A column section is built up from 4 L5 x 5 x 5/8 angles as shown in the figure. The effective length of the
column is 30 and all steel is A572-50. The column is subjected to a dead load of 100

. The column will be single laced, and the lacing will be bolted to the angles with fully tensioned
bolts. The column measures 20 out-to-out on the angles in each direction. Determine whether the
column is adequate to support the given loading.


Solution:

**Note that the check for Torsional Buckling has been omitted here
because it is an unlikely limit state, but in all correctness should be
checked since this is a doubly-symmetric cross-section.
