Getting Around The Lake

Its easy to nd your way around the Lake of the Ozarks area if you know some of the basics. To help you plan your vacation and get where you want to go when you arrive, we have divided this guide into four color-coded sections for Lake East, North, South and West. In the following pages, youll also nd descriptions of each of these geographic areas. In the meantime, the following are some helpful facts about getting around the Lake by land and by water.

By Water
Many Lake area visitors and residents prefer to visit their favorite restaurants and nightclubs by boat. With more than 40 establishments on or overlooking the water, there are plenty from which to choose! The 92-mile main channel of the Lake is also known as the Osage Arm, since the Lake was created by damming the Osage River. There are four arms that branch o the main channel: the Gravois Arm, Grand Glaize Arm, Little Niangua Arm and Big Niangua Arm. On the maps in this guide, youll notice a series of numbers printed along the waterways. These numbers represent Lake mile markers, abbreviated MM or mm, and are used to communicate a location with Lake access. For example, Public Beach #1 at Lake of the Ozarks State Park is at the 12MM on the Grand Glaize Arm. MM (or mm) without an arm designation refers to a main channel location.

By Land
The main thoroughfares in the Lake of the Ozarks area are US Highway 54, State Highway 5 and State Highway 52. US Highway 54 and State Highway 5 intersect at Camdenton. US Highway 54 serves the East, North and portions of the South areas of the Lake. Highway 5 serves the West area and parts of the South. Highway 52 connects US Highway 54 to State Highway 5, providing access to the northernmost areas of the Lake. In general, most destinations can be reached from these three roads. Please note, the new 54 expressway project is now complete. The old section of Hwy 54 has been designated as Osage Beach Parkway and has limited access to Hwy 54. Bagnell Dam Boulevard provides access to Bagnell Dam, HH/ Horseshoe Bend Parkway and the Community Bridge; US Highway 54 bypasses those areas. The Community Bridge, a toll bridge, connects Horseshoe Bend with Shawnee Bend and ultimately Highway 5 on the west side of the Lake.

Free maps are available throughout the Lake area. However, a highly detailed, 28 x 40 oicial map is available through the Lake of the Ozarks Convention & Visitor Bureau for $5.95. To order, please send your mailing address and a check payable to: Lake of the Ozarks CVB, PO Box 1498, Osage Beach, MO 65065.

Explore Lake of the Ozarks

From blu tops to lakeshore, theres a lot to explore in the great outdoors at the Lake of the Ozarks. Even without the Lake, this area would be a treasure with its rolling hills, blus, forest and other unique terrain features. When you add all this with beautiful lake vistas, you have one of the most scenic vacation destinations in Mid-America. The Lake oers four distinct seasons, each one bringing a refreshing change of pace, oering unique nature and wild life viewing experiences. We are blessed with two state parks, including the largest one in Missouri. A visit to one of the state parks is a must for anyone. There are hundreds of miles of trails ranging from the easily accessible to the moderately strenuous. The trails here are mostly intended for day hikers with a majority of the trails tailored toward those interested in hiking relative short distances. A few of the longer trails allow horses and/or bikes. In addition to the boating opportunities on the Lake, there are several streams and lower water areas that are great for canoeing and kayaking. There are a few outtters operating within the area that oer oat trips, with many more outtters within the outlying area. Floating a Missouri stream is a relaxing way to experience nature.

Another great way to see the natural beauty of the Lake is to take a driving tour. There are hundreds of miles of scenic highways and lake roads that allow you to tour the Lake and surrounding woods. The US Hwy 54 to State road W to MO Hwy 5 triangle is a great route with which to start, but there are too many other great drives to mention. Fall is an especially scenic time for a drive here! Caves allow you to beat the heat on a summers afternoon. The Lake is home to four show caves that allow the average person to experience a glimpse into the unique world underground. The sportsman has a multitude of sh and game to go after. Birdwatchers will be kept busy by both the varieties and quantities of fowl, including such majestic birds as the Great Blue Heron and the Bald Eagle. Deer, groundhogs, raccoons, foxes and squirrel are just a few of the species that are abundant and often seen by visitors to the Lake. For those who know the joy of sitting around a campre under the stars, the Lake oers a multitude of camping options. Lake of the Ozarks State Park has several primitive camping areas that are hard to beat for their beauty. If you arent quite ready to leave all the creature comforts of home behind, there are several full service campgrounds and RV parks located throughout the Lake area.

Scenic Areas

Swinging Bridges and Shallows

This area is named for a wood-planked suspension bridge that crosses the Auglaize Creek. Its a great place for picnicking, swimming, tubing, wading or shing, depending on the height of the water. Take Hwy 42 west from Osage Beach or State Road A west from Linn Creek to Swinging Bridges Rd. Its a great day trip!

