LGBT climate on university campuses as told by alumni were pairing
with current students to tell their stories. This week: Bob Witeck and
the University of Virginia. Next in the series: Jeff Trammell returns to
William and Mary as rector.
In 1973, Bette Midler ounced out of the Continental
Baths in Manhattan to record the chart-topping gay
anthem, You Gotta Have Friends, but for Bob Witeck,
it didnt come with an instruction manual. With nary a hint
of gay life on the campus of the University of Virginia, he
sought help in the library.
There were maybe 10 titles, each of them clinical or
scary, Witeck recalled. None gave me a sense of hope,
promise or acceptance in any way. So, he buried himself
in his studies, anti-war activism and marathon bridge
tournaments. He could declare and partner in bridge, but
seeking one in life was too risky. Jesse Helms and Anita
Bryant were hunting and killing gay civil rights wherever
they could. Witeck is from an entire generation of Friends
of Dorothy and the gay, straight-A student was asexual.
Such was the state of gay life on Americas college
campuses for many closeted students 40 years ago.
Today, brimming with hope, promise and acceptance,
Brendan Maupin Wynn walks the same UVA campus that
Witeck did four decades earlier only hes running for
ofce, signing petitions for any number of progressive
causes, and when the mood strikes him, he takes a man
on a date.
I only worry whether my date has a winning smile
never how well be treated at an event, he says. This
straight-A student is gay and makes no apologies for it.
When he learned of this project for the Washington
Blade and that he was being paired with Bob Witeck,
Wynn responded, Is this the Bob Witeck whos
the Washington PR magician? The answer is yes,
Brendan, and that magician did a disappearing act when
he was in your shoes. Contrasting the two Cavs is the

Lesbian lawmaker sees
hope for ENDA vote

The lesbian lawmaker who made history last
year by becoming the rst openly gay member
of the U.S. Senate is about to mark another
milestone: her rst 100 days in ofce.
Saturday will mark 100 days in ofce for Tammy
Baldwin, who was sworn in as the junior senator
from Wisconsin on Jan. 3.
In an interview with the Washington Blade this
week, Baldwin said nothing has surprised her since
she took ofce in the Senate because the upper
chamber of Congress is so obviously different
from the House, where she served for 14 years.
On the home front, the difference is between
representing a whole state and representing a
slice of that state thats recongured every 10
years, Baldwin said. Thats a big difference,
and I come from a big state, a state with a really
interesting political history. And so, thats really,
really exciting for me personally to represent the
whole state of Wisconsin.

Will Va. attorney general take
case to Supreme Court?

The Fourth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals
in Richmond issued an order on Monday
denying a petition by Virginia Attorney
General Ken Cuccinelli asking the full
15-judge court to reconsider a decision
by a three-judge panel last month that
overturned the states sodomy law.
In an action that surprised some court
observers, the order says none of the
courts judges requested a poll among
themselves to determine which, if any of
them, favored Cuccinellis request for an
en banc rehearing of the sodomy case
by the courts 15 active judges and one
senior judge.
Under court rules, if no judge calls for a
poll or vote on the issue, the petition for a
rehearing is automatically denied in what,
in effect, becomes a unanimous decision.
Among the judges that chose not to
approve a rehearing was Judge Albert
Diaz, who wrote the dissent in the
three-judge panels 2-1 ruling declaring
Virginias Crimes Against Nature
statute unconstitutional. The statute
classies sodomy between consenting
adults, gay or straight, as a crime.
Its a pretty resounding rejection,
said Claire Gastanaga, executive
director of the ACLU of Virginia, which
led a friend of the court brief urging the
three-judge panel to overturn the state
sodomy law. There really wasnt any
interest in doing this at all by anybody.
Caroline Gibson, Cuccinellis deputy
communications director, didnt respond
to a question from the Blade about
whether Cuccinelli plans to petition the
U.S. Supreme Court to take the case,
which would be the last remaining step
to challenge the appeals court ruling
overturning the sodomy law.
We would hope that they wouldnt,
Gastanaga said. We would hope that
they would understand what they need
to do is work to get this law off the
books. But I wouldnt be surprised if
they led a petition for cert.
Gastanaga was referring to the
process for taking a case before the
Supreme Court through the ling of a
petition for a Writ of Certiorari. At least
four of the nine justices on the high
court must approve certiorari or cert
in order for the court to accept a case
for consideration on the merits.
The March 12 ruling by the three-
judge panel of the Fourth Circuit
appeals court overturned a lower court
decision upholding the conviction of
a 47-year-old man charged in 2004
with soliciting a 17-year-old woman to
engage in oral sex on grounds that the
sodomy statute is unconstitutional. No
sexual encounter took place, according
to court records.
Cuccinellis ofce argued in its 21-
page petition for a rehearing that the
Supreme Courts 2003 Lawrence v. Texas
decision overturning state sodomy
laws didnt apply to cases involving
minors. However, Fourth Circuit Court
of Appeals Judge Robert King, who
wrote the majority opinion, said the
Lawrence decision rendered the Virginia
sodomy statute facially or completely
unconstitutional.
As we stated last week, this case has
nothing to do with sexual orientation or
private sexual acts between consenting
adults, Gibson told the Blade in an
email on Tuesday. Its about using
current law to protect a 17-year-old
girl from a 47-year-old sexual predator.
The attorney general is committed
to protecting Virginias children from
predators who attempt to exploit them
and rob them of their childhood.
Gibson said Cuccinelli agreed with
the dissenting judge that the defendant
in the case wasnt entitled to relief from
the three-judge panel of the fourth
circuit appeals court and the full court
should have been given an opportunity
to decide the matter.

A privately operated shelter for
homeless women funded by the D.C.
government is violating the D.C.
Human Rights Act by refusing to admit
transgender women unless they provide
documentation of a legal name
change or gender reassignment surgery,
according to separate complaints against
the facility by two transgender women.
In a lawsuit led April 5 in D.C. Superior
Court and a complaint led with the D.C.
Ofce of Human Rights on March 22, the
two women charge that employees at
the John L. Young Womens Shelter at
119 D Street, N.W. said they could not
be admitted because of their status as
transgender women.
The shelter is located three blocks from
the U.S. Capitol in a large building that
houses shelters operated by other groups,
including one of the citys largest shelters
run by the Community for Creative Non-
Violence, a group that has advocate for
the homeless since the 1980s.
An attorney with the D.C. Trans
Coalition led the lawsuit on behalf
of Lakiesha Washington against New
Hope Ministries, Inc. of Woodbridge,
Va., which owns and operates the John
L. Young Womens Shelter.
The lawsuit says Washington, who was
homeless, attempted to gain admission
to the shelter on April 3, when the
lawsuit says the alleged discriminatory
action took place.
An unidentied female employee
at the shelter asked Washington, Are
you a woman or a man, the lawsuit
says. Ms. Washington replied, Im a
transgender woman. The employee
then asked Ms. Washington if she
had any documentation, to which Ms.
Washington replied that she did not.
The lawsuit says the employee
then told Washington, We dont do
transgenders here. You have to leave.
In a separate discrimination
complaint led with the Ofce of
Human Rights, D.C. Trans Coalition
member Andy Bowen says a shelter
employee provided more details when
Bowen asked about the facilitys policy
regarding transgender women in a Feb.

The respondent stated that I would
need to provide proof of a sex change,
Bowen said in her complaint with
the OHR. When I asked what would
constitute proof, respondent answered
that I would need to furnish documents
of a name change or proof of surgery.
Bowen told the Blade on Monday
that she initiated her phone call to the
shelter after learning that the John
Young Shelter has a history of refusing
service to transgender women.
John Shetterly, executive director of
New Hope Ministries, told the Blade on
Wednesday that his organization is taking
immediate steps to make structural
changes to better accommodate
transgender women and plans to hold a
special staff training session to address
transgender-related issues.
Because of the layout of the John
Young Center, which has a communal
bathroom and shower area and one
large sleeping area, we just didnt know
how to appropriately accommodate
them, he said.
Shetterly said he was reaching out to
the D.C. Department of Human Services
(DHS) to arrange for the bathroom and
shower modications. A contract New
Hope Ministries has with an umbrella
group that funds the shelter through
a separate city contract prevents New
Hope Ministries from doing any repair
work or making structural changes,
Shetterly said.

RICHMOND, Va.Virginia
gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe
on Saturday reafrmed his support of
marriage rights for same-sex couples
during Equality Virginias annual dinner
that took place at the Greater Richmond
Convention Center.
It was two months ago that I came
out for marriage equality, he said,
referring to the February Google chat
during which he publicly announced
his position. I came out early because
I thought it was the right thing to do.
McAuliffe, who is the former chair of
the Democratic National Committee,
said the rst thing he would do as
governor is sign an executive order that
would ban discrimination based on any
issue. He also sought to differentiate
himself from Attorney General Ken
Cuccinelli who last week asked the
4th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in
Richmond to review a three-judge
panels decision in March that struck
down Virginias sodomy law.
I will make sure that every single
individual in the commonwealth of
Virginia is treated fair and equal,
McAuliffe said.
U.S. Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) who
publicly backed marriage rights for
same-sex couples last month before
the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral
arguments in cases that challenge
the constitutionality of Californias
Proposition 8 and the Defense of
Marriage Act, said he was proud to
lend my voice on that important issue.
He credited his three daughters with
helping him come to support nuptials
for gays and lesbians.
Any committed couple ought to have
protection under the law, said Warner,
who in 2005 became the rst Virginia
governor to sign an executive order that
banned anti-gay discrimination against
state employees. No one ought to have
their relationship viewed as second class.

Richmond Circuit Court Judge
Tracy Thorne-Begland, who in January
became the commonwealths rst openly
gay jurist after the Republican-controlled
House of Delegates initially rejected his
nomination last May, also attended.
The dinner took place less than two
months after a House of Delegates
subcommittee tabled a bill that would
have banned discrimination against
LGBT state employees.
Sometimes Virginia is not always
known for its steps forward, Warner
said. Weve seen actions in the General
Assembly over the last couple of years
that at times have not made Virginia the
kind of leading light, but instead the
butt of Jon Stewart jokes.
A Virginia House of Delegates
subcommittee in January killed a
measure introduced by state Del. Scott
Surovell (D-Fairfax) that would have
repealed the 2006 Marshall-Newman
Amendment that dened marriage as
between a man and a woman in the
commonwealths constitution.
Equality Virginia Executive Director
James Parrish and others noted
throughout the dinner, however, a
majority of Americans now support
nuptials for gays and lesbians.
Tonight we have reason to
celebrate, he said. LGBT Americans
are more visible than ever before.
Virginia is ripe for change.
Newark (N.J.) Mayor Cory Booker also
referenced his own evolution on same-
sex marriage during his keynote address.
This is the United States of America,
he said. Its not United Airlines where
some of you can sit in rst class and some
people are back in coach. You cant have
two types of citizenship in this country.

