Business owners share tips on sustainable living
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Moorestown Sun
Business owners are always
finding ways to improve produc-
tivity. Some adjust marketing
strategies, get more involved in
social media or alter operating
strategies. But when most think
of efficiency and cost savings,
practicing environmental sus-
tainability may not come to mind.
According to Don Powell, a
local business owner and liaison
to Sustainable Moorestown and
the Moorestown Business Associ-
ation, most business owners dont
realize the smallest sustainable
practice can go along way.
In 2009, Powell got into the
solar and energy business after
he installed solar panels on his
home.
KRISTINA SCALA/The Moorestown Sun

Price of solar has decreased
It was working out really well,
and I decided that there were
other people in the world who
might be interested in that as
well, he said.
He said since he started, the
solar landscape has changed.
Three years ago, solar was
three times as much as it is
today, he said. The state offered
healthy rebates to help make
the price of solar installation af-
fordable and to encourage more
people to move toward solar.
The rebates have since de-
creased, but the price of solar de-
creased as well.
According to Powell, the re-
bates were set up to help get the
market going. Since then, the
material cost has decreased and
production has increased.
New Jersey has more solar on
a per capita basis than Califor-
nia, Powell said.
Powell said solar is an invest-
ment it will take some time to
see the cost savings. But long
term it will help save on utility
expenses.
There is a public sentiment in-
volved in environmental sustain-
ability.
The fact that a business would
be using solar to power its needs
speaks to that part of the popu-
lous of people that are con-
cerned. It gives a certain image to
the business, he said.
Powell said another benefit is
within the community.
In the long run, all of us bene-
fit from environmentally friendly
practices, he said.
As a member of Sustainable
Moorestown and the MBA, Powell
said he tries to educate other
MBA members on what Sustain-
able Moorestown is trying to ac-
complish.
He said Sustainable
Moorestown is working with the
township and local businesses to
improve efficiency and sustain-
ability; they are running several
education programs and events to
educate business owners and resi-
dents on how to be more sustain-
able; as well as sharing informa-
tion on how businesses that recy-
cle can save the township on
taxes.
Powell said there are a few
businesses in town that are cur-
rently practicing sustainability.
Dave Schill, owner of David W.
Schill Builder, has been taking
metal waste to the scrapyard for
the past 10 years. Although Schill
gets money out of scrapping met-
als, he does not do it for the
money.
As a very small businessman,
I take recyclable materials from
our job sites, primarily metals. I
take them to the scrapyard so that
they can be put back in the sys-
tem, he said.
Schill said he mostly deals with
materials such as drywall, wood
and plaster. But the plumbers and
electricians are the ones who
work mostly with valuable met-
als.
They are the ones who are key
to saving copper, aluminum and
brass, Schill said, adding he
hopes more plumbers and electri-
cians would be more environmen-
tally conscious when it comes to
recycling unused metals.
Powell and Schill shared tips
for local businesses to practice
when thinking about environ-
mental sustainability.
Powell said businesses can get
an energy audit to see how much
energy is being used as well as
what changes should be made.
The state offers rebates for ener-
gy upgrades.
Having a lighting audit would
help as well. By changing to effi-
cient bulbs, businesses would
save money and use less energy.
Recycling is another tip to
being environmentally sustain-
able. Powell said recycling could
cut back on waste production.
According to Schill, he said
there are construction companies
that do not recycle paper materi-
als or cardboard. By recycling
those materials, it would save the
company on demolition costs and
leave more room in the dump-
sters.
He said if they cant recycle
materials, folding cardboard
boxes would help save room, pre-
venting the company from pur-
chasing another dumpster.
Its in everybodys interest to
recycle paper, Powell said.
Businesses could also look into
composting materials, purchase
recycled paper or other materials,
and restaurants could buy pro-
duce from local markets to prac-
tice sustainability.
We are trying to encourage to
buy local, Powell said.
He said these sustainable prac-
tices would benefit the communi-
ty both economically and envi-
ronmentally.
Its in our best interest to look
at this as we are being good stew-
ards of our planet, Schill said.

