Lesson 7 = = = Heat Pump Electrical me Components = Dee JHE EVOLUTION OF HEAT PUMP TECHNOLOGY IAS RESULTED IN NUMEROUS | variations in electrical components. Compressors used in heat pump systems range from reciprocating to scroll designs. They may be driven by single-speed or two-speed motors. New-generation residential scroll compressors make use of unloaders that vary the system capacity to better ‘match the load of a home. Variable-speed motors frequently are used for both outdoor fan motors and indoor blower motors in heat pump systems, Advances in electronic technology have made possible a wide range of strategies for defrosting the outdoor coil in the winter. The same advances have produced electronic thermostats that are far removed from the thermostats used when heat pump systems first became popular. In short, the progress made in engineering during the last decades of the 20th century have resulted in the production of ‘more sophisticated components for heat pump systems than can be completely addressed in this Lesson. In the following pages, you will have the opportunity to lear about the science behind some of the popular electrical components used to build a heat pump. Some Lessons in this Course are dedicated to specific electrical components, such as air-to-air defrost controls. This Lesson will focus on those important electrical components that are not covered by other Lessons.
