ABOUT ME

Ink-wash paintings use only black inks, but in various stroke weights in order to capture the depth and atomsphere of scenery. In that regard, I believe the most successful architecture should be able to negotiate with the world through simplicity of form and space, while carrying deep and complex information within. My educational background provided an interesting starting point for me to study architecture. Coming from Hong Kong, the intense educational system gave me an opportunity to expand my knowledge base to various elds, from conventional studies like literature, science and geography to even controversal topics such as religion. It is this educational system that makes me know a little bit of everything without being procient at anything. My parents thankfully brought me to the United States and allow me to utilize my educational background while simultaneously improving it. This is the reason why i chose architecture as my major. As an architect, I must acquire knowledge of everything, from structure to facade, programs to site, codes to topography and most importantly, the user experiences within my architecture design. This ever-growing learning enviroment of architecture will only make me better as a student, a designer and a person.

Material Strategies for the Physical World

This first studio in a sequence of four foundation studios introduces the student to spatial problem-solving. A sequence of increasingly complex problems charge the students with working within two opposing knowledge-based fields: analytical and intuitive operations are applied to the study of materials, their potential for transformation, their capacity to suggest ideas and intentions, organizational concepts and abstract spaces. The interrelationship between the act of making and the process of execution are studied. The studio begins with an examination of two-dimensional problems, then focuses on problem-solving in three dimensions. The semester was finish with the installation of Gradient, which is still being display at the mezzanine level above Sci-Arc Cafe.

The building focus on the interaction between the public and the residences. Jazz music is never monotonous, the technique of improvisation allows the musicians to create different atomsphere when they perform. The social interaction sparks musicians to add life experiences into their music pieces while having a private space to record/ jam when they reach the area that were designed for those purpose. Jazz music process a harmonic melody which are created between the intercation of serveral unique musical instruments which each has it own sound. Hence, indiviuality is a main element within Jazz music, solos occur frequently within a piece of music. The improvisation makes Jazz music fun to play but also fun to watch/ listen for the audiences thus making the distance between the two groups closer and closer.

FIELD OPERATIONS: STATIC ARCHITECTURAL SYSTEMS

Las Vegas, being known as the Entertainment Capital of the World, is unfortunately located in a desert. The temperature is torturous and people do not want to go out because of the climate. This community is lacking a public space that they can be proud of, to hang out yet not being expose to the sun. The site, situated on the intersection between South Durango Dr and West Russell Road was introduced. The neighborhood is under developed with the addition of freeways and growing population in the area. An idea of a green house+library is being proposed in order to create that public space for the people who work, live or study around the community. There are two major ideas behind this project: 1. Creating micro-climate for different reading spaces in order to create the atomsphere for the specific categories of books. 2. Creating a circulation that allows people to move around the whole library to experience different knowledge base, understanding the world in a way that works the same as drawing a whole picture by connecting the dots.

DYNAMIC ARCHITECTURAL SYSTEMS: ANABOLIC, METABOLIC, CATABOLIC

The space of the site, located between the 20th street onramp to the westbound 10 freeway and Magnolia Ave, is limited due to its orientation along the freeway and the community adjacent to it hinders the development. A proposal of combining microhousing and skip floors lifted the living spaces up, making it narrow yet most spacious. The use of micro-housing also creates a continuity to the single housing unit community that is surrounding the site, blending itself smoothly with the community without being extravargant. In order to give unique identity to each household, the madanely identical units are being conjoined and rotated so that different views achieved or received different amount of sunlight. Also, the shape changes according to the different quantity of needed bedrooms. Even though all the units ultimately look different, they were all constructed by a method which by which pieces of aluminum panels are laid on top of the steel frame structre to give the tube-like shape which ties everything back together again.

FIGURAL
Investigating LAs Entropic Urban Condition
Current urban planning strategies make use of prescribed, predeterminded measures applied to static sites and ignore the complexity and nuances of our cities. Urban design, in the 21st century must address the ever-changing array of complex issues that make up our contemporary urban culture. Urbanism today, requires a dynamic response to todays cultural and environmental fl ux. The goal of this studio is to develop a series of operational strategies drawn from the existing conditions of the city, site and the project brief. New organizational and programmatic possibilities will be uncovered through the adaptation and mediation of organizational structure. Infrastructural framework and networked urban links will serve as a starting point. Topograhpic, geometric and programmatic organizations will be investigated.
