BROCHURE

Description:
A two-sided duplex brochure.

Date:
March 30, 2013

Course/Instructor:
COMM130 Section 01 Eric Lybbert

Programs/Tools Used:
Adobe InDesign Adobe Illustrator Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:
Set up and align a two-sided, folded document. Create an original company logo and use it in a brochure. Incorporate quality images.

Process:
This project was one that I really enjoyed. I loved being able to learn how to use the Adobe Suite more proficiently. It was an opportunity for me to use all of the different skills that I have learned throughout the semester. To create this brochure I started out by getting a blank 8.5 x 11 piece of paper. I then proceeded to fold the paper into the desired format that I wanted. I got a ruler and began to draw the different lines where I would fold and where I would cut. After drawing the lines I measured it out so that I would know where to place my guides in InDesign. I opened InDesign and created a rough blueprint of what I wanted A file that was blank except for the general outlines of folds and cuts. I then printed the file to see how my printer would deal with the information given so that I would know what changes I needed to make. Surprisingly it all aligned up perfectly the first time! I then proceeded to edit the document by adding in the images, logos and text I desired. After getting all of the information on the page I then arranged it several different ways until I found the way that I liked. Putting the logo on the front page was probably the most difficult part of this project. I say this because I had to re-create my logo it was not symmetrical. Then after re-creating the logo, I needed to separate it into two different illustrator documents so that I could place the images into InDesign. However, after I got all of this done the project was not too difficult. What you see above is the final product of my design.

MONTAGE

Description:
Create an image including two or more images that are gradually blended together to become one.

Date:
February 16, 2013

Course/Instructor:
COMM130 Section 01 Eric Lybbert

Programs/Tools Used:
Adobe Photoshop CS2 Wacom Bamboo Pen Tablet

Objectives:
Learn to manage Photoshop layers. Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks. Use filters. Apply appropriate typography.

Process:
To create this project I first browsed the web to find the two images which I used. I opened the image of the earth in Photoshop and cropped it to an 8.5 x 11 size. Following which I opened the image of the Christus and started the blending process. I did this by creating a mask on the Christus layer and using my Bamboo pen tablet to draw around the Christus to make it blend into the earth image. I then created a text box where I typed all of the words in the backgroundWikipedia and other various sites were useful in finding words for Christ in other languages. After having typed each of the words in the text box I created a layer mask for it. I then proceeded to blend the text into the background of the image. After the text was blended into the background I created the title Jesus Christ. I selected the Text and clicked the layer tab at the top and clicked on color overlay to create the yellow color with the background text showing through slightly. After all of the elements were on the page I aligned each element using guides in Photoshop. I then added the lens flare filter to the image where the sun is coming over the horizon, I turned down the opacity quite a bit so that it was not too obvious, but the difference is substantial. The last thing that I did was I selected the background text layer and I lowered its opacity to 23. I then selected the text layer mask and darkened certain areas of the text and lightened up other areas to create a 3D type view. I am pleased with the final product.

FLIER

Description:
Black and White Promotional Flier to Advertise a Graduate Leadership Conference

Date:
Jan 25, 2013

Course/Instructor:
COMM130 Section 01 Eric Lybbert

Programs/Tools Used:
Adobe InDesign CS6 Adobe Photoshop Elements 7

Objectives:
Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography. Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout. Retrieve image and logo from links on this page. Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links intact.

Process:
To make this design, First I created some sketches of what I wanted to do with this flier. I then edited the image from the website In Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 by altering the background of the image to have a more blurred watermark look; then cropped the hat out a little bit so it would overlap the title bar without going over anything else in the document. I then created the title, and the black rectangles behind it to add contrast to the entire page at first only half the title had a black background (I wanted more contrast in the end so I extended the black background to fill the entire title). I then worked my way down the page adding elements from the assigned text, arranging them one by one as I added them to the page. When I was finished getting all of the elements on the page I continued to edit the document to create more contrast by adding black bars to the sub-headings. I originally had the Vouant Logo faded on the collar of the student; however, I liked the professional appearance it gave with the logo in the corner (thus I resorted to that in the end). Lastly I made my final adjustments to the alignment of the document making sure that all of the elements were properly aligned and not distracting from the overall design. What you see to the right is the finished product.

LETTERHEAD

Description:
Letterhead for the fictitious company, Franzen Website Design

Date:
March 2, 2013

Course/Instructor:
COMM130 Section 01 Eric Lybbert

Programs/Tools Used:
Adobe Illustrator CS2

Objectives:
Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Design and layout a letterhead. Use the basic tools of Illustrator & InDesign.

Process:
I copied all of the formatting from my business card and insert it onto another blank 8.5x11in page to create my letterhead. I decided that I wanted to keep the black and green idea, so I used it as a border which added a nice contrast between the heading and the page that the text would be on. I created the watermark by copying the logo arrows and enlarging the then adding an opacity to it. Creating the letterhead was much easier than the business card because I already had many of the design principles figured out. The difficult part was deciding how I wanted to arrange them on the page. I decided that I still wanted the logo to point into the center of the pageonce again because it added nice flow. In order to get illustrator to export the image file correctly for it to have the white border (the page) around the file I had to add a white box the size of the backgroundillustrator wanted to cut it off and crop the file right at the border of the image. After adding the white box and arranging it to the back it worked perfectly.

LOGOS

Description:
3 custom designed logos for the fictitious company, Franzen Website Design

Date:
February 23, 2013

Course/Instructor:
COMM130 Section 01 Eric Lybbert

Programs/Tools Used:
Adobe Illustrator CS2

Objectives:
Create a variety of logos to fit a company or personal image. Use the basic tools of Illustrator.