Del. marriage bill imminent
Multiple sources told the Blade this week that a bill to legalize same-sex
marriage in Delaware was expected to be introduced soon, possibly by

In a related development, a spokesperson for the Sussex County [Del.]
Republican Committee this week denied a report that its executive committee
approved a non-binding resolution that called for the dismissal of the state
GOPs gay executive director over his support of same-sex marriage.
The News-Journal reported committee members approved the resolution
against John Fluharty during their monthly meeting in Georgetown on Monday.
Sherwood Duke Brooks, spokesperson for the Sussex County Republican
Committee, conrmed to the Washington Blade that committeeman Rob
Arlett introduced a resolution that states the Delaware Republican Party
stands for traditional family values and all hired representatives of that
organization shall publicly reect that view.
It does not specically identify Fluharty.
That was the extent of the non-binding resolution offered and voted upon
in the afrmative, he said. To me this resolution seems analogous to the
idea that if you are an executive with General Motors you dont drive around
in a Mustang or a BMW. That was the extent of it.
The committee approved the resolution less than a month after Fluharty
highlighted his personal support of nuptials for gays and lesbians during an
exclusive interview with the Blade at an Equality Delaware fundraiser in Wilmington.
Fluharty declined to comment, but Brooks said the resolution has nothing
to do with his sexual orientation.

New partnership involves
public, private entities
The U.S. Agency for International
Development on Monday unveiled a
public-private partnership designed to
promote LGBT rights around the world.
USAID will work with the Swedish
International Development Corporation
Agency, the Astraea Lesbian Foundation
for Justice, the Gay and Lesbian Victory
Institute, the Williams Institute at the UCLA
School of Law and Olivia Companies on the
LGBT Global Development Partnership
that will contribute $11 million over the
next four years to advocacy groups in
Ecuador, Honduras, Guatemala and other
developing countries. The Gill Foundation
and the Levi Strauss Foundation will also
participate in the initiative that seeks to
expand the capacity of local LGBT rights
organizations, further engage out people
in their respective countries political
processes and gather information on the
impact of discrimination based on sexual
orientation and gender identity and
expression.
This partnership leverages the
nancial resources and skills of each
partner to further inclusive development
and increase respect for the human
rights of LGBT people around the
world, said Claire Lucas, senior adviser
of the USAID Ofce of Innovation and
Development Alliances during a panel
at the Ronald Reagan Building in D.C.
It can be a real game-changer in the
advancement of LGBT human rights.
Anne-Charlotte Malm of the Swedish
International Development Corporation
Agency echoed Lucas.
We all, by being here today, share
the common vision of a society without
discrimination or harassment and equal
rights and opportunities for everybody
regardless of sexual orientation, gender
identity or gender expression, she
said. This partnership is a step toward
this tradition.
More than 80 countries and territories
continue to criminalize homosexuality
and seven of them impose the death
penalty upon anyone found guilty of
same-sex sexual relations.
Only 19 countries ban anti-
transgender discrimination the State
Department has spoken out against
anti-LGBT violence in Honduras,
Jamaica, Uganda, Zimbabwe and other
nations in recent years.
Argentina, Canada, Spain and South
Africa are among the dozen countries
that currently allow same-sex marriage.
Then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in
2011 proclaimed in a speech she delivered
in Geneva to commemorate International
Human Rights Day that gay rights are
human rights. President Obama on the
same day directed government agencies
that implement American foreign policy
to promote LGBT rights in the countries
in which they work.
The planning for the partnership
was already underway when the White
House issued its directive, but Lucas
said it really helped us push this over
the nish line.
Im humbled by the challenges that
you have faced and the sorrows and
traumas youre still sorting out, Maura
ONeill, director of USAIDs Ofce of
Innovation and Development Alliances,
told the LGBT rights advocates and
others who attended the panel. Im
awed by the amazing lives that each
and every one of you have created and
the path you have called your own. This
partnership will help millions of others
walk in your proud shoes.
The partnerships rst training will
take place in Bogot, Colombia, from
May 30-June 2.
The Victory Institute and Astraea
will work with Colombia Diversa,
a countrywide advocacy group, to
encourage LGBT Colombians to become
involved in the political process. Bogot
City Councilor Angelica Lozano; Blanca
Durn, mayor of the Colombian capitals
Chapinero district and Tatiana Pieros,
a trans woman whom Bogot Mayor
Gustavo Petro appointed last year to run
the citys social welfare agency are among
those expected to attend.
Were pretty excited about this
and thrilled that we get to be out
there helping LGBT leaders in other
countries, said Victory Institute CEO
Chuck Wolfe.
N.Y. diocese removes gay man from parish
A New York Catholic diocese in January removed a gay man from public
duties at his Long Island parish after he married his same-sex partner.
Nicholas Coppola has attended Mass at St. Anthonys Roman Catholic
Church in Oceanside, N.Y., since he moved from New York City four years
ago. He has worked as an altar server, lector, religious education teacher and
visitation minister for homebound parishioners. Coppola was also a member
of a ministry that comforted parishioners as they prepared to hold funerals
for their loved ones.
Coppola and his partner of nearly a decade married in October two
days before Superstorm Sandy inundated Oceanside and other communities
along Long Islands South Shore.
Bishop William Murphy of the Diocese of Rockville Centre, which
encompasses Nassau and Suffolk Counties on Long Island, on Dec. 5
received an anonymous letter that detailed Coppolas work within the parish,
but highlighted his sexual orientation.
The problem is that he is a homosexual, the letter reads. He was recently
married to another man. He does not hide this or keep it silent.
Okla. lawmakers pass DOMA resolution
OKLAHOMA CITY The Oklahoma House of Representatives on Monday
approved a resolution in support of the Defense of Marriage Act.
The 84-0 vote took place less than two weeks after the U.S. Supreme Court
heard oral arguments in cases that challenge the constitutionality of DOMA
and Californias Proposition 8. The Associated Press reported openly gay
state Rep. Kay Floyd (D-Oklahoma City) and more than a dozen other House
Democrats walked out of the chamber before the vote took place.
The Arkansas House of Representatives late last month also approved a
resolution in support of DOMA that then-President Bill Clinton signed into
law in 1996.
The Supreme Court is expected to announce its ruling on the DOMA and
Prop 8 cases in June.
Mont. lawmakers poised to repeal sodomy law
HELENA, Mont. Montana lawmakers this week are poised to repeal the
states sodomy law, the AP reported.
The state House of Representatives on Tuesday approved Senate Bill 107
by a 64-36 vote. It faces a second vote that was likely to have taken place on
Wednesday before Gov. Steve Bullock signed it into law.
Its not about encouraging a lifestyle, gay state Rep. Bryce Bennett
(D-Missoula) said before his fellow lawmakers approved SB 107 that state
Sen. Tom Facey (D-Missoula) introduced. Its simply about respecting privacy
between two adults.
Even though the Montana Supreme Court in 1997 ruled against the law ,
Republicans have led efforts to repeal it.
The U.S. Supreme Court in 2003 found existing state sodomy laws
unconstitutional in its landmark Lawrence v. Texas ruling.
Marriage vote expected in R.I. Senate
PROVIDENCE, R.I. Rhode Island Senate President M. Teresa Paiva-Weed
told the Providence Journal on April 8 she expects her chamber will vote on
a same-sex marriage bill by the end of the month.
I feel very condent that the issue will be fully debated on the oor of the
Senate at some point in April, she said.
Paiva-Weeds comments come on the heels of the March 21 hearing on the
measure that took place in the Senate Judiciary Committee. The state House
of Representatives in January overwhelmingly approved it.
Gov. Lincoln Chafee has said he will sign into law if it passes in the Senate.

Carney says political
turnaround mirrors
views of voters

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney
said on Monday the country deserves
credit for the recent trend of U.S. senators
endorsing marriage equality when asked if
President Obama was responsible for the
sudden wave of support.
In response to a question from the
Washington Blade on whether Obama
deserves credit for setting a trend with
his announcement in favor of marriage
equality in May that allowed other public
ofcials to follow suit, Carney redirected
responsibility to the American people.
The country deserves credit, Carney
said. Its been a remarkable evolution
and represents an embrace of the basic
principles of equality that the president
feels strongly about, that Americans
across the country feel strongly about.
And I think I can safely say that the
president hopes it continues.
But Carney declined to criticize the
Democratic U.S. senators who havent
come out for marriage equality now
down to just Sens. Mary Landrieu (D-La.),
Mark Pryor (D-Ark.) and Joe Manchin
(D-W.Va.) when asked if they should
make similar announcements.
Obviously, each individual
whether an elected lawmaker or anyone
else makes this evaluation, decision
himself or herself, Carney said. So the
president spoke about his views in that
interview that you made reference to,
and other lawmakers have been doing
so recently as there have been other
issues related to this being debated
and discussed. But he was not and
is not in a position to pass judgment
on others, [but] simply to say what he
believes very strongly.
Carney made his remarks just moments
before Sen. Tim Johnson (D-S.D.) issued
a statement declaring his support for
marriage equality, making him the 54th
U.S. senator to come out in support of
marriage rights for gay couples.
After lengthy consideration, my views
have evolved sufciently to support
marriage equality legislation, Johnson
said. This position doesnt require any
religious denomination to alter any of
its tenets; it simply forbids government
from discrimination regarding who can
marry whom.
Just last week, six senators came
out in favor of marriage equality:
Sens. Bob Casey (D-Pa.), Tom Carper
(D-Del.), Mark Kirk (R-Ill.), Bill Nelson
(D-Fla.), Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.) and
Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.). Others whove
recently made similar announcements
are Sens. Rob Portman (R-Ohio), Claire
McCaskill (D-Mo.), Mark Warner (D-
Va.) and Kay Hagan (D-N.C.). Sens.
Tim Kaine (D-Va.) and Mark Begich
(D-Alaska) also conrmed they support
marriage equality.
Two of the remaining three Democratic
senators who havent come out for
marriage equality Landrieu and Pryor
have recently made statements on
the issue. The Blade is unaware of any
recent public statements Manchin has
made on the subject.
In a recent interview with CNN, Landrieu
suggested that while she personally
believes same-sex couples should be able
to marry saying people should love
who they love and marry who they want to
marry shes unable to ofcially take that
position because her state has passed a
constitutional amendment banning same-
sex marriage. Landrieu is up for re-election
next year in a state thats consistently red
in presidential elections.
My state has a very strong
constitutional amendment not only
against gay marriage but against gay
partnerships, Landrieu said. So Im
looking at the people of Louisiana trying
to represent their interests, she said.
LGBT groups join march as
some say bill incomplete
Immigration Equality Executive
Director Rachel Tiven this week said
she does not expect same-sex couples
will be included in the comprehensive
immigration reform bill a bipartisan
group of senators could introduce by
the end of the week.
We are not expecting LGBT families
to be included in the Gang of 8 bill,
she told the Washington Blade during a
conference call ahead of a rally in support
of comprehensive immigration reform on
Wednesday that was expected to draw
tens of thousands of people to the U.S.
Capitol. That in our minds means that of
course the bill is incomplete.
Tivens comments echoed later in
the week by Sen. Tammy Baldwin come
roughly three months after President
Obama publicly unveiled an immigration
reform proposal that includes bi-national
gay couples. Secretary of Homeland
Security Janet Napolitano in February
told the Senate Judiciary Committee
the White House supports a provision
that would allow gays and lesbians to
sponsor their foreign-born partners for
immigration purposes.
New York Congressman Jerrold
Nadler on Feb. 5 introduced the bill
in the House of Representatives with
U.S. Reps. Charles Dent (R-Pa.) and
Richard Hanna (R-N.Y.) as co-sponsors.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi
(D-Calif,) House Minority Whip Steny
Hoyer (D-Md.,) Illinois Congressman
Luis Gutierrez and U.S. Reps. Jared
Polis (D-Colo.,) David Cicilline (D-R.I.,)
Sean Patrick Maloney (D-N.Y.,) Kyrsten
Sinema (D-Ariz.,) Mark Pocan (D-Wis.)
and Mark Takano (D-Calif.) are among
those who support UAFA.
Vermont Sen. Patrick Leahy a few days
later announced he reintroduced UAFA
in his chamber with U.S. Sen. Susan
Collins (R-Maine) as a co-sponsor.
Nadler acknowledged to the Blade
on Monday it appears unlikely that the
Senates initial immigration text will
include LGBT-specic language.
This is disappointing but not
particularly surprising, he said.
Tiven said she remains hopeful
members of the Senate Judiciary
Committee will revisit the issue once they
begin to debate the Gang of 8 bill.
We expect and we hope that senators
on the committee will allow a full and
open amendment process that provides
an opportunity to x the aws in the base
bill of which the exclusion of Uniting
American Families Act is one, she said.
Nadler took a similar tone as he
expressed Leahys efforts to include UAFA
as an amendment to the bill in committee
before it reaches the Senate oor.
I will ght like hell to ensure that
LGBT-inclusive language remains in any
House and Senate conference report,
Nadler told the Blade. The ultimate
goal is, of course, not how we pass
LGBT-inclusive immigration reform, but
that we make certain that such a bill
lands on the presidents desk.
The Human Rights Campaign was
among the LGBT advocacy groups
that planned to take part in a rally for
comprehensive immigration reform in
D.C. on Wednesday.
Were going to have terric
participation from a really broad array
of LGBT and LGBT immigrant groups,
Tiven said.