Missouri Department of Conservation AreaCamdenton

North of Camdenton lies a 40 acre conservation area. An 80 foot viewing platform that is open to the public allows visitors to get a birds eye view of the Lake. Beautiful & Breathtaking Formations

Caves are fragile ecosystems and extreme care must be taken when exploring wild caves. For your safety and the safety of the environment, we recommend that amateur cavers stick to show caves, which are wild caves that have been tamed through tremendous work and expense. Paved walkways, bridges and hand rails have been constructed and lights have been installed for the convenience of viewing natures underground beauty with little eort and very safely. No special clothing or equipment is necessary. The Lake is blessed with four such caves within 30 miles of each other. Want-to-be spelunkers can experience geology, hydrology and anthropology in these underground classrooms. One of the best things about visiting a cave is that no matter what the weather or season, the temperature is approximately 50-60 degrees year-round, varying slightly with each cave: warm in the winter, cool in the summer. The Trails of Lake of the Ozarks State Park

With 11 trails ranging from one mile to 16.5 miles long, Missouris largest state park (17.441 acres) attracts hikers, from casual strollers to serious trekkers. The best way to start a hike is to stop by the Trail Center on Highway 34 for information about the trails and their features. The park oce also has trail guides available. All of the parks trails are open to the public. Entrance signs identify each trailhead and intersections are marked with colored directional arrows. Bluestem Knoll Trail A moderate three-quarter-mile loop through native grasslands provides a glimpse of Missouris past 200 years ago.

Coakley Hollow Trail A one-mile trail takes hikers over a boardwalk to Coakley Hollow Fen and past a natural glade, dam and mill site.

43

Outdoors
Shady Ridge Trail This half-mile trail winds along the Lake shore. Hidden Springs/Squaws Revenge Trail The two-mile trail, used by hikers and equestrians, takes hikers or horseback riders through forested hills to blu tops above the Lake where visitors enjoy a breathtaking view of the Grand Glaize arm. This trail formerly was used as a Civil War supply road. A group of Confederate soldiers carrying supplies here fell to a nighttime Union ambush; theyre buried in a small family cemetery in the Glaize Valley, which hikers pass by. The yucca plants, not native to Missouri, indicate settlers were here in the past. Trail of Four Winds Hikers, bicyclists and equestrians share this 16.5-mile trail that takes visitors through some of the most scenic and challenging landscapes in the park. The trail winds through forests, open grasslands and bottomland hardwoods and takes visitors along the Lake and past an unusual rock formation. A wooden boardwalk leads to an overlook that provides a panoramic view of the forested valley below.

Fawns Ridge Trail Hikers enjoy this easy, two-mile wildlife road that winds along the side of a wooded ridge and circles a hilltop. Its not unusual to see early-morning songbirds and, as the name suggests, white-tailed deer. The rst half-mile of the trail is accessible to people with disabilities or families with small children in strollers. Honey Run Trail Approximately nine miles of secluded singletrack bike/hiking trail is nestled quietly into the Ozark wilderness. Some sections are very sensitive to damage during wet conditions, so please excercise discretion and check on trail conditions before riding. Lake View Bend Trail A one-and-a-half-mile trail along the base of steep clis provides a wonderful water view and puts on a spectacular show of spring wildowers. Lake Trail Experience a half-mile trail through a peaceful Ozark hollow. Rocky Top Trail The rst loop of this moderate, three-mile gure-eight trail travels through the most diverse glade in the park and along savanna and dry woodland slopes, then back along a pretty Lake cove. The second loop includes an overlook on a towering blu and a typical Osage River Hills ridge top.

Woodland Trail This moderate six-mile hiking trail, that starts behind the Trail Center, meanders through the Patterson Hollow Wild Area. Hikers will see diverse habitats, including old homesteaders elds, dense oak and hickory forests, dry streambeds, spring-fed seeps, nearly barren ridge tops and lush ravines. The solitude of the wild area can provide an outstanding opportunity to observe nature.

Cycling

Horseback Riding

The Lake of the Ozarks area is increasingly becoming a cycling destination. The Lakes trails appeal to cyclists of all ages, styles and levels. These singletrack trails range from six to 16.5 miles long, oering cycling excitement, as well as exquisite scenery. Honey Run Trail, The only bike-specic trail in Missouri, designated as such within the state park system, is a seven-mile trail built to meet the high standards of the International Mountain Biking Association. It consists of a pair of loops on easy terrain. Its a lot of fun and ne for beginners, she says. More advanced cyclists also like it because, although it doesnt have a lot of stunts, it does have some interesting technical areas. Trail of the Four Winds This trail runs from three-and-a-half to 16 miles, depending on your route. The most popular route is an 11-mile loop with a one-mile climb at the end. The trail climbs through thick oak forests, travels along the Lake, runs over ridge tops and down into valleys. Its just a great trail, but not for beginners, Dougan says. Cyclists from Utah and Colorado come here just to ride this trail and it leaves them surprised and impressed. Four Seasons Paved Greenway Beginners, families with children and casual riders can enjoy 9 miles of paved multi-use trail starting at the Village of Four Seasons City Hall, located 4 miles down Horseshoe Bend Parkway o of Business 54. The trail parallels Horseshoe Bend Parkway, Bittersweet and Cherokee. For trail information, contact Oz Cycles (www.oz-cycles.com), where visitors can rent bicycles and nd out more about local bicycle club rides. Visit www.funlake.com for bike trail maps.

