a college campus, and kids? Lots of serious fun and active learning!

The College for Kids program at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City, Michigan, stimulates and nurtures the minds of young people ages 317 with 188 learning options. The 8-week program is designed for highly motivated students to explore an area of interest; parents should read descriptions carefully to find the best fit. Most classes are formatted in a week of 4 or 5 half days. One week, Kids on Campus week July 22-26, offers an optional supervised lunch break (bring your brown bag lunch) and lets you choose morning and afternoon classes for full days of fun (see page 18).

Choose a character to role play and make yourself a costume. Would you tame a dragon as a pet? Decide as you make your own dragon. Build your castle and a catapult to defend it. Get off to a great start playing the piano. Youll learn the names of the notes, and how to count and play rhythms. Youll even write your own song. Youre hiking and your friend sprains an ankle and theres a storm coming! You need shelter, but none can be found. Well listen to great stories and tales as we learn to construct different types of shelters from materials available to us in nature. If you like forts, and more importantly, like to build them, this adventure is for you! You will work together to build a shelter large enough for the whole group! Bring a water bottle. Register early
Registration is easyregister online or fill out a registration form, then phone, fax, mail, or stop by the NMC Extended Education (EES) office. Registration begins April 12 and continues throughout the summer. Take as many classes as you like. For additional registration forms, make copies or download them from the website. Full payment is due at the time of registration by credit card/debit card, check, or cash. Please register by June 10 or at least seven days prior to the start date of the course. Early enrollment is encouraged, as many classes fill quickly. Some classes with low enrollment after June 11 may have to be cancelled. Upon receipt of registration, students are enrolled in requested classes. Please note the dates, times, and locations of your classes. You will be notified only if changes occur or a class is filled. Written confirmation will be sent if you include a stamped, self-addressed envelope.

How to use ONLINE registration Remember that you must use your childs NMC ID and PASSWORD when using online registration, not your own. Every child who has ever taken a class at NMC has an NMC ID. If your child has taken classes before at NMC, but you dont know his/her login information, contact the NMC Technology Help Desk, (231) 995-3020. Once they verify your childs identity, they can give you your childs NMC ID and Password. If your child is a brand new student, an NMC ID and Password are assigned when you create a new account. If you cant remember whether your child has taken classes before, you may call the Extended Education office at (231) 9951700 during business hours. Your credit card is charged upon completion of the registration process. If you do not pay at the time of registration, the class(es) in your cart will be dropped.

Refunds A 100% refund will be given if a request is made (call 995-1700) at least five business days prior to the class start date or if a class is cancelled. If you must drop a class 2 to 4 business days prior to the class start date, you are eligible for a 50% credit toward another College for Kids class, valid for one year. Classes dropped the business day prior to class (usually the Friday before) are not eligible for refund or partial credit. See full refund policy at nmc.edu/kids.

Financial aid scholarships Limited funds are available to assist families meeting low-income requirements. To receive an application, please call Extended Education at (231) 995-1700. 1. Financial aid awards typically cover half the cost of each class for a maximum of three classes per child (as funds allow). Awarded amount does not exceed $60 per class.

Parent checklist
Confirm that your child is the appropriate age/grade level for each class. Inform us at the time of registration if your child has a physical, medical, or learning need so we can assure they have a good experience. Make sure the teacher and your child have a good phone number to contact you. Walk younger children to and from the classroom door.

Drop off no earlier than 10 minutes ahead of class time. NMC doesnt have staffing resources to supervise children who are left early or picked up late. Please be prompt for pick up. Inform the teacher if someone else will be picking up your child. Discuss pick-up arrangements with your child prior to class. Let children know that appropriate behavior is expected. Parents will be contacted if a child is disruptive.

Help your child (grades K8) stay on top of language arts and/or math skills this summer with GRASPguided at-home programs to help children retain critical skills. Whether you are home or on the road, these easy-touse lessons go with you. After registering for the reading and/ or math program, parents attend an introductory session in May to meet the teachers, pick up materials, and learn how to help your student make this a successful experience.