thousands of people from across the
country to attend the march, which

benets could remain
problematic after ruling

While many same-sex couples
throughout the country have high
hopes that a U.S. Supreme Court ruling
striking down the Defense of Marriage
Act would mean their marriages would
nally have legal status in the eyes of the
federal government, certain problems
may persist even if the court kills the law.
Depending on the scope of a
Supreme Court ruling against Section
3 of DOMA, areas of the law in which
couples may continue to face challenges
include Social Security benets
especially if a couple moves to a state
that doesnt recognize their marriages
as well as spousal benets when one
party of the couple is a member of the
military, although the immigration issue
preventing bi-national couples from
staying together in the United States is
expected to cease immediately.
Mary Bonauto, civil rights director for
Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders,
said one issue in a post-DOMA world
is Social Security benets if a same-sex
couple marries in one state and moves
to another where their union isnt
recognized. The survivor benets given
to spouses upon the death of their
loved ones is among the more than
1,000 federal benets withheld from
married gay couples under DOMA.
Say you are married in Massachusetts
... and you apply for Social Security in
Massachusetts, there would be no doubt
with DOMA gone, that your spouse is a
spouse for Social Security purposes,
Bonauto said. However, should you
relocate to Florida and apply for Social
Security benets there, its more of a
problem because Social Security law
is going to look at the validity of the
marriage at the time you apply for
benets, so your state of residence at
the time you apply really matters.
Bonauto added the aftermath of a
ruling striking down DOMA may create
a patchwork that in some situations
would make same-sex marriage
dependent on their state validity. Ironing
out this patchwork, she said, would take
either more litigation, legislation or
advocacy within the administration to
make changes.
The overwhelming majority of
federal programs dont specify what
state law applies, so it may just be for
some situations, a matter of some
guidance coming for the agencies
that say whether youre married for a
particular benet, Bonauto added.
Thats a very practical nuts-and-bolts
thing that, you know, we dont have
the luxury of worrying about right now
because DOMA is still on the books.
Susan Silber, a lesbian Takoma Park-
based lawyer who specializes in family
law for gay couples, said a ruling could
affect gay couples differently if the
court strikes down DOMA but leaves
the constitutional right to marry in the
case against Californias Proposition 8
an open question.
Lets say a couple was married for
30 years, but because they couldnt get
married until two years ago, it would
look technically like theyve only been
married for two years, Silber said. But
when theyre now dividing up their
property, will courts say, Oh youve only
been married two years, theres not a
lot of marital property to buy? or will
the court recognize that longer-term
relationships deserve some recognition
and do some kind of equity based on
the non-technical part.
The Human Rights Campaign didnt
respond to requests for comment on
lingering issues for married gay couples.
But the general agreement is that the
Respect for Marriage Act, legislation
designed to repeal DOMA, would address
lingering problems regarding state validity
because of the certainty clause in the
bill. Under that provision, gay couples that
legally marry in one jurisdiction would be
assured federal benets even if they move
to another state that doesnt recognize
same-sex marriage. The Respect for
Marriage Act has yet to be introduced in
the 113th Congress.
Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) said
during a Blade interview on Monday
that she thinks the Respect for Marriage
Act could see additional co-sponsors
in the wake of so many legislators
coming out for marriage equality, but
certain bills may have to be rewritten in
the aftermath of a court ruling striking
DOMA before going forward.
I think that trend is a very positive
one, and, yet, once the Supreme Court
in June announces its decision in
these two cases, were going to have
to read those decisions very carefully,
understand their reach, impact and then
go about the task of looking at their
impact on pending legislation, Baldwin
said. So it may mean that certain things
need to be re-written. And that will be a
joyous task if we made progress, but we
still have a little bit more to go.

or Lambda Legal, was optimistic
adjustments could be made, saying
the federal government has had to
determine previously whether to
recognize certain marriages and
disputed any notion advanced by
DOMA proponents that overturning the
law would create a legal mess.
Its very important that it be understood
that that argument is baseless, as this issue
has always existed without creating undue
burdens for the federal government,
Davidson said. For example, some states
allow rst cousins, or uncles and nieces
and aunts and nephews, to marry, and
some other states will not allow couples
that closely related to marry and will not
recognize marriages like those entered in
other states as valid for purposes of their
own state law.
Another piece of legislation may be
necessary to address the benets issue
for gay service members with same-sex
spouses. Sections of U.S. code governing
benets for U.S. service members dene
marriage as one man, one woman
independent of DOMA. Titles 10, 32 and
37 are controlled by DOMA in terms of
their denition of marriage, but Title 38,
which addresses veterans benets, denes
spouse and surviving spouse in
similar terms and restricts the denitions of
persons to the opposite sex.
Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), who
sponsors legislation known as Charlie
Morgan Act that would afford benets
to gay troops, said in a statement to the
Blade that shes prepared to push forward
with the bill in the event that the Supreme
Court ruling doesnt address this issue.
The Charlie Morgan Act would amend
the denition of spouse in the federal
code in four areas and in turn grant
same-sex military couples many benets
that theyve rightfully earned, Shaheen
said. Depending on how the Supreme
Court rules on DOMA, legislation like
this could still be necessary to ensure
fairness and equality for all our men and
women serving in uniform. Regardless
of how the Supreme Court rules, I will
continue to work with my colleagues
on behalf of our LGBT servicemen and
women, and their families, because no
one should be denied benets due to
their sexual orientation.
There may be other difculties as well.
A blog posting Monday from National
Public Radios Michelle Andrews
speculates that married gay couples
may have trouble covering their families
with company insurance, although
many businesses are pre-emptively
addressing the issue.
If a same-sex couple both lives and
works in the District there may not
be insurance difculties, Andrews
writes. But what if one of them works
in Virginia, where same-sex marriage
isnt recognized? If a Virginia-based
employer doesnt voluntarily provide
benets to same-sex spouses, the
employee might not be able to insure
a spouse even though theyre legally
married in the state where they live.
But one issue thats expected to
immediately go away in the inability of
gay Americans to sponsor their spouses
for residency in the United States via a
marriage-based green card application.
Each time when asked to address the
issue, the Obama administration has
cited Section 3 of DOMA and only
Section 3 of DOMA as the reason
why sponsorship of a foreign spouse is
unavailable for gay couples.

goal of this column and that progress
is nothing about which to be cavalier.
LGBT rights advances can be attributed
to the work of many straight allies and
gay heroes and on the UVA Grounds,
to the Serpentine Society, where LGBT
alumni provide straight talk beside the
legendary curvy serpentine wall invented
by Thomas Jefferson. The Serpentine
Society was conceived in 1998 and
is dedicated to advocating for LGBT
alumni, faculty and students.
Its simultaneously no ones fault
and everyones that LGBT students
had to live in a quiet isolated closet over
much of history. Queers have been in
quads since the rst Corinthian column
was erected on a campus. Today
theyre out in the sunshine sitting
against that same column.
Who to thank for all this progress?
Witecks gay heroes are pre-
Stonewall: Frank Kameny, Barbara
Gittings and Lilli Vincenz. His straight
heroes are Rep. John Lewis (D- Ga.)
and Julian Bond of the NAACP
black leaders who considered us
their gay brothers and sisters even
before President Obama gave an
inaugural shout-out to those brave
enough to be out. Imagine that from
Richard Nixon in 73. Wynns straight
hero is Hillary Clinton and he talks about
the gay-straight village it took to raise
him at UVA. While Ellen DeGeneres and
Rachel Maddow are high on his list of
gay heroes, he need look no further than
Peabody Hall on campus to nd others.
I am so lucky to have a ton of gay
role models to choose from. Our
dean of students, Allen Groves is the
coolest guy around. Everyone on
Grounds loves him!
Our long slow march toward
this equality is sort of parallel in
pop culture to the goofy (and now
gay) Gomer Pyle of the 60s TV
show. The now-out Jim Nabors endured
sit-com life in quiet backwards Mayberry
RFD. Nabors waited until he was 82 to
come out. Wynn? He grew up with Will
and Grace. In comparison, his coming
out was a piece of cake. Even in rural
Tidewater, Va., he was able to come out
to his parents and very close friends in
10th grade. He arrived at UVA to nd
that a freshmans sexual orientation was
indeed part of freshmen orientation.
Witeck waited until he was out of
college before pursuing the authentic
gay life. That year, Paul Simon topped
the charts with 50 Ways to Leave Your
Lover and its only then that Witeck
looked for one.
With courage and composure,
Witeck has returned to help make
the Grounds at UVA better for Wynn
and the generations to follow. Witeck
has worked on the Hill and in public
relations. He worked for Sen. Bob
Packwood and for Hill and Knowlton,
the legendary PR shop, and now owns
his own rm, Witeck Communications in
D.C. He published the landmark book
Business Inside Out, serves on too
many LGBT boards to mention, and
returned to UVA in 2001 to accept the
prestigious Bernard Mayes Award.
Would he trade all that for four out
years as a young man?
I felt very lucky to have the quality of
education UVA offers, Witeck said. I
sometimes imagine the difference being
open and honest would have allowed
me to break my own self barriers. But
no, I have zero regrets. What I really
value is having witnessed so much of
this change in 40 years and knowing
that we all played a part in making it
happen. It occurs to him that childless
gay boomers do have kids going to
college each year other peoples gay
children who need help and guidance.
Wistful about the past, but stridently
optimistic about the future, Witeck
reects, The Serpentine Society is one
of the few groups that serve as a bridge
for the gay community to the entire
Virginia community to the faculty,
staff and students and allows us to put
LGBT and identity issues forward.
Although UVA isnt perfect on gay
issues, and may lag behind some other
major institutions, the vision of the
Serpentine Society is helping bring
about positive change.
Scientists recently reported that as
we age, the most vivid memories we
will retain will be those from 12 to
22 years. Cleverly termed the
reminiscence bump its a cruel hoax
on older gay folks. Those years could be
lonely and isolating and when it comes
to true gay identity, its a bump that
leaves an entire generation with just a
lump in their throats. Not so with Wynn.
I cant count the number of gay
friends I have in my head! Isnt that
awesome? He still cautions that many
of his classmates are closeted and that
victory isnt complete. As Witeck says,
Students today still have their own
aspirations, fears, risks and needs.
Anyone walking the grounds at UVA
must know that time has been on the
side of LGBT students. Just ask Wynn
and his date, sitting over on the Lawn,
both with their winning smiles.
Wynns ancestor, Socrates Maupin,
joined UVA as a student in 1828 and later
returned as faculty. The Civil War occurred
while he was chairman of the faculty. It
was Socrates Maupin who renanced the
university on his credit, reconstituted the
faculty and returned the university to the
Union clearly marking progress and
forward momentum.
Today, if Socrates or Witeck
were to return to the grounds, theyd
walk past an open door on the ground
oor of Newcomb Hall where Scott
Rheinheimer leads the LGBT Resource
Center. New to his job, he is amazed at
the support and resources for the center.
From Dean Groves to the
Serpentine Society to the faculty and
the administration, everyone here has
welcomed me openly and warmly,
Rheinheimer said.
So, Witeck lived in a desert so todays
students, like Wynn, could enjoy an oasis.
I think that students inherently face
a number of challenges acclimating to
the college environment, said Wynn.
Whats fortunate is that the university
has made great strides in being inclusive
and accepting. Like Bob, many students
feel they must hide their orientation