n professional sports, winning is
everything. Winning is the only
thing. Second place is first loser.
As former NFL head coach Herm
Edwards famously said in a post-game
press conference when he was with the
New York Jets: You play to win the
game. You dont play to just play it.
Thats the great thing about sports:
You play to win.
Players, coaches and front office per-
sonnel are paid to produce success on
the field, and they are judged by the
level of that success.
Its not silly, and its not immature.
Professional sports rally cities, rally
countries. They are a source of great
pride and passion, and fans spend
handsome sums to support their
teams.
The more successful the team, the
more passionate the fan base. There-
fore, the more successful the team, the
more money it makes.
Unfortunately, this emphasis on win-
ning at all costs has seeped down to
amateur levels of sport. Collegiate
sports especially at the highest lev-
els have become about winning at all
costs, too, because they are big money
generators for universities. The more a
team wins, the more its players and
coaches are profiled, and the more like-
ly those players and coaches will earn
big contracts.
This was never more evident than
last week, when tapes of former Rut-
gers University basketball coach Mike
Rice surfaced, showing Rice who was
fired last week throwing balls at play-
ers heads, yelling at players and utter-
ing homophobic slurs during prac-
tices, all, apparently, because he want-
ed to win.
Debate has raged over whether colle-
giate athletes are really amateurs any-
more, or whether they should be paid
for their efforts, above and beyond
scholarship money. That debate is for a
different day.
The dangerous part of this story, is
how this culture of winning seeps its
way further down the chain to youth
sports, at high schools, travel teams or
even Little Leagues.
The lure of big money in sports is
hard to ignore even this far down the
ladder, and its easy to lose focus on
what sports are really about building
leaders, fostering a sense of communi-
ty and teamwork, and having fun.
So coaches, ADs, administrators and
players, never forget that winning isnt
everything, winning isnt the only
thing, and second place isnt first loser.
Win or die? Lets be real
Youth coaches, parents and kids: Dont lose focus on what sports are all about
Just win, baby!
With our society focused on winning
at all costs, how do we send the proper
message to our kids involved in youth
sports? Tell us your thoughts on the
topic.
Planning for Fourth of July parade underway
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Moorestown Sun
What better way to celebrate Independ-
ence Day with no work and the third annu-
al Moorestown Fourth of July Parade?
While most Moorestonians might be
starting to plan their summer vacations,
Moorestowns Fourth of July Parade Com-
mittee began event planning in January.
Dave Schill, chair of Moorestown
Fourth of July Parade, said for the past
three years the theme of the parade has
been different. The first years theme was
1776 and last years was The Liberty
Bell.
This years theme is Made in America.
Schill said participants create floats and
costumes that best represent the theme. He
said he hopes within the next few years,
the parade would end at Memorial Field for
an extended Fourth of July celebration.
But thats way down the road, he said,
adding it is one of the committees goals to
add more Moorestown tradition to the pa-
rade.
In order to have a tradition, you have to
start one. But you have to keep it going,
Schill said.
This years tradition, surrounded by the
Made in America theme, will include the
Polish-American String Band and Civil
War Band, classic cars, antique fire trucks
and many floats. Community organiza-
tions such as STEM, the Garden Club, Boy
Scouts and Girl Scouts and more will
march in the parade.
Veterans are an important part of the

There are four donation levels
parade. They will join the march
down Main Street.
Schill, a Naval veteran of the
Vietnam War, said its important
to honor and thank the men and
women who serve in the military.
After serving in wars to pro-
tect our freedom, why are we not
celebrating our freedom? Schill
asked, adding the committee is
looking for more veterans to
march in the parade.
He said the project is commu-
nity funded and no tax dollars go
into the event. The committee
hopes to raise another $5,000 to
hit the $10,000 goal for the parade.
There are four donation levels.
A donation of $17.76 would reach
the red level, $177.76 would
reach the white level and $1,776
would reach the blue level.
There is also an other level
for any donation amount.
Moorestown Running Compa-
ny will host a Freedom Run to
begin the parade. Schill said this
is the first year the run is taking
place.
Parents are also encouraged to
enter their children into the pa-
rade with decorated wagons,
bikes and scooters.
For more information or to
make a donation, visit

County animal shelter
to host free day of
family and animal fun
A free day of family and ani-
mal fun will be held on Saturday,
April 27, at the Burlington Coun-
ty Animal Shelter, the only ani-
mal shelter serving the entire
community of Burlington Coun-
ty.
The day is focused on bringing
families and citizens to the shel-
ter to celebrate animals and their
favorite pets, and maybe to find a
new friend or member of the fam-
ily too.
The outdoor event will have
many pet friendly vendors offer-
ing things from training services
to fancy dog sweaters, cat toys to
bark collars, a bake sale with deli-
cious treats for the family and the
furry, a free raffle drawing for
everyone who attends, live music,
a digital pet photo booth, tattoos
for kids, a Kiss-A-Bull kissing
booth where you can interact
with a sweet, adoptable and
adorable Staffordshire terrier,
Commemorative Paw Prints and
much, much more. The shelter
will also be open for tours, meet
and greets and an opportunity to
see the animals.
The event is hosted and coordi-
nated by the volunteer organiza-
tion that serves the Burlington
County Animal Shelter, Friends
of the Burlington County Animal
Shelter. All the proceeds go to our
enrichment programs and for our
advertising initiatives to get more
people out to the shelter and get
more animals adopted into forev-
er homes.
Pre-event and day-of Volun-
teers are more than welcome and
so are donations to the bake sale
and rummage market. Contact
the Friends of the Burlington
County Animal Shelter at
www.friendsofBCAS.org for more
information.

