He was assassinated by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE ) on May 21, 1991. Rajiv Gandhi was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1991. Gopalakrishna Gokhale Gokhale founded the Servants of India Society in 1905. He was an outstanding Indian statesman and political guru of Mahatma Gandhi. He was the Congress president in 1905.