colleagues in the Senate as opposed to
the 434 members with whom she served
in the larger House.
It may be just catching up with people
on the walk to the Capitol or an elevator
ride or all the people whove already
reached out and said, Lets have dinner,
lets have coffee, lets get to know each
other and nd out where our common
ground is, Baldwin said. Its one of the
things I love about the legislative process
trying to build majority support for
certain ideas. A lot of that is done on that
person-to-person level. And its much
tougher in the House.
And Baldwin is undertaking outreach
for the LGBT community as she
completes her rst 100 days in ofce.
On April 18, the D.C.-based Whitman-
Walker Health will honor the senator
with its Partner for Life Award at the Be
the Care event. On Sunday, Baldwin
gave a well-received keynote speech at
the Gay & Lesbian Victory Funds annual
champagne brunch in D.C.
In terms of LGBT issues, the most
prevalent topic in the U.S. Senate these
days isnt legislation, but senators
coming out for marriage equality. Just
this week, Sen. Tim Johnson (D-S.D.)
added his name to the list of senators,
making a total of 54 in support of
marriage equality.
Baldwin said the trend of U.S. senators
coming out in favor of marriage equality
reects a growing trend nationwide. A
widely cited poll from the Washington
Post found that 58 percent of the
American public now backs marriage
rights for gay couples.
In many cases, just like the presidents
evolution on the issue, its been because
of individuals wanting their neighbors,
their relatives, their friends who are part
of the LGBT community to have full and
equal rights, including the right to marry
the person they love and protect their
own families, Baldwin said. I think
sometimes you see elected ofcials
leading, sometimes you see elected
ofcials following. As long as they get to
the right place, I celebrate either way.
While many of these senators talked
about consideration of their gay friends
and colleagues before making their
announcements, Baldwin said no U.S.
senator spoke to her for her perspective
as a lesbian in the days before they
made their announcements because
they were in the middle of spring recess.
And Baldwin has little patience for
members of the LGBT community who
criticized Republican Sen. Rob Portman
(Ohio) for endorsing marriage as a result
of his son coming out as gay.
Obviously, he had a choice between
whether to change his mind and
do so privately, or change his mind
and do so publicly, Baldwin said. I
think it took courage for him to make
this announcement, and, frankly, as
I said earlier, the major factor for
most Americans changing their mind
is because of someone they know,
someone they love, someone they work
with. And so this is how most Americans
change their mind, and I think thats a
great thing. Im certainly not going to
criticize it, and I would ask again, for
those who are critical of Sen. Portman
and support marriage equality, we want
people to get to that place and be
ready to take that stance, and we dont
really care what their journey is. We just
want them to get there.
Baldwin has relatively optimistic
views about Senate advancement of
pro-LGBT bills in the remainder of the
113th Congress. She had particularly
high hopes for legislation overseen
by a panel on which she serves the
Senate Health, Education, Labor &
Pensions Committee foreseeing
advancement of both the Employment
Non-Discrimination Act and the Student
Non-Discrimination Act.
Recalling that Senate HELP Committee
Chair Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) has pledged
to move the legislation to the oor this
year, Baldwin said well very likely see
ENDA advance in the Senate.
Although Baldwin sees a path in the
Senate for ENDA even a oor vote
it ends there. She wasnt optimistic
that the House under Speaker John
Boehner (R-Ohio) would be amicable to
the legislation.
Im feeling optimistic that we can get
a oor vote on ENDA, Baldwin said.
Im feeling fairly pessimistic about the
chances of ENDA moving ahead in the
House as currently composed.
On the issue of bullying, Baldwin was
optimistic that both chambers would
approve legislation provided the
Senate undertakes education reform
known as Elementary & Secondary
Education Act reauthorization and
includes the measure in the larger
vehicle. Legislation that has addressed
these issues are the Student Non-
Discrimination Act and the Safe Schools
Improvement Act.
I think the prospect for either a
Student Non-Discrimination Act within
that bill or an anti-bullying measure
within that bill or even both remains
a distinct possibility, Baldwin said. And
that is something that I think may be able
to pass through both houses of Congress
especially given earlier action in the
House on the Violence Against Women
Act that had LGBT-inclusion. It suggests
a willingness to act in similar ways to
protect LGBT youth.
Baldwin based on her distinction
on the chances of passing ENDA and
an anti-bullying inclusive education
reform bill on the temperament of
House Republican leadership as well
as passing the LGBT measure as one
segment of another vehicle.
I would say the parallel between
VAWA and the ESEA is if we can make
these very important provisions a part of
a bill that gains some momentum, and
that the Republicans in the House see
as must-pass legislation, our prospects
are brighter, Baldwin said.
Although she predicts movement on
ENDA, Baldwin also said she expects
changes to ENDA upon reintroduction,
which she anticipates later this month.
The Blade previously reported the
legislation was under review before its
planned reintroduction later this month.
Baldwin didnt detail the ways in
which the legislation would be changed,
but talked vaguely about changes to
ENDA that are the result of lessons
learned from states and municipalities
that have enacted non-discrimination
policies based on sexual orientation
and gender identity.
I certainly think therell be some
changes based on the hard work
of advocacy and legal defense
organizations across the U.S. where
lessons have been learned from state
level legislation, and we want to capture
some of those changes in the proposal
thats introduced in the Senate, Baldwin
said. That said, theres also always the
counter-attention of trying to keep all
the range of supportive organizations
on board and all of the, not only all of
the prior sponsors of the legislation, but
obviously you want to build on that to
gain momentum. So, I think thats the
as I understand it the process thats
ongoing right now, and we hope itll
come to a conclusion shortly so that the
bill can be introduced.
As previously reported by the
Blade, Baldwin conrmed two areas
where ENDA is under reconsideration
are the religious exemption, which
was previously in line with Title VII
of the Civil Rights Acts of 1964, and
disparate impact, an issue previously
unaddressed by ENDA that deals with
discriminatory action by employers that
isnt discriminatory on its face.

Trans woman killed in Baltimore
On April 3, Kelly Young, 29, a transgender woman, was found shot at her
home at 2200 block of Barclay Street in East Baltimore. She later died at a
local hospital.
Baltimore City Police said its too early in the investigation to determine if
the crime was connected to the victims gender identity or whether it was a
hate crime. Police have no suspects.
The neighborhood embraced her boys and girls, straight or gay she
was embraced, her sister Monique Mack told television station WMAR. It
wasnt always a smooth road but I will say it was more smooth than not.
The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Community Center of Baltimore
and Maryland (GLCCB) issued a statement deploring the crime. It urges the
Baltimore City Police Department and local government to move swiftly
and proactively in identifying Ms. Youngs assailant(s) and bringing them to
justice.

Ex-Raven says 4 players to come out
Brendon Ayanbadejo, a supporter
of marriage equality and LGBT
rights who was released last week
by the Baltimore Ravens, indicated
that more than one gay player in
the National Football League will be
coming out and soon. Following a
report on CBSSports.com that a gay
NFL player is strongly considering
coming out, Ayanbadejo agreed.
He told the Baltimore Sun, I think
it will happen sooner than you think.
Were in talks with a handful of
players who are considering it. There
are up to four players being talked
to right now and theyre trying to
be organized so they can come out
on the same day together. It would
make a major splash and take the
pressure off one guy. It would be a
monumental day if a handful or a
few guys come out.
Asked if there would be a backlash, Ayanbadejo responded, Of course,
there would be backlash. If they could share the backlash, it would be more
positive. Its cool. Its exciting. The NFL and organizations are already being
proactive and open if a player does it and if something negative happens.
Well see what happens.
Last week a story surfaced in which Ayanbadejo appeared to suggest to
a Newsday reporter that his release from the Ravens was caused, in part, by
his advocacy for LGBT causes. He later distanced himself from that comment
and thanked the Ravens organization for its support. The Ravens have been
backing me; they knew my stance for years and have been facilitating me and
organizing me with LGBT and set me up with Equality Maryland. They helped
me, he said.
Play for the Feast fundraiser on tap
Play for the Feast will take place on April 20 to benet Moveable Feast,
a Baltimore-based organization that provides nutritious meals and other
services at no cost to people with HIV/AIDS, breast cancer and other life-
threatening conditions.
The event, which will include such casino-style games as Blackjack and
Texas Holdem Poker competitions, a Money Wheel, Silent Auction and
a 50-50 rafe, will take place from 7-10 p.m. at Silo Point, 1200 Steuart St.,

Health ofcials urge lawmakers
to pass marriage bill
CHICAGO Members of the citys LGBT Health Advisory Council sent a letter to
Illinois lawmakers Monday that said legalizing same-sex marriage there will benet
public health, Chicago Phoenix reported this week. The letter came as state House
members returned to session this week. Its expected that theyll consider the
Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act before adjourning May 31.
The council, formed late last month, is comprised of 16 LGBT community
leaders from throughout Chicago who will directly inuence the citys LGBT health
outreach, the article said.
Civil rights are important for health because the social differences that result from
inequalities in areas such as income, education, neighborhood conditions and
the experience of stigma actually have more impact on the health of an individual
than even medical care, the council wrote. Today, the (LGBT) population suffers
from poorer health than the heterosexual population. Stigma and a long history of
discrimination are at the heart of these poor health outcomes.

