It is our policy at Holland & Holland to promote shooting in all its forms to the widest possible audience in the overall interest of the sport.

Holland & Holland started trading in 1835 as H. Holland at 9 King Street, Holborn, with the manufacture of best English guns and rifles.

Itwasrealisedmanyyearsagothatitwasnogoodproducinganextensiverangeofshotgunsandriflesifyouhadnomeansof adequatelytestingandregulatingthem.Soin1880thefirstHolland&HollandShootingGroundswereestablishedatKensalRise adjacenttothegun-makingfactory.TheGroundsprovidedfacilitiesfornotonlytestingandregulatingbothriflesandshotguns,but alsoforcustomerstohaveashootingsessionwiththeirownguns,ortobefittedfortheirnewgunusingthetrygun.Overthe interveningyearstheGroundshavemovedseveraltimes,butsince1932hasestablishedpermanentresidenceatitscurrenthome ona100acresiteinNorthwood,Middlesex,amere17milesfromcentralLondon. TherehasalsobeenamorerecentchangeofemphasisattheShootingGroundswhich,whilststillthecentrefortestingand regulatingguns,isnowmuchmoreextensivelyusedasateachingvenue,withcustomerstravellingfromfarandwidetoavail themselvesoftheexpertiseofourfamousshootinginstructors.TheGroundsarealsohometothecorporateentertainmentelement ofHolland&Hollandsoverallbusinessandhasundergonemajordevelopmentsinbothbuildingsandshootinglayoutsto accommodatethisfastgrowingbusinessmarket. Sowhatdoourclientsfindwhentheyvisitus?Guestsforeitherprivatelessonsorcorporategroupsaregreetedinourlodge,an oasisoftranquillitycomplementedbygreenleatherChesterfieldsandabottomlesscoffeepot.Outside,rollingfieldsare crisscrossedbygravelpathsleadingtotheshootingstandswhichcanpresentanextensivearrayoftargetsforbothnoviceand experiencedshots.

It was once said that If Mr Holland is unable to teach a man to shoot then no-one can, a sentiment that is every bit as true today as it was 100 years ago.

TheGroundsnowemployfourpermanentinstructors,whocanboastofalmost100yearsof teachingexpertisebetweenthem,ledbyChrisBirdwholearnthistradefromKenDavies, arguablytheworldsbestknownshootinginstructor.Littlesurprisethenthatshotgunshooters fromallovertheworldheadtowardsourGroundsatNorthwoodwhentheyfeelinneedofa coachingsession,eithertolearntoshoot,ortobrushuponexistingskills. Forthegameshot,simulatedpheasant,partridge,orwildfowlcanbepresentedfromanumberof towers,withbothmanualandautomatictrapsavailablesothatanyparticularproblemcanbe addressedandremedied.Forthededicatedgrouseshooterournewmulti-trapgrousebuttcanbe usedtoshowindividualbirds,orarealisticsequenceof25birdsnotforthefainthearted! FortheclayshootertheGroundsprovideanalmostunlimitedarrayofchallengingtargets,which caneitherbeshotselectivelyorbyshootingour50or100birdsportingcourses. Individuallessonsareavailablethroughouttheyear,sixdaysaweek,byappointmentonly, between0900and17.30inthesummerand0900until16.00inthewinter.Lessonsareusuallyfor oneortwohours,onaone-to-onebasis,butcanofcoursebesharedifrequired.Ifyouare planningtoshootonaregularbasisthereareanumberofseasonticketoptionsavailableon request.Shouldyouneedtheloanofagun,orhearingandeyeprotectionforyourlesson,these areavailablefreeofchargefortheperiodofyoursession.

THE LADY SHOT For years a traditional male sport, shooting has undergone something of a revolution in the past few years. In increasing numbers, ladies are taking up the sport and proving that they are not only the equal of their male colleagues but in many cases, better.
Longagowerecognisedtheimportanceofladyshooterstooursportandwecaterfortheir requirementsinseveralways.Weensurethatwehaveavailableaswidearangeofgunsas possible,notonly12gauge,butalsoaselectionofsmallergauges,including20and28gaugein bothsidebysideandoverandunder. AnintroductorylessontoshootingbyoneoftheHolland&Hollandprofessionalshooting instructorscaneliminatemanyoftheperceivedfearssufferedbyladyshooters.Thelevelofcare andattentiontodetailinthefirstprovisionofasuitablegunwillreassuremanyoftheexpertise andcaretofollow,makingtheearlylessonsajourneyofadventureratherthanaleapintothe unknown.Furtherlessonswillcontinuetobuildtheconfidenceandexpertise,resultingina satisfyingnumberofsmashedclays,andsotheadventurewillcontinue. WehavealsointroducedourGreenFeathersProgrammewiththeintentionofencouraginglady shootersandoverthelastfewyearsthecourseshaveintroducedmorethan1275ladieswithlittle ornoexperiencetothepleasuresofshotgunshooting. Themostimportantthingistokeeppractising,andthenaturalprogressionfromtheGreen FeathersistheSilverFeatherscourseforallthoseladieswhohaveadegreeofexpertiseandwho wishtocontinuetoimprovetheirtechnique. Thecoursesnotonlyencouragetheexpansionofshootingwithinthefemalefollowersofthesport butalsohelppromoteabetterawarenessofcountrysportsasawhole.