Process:
The creation of this project was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed making it. I love Adobe Illustratorwhat you can do with it seems to be endless. First to create these logos I got out some scratch paper and I began to sketch out some ideas. The following logos are the ones that I came up with. The next step in my design was to create these logos in Adobe IllustratorIt was really hard at first, but after learning a few tips and trick from Brother Lybbert it became a breeze. The top logo is the first one that I created, then the second, then the 4th and then the 3rd. I dont know why I put them in that order on the page, but its how it turned out. I love number 3 the bestit was my last creation, but I feel that it really stands out and helps us to understand what the company is and what it stands for. To get my votes on which ones people liked the most I asked my roommates, posted the image to Facebook, and sent MMS messages to my family. The project you see to the right was the final result.

IMAGING

Description:
An imaging project to display proper composition and editing skills.

Date:
February 9, 2013

Course/Instructor:
COMM130 Section 01 Eric Lybbert

Programs/Tools Used:
Canon PowerShot SX220HS Adobe Photoshop Elements 7.0 Wacom Bamboo Pen Tablet

Objectives:
Learn basic photography skills. Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it. Size and crop the image. Adjust image brightness, contrast, hue and saturation levels. Use a selection tool to isolate a portion of the image. De-saturate the selected portion of the image. Use a filter or colorize a portion of the image.

Process:
I took this image using my point and shoot Canon SX220HS digital camera. To get the best composition possible I made sure that the chain was offset and not centered. I then opened the file in Photoshop Elements and cropped it to a 66 inch square. I then selected the chain in the foregroundI made use of my Wacom Pen Tablet to get smooth results. After selecting the chain I saved the selection for future use. I then saved the document and created a duplicate to editsince we are not using layers I wanted an original copy with the selection that I could revert back to just in case. I then inverted the selection and de-saturated the background completely. After de-saturating the background I applied the Gaussian Blur filter to blur the background more. I then re-inverted the selection and adjusted the brightness on the chain to make it stand out more and have a chrome effect. I then saved the image as you see it now.

WEB PAGE

Description:
A web page created from HTML and CSS coding to display website design and development skills.

Date:
March 16, 2013

Course/Instructor:
COMM130 Section 01 Eric Lybbert

Programs/Tools Used:
Notepad++ Adobe Illustrator Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:
Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page. Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target audience. Design a web page using HTML to display the logo and content. Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and basic understanding of CSS. Identify hex colors for web design. Compress multiple files in a zipped folder to attach as one file.

Process:
The process that I followed to create this file started out with putting my information onto the website with the given template. I then edited the CSS file to change the overall layout of the website. I added a white shadow to the main container, changed the background color, and aligned the images on the page. I then set out to arrange the text on the page in its appropriate locations. After everything was aligned in the correct places, I changed the colors of the headings, and backgrounds to match the colors of the logo Prior to taking this class and creating this website I have created several other websites. So the creation of this site was not too difficult. The software that I used to create this site was notepad++, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Adobe Illustrator (logos), and Adobe Photoshop (screen-shot). My logo description in the web page contains 373 words 173 above the requirement. Another design skill that I incorporated into my website was the use of a watermark. I made sure that the watermark was transparent enough to not cause a distraction, but to add variety to the page. I also made sure that the margins on the page were the same throughout the entire web page.

BUSINESS CARD

Description:
A business card design for the fictitious company, Franzen Website Design.

Date:
March 2, 2013

Course/Instructor:
COMM130 Section 01 Eric Lybbert

Programs/Tools Used:
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:
Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Create a Design and layout for a business card. Use the basic tools of Illustrator & InDesign.

Process:
The first thing that I did on this project was create the business card. I did this by first researching different ideas online. I found that the styles that stuck out to me were the ones with the black backgroundfrom this I knew that I wanted my business card to have a black background and lighter color for the text. One of my favorite contrast of colors is black, green, and white, so I decided to use those colors for this project. I created the logo at the end of the last project (logo creation). It was the 4th logo that I had made and instantly became my favorite. I tried several different positions on the business card for the logo but I decided that I was going to put the logo in the corner with it aiming at the name and contact information in the cornerthis gave it much more flow. I then formatted the text for the contact information and decided that I was going to add the green line to add an accent that would dived the name and the address information. I then decided that on the back of the card I wanted to have a QR code that would lead the customer to my contact information. These are the steps that I used to create the business card. In order to get illustrator to export the image file correctly for it to have the white border (the page) around the file I had to add a white box the size of the backgroundillustrator wanted to cut it off and crop the file right at the border of the image. After adding the white box and arranging it to the back it worked perfectly.

EVENT AD

Description:
A color full-bleed event ad to promote a fund-raiser using only Microsoft Word and a scanner.

Date:
February 2, 2013

Course/Instructor:
COMM130 Section 01 Eric Lybbert

Programs/Tools Used:
Microsoft Word HP Scanner PDF2JPG.net (PDF converter)

Objectives:
Set up and align a two-sided, folded document. Create an original company logo and use it in a brochure. Incorporate quality images.

Process:
To complete this project I first started by looking around for an image that I could use for an even to fund-raise moneythis was the idea that I wanted to go with. I came across an Eastbay Sporting Goods Magazine that was delivered to our apartment, it was perfect! I scanned the image several times until I achieved the size I wanted. I then removed the background of the image in Microsoft Word using the remove background function under image tools. After removing the background I applied a shadow the image to create the boxed slight gray hue. I then searched the font repertoire for a font that would be appropriate for my desired event. I then started working on designing and laying out the flier. I accidentally stumbled across the blue lines when creating a text box and decided that I liked them and stuck with them. After getting all of the element I wanted on the page I applied Microsoft Words grid function to assure that all elements on the page were properly aligned. I enjoy using Microsoft Word; I have created several documents such as this in the past and I am comfortable doing it again, and again.