Staying HIV free for a price?
NEW YORK A new study has found that young gay men in Mexico City would pledge
to stay HIV-free, attend a monthly safe-sex talk and take regular HIV tests to prove they
were uninfected if they were paid $288 per year, the New York Times reported last week.
Male sex workers would accept just $156 for the same pledge, the study found.
Researchers at Brown University, the University of California at Berkeley and Mexicos
national public health institute conducted the study, published online by the European
Journal of Health Economics, the Times reported. Treatment for HIV drugs costs the
countrys public health system about $7,000 per year, so paying people to stay HIV-free
might be a bargain in the long run, researchers said.
Researchers approached men aged 18-25 in gay bars, discos and the streets of the citys red-
light district. The 40-minute survey, taken on cell phone-size computers, increased or decreased
the amount each man was offered until 70 percent answered yes, the Times reported.
LGBT research pioneer to be honored
SAN FRANCISCO A pioneer in LGBT physical and mental health will be honored by
the American Psychiatric Association at its annual meeting next month, the Windy City
Times reported citing a press release.
Caitlin Ryan, a social worker, researcher and policy expert who worked to establish
a national network of LGBT health and mental health providers, will receive the John
E. Fryer Award in May. The APA will present it with the Association of Gay and Lesbian
Psychiatrists after its namesake who played a crucial role in persuading the APA to remove
homosexuality from its list of mental disorders in 1973.
Ryan co-authored the rst guidelines on AIDS policy for elected ofcials, co-authored
the rst clinical care guidelines for LGBT youth and conducted seminal research that
established the role families play in the health and well being of LGBT children among
many other accomplishments, the press release said.
Study nds trans women heavily affected by HIV
NEW YORK Transgender women were nearly 49 times more likely to have HIV
compared to a reference population according to a new study at Johns Hopkins School
of Public Health, the Hufngton Post and other news outlets reported last week.
A team of researchers studied gures on trans women in 15 countries over the span of
a decade and compared them to adults of similar reproductive age in those populations.
Researchers said previous studies have often failed to research gures for trans women
who face stigma all over the world despite wealth or region.
The study was published last month in the Lancet Infectious Diseases journal. The
Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS passed a resolution in response to the ndings
that makes 15 recommendations to combat the disproportionately high rates.

months into the new year?
By now most of our new health habits
we set to stick to should be a part of
us. I like to use this time as reection
time. Have you stuck to the goals you
made for yourself? If not, why?
Remember you are in control of it all
so take personal responsibility for your
health. Think about what has worked for
you. What hasnt?
This sounds simple, but do more of
whats working and less of whats not.
This is also a good time to replace the
things that arent working with new
options. Have you hired a personal
trainer, started a new class, tracked
your food in a journal/calorie counter,
organized your time to make time for
workouts, joined a run club, signed up
for a 5k or tough mudder competition?
Even making a bet with a group of
friends can help to inspire weight loss?
There are a host of strategies to getting
and staying healthy so make sure you
choose what works for you. Today we will
go into my virtual mailbag to answer a few
questions I received about knowing how
to change up your workout routines.
It seems like common knowledge
among gym goers that you have to
change up your workouts so that you
can get max gains, but when it comes to
the what, when, why and how, the light
bulb upstairs usually goes out. The rst
general rule is you never want to do the
exact same thing for more than 4 weeks,
max. Our bodies are great at adaptation
(I guess thats why we beat out the dodo
bird) so we have to keep our muscles
guessing at all times.
When it comes to changing up your
routine most people only think about
increasing the weight. Ill come back to
this, but there are various ways we can
switch up our workouts. The easiest thing
to do is switch up your order of exercises.
People tend to do the hardest stuff rst
because you are fresh and feel strong.
This is great in the beginning, but
as you progress try moving your hard
movements to the end of your workouts
and feel the difference. Another way I
like to switch up my clients workout is
to go for time instead of repetitions.
Maybe you usually do 15 squats, instead
see how many squats you can nish in
40s. This will make you go faster and
push yourself harder.
Make sure to keep track of how many
reps you do each set and try to maintain
or beat that number as you continue
through each set. This will ensure you
are still working as hard as you can even
through fatigue.
My favorite way to switch up workouts
is to begin including supersets, a type
of circuit training where you do different
exercises in a row without rest to tire your
muscles out in a new way. They can be
used with the same muscle group to get a
huge burn or with different muscle groups
to keep your heart rate up while the rst
muscle group gets to recover. I even like
to include sprints on a cardio machine or
jumps in between strength exercises to
max out my clients calories burn during
sessions. As you get better, you can add
in exercises supersetting three to ve
exercises through a single circuit.
Youve been lifting for some time
now, but how do you know when its
time to increase the weights? As with
everything it depends on your goals,
which should dictate your lifting plan.
If youre focused on strength, then
you should be lifting a weight you can
only do one to six reps. Hypertrophy
or building muscle, then 8-12 reps,
and metabolic or toning 13-plus reps.
A general rule is if you can do three
sets of a weight within your goal range,
with perfect form and not reach muscle
fatigue, then its time to bump it up.
Muscle fatigue is what I like to call
the my-muscles-are-about-to-fall-
off factor. In other words, the point
where you can not complete another
rep. Though everyone says they want
to tone up, dont neglect muscle
building because thats what will give
you a great shape and sexy gure if and
when you lose the fat. I recommend
rotating through these training zones
every four weeks accompanied by high
intensity interval training.

Thats what it must
feel like, sometimes
Imagine being 13 years old, lying in
bed staring at the ceiling and wondering
what is wrong with you because you have
an unexplainable, almost uncontrollable
attraction to those of the same sex.
Now imagine that you are staring at the
ceiling feeling you were born the wrong
sex. I wont even pretend to think I know
how that feels.
Trans women and trans men are
well aware that discussions around
transgender make many people feel
uncomfortable. Hell, most of the time
they feel uncomfortable, too. Theyve
spent most of their lives wishing they
lived on another planet, one populated
with people who would accept them for
who they are.
Here are some facts surrounding
transgender health: In a 2010 survey of
7,000 members of the trans community
by the National Center for Transgender
Equality and the National Gay and
Lesbian Task Force more than 40 percent
of transgender people in the United
States have tried to commit suicide.
About 20 percent have been refused
medical care, and one in 50 have been
violently assaulted in a doctors ofce. Yes,
you heard correctly, in a doctors ofce!
Because of the risks and fears
associated with coming out as trans, it is
difcult to target critical mental health,
HIV and STD prevention messages
to the trans community, and its even
more difcult to reach those who dont
identify as a particular gender or sex.
During a White House symposium
I attended last year, a couple of trans
females said they know lots of trans
people who intentionally become
infected with HIV in order to obtain
healthcare. Those remarks were met
with a standing ovation because they
spoke out publicly. That conrmed to
me that much work needs to be done
to assure the trans community feels
supported and included in the AIDS
and LGBTQ communities.
A couple of months ago I was at a
large and busy healthcare center in Las
Vegas where I noticed a woman standing
between the mens and the womens
restrooms. At rst I thought perhaps
she was waiting for her young son or
daughter. But as I got closer, I realized
the woman was a male-to-female trans
person. I didnt ask, but clearly she was
debating which restroom to use. And
she looked scared.
Trans people understand the issue
is complicated for those who are cis
gender. Ill give you an example. My
partners mother told him she was
distraught to learn her nephew is
transgender. I listened to him explain
that a trans person believes and feels he
or she was born the wrong sex. Some
seek a sex change; others dont. Its a
difcult decision. Its also difcult to
explain to someone who lives in a small
town in the mountains of Nevada.
The conversation made me realize
the challenges gay men and lesbians
face when they try to explain same-sex
attraction to straight people. Yet, trans
people face even greater challenges.
I believe ignorance is self-imposed
and, therefore, it can be changed.
The way out is to educate yourself.
Remember, all hairdressers and
designers are not gay men, and not
every lesbian knows how to use a
hammer or change tires.
Education is a two-way street. We
have a responsibility to learn more
about the trans community and the trans
community needs to educate the AIDS
and LGBTQ community. All letters in
the phrase LGBTQ community need
to come together to discuss how we
all can work together for the common
good for our human and health rights.
As the United States Declaration of
Independence states:
We hold these truths to be self-
evident, that all men (add women, gay
men, lesbians, trans persons, bisexual
persons and those questioning) are
created equal, that they are endowed
by their Creator with certain unalienable
Rights, that among these are Life,
Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
Gay or transgender the bottom
line is we all just want to be happy.

Science supports
higher scrutiny for
laws that discriminate

The amicus brief from the Gay and
Lesbian Medical Association that I
contributed to relates to the Supreme
Court that the last 30 years of research
provides solid evidence that sexual
orientation and gender identity are
biologically conferred during the rst 12
weeks of pregnancy, and are as innate
as handedness, height or skin color.
During that critical rst trimester,
the fetus is exposed to proteins, sex
hormones and enzymes that result
in numerous traits that are different
for men and women. These sexually
dimorphic traits include anatomy and
physiology, certain brain structures,
some physical skills and some cognitive
skills. Among these sexually dimorphic
traits are sexual orientation (most prefer
the opposite sex) and gender identity
(most men and women identify with the
gender of their genital anatomy).
However, nature never confers traits
in a perfectly dichotomous fashion, and
never is precisely black or white, but
rather expresses as innite shades of
grey across a broad spectrum of grays,
some very dark, some not so dark,
some light, some very light. Likewise,
almost no one is perfectly heterosexual
or homosexual, purely male or female,
but some blend of features that make
them unique. More than 50 published
research studies in the National Library
of Medicine provide evidence that
transgender people and homosexual
men and women are born with traits
that fall in the mid portion, or even
closer to the opposite-gender end of
that spectrum. They are born with the
cognitive and physiologic skills, bone
anatomy and brain circuitry that are
slightly or substantially more like the
skills, features, orientation and identity
of the opposite sex.
Observations of more than 450
species of animals conrm that eas,
birds, reptiles and primates (that is us)
demonstrate bisexual or homosexual
behavior including recreational sex
to orgasm in the presence of the
opposite gender, and lifelong pairings.
Experimental evidence long ago
demonstrated that injecting hormones
into pregnant rodents and guinea
pigs could reverse their sexual partner
preferences. While such experiments
would never be performed on humans,
observations of multiple human medical
conditions conrm the link between
early development and sexually
dimorphic traits including orientation
and identity.
For example, when a female baby is
born with a congenital abnormality of
the adrenal gland, a missing enzyme
causes a buildup of male-like hormones
(androgens) to accumulate in the
babys blood. Most female infants with
this condition will have boy-like bone
structures and play patterns, up to half of
the girls will later identify as lesbian, and
a few as transgender males, especially
if they have the extreme forms of
adrenogenital syndrome. Furthermore,
research shows that girls who had a boy
co-twin in their mothers wombs have
more male-like bone structure and play
patterns, and are more likely to identify
as lesbian later in life. This is because
the baby girls brain received some of
her co-twins male hormones through
their shared amniotic uid membrane.
For baby boys, any subtle decrease
in the usual level of essential male
chemicals during the rst part
of pregnancy can increase his
chance of becoming a gay male or
transsexual. Seventeen published
research reports have concluded that
boys with many older brothers are more
likely to be gay than boys with fewer
older brothers. Why? Because every
pregnant mother receives proteins
from her baby boys blood that her
body perceives as foreign, causing
her to develop blocking antibodies to
neutralize and remove them. With each
successive boy pregnancy, the mother
makes more blocking antibodies,
progressively reducing the level of
essential male chemical exposure to
each subsequent male child.
The enormous multidisciplinary body
of scientic evidence conrming the
biologic basis of sexual orientation and
gender identity is the substance of our
brief to the Supreme Court, and should
also inform our national debate and
policy decisions. While, admittedly, the
data is drab and overly scientic, the
evidence is solid. Like skin or hair color,
sexual orientation and gender identity
are unchangeable, innocent, historically
misunderstood and deserving of
accommodation in our public laws.
Our Supreme Court justices need this
scientic information.

