Tessellated Surface I Tessellated Surfaces use the node positions to build a surface. I Mesh quality is not of concern except where severe curvature must be captured. I FEM - Modify/Mesh/Sew tool sews gaps of a tri meshed region for the purpose of building a tessellated surface.

Geometry Characteristics I Geometry characteristics which effect creation of nite elements include Parameterization, Connectivity, Topology. I Parametrics of geometry dene a local system in which any point within that geometric entity can be located. I Connectivity denes geometry orientations such as surface normals and edge order. I Topology describes the adjacency relationships between geometric entities.

Topology
I Topology denes adjacency relationships. Shared edges of a surface are termed topologically congruent if they occupy the same model space and use the same vertices. I Topological congruency determines whether coincident nodes are created on common boundaries. I Verify/Surface/Boundaries checks for free and manifold edges. If free edges exist internal to the model then these entities are topologically incongruent. Geometry - Verify/Surface/Boundary

FEM Tools I MSC.PATRAN has many features for creating Finite Element Models
Meshing tools Iso mesher Tradional Mapped Mesher for parametric geometry. Creates 1, 2 or 3 dimensional elements Surface Mesher for trimmed or simple surfaces Meshes complex surfaces with an arbitrary number of boundary edges and internal holes. Automatic Solid Mesher to generate Tetrahedron Elements Dene element densities and bias Dene additional control points and edges to the mesher Global edge length, auto hard points Transforming create copies of existing elements or nodes, i.e. translating, rotating, mirroring. Sweeping creates elements by generating the next higher order element from base elements. e.g. 1D element generates 2D element. Move, offset, edit, project or change attributes.

Assembly Meshing for Parasolid Solid Assembly (concluded)

If solids are intersecting and the intersecting volume is small (<1% total volume) then meshing will continue using assembly meshing after outputting a warning message non-mating solids If solids are separated by more than the parasolid tolerance, the no shared geometry will be found. The solids will be meshed as separate solids If all criteria are met, a conguent mesh is generated across the solids at the touching faces. No equivalencing is required

Summary
I MSC/PATRAN provides many tools to generate a nite element model. I In creation of a FEM, more than one method must usually be employed. I An understanding of the geometry tools and characteristics of the geometry will make meshing easier. I Mesh control tools are tools to helps provide for the desired mesh prior to meshing. I Editing tools allow the user to modify a mesh for the desired result after meshing.