Viewing nature from horseback provides a unique perspective and the Lake of the Ozarks is blessed to have two trails within the State Park open to equestrian use. The Trail of the Four Winds provides trailhead parking for horse trailers for those bringing their own horses. The trail head for Hidden Springs/Squaws Revenge Trail is a staging area for the State Parks Riding Stables, where a private rm contracts with the Park to oer trail rides. In addition to the State Park, there are additional private trails within the area. There is no better way to experience the natural beauty of the Ozarks than to oat a stream. Missouri is known for scenic canoeing, rafting, tubing and kayaking. The Little Niangua River is a beautiful stream that isnt widely known, so it generally oers a very secluded feel. There are a few outtters located north of Macks Creek oering oat trips suitable for those looking for a half days to a full days excursion. The Little Niangua is an easy paddle trip for almost anybody, regardless of skill or experience. Generally, it has adequate ow for paddle trips year-round. There are several public river access points, including Ha Ha Tonka State Park and Lake Niangua.

Bird Watching Just like people, birds are drawn to the Waters of the Lake. Almost half the species of birds found in North America have been recorded in Missouri, so you never know what bird you might see at the Lake. More than 2,000 bald eagles winter in Missouri and the Lake is a great destination for viewing them. Seeing this majestic bird in the wild is more than worth a trip to the Lake during the winter. There is an annual eagle festival held in early January. Check the calendar at www.funlake.com for details. Critter Watching Nearly 70 species of wild mammals live in Missouri. The Lakes natural terrain makes a good habitat for wild animals and most of Missouris animal species can be found here. Observing a wild animal while in one of our forests is quite likely. Generally, youll run across animals early in the morning or at dusk. The Lakes numerous caves support a large bat population, many of which are endangered, so please be respectful of their habitat. Bats help manage the insect population and are harmless and shy creatures.

Generally speaking, the easiest way to nd out more on what trails are open is to contact one of the riding services operating within the Lake area.

Sailing at the Lake
Toss your cares to the wind. Sailing, one of the most exhilarating sports, combines physical exercise, the science of aero- and hydro-dynamics, and the strategies of chess into hours of thrill and serenity, depending on the wind and weather at the moment. From Bagnell Dam to the 8-mile marker is some of the best wind for sailing in open water, surrounded by a beautiful shoreline. But in no way is this the only area for sailing. You can easily spend a week sailing over a hundred miles of Lake, arms and coves, enjoying restaurants and the architectural variety of homes along the way.

Marinas like Ozark Yacht Club oer sailing schools for both adults and children. In summer they run week-long youth programs, perfect for kids to become accomplished sailors while learning the essentials of water safety and aero dynamics. Once certied, you may charter sailboats in the Caribbean and use any of the OYCs eet boats, ranging from 9-ft Open Bics for the kids, to 40- racer/cruisers for the whole family.

Lake of the Ozarks is a premier venue for water recreation, so it should be no surprise that it is home to some of the most challenging sailing in the Midwest. Still one of the best kept secrets on the Lake is the community of sailors who gather on Saturdays in the spring and fall to challenge each other on a typical 3-mile triangle race course. The Ozark Sailing Club, one of the oldest clubs on the Lake, was founded in 1983 and, with the help of Ozark Yacht Club, is bringing sailing to the forefront of activity on the Lake.

Each year in October, the Lake of the Ozarks hosts sailors from all over the Midwest to compete for the Ozark Cup. Sponsored by Ozark Yacht Club, this event is the pinnacle of the sailing season and a great spectator sport for power boaters. Said one who watched a race from the foredeck of his 42-ft Searay: I dont have a clue how it works, but it was fun watching them jockey for the best starting positions and then heeling way over at full speed just a few feet apart. During one such duel, a passing boat oered to toss a beer to a competitor, but I think he was just rubbing it in. Go sailing at the Lake of the Ozarks and toss your cares to the wind!

The Lake has seen a renaissance in craft wineries over the last decade. Scenic beauty paired with fine wine and gourmet food make for a memorable experience regardless of the season. Touring the Lake of the Ozarks Wine trail is a fun way to spend an afternoon, day or even an entire weekend. Missouri is known for its rich heritage as a wine producing state. The area became known as Missouri Rhineland referring to its similarities to that region in Germany and the influence of the German immigrants on the industry in the 1800s. In the mid-1880s, more wine was produced by volume in Missouri than in any other state. Due to prohibition and the growth of the California wine industry, Missouri wineries today tend to be small and more focused on crafting their wine in the old world traditions. The wine throughout the state is among the best in the world and because scarcity, its also one of the best kept secrets. Missouris wine industry has grown into an attraction in its own right and complements an already thriving tourism industry.