Cooper, Clinton undeserving
of awards while others
go unnoticed
Are the good people at GLAAD suffer-
ing from amnesia?
First, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against
Defamation honored lifelong closet case
Anderson Cooper with its Vito Russo Award
last month. Then came word that former
President Bill Clinton will be honored with
the Advocate for Change Award.
Russo was a pioneering LGBT activ-
ist and author who wrote The Celluloid
Closet. Cooper became infamous in the
gay community after Out magazine pub-
lished a 2008 cover story featuring his im-
age along with Jodie Fosters above the
headline The Glass Closet, Why the Stars
Wont Come Out and Play.
Cooper nally came out publicly last
year in a blog post and is immediately hon-
ored by GLAAD for doing what exactly? Is
GLAAD so desperate to sell tickets to its
awards shows that it must genuect at the
feet of anyone with a modicum of fame?
This star-fuckery does a disservice to the
movement and overlooks the hard work
and visibility of more deserving honorees.
As transparent as the Cooper award
was for its pandering, the Clinton award
is even more disappointing. Clinton gave
us Dont Ask, Dont Tell. He signed
the Defense of Marriage Act and later
bragged about it in 1996 campaign ads.
Former HRC President Elizabeth Birch
recently revealed that during that time,
Clinton White House ofcials threatened
to re-air the offensive ads if she took
credit for their being yanked amid a re-
storm of protest. More recently, Clinton
reportedly advised John Kerry to support
state constitutional amendments bar-
ring marriage equality during the 2004
presidential campaign. He only recently
changed his position; his wife only en-
dorsed marriage last month.
With such a stellar record of support,
its time for a GLAAD award! Im sure the
wealthy Los Angeles gays will shell out
plenty of cash for tickets to the award
show later this month. (Individual tickets
start at $500; a platinum table will set you
back $25,000.) For some inexplicable rea-
son, the gays are drawn to the Clintons
like moths to the ame.
While GLAAD is busy dispensing awards
to the unworthy, others who are actually
making a difference go unrecognized.
Take Ken Mehlman, for example, who
ran the 2004 Bush-Cheney re-election cam-
paign and cynically unleashed a barrage of
state constitutional amendments attack-
ing our relationships. He has since repudi-
ated his dirty deeds and worked behind the
scenes to do his penance. He has raised
money for the New York and Maryland mar-
riage efforts, among other contributions.
Where is the award for Mehlman? He has
certainly done more to advance gay rights
than Cooper.
And what about Sen. Rob Portman,
who bravely endorsed marriage equality
last month, becoming the rst Republican
senator to do so? He was pilloried by pro-
gressive bloggers because he attributed his
evolution on the issue to having a gay son.
The Wonkette blog went so far as to sug-
gest we buy him a cake to celebrate with
Fuck that guy written in icing.
But just days later when Sen. Claire Mc-
Caskill, a Democrat, announced her new-
found marriage support and attributed it
in part to having gay staff and friends, the
progressive bloggers erupted in predict-
able praise.
This misguided strategy of turning LGBT
rights into a partisan issue and the LGBT
movement into a wing of the Democratic
Party is as much a mistake today as it was
20 years ago.
Of course, we should welcome con-
verts like Cooper and Clinton to the
cause, but we mustnt rewrite history in
the process. And if our national advocacy
groups are going to honor public gures
like Cooper and Clinton who have such
complicated records on LGBT issues,
then shouldnt they reach across the aisle
and honor some Republicans, too?

GLAAD honoring all the wrong people
Citys LGBT voters must
turn out on April 23

The basic rights of D.C. residents are
subject to repeal or congressional veto
at any time. This alone should be reason
enough for every LGBT Washingtonian
to come out and vote for the budget au-
tonomy referendum on April 23.
As a result of the work carried out
by generations of leadership, D.C. has
among the strongest anti-discrimination
laws in the nation; marriage equality; a ful-
ly funded HIV prevention and treatment
infrastructure; and a mayor and Council
who listen when our community speaks.
Yet we only have many of these laws
and services in place at the pleasure of
Congress, which, with the exception of
our non-voting delegate, we had no
say in electing. Thats because Con-
gress must vote to approve each dollar
our city spends. Often, that afrmative
vote of approval comes with unwanted
strings attached, leaving our local laws
vulnerable to the whims of politicians
who often represent constituencies that
are vastly different from D.C., as well as
the federal lobbyists and donors who
have helped make Congress such a dys-
functional place.
The budget autonomy referendum
is just one step in a generations-long
battle to give Washingtonians the de-
mocracy were entitled to. It would
amend D.C.s Charter to make this ap-
proval process less of a target for Con-
gress. Instead of submitting our budget
for an afrmative vote from the House
and Senate, our budget would be ap-
proved automatically after 30 days un-
less Congress opted to intervene. This
is the same 30-day window that applies
to every other city law.
The reality of not having budget
autonomy is that we can never just do
whats in the best interests of our city;
we must rst consider whether or not
the likes of Rep. Michele Bachmann
would approve.
To us, our budget is the framework
for how we raise and spend our local
tax dollars. To members of Congress,
the D.C. budget is a backdoor for ad-
vancing the policy agendas of groups
and ideologies that would never get
through the front door of the Wilson
Building and a chance to curry favor
with constituents and donors.
But Washingtonians arent bargain-
ing chips; were people. Because of this
congressional interference, individuals
who are struggling with addiction have
been denied access to clean and safe
needles and low-income women have
had their access to reproductive health
services restricted.
What are harder to quantify are the lo-
cal priorities that our leaders dont pur-
sue out of concern that Congress would
have intervened. D.C.s marriage equal-
ity law was stymied for years because of
the threat of congressional veto. This
meant that activists had to engage in
a sophisticated decades-long plan to
ease D.C. into the kind of equality that
wouldnt draw the attention of the most
extreme members of Congress.
The April 23 referendum has drawn
opposition from some members of
Congress who would rather we just ac-
cept federal primacy over our laws. For
them, passage means that it will be
harder to bargain with the lives of more
than 600,000 Washingtonians.
Our city isnt perfect. We are going
through an ethics crisis in government, we
have extreme disparities in the economic
well being of our citizens, and we have a
school system that treats many of its stu-
dents more like prisoners than scholars.
None of these problems are easy to x,
but having greater autonomy would allow
us to solve our citys problems with less in-
terference from the outside.
Once D.C. citizens remove the ob-
struction of Congress and claim the de-
mocracy were entitled to as Americans,
we can continue the work of making this
city better for all of its citizens. Thats why
its imperative for all of us to come out
and vote for the referendum on April 23.
Marriage support raises
question of whats next for
movement
For those who have fought for LGBT
rights for decades, its mindboggling
that as of April 5, a majority of the Unit-
ed States Senate now supports same-
sex marriage. All but three Democrats
along with two Republicans, Sens. Rob
Portman (R-Ohio) and Mark Kirk (R-Ill.),
have joined the list of supporters with
more than seven issuing statements of
support in the past week alone.
The time has come for the Demo-
cratic hold-outs Sens. Mark Pryor (D-
Ark.), Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Mary
Landrieu (D-La.) to get on the right
side of history. They alone make it dif-
cult for the LGBT community to donate
to the Democratic National Committee
and Democratic Senatorial Campaign
Committee (DSCC) because there is ab-
solutely no reason to see our money ow
to those three candidates who dont sup-
port our full civil and human rights.
While thanking the 54 supporters, we
must at the same time ask them to not
only talk the talk but to walk the walk.
There should be at least 54 senators
co-sponsoring the Employment Non
Discrimination Act. If they agree that we
should be able to marry, then surely they
believe we should be able to work. We
should ask them to sign a letter asking
President Obama to issue the executive
order banning discrimination against the
LGBT community by federal contractors.
We need them to stand by their beliefs
and sign onto the Respect for Marriage
Act and say that gay and lesbian mar-
riages like those of heterosexual couples
are recognized in other states.
As support for marriage equality
spreads, there are posts on Facebook
asking what organizations like the Na-
tional Gay and Lesbian Task Force
(NGLTF) and the Human Rights Cam-
paign (HRC) will do if we get all these
rights. We need to remind people to
look at where society is with regard to
securing rights for minorities and women
and how important it is to be vigilant. You
can win rights but until you change the
hearts and minds of all the people, or at
least a huge majority of them, we will al-
ways be ghting to maintain those rights.
Consider some who call themselves our
friends, like local D.C. Council candidate
Patrick Mara. He still worked for, sup-
ported and donated money to candi-
dates who pledged to continue the ght
for a constitutional amendment banning
same-sex marriage. This is a candidate
who said he would appoint justices to
the Supreme Court who would likely rule
that same-sex marriage wasnt protected
by the constitution and to overturn Roe v.
Wade. This is someone who calls himself
a friend; we will always have to beware of
such friends.
We must continue to encourage
more members of the LGBT community
to run for ofce across the nation and
support them. As Barney Frank said, If
we dont have more seats at the table
we will continue to be on the menu.
We need those like Sen. Tammy Bald-
win (D-Wisc.) and candidates like Chris-
tine Quinn who will be the rst woman
and rst lesbian mayor of the City of
New York to speak out for our rights.
As we await the decisions of the
Supreme Court on Prop 8 and DOMA
there is much we still need to do. The
decisions will likely leave us far from
being full and equal participants in the
American dream and there will be much
left to accomplish to form that more
perfect union we all want .
Who would have thunk it?
You can win rights but until you change the hearts
and minds of all the people, or at least a huge
majority of them, we will always be ghting to
maintain those rights.

