurture and support talent among the deserving students belonging to families with less than rupees one lakh as the gross joint annual income. Out of which 50% are reserved for SC/ST/OBC students, 25% of the Scholarship is earmarked for girl students and 10% for Physically Handicapped students. The whole Scheme for awarding Scholarships is meant for deserving extremely poor and downtrodden children.

IndianOil Scholarships Scheme for Graduate and Post-Graduate students: Under the scheme total 600 scholarships (300 for Engineering, 200 for MBBS and 100 for MBA) are awarded every year @Rs.3000/- per month for all the four years for Engineering and Medical Courses and two years for Business Administration/Management courses. IndianOil Merit Scholarships Scheme for 10+/ITI studies: Under the scheme total 2000 scholarships are awarded to students pursuing 10+ courses/ITI every year @ Rs.1000/- per month for two years. 400 scholarships out of 2000 are allocated to deserving students from the North Eastern states, Andaman & Nicobar Islands along with Jammu & Kashmir.

IndianOil Sports Scholarship Scheme: IndianOil awards Sports Scholarship to promising young sports persons representing State in team games and on National ranking in others. The Sports Scholarship Scheme awards 150 (number of scholarships increased from 72 to 150 during the year) for 10 games/sports (Cricket, Table Tennis,

Badminton, Tennis, Chess, Hockey, Golf, Billiards/Snooker, Carrom and Athletics) to upcoming junior players in the age groups upto 19 years. The scholarship amount varies from Rs.9000/-p.m. to Rs.14000/- p.m. based on the performance of the scholar for 3 years in addition to kit items. The Corporation also provides assistance towards travel and lodging etc. for scholars in individual games.

National Causes and Natural Calamities: IndianOil responds proactively to provide aid and relief to the victims of any natural calamities like floods, tsunami, earthquake, cyclones etc. IndianOil also contributes for national causes in the benefit of the nation like setting up of educational institutions of national importance like the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology to promoting a cause like National Childrens Fund, Jansankhya Sthirtha Kosh etc.

Environment As part of its environment-protection initiatives, IndianOil has invested close to Rs. 7,000 crore in state-of-the-art technologies at its refineries for production of green fuels meeting global standards. To further reduce dependence on precious petroleum products and secure the nations energy security, the Corporation is now in the process of commercialising various options in alternative fuels such as ethanol-blended petrol, biodiesel, and Hydrogen and Hydrogen-CNG.

With safety, health and environment protection high on its corporate agenda, IndianOil is committed to conducting business with a strong environment conscience, so as to ensure sustainable development, safe work places and enrichment of the quality of life of its employees, customers and the community. IndianOil is also committed to the Global Compact Programme of the United Nations and endeavors to abide by the 10 principles of the programme, some of which are already part of the Corporations Vision and Mission statements. It is the firm resolve of IndianOil People to move beyond business, touch every heart and fuel a billion dreams.

3. Aditya Birla Group

Corporate Social Responsibility Policy For us in the Aditya Birla Group, reaching out to underserved communities is part of our DNA. We believe in the trusteeship concept. This entails transcending business interests and grappling with the quality of life challenges that underserved communities face, and working towards making a meaningful difference to them. Our vision is to actively contribute to the social and economic development of the communities in which we operate. In so doing build a better, sustainable way of life for the weaker sections of society and raise the countrys human development index. (Mrs. Rajashree Birla, Chairperson, Aditya Birla Centre for Community Initiatives and Rural Development). Implementation process: Identification of projects All projects are identified in a participatory manner, in consultation with the community, literally sitting with them and gauging their basic needs. We recourse to the participatory rural appraisal mapping process. Subsequently, based on a consensus and in discussion with the village panchayats, and other influentials, projects are prioritised. Arising from this the focus areas that have emerged are Education, Health care, Sustainable livelihood, Infrastructure development, and espousing social causes. All of our community projects are carried out under the aegis of The Aditya Birla Centre for Community Initiatives and Rural Development.

In Education, our endeavour is to spark the desire for learning and knowledge at every stage through Formal schools Balwadis for elementary education Quality primary education Aditya Bal Vidya Mandirs Girl child education Adult education programmes.

In Health care our goal is to render quality health care facilities to people living in the villages and elsewhere through our Hospitals Primary health care centres Mother and Child care projects Immunisation programmes with a thrust on polio eradication Health care for visually impaired, and physically challenged Preventive health through awareness programmes. In Sustainable Livelihood our programmes aim at providing livelihood in a locally appropriate and environmentally sustainable manner through Formation of Self Help Groups for women empowerment Vocational training through Aditya Birla Rural Technology Parks Agriculture development and better farmer focus Watershed development Partnership with Industrial Training Institutes. In Infrastructure Development we endeavour to set up essential services that form the foundation of sustainable development through Basic infrastructure facilities Housing facilities Safe drinking water Sanitation & hygiene Renewable sources of energy. To bring about Social Change, we advocate and support Dowryless marriage Widow remarriage Awareness programmes on anti social issues De-addiction campaigns and programmes Espousing basic moral values.

Activities, setting measurable targets with timeframes and performance management. Prior to the commencement of projects, we carry out a baseline study of the villages. The study encompasses various parameters such as health indicators, literacy levels, sustainable livelihood processes, population data below the poverty line and above the poverty line, state of infrastructure, among others. From the data generated, a 1-year plan and a 5-year rolling plan are developed for the holistic and integrated development of the marginalised. These plans are presented at the Annual Planning and Budgeting meet. All projects are assessed under the agreed strategy, and are monitored every quarter, measured against targets and budgets. Wherever necessary, midcourse corrections are affected.

Organisational mechanism and responsibilities The Aditya Birla Centre for Community Initiatives and Rural Development provides the vision under the leadership of its Chairperson, Mrs. Rajashree Birla. This vision underlines all CSR activities. Every Manufacturing Unit has a CSR Cell. Every Company has a CSR Head, who reports to the Group Executive President (Communications & CSR) at the Centre. At the Company, the Business Director takes on the role of the mentor, while the onus for the successful and time bound implementation of the projects is on the various Unit Presidents and CSR teams. To measure the impact of the work done, a social satisfaction survey / audit is carried out by an external agency. Partnerships Collaborative partnerships are formed with the Government, the District Authorities, the village panchayats, NGOs and other like-minded stakeholders. This helps widen the Companys reach and leverage upon the collective expertise, wisdom and experience that these partnerships bring to the table. In collaboration with FICCI, we have set up Aditya Birla CSR Centre for Excellence to make CSR an integral part of corporate culture. The Company engages with well established and recognized programmers and national platforms such as the CII, FICCI, ASSOCHAM to name a few, given their commitment to inclusive growth. Budgets A specific budget is allocated for CSR activities. This budget is project driven. Information dissemination The Companys engagement in this domain is disseminated on its website, annual reports, its house journals and through the media. Management Commitment Our Board of Directors, our Management and all of our employees subscribe to the philosophy of compassionate care. We believe and act on an ethos of generosity and compassion, characterized by a willingness to build a society that works for everyone. This is the cornerstone of our CSR policy.

Our Corporate Social Responsibility policy conforms to the Corporate Social Responsibility Voluntary Guidelines spelt out by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Government of India in collaboration with FICCI (2009).
