Emails: electronic platform for sending and receiving information and/or data with the aid of the internet. The benefits of using e-mail may include: It is faster to transmit (almost instantaneous); It is more convenient and ecologically friendly (no paper); There is an automatic record of when the e-mail is read; It is possible to send the e-mail to number of recipients for no extra effort Furthermore the use of email over the internet is preferred to the postal system because: It is faster than post(an unlike telephone message, time differences are unimportant); It is more convenient and ecologically friendly (no paper); It is possible to send the same email to a number of recipients for no extra effort. IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is a real-time communications system that allows Internet users to chat with each other in channels, or rooms, as well as via private messaging. There are many IRC software applications available, some of them browser based. Transferring files is just one of many additional features available in IRC. Gopher:A type of Internet service first floated around 1991 and obsolesced around 1995 by the World Wide Web. Gopher presents a menuing interface to a tree or graph of links; the links can be to documents, run- able programs, or other gopher menus arbitrarily far across the net. Some claim that the gopher software, which was originally developed at the University of Minnesota, was named after the Minnesota Gophers (a sports team). Others claim the word derives from American slang `gofer' (from "go for", dialectal "go fer"), one whose job is to run and fetch things. Finally, observe that gophers dig long tunnels, and the idea of tunneling through the net to find information was a defining metaphor for the developers. Probably all three things were true, but with the first two coming first and the gopher-tunnel metaphor

serendipitously adding flavor and impetus to the project as it developed out of its concept stage. WAIS (Wide Area Information Servers): These servers allow users to conduct fulltext keyword searches in documents, databases, and libraries connected to the Internet. From Glossary of Distance Education and Internet Terminology. It is a commercial software package that allows the indexing of huge quantities of information, and then making those indices searchable across networks such as the Internet. A prominent feature of WAIS is that the search results are ranked ("scored") according to how relevant the "hits" are and that subsequent search can find "more stuff like that last batch" and thus refine the search process.