High stakes in budget autonomy referendum
Cheh proposes the
ABC-ization of
residential construction
Jaws dropped on Tuesday when D.C.
Council member Mary Cheh made clear
she wants to do to private real estate
development what was done to the
citys largest hometown industry.
Cheh is no longer merely pondering
introduction of legislation adding layers
of regulatory review for moderately large
residential construction projects, as she
had begun musing less than two weeks
ago. This week she introduced a bill de-
signed to mimic the citys notoriously
dysfunctional alcoholic beverage licens-
ing process for bars and restaurants.
Someone might want to remind her
how well that turned out.
Cheh wants both self-identied citi-
zen and Advisory Neighborhood Com-
mission (ANC) groups to have 120 days
to weigh in on project approvals that
include multiple city agencies. ANCs
alone are given an opportunity to of-
fer an advisory opinion on approvals
required by zoning variance requests
and those for commercial and mixed-
use projects. Chehs bill would subject
all matter-of-right residential build-
ings of more than 150,000 square feet
to this new auxiliary review obstacle, in
addition to commercial or mixed-use
projects larger than 50,000 square feet.
Her proposal will burden affected
agencies with the task of specically
responding to each objection and add
delays of at least half a year. In the busi-
ness world, thats an eternity and will
weaken development partnership inter-
est in the District, threaten project -
nancing and loan arrangements, endan-
ger retail tenant commitments, increase
the overall cost of doing business and
slow the citys growth and lessen its eco-
nomic vitality.
These are apparently considerations
of little interest to D.C.s Queen of the
NIMBYs.
Cheh held a Council committee hear-
ing on March 27 to examine broadening
public intervention in matter-of-right
development projects not requiring
special review due to a zoning variance
request or exception. She heard solely
from three development objectors from
her district ghting an upscale 263-unit
residential building in Chevy Chase on
upper Connecticut Avenue, N.W. Cheh
repeatedly bemoaned that they were
unable to directly intervene in the citys
zoning, design and permitting proce-
dures. They commiserated on a citywide
restructuring of the process.
Scant consultation was sufcient for
Cheh to immediately call for new regu-
latory protocols. Utilizing her trademark
worry-about-the-implications-later ap-
proach, Cheh wasnt concerned with
real-world business practicalities.
Nor does Cheh seem to care about
the extraordinary costs for private and
public sectors and case litigation ex-
pense, or city agency stafng require-
ments. If successful, her efforts will gum
up government with the same havoc-
wreaking interference by small groups
that is the signature of Alcoholic Bever-
age Control (ABC) licensing.
Having conducted a lonely and un-
successful ght opposing initial reforms
of alcohol licensing approved by her
colleagues last December, Cheh now
wants to mandate the ABC-ization of
construction.
Its no wonder why the District holds
the title for least business-friendly state
jurisdiction in the country.
News that this misguided ma-
ven of regulatory ridiculousness had
dreamed up a new scheme to make
doing business in the District even
more difcult and capricious never ar-
rives as a surprise. The stunner is that
she doesnt comprehend the citys
evolving zeitgeist or the lessons to be
learned from a broke down and out-
of-balance hospitality business licens-
ing system that her colleagues grap-
ple with how best to repair.
Regulatory reform is an intensifying
focus of other city ofcials, and is now
the mainstream position of D.C. Coun-
cil colleagues and competitive political
candidates.
The District is evolving into a vibrant,
condent, upbeat world-class city and
residents expect our politicians to en-
courage continued development, eco-
nomic expansion, modern regulations
and commonsense governance.
Its time for Mary Cheh to get off her
carnival bandwagon battling economic
development and equitable application
of city laws.

Immigration reform must
include LGBT couples
For the LGBT community, equality in
immigration is one of the many strug-
gles that have driven our movement
since its earliest days. For much of the
20th century, in the days before Stone-
wall, immigrants to the United States
that were deemed to be sexual or gen-
der minorities were labeled deviants
or psychopaths and turned away
often sent back home to even more un-
friendly shores.
It seems like weve come a long way
since then, and in many ways we have.
But as conversations around compre-
hensive immigration reform heat up,
the American people shouldnt over-
look the discrimination that is still on the
books to this day.
Because of DOMA, bi-national same-
sex couples are treated like strangers by
the federal government in immigration
cases, even if the couple has a valid,
state-granted marriage license. LGBT
asylum seekers, often from countries
with violently anti-gay environments,
are denied a safe place to call home
because of an arbitrary one-year ling
deadline. And undocumented LGBT
youth eligible for the DREAM Act are
still waiting for Congress to give them a
shot at a hopeful future.
Too many families have been torn
apart by legal discrimination based on
nothing but animus. Too many com-
mitted and loving couples have had to
make the truly painful choice between
the person they love and the country
they love. And too many good, up-
standing people are denied a chance
for a better life because of who they are
or who they love.
It is time to take action to right these
wrongs. Today, comprehensive im-
migration reform is back on the table.
The American people, members of
Congress in both parties and President
Obama all agree that its time to take
lasting and decisive action. These op-
portunities dont come along every day.
The last major immigration reform bill
was signed into law in 1986. It takes an
alignment of the political stars to get it
done.
But a lot has changed since 1986. Its
no longer an acceptable option to sim-
ply sweep LGBT immigrants and their
needs on the back burner. Thats why
last week the Human Rights Campaign
released our declaration of principles
on immigration reformincluding nine
key reforms that must be included in a
truly inclusive and comprehensive bill.
Simply put, a comprehensive bill
must live up to its name. Any legislation
that is signed into law must acknowl-
edge that no matter who you are
LGBT or non-LGBT if youve worked
hard and paid your dues, youve earned
a fair and equal shot at the American
Dream. This country has a proud history
of rolling back laws that treat people
differently for no good reason, and im-
migration reform must continue that
proud heritage.
After all, were at a historic moment
of national consensus. Today, the Ameri-
can people agree on at least two things:
treating LGBT people fairly and reform-
ing our broken immigration system.
Now its time for our laws to catch up to
our national values. As a matter of basic
justice for all, its time for truly inclusive
comprehensive immigration reform.

Clinton to the rescue after
country singer forced to
cancel Rehoboth appearance

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. Recent
years in Rehoboth Beach, Del., have
seen the growth of an active lesbian
community as more and more lesbian
couples and singles retire or spend their
summer weekends here.
Not only do we have lesbian clubs
such as Rehoboth Ale House, the
Pond (formerly the Frogg Pond) and
Seafood Shack, among others, but
we are also active in civic and political
organizations, says lesbian resident
Betty Deacon.
Claire Snyder-Hall, founder of the
Rachel Maddow Club, a lesbian club that
discusses political issues, says, There
is an incredible difference my partner
and I have noticed since 10 years ago,
when there was absolutely no place
for lesbians to go. She attributes part
of that growth to the Womens FEST,
which is back this weekend for its 13th
year. On Thursday night, a welcome
party disco dance was scheduled at
the Atlantic Sands Hotel. Festivities
continue through Sunday.
The event, which attracts between
2,000-2,500 people, is considered the
largest womens festival in the mid-
Atlantic region. Not only does it feature
nationally known entertainment, but
numerous workshops, ranging from
information on lesbian travel presented
by Olivia Vacations, to writing your
coming out story presented by lesbian
author and Rehoboth Beach resident,
Fay Jacobs, who chaired the event for
three years and says current chairs Patti
Burke and Sharon Miken and about 10
others are working like dogs.
Jacobs says Womens FEST is
enormous and the premier womens
event in the region. Were kind of
unofcially second to Provincetown
with their womens week. She guesses
about a third to half of those who attend
each year are from out of town.
According to Mickie McManamon,
administrative assistant at CAMP
Rehoboth, the sponsor of the
conference, This years event will focus
on outdoor health activities, including a
walking tour of Rehoboth, a golf outing
and tips on RVing.
Several lesbian performers will
be heard during the FEST, including
singer and songwriters Viki Dee and
Christine Havrill and comedian Vickie
Shaw. Country singer and lesbian Chely
Wright had been scheduled but due to
the impending birth of her twin sons had
to cancel as her doctor put her on bed
rest. Lesbian comedian Kate Clinton will
ll in at tonights show.
The good news is not only that
Kate was available, but that she loves
Rehoboth Beach so much, she looked
forward to performing here again,
McManamon says.
Jacobs admits the last-minute
cancellation relatively speaking
threw organizers for a loop.
It was insane, she says. We
found out about Chely about noon last
Wednesday but we had some people
with some personal connections to
Kate. Shes been here before, you
know. She heard about it through our
connections and said shed come and
bail us out. It was amazingly lovely. Shes
a special person.
Clinton will perform material from her
current show, the Sis-Boom-Bah Tour.

How long have you been out and
who was the hardest person to tell?
Ive been out since I was 16. The
hardest person to tell was my mother.
Whos your LGBT hero?
Kevin Aucoin. Having painted so
many legendary faces and making
such an impact on the makeup world,
he still somehow remained amazingly
humble. Paint and makeup might be
temporary but humanity and love
arent. He exemplied that.

Whats Washingtons best
nightspot, past or present?
Not sure! Still new to town, so show
me a good time! Although I have to
say U Street is fun.

Describe your dream wedding.
My dream wedding would have
everyone I love present with a
supportive mindset. There would be
lots of color, alcohol and Mexican food!

What non-LGBT issue are
you most passionate about?
Im really passionate about HIV.
Even though it affects the LGBT
community, its a worldwide issue, just
like cancer, that needs to annihilated.

What historical outcome
would you change?
I would change Prop 8 in California
ever being proposed. I would love to
get married in my home state and with
the person I love, regardless of gender.

Whats been the most
memorable pop culture
moment of your lifetime?
I think seeing Janet Jackson ash the
entire world at the Super Bowl takes the
cake. That, and when RuPauls Drag
Race came to television.

On what do you insist?
I insist on a lot of things. I think that
comes with being a dramatic person.
I insist on effort. I insist on love. I insist
on respect. I insist on fun. And most of
all, I insist on being happy in life.
What was your last Facebook post
or Tweet?
It was a post of my $5
margarita at dinner.

If your life were a book,
what would the title be?
Just an Indian boy living an
American life.
If science discovered a way to
change sexual orientation,
what would you do?
Nothing. Im beautiful the way I am.

What do you believe in
beyond the physical world?
I believe god is a concept, not an
entity. Physical being is just a faade,
maybe even an illusion. Its what is
inside that I think compels us to be
unique. I think that god resides
within human beings and (like a lamp)
it takes years to nd that idea and
spark it. I think once you do though,
you can never put it out.
Whats your advice for LGBT
movement leaders?
Keep doing what youre doing, because
I know that personally I need guidance. So
if I need it then Im sure there are a million
others like me who do too.
What would you walk
across hot coals for?
I would walk across hot coals for
a chance to quit my day job and
perform dance full time. That and
maybe for a trip to India!

What LGBT stereotype
annoys you most?
That drag queens are transgender.
Or for that matter, gay men in general.
I grew up in a community where South
Asian gay men living out of the closet
was rare. So when I came out I faced a
lot of ignorant comments from people
who didnt understand why I wanted
to be a woman. I think education is
the way to solve that.

Whats your favorite LGBT movie?
I really liked Hedwig and The
Angry Inch. I also loved Rent.

Whats the most overrated
social custom?
Social customs as in etiquette? I think
etiquette is not overrated but rather
lacking! And I dont mean the complexities
of it, but rather simple manners.
What trophy or prize
do you most covet?
Awards and prizes have never
really meant the world to me, but I
think being a dance nalist in NFAAs
YoungARTS program in 2010 was
one of them. Getting to work with
amazing artists who are par excellence
was such a privilege and learning
experience for me.

What do you wish
youd known at 18?
What grey hair looks like, so I
wouldnt be so shocked now every
time I nd a new one.

