These tests are conducted by an organization which, while sponsored and supported by the industry, functions completely free from industry interference. That organization is the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (ARD), located in Arlington, Virginia, ‘This Lesson provides relevant excerpts from those ARI standards that pertain to heat pumps used by contractors today. The heat pump industry is very large and heat pump products that are commonly used in one part of the country may not be used in another region. When selecting equipment, you should look for the label on the unit that certifies conformance with the requirements of the applicable standard. It generally will ensure maximum performance in the field (assuming that the heat pump is sized correctly for the application, based on an accurate heat Joad calculation), The system must be installed in conformity with the manufacturer's instructions, adjusted properly on start-up, and serviced regularly.