Assemblyman Troy Singleton on
March 13. Singleton openly ad-
dressed questions and concerns
from the public regarding the
New Jersey state budget, gun con-
trol, post-Sandy recovery, and a
host of other topics. We were
truly honored to host Assembly-

will host newly elected Burling-
ton County Freeholder Aimee
Belgard on Tuesday, April 16, at
7:30 p.m. in the D'Olier Room of
the Moorestown Monthly Meet-
ing. Belgard and running mate,

Chosen Freeholders in November
2012, integrating a previously all-
Republican five-member board.
From 2010 to 2013, she served as
Township Committeewoman in
Edgewater Park. Additionally,
Ms. Belgard is the President-Elect
of the American Cancer Society
Board, Eastern Division. The
New Jersey General Assembly
recognized Ms. Belgard in 2012 as
an Outstanding Woman for her
volunteerism and community
service.
Come join us to personally con-
gratulate Belgard and hear her
speak on Burlington County
goals, initiatives and challenges

Roberts Elementary School
welcomed more than 100 grand-
parents to their grand book fair
event on Thursday, March 21.
Grandparents and grandchildren
perused books at the schools
book fair and enjoyed a snack to-
gether in the caf.
A colorful paper chain decorat-
ed the hallway.
For every book sold, students
are invited to write their name on
a link and add it to the chain,
Deborah Della Rosa, chair of the
Roberts book fair said. The chil-
dren love seeing it grow from day
to day.
Proceeds of the event benefit
Moorestown Home & School As-
sociation.
I appreciate the opportunity
to see my grandson and to see his
school and some of his artwork
on the walls, Ryan Lynchs
grandmother, Carol Larro said.
They grow so fast, every mo-
ment is precious.
The generosity of grandpar-
ents helped the school to increase
book sales by 20 percent.
The Home & School Associa-
tion received many positive com-
ments from families and staff.
Several parents pointed out
the age-old truth that grandpar-
ents say yes when parents say
no. Many expressed the hope
that the event might become a tra-
dition.

2013 Moorestown CROP Walk scheduled for Sunday, May 5
The 2013 edition of the
Moorestown CROP Walk is sched-
uled to take place on Sunday, May
5, at 2 p.m. For those not familiar
with this annual event, it solicits
donations to fight hunger both
globally and locally. Under the
theme Ending Hunger One Step
at a Time, the event supports the
Scriptural message, Lord, when
was it that we saw you hungry or
thirstyand did not take care of
you? (Matthew 25:44). Monies
raised by participants through
per-mile pledges as well as contri-
butions from the public support
programs of Church World Serv-
ice (www.churchworldservice.
org), a joint Christian ministry
organization of 37 different de-
nominations, as well as the work
of local food banks to combat
hunger here in South Jersey.
The walk will leave from the
First United Methodist Church
(at Camden and Pleasant Valley
avenues). Participants should
register and sign-in at 1:30 p.m.
Water and bathroom facilities
will be available at checkpoints
along the walk, and there will be
refreshments for the walkers
when they return to the
Methodist church. The five-mile
scenic course that walkers will
follow through Moorestown (or
optional shorter 3-mile and 1-mile
routes for those individuals who
prefer a shorter course) is meant
to symbolize the reality that so
many people in the world face
who must walk many miles each
day to obtain food and drinking
water.
For further information, please
contact Linda Toepel, this years
event coordinator (from First
United Methodist Church) at
ptoepel@comcast.net, 235-0883 or

P.C. in Haddonfield
The publishers of Super
Lawyers magazine designate
Super Lawyers and Rising
Stars based on a point-scored se-
lection process, with New Jersey
results printed each spring in
New Jersey Monthly. The Super
Lawyers selection process in-
volves nomination by colleagues,
research by Super Lawyers staff,
and peer evaluation by top attor-
neys in each of more than 70
practice areas. Only 5 percent of
lawyers in a given state are select-
ed for the Super Lawyers designa-
tion.
Rising Stars are age 40 and
younger or practicing 10 years or
less. They are selected based on
nominations by colleagues and
research by Super Lawyers staff.
No more than 2.5 percent of
lawyers in a state are selected for
the Rising Stars designation.
In all, 36 attorneys from four
Archer & Greiner offices are rec-
ognized as New Jersey Super
Lawyers, and New Jersey Rising
Stars for 2013.
Demmerly is recognized as a
Super Lawyer in the practice area
of Estate Planning & Probate.
Demmerly provides general busi-
ness representation and, together
with the various departments of
the firm, provides corporate, liti-
gation, real estate, tax and other
legal services for clients. He also
specializes in planning for closely
held and fami-
ly businesses,
estate plan-
ning, estate
administra-
tion and estate
and gift tax.
Muccifori is
recognized as
a Super
Lawyer in the
practice area
of Business Litigation. Muccifori
has been litigating business and
employment disputes of all types
for 25 years. He has gained na-
tionwide experience in drafting,
negotiating, counseling and liti-
gating on behalf of employers,
employees and others in the trade
secret and restrictive covenant
context.
Banfe is recognized as a Rising
Star in the practice area of Fami-
ly Law. Banfe has had significant
experience with various types of
matrimonial matters including
complex as well as more modest
marital estates.
He concentrates his practice
entirely upon all areas of family
law including divorce, alimony,
child support, equitable distribu-
tion, custody, parenting time,
prenuptial agreements, and
domestic violence and college
contribution issues in both pre-
judgment and post-judgment mat-
ters.