THE YOUNG SHOT It is with the younger generation that our future, and the future of shooting lies. It is incumbent upon organisations such as ours to ensure that the skills of shooting and safety in the field are passed down through future generations.
Weareoftenaskedbyparentscontemplatingshootinglessonsfortheirchildrenwhetherthereisa loweragelimitforstartingshooting,andthehonestanswertothisquestionisno!Themaincriteria forstartingshootingaretheabilitytosafelyhandleanappropriategunandthedesiretolearn! Asanyoneintheteachingworldknows,youarenevertooyoungtolearnanewskillor technique.Earlyprofessionaltuitionwillnotonlygiveyoungstersofbothsexesagood groundingintheartofshooting,butwillalsoensurethatnobadhabitsaredevelopedatan earlyage,somethingthatcansoeasilyhappenwithouttheexpertsguidinghand. Tothisendweareleadingthewayinprovidingboththefacilitiesandthecoursesforthe youngshooterandactivelypromotingtheircausetoawideraudience.Teachingtheyoung shotcantakeplaceonaone-to-onelessonbasiswithoneofourinstructors,orononeofour coursesspecificallytailoredtotheYoungShot. Theactualshootingassuchisonlyonepartofthelearningprocess.Includedintheyoung shotscoursearesessionsongunsafety,onwhichweplacegreatimportance,quarry identificationandfieldcraft.

GUN FITTING

Successful shooting at game birds or clay pigeons depends on a number of factors. These include such issues as consistently correct gun mounting (vital before any attempt can be made to fit a gun), foot positioning, weight distribution, head positioning and last, but by no means least, a correctly fitting gun.
Forsomeindividuals,duetopeculiaritiesofeyesightorbuild,theimportanceofcorrectgunfittingcannotbetoohighly emphasised.Althoughitcanbearguedthatagoodshotmayshootwellwithanill-fittinggun,itmustbeobviousthatawell-fitted gunwillhandlemoreeasilyinallcircumstancesandrequireslessadaptationofthebodytoachieveasuccessfulshot. Thebasisofgoodgunfittingliesinacombinationofastuteobservationbythefitter,alongwithexpertuseofthetry-gun. Atry-gun(ofwhichwehaveawidevariety)withitsfullyadjustablestock,isusedtodeterminethreesetsofmeasurements,those oflength,bendordrop,andcast-onoroff.Allthreemeasurementsareneededifanewgunisbeingbuilt,oranexistinggunisto bere-stocked.Oneormorewillbeneededifanexistingstockneedstobealtered.Oneofthebenefitsofourfittingserviceisthe availabilityofbothunderandoverandside-by-sidetry-gunsineither12or20gauge. Inordertoascertainthesemeasurementstheinstructor/fitterfirstsetstheapproximatemeasurementsonthetry-gun,basedona visualassessmentoftheclientsneeds.Undercarefulobservationofgunmountingetc.severalshotsarefiredatamarkona whitewashedpatternplate,afterwhichadjustmentstothetry-gunmaybemade.Finalmeasurementswillonlybearrivedatafter observingtheclientshootingatavarietyofmovingtargets,whilstwearingtheappropriateclothingusedunderfieldconditionsfor eithergameorclayshooting.

Cartridges & Ammunition ThefullrangeofHolland&Hollandrifleandshotgun ammunitionisavailable,eitherforuseattherange,orinthe field.Clientsareaskedtoensurethattheyhavetheirshotgun orriflecertificatewiththemwhenseekingtopurchase ammunitionforuseawayfromtheGrounds.

Therangeoffers100yardtargetsfromafullyweatherprotectedpositionwitha50yard optionalsoavailable.Allofthenormalstancescanbepractisedincludingstanding,sitting, kneelingandprone.