When a mutual friend put Kasi Aysola in touch with Daniel Phoenix Singh
the local founder of Dakshina/Daniel Phoenix Singh Dance Company
the 21-year-old Los Angeles native saw it as a chance to get back into dance.
Aysola, who arrived here March 1, makes it sound like it happened very
quickly: I discussed it with Daniel, he said yes, so I moved.
The company has a local performance planned this weekend. On Saturday
(at 8 p.m. and Sunday (at 7) at Dance Place (3225 8th St., N.E.), the company
will present a varied program that opens with traditional Bharata Natyam
dance that morphs between lush storytelling and abstract dances. A modern
fusion work, Anna Sokolows Magritte, Magreete, which combines dance,
text and music will follow. Promotional materials call the 1970 work one of
the most inuential modern dance works ever created. (General admission

By day, he works as he did in L.A. in makeup. He sells and
demonstrates products and gives applications at Sephora in Friendship
Heights. Hes also studying ballet.
I have a dual life, he says. Im realistic about the degree to which dancing
will pay my bills, so I have this as well and enjoy it almost as much. I wake up
in a good mood knowing I get to do something fun that Im good at.
Aysolas boyfriend of a year, Dominique, is relocating here from L.A.
in two weeks. Aysola lives in Silver Spring and enjoys eating, watching
Netix, a good drink and spending time with people I love in his free time.

Out theater pros in
several disciplines win big
at Hayes Awards

I came to Signature [Theatre] to
do Dreamgirls and met my dream
guy, said an ecstatic Cedric Neal as
he accepted the Helen Hayes Award
for outstanding supporting actor in a
resident musical for playing fallen music
idol Jimmy Early in the companys take
on the Motown-inspired musical. Filled
with love and gratitude, but not too
serious, describe both Neals boyfriend-
acknowledging speech and the mood
of this years ceremony held Monday
night at the Warner Theatre.
Presented by theatreWashington, the
Helen Hayes Awards have been doled
out annually to reward excellence in
Washington-area professional theater
since 1984. Throughout 2012, 54 theaters
produced 201 (150 plays and 51 musicals)
productions that met eligibility requirements
in the January-through-December judging
cycle. From these shows, a pool of 48
volunteer judges selected the evenings
nominees and winners.
Mondays ceremony was hosted by
the familiar melliuous tones of unseen
announcer Robert Aubry Davis and
changing pairs of presenters including
gay theater professionals like actor
Frank Britton, set designer Tony Cisek,
sassy choreographer Maurice Hines
and young Helen Hayes Award-winning
actor Matthew DeLorenzo. Throughout
the evening, six top notch local artists
(including Delorenzo and Joshua
Morgan also gay) performed musical
numbers cute original songs as well
as familiar tunes picked from the ve
nominated resident musical productions.
The evening got off to a quick start
with Serge Seiden, who is gay, receiving
outstanding director for a resident
musical for MetroStages Jacques Brel
Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris.
Bobby Smith won outstanding actor
in a resident musical for his brilliant work
in Brel. Im sorry I didnt wear my
tux, said Smith (also gay). He also joked
about martinis and old age medications
(though hes hardly old) before getting
serious and thanking MetoStages
artistic director Carolyn Grifn for
holding the title role for him while he
recuperated from hip replacement
surgery. Smiths leading lady Natascia
Diaz deservedly received outstanding
actress for her gorgeous, heartfelt
performance in Brel, winning a
competitive category that included big-
voiced Nova Y. Payton who memorably
played Efe in Signatures Dreamgirls.
But despite Brels big wins, in the
end Dreamgirls took outstanding
resident musical. And after not winning

Cunningham tied with Priscilla Cuellar
for her work in Tobys Legally Blonde.
The dinner theaters rowdy supporters
ensured that these two recipients
received the loudest and longest

Young New York-based playwright
Paul Downs Colaizzo, a big proponent of
same-sex marriage, won outstanding new
work for Really, Really, his play about

reects on long career in
gay sports advocacy

The LGBT sports community has seen
signicant advances in the last few years
with many stories grabbing national
headlines. Outsports called 2011 the
gayest year in sports and that trend
has continued with straight allies and
professional sports athletes stepping up
to support LGBT sports advocacy.
Right in the middle of all the positive
energy, the video emerged of Rutgers
head basketball coach, Mike Rice,
pushing and shoving his players while
tossing out homophobic slurs. Rice was
subsequently red.
On the heels of that came the news
of basketball legend, Magic Johnsons
son coming out as gay and the resulting
backlash from the African-American
community.
Clearly, there is still much work to be done.
Sometimes when we look at the
change that is happening right before
our eyes, we tend to forget about the
long journey that has brought us to
this point. One of the leaders, who
has lead us on the path of impending
acceptance in the sports community, is
from our own backyard.
Pat Grifn was born in Silver Spring,
Md., and graduated from Northwood
High School. While attending the
University of Maryland, she competed in
basketball, eld hockey and swimming
serving as athlete coach of the swim
team in her senior year. She began
her academic career at Wheaton High
School and eventually moved on to the
University of Massachusetts, Amherst
where she is now a Professor Emeritus
in the Social Justice Education Program.
During our conversation, Grifn jokingly
referred to herself as the granny of the
LGBT sports movement. After taking in all
her accomplishments, a better description
of Grifn would be trailblazer.
Grifns LGBT sports advocacy began in
1981 when she served on a sports panel
along with race car driver Janet Guthrie
at a conference in D.C. that was hosted
by the United States Olympic Committee
and the Womens Sports Foundation.
There was nothing on the agenda
about homophobia in sports, Grifn
says. The rst question they asked us
was How do female athletes deect
questions about their femininity? We
all knew what they were really asking.
Grifn decided then that she wanted to
be part of a movement that changed sports.
She eventually became involved with
the It Takes a Team! education campaign
for LGBT issues in sports. The project was
a collaboration between the Womens
Sports Foundation and numerous LGBT
groups and was launched through
fundraising efforts by tennis legend
Martina Navratilova in 1996. Grifn served
as director from 2005 until funding for the
project ended in 2009.
Grifn believes that any social justice
movement, whether it is womens
rights or civil rights, requires the active
participation of the target demographic
along with their allies.
Young people, both male and female,
are the ones leading the change that we
are currently experiencing, Grifn says.
With that premise in mind, Grifn
became the founding director of
GLSENs sports project Changing the
Game, serving from 2009-2011.
Changing the Games mission is to assist
K-12 schools in creating and maintaining
an athletic and physical education climate
that is based on the core principles of
respect, safety and equal access for all,
regardless of sexual orientation or gender
identity/expression.
Grifn presents a mind-boggling
amount of information for the campaign
including resources such as the Team
Respect Challenge and creating a Safe
Sports Space. The resources are broken
apart by roles and are targeted towards
athletes, parents, coaches, athletic
directors, teachers or principals.

Dissonance Dance Theatre has
two presentations this weekend
of Black to Silver: a Black Age
Continuum (Side B), which
organizers say is to showcase
intimate experiences unique
to the African-American LGBT
community through text and
contemporary styles of dance.
Under the direction of
Producing Artistic Director
Shawn Short, the show will
also feature local singer
Moshe Adams. Several of the
performers involved are openly
gay. The event will feature
three new works from Short:
My Intimate Friend, a work
about coping and masturbation;
Zero, a piece about HIV
disclosure and new relationships;
and The First Time, a piece
that celebrates nostalgia and
love between men.
Dissonance bills itself
as Washingtons only
African-American-managed
contemporary ballet company.
Performances are in the
Jack Guidone Theatre at Joy

Pulling out the stops
Its a big time for pipe organ enthusiasts in Washington. Queer virtuoso Cameron
Carpenter makes his debut tonight at the Strathmore (5301 Tuckerman Lane, North
Bethesda) and on April 19, National City Christian Church (5 Thomas Circle, NW),
home to one of the Districts largest pipe organs, resumes its Friday afternoon recital
series after rebuilding signicant parts of its massive instrument damaged in the
earth quake of 2011.
Carpenters performances are known for great technique and expression while
bring showmanship to the organ world. He was the rst organist ever nominated for
a Grammy Award for his solo album Revolutionary and he was recently awarded
the Leonard Bernstein Prize at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in Germany.

Need to ll your movie x? There are plenty opportunities with the Tribeca Film
Festival kicking off this Wednesday, the Northern Virginia Jewish Film Festival starting
on Thursday and the screening of the documentary Married and Counting at the
Creative Alliance (3134 Eastern Ave., Baltimore).
The Tribeca requires a trip to New York but might be worth the effort. This years
festival features several lms with LGBT themes, including G.B.F, a movie following
the experiences of Tanner, the rst openly gay student in his school; Bridegroom
follows the experiences of Shane and Tom, who for six years remained united despite
societal prejudices until a tragic accident puts a halt to their dreams; Will You Still
Love Me Tomorrow? a movie about optometrist Weichung, who is nding married
life difcult and suddenly runs into an old ame; and several more lms addressing

The Northern Virginia Jewish Film Festival screens the movie Let My People
Go! a comedic blend of gay romantic comedy and Jewish family drama. The lm
chronicles the experiences of Reuben, a French-Jewish mailman living in Finland
with his Nordic boyfriend. A ght right before Passover sends Reuben back to Paris
and his family. This particular movie is screening on April 25 at 4:45 p.m. and April 27
at 9:15 p.m at the Angelika Film Center and Caf (2911 District Avenue, Fairfax, Va.)

And in Baltimore, the documentary Married and Counting follows gay couple
Stephen Mosher and Pat Dwyer as they make it their goal to get married in every
state where it is legal. This year marks their 25th anniversary. The event begins at 7:30

to be married to celebrate Question 6s passage in Maryland. Tickets are $7-$12. For

In light of our economys recent re-
cord-low mortgage rates, the desire to
ditch the renting lifestyle and become
a homeowner in D.C. or surrounding
areas makes more sense now than ever.
But even with that attractive nancing,
it can still be difcult to pinpoint your
dream home without exceeding your
budget. Yet with a bit of help from the
right type of loan, your ability to make
your dream of homeownership come
true is a lot easier than you might think.
Our homes tend to be a reection
of ourselves, so when faced with the
choice between renting a place with all
your must haves and buying a place
thats below par, many stick with renting.
What if you could purchase a house that
has all of your must haves and not
break your budget? Well, you can.
The Federal Housing Administration
(FHA), which is part of the Department
of Urban Development (HUD), offers a
Section 203k loan intended to pro-
vide nancing for both the purchase
and renovation of eligible properties.
The 203k program is essentially a dec-
orator-allowance loan that gives you
the ability to make the renovations that
you want, without having to pay out-
of-pocket. These renovations include
things as small as replacing carpets
and painting, up to knocking down
walls and more extensive projects.
So why not just nd a house that
needs some work, and nance your
purchase with a 203k loan to cover the
costs of the improvements youd like
to make? There are multiple benets
to taking advantage of xer-upper
properties. One of the best is that
with a 203k loan, you wont have to
do the renovations yourself. You can
decide which improvements to make,
and then select the contractor of your
choice. The renovations/improvements
must be started within 30 days of clos-
ing, and completed by six months fol-
lowing the closing date. You have the
option to live in the home during the
renovations; however, if the house is
not habitable during the remodeling,
you can also nance up to six months
of advance mortgage payments so that
you can afford the rent or mortgage
of the home you currently live in until
renovations are complete.

Presumably, all rst-time homebuy-
ers have heard the advice about speak-
ing to a lender to get pre-approved
before you start looking. This is good
advice for several reasons:
It sets your expectations about what
you can afford.
It allows you to move quickly to nd
a home youd like to buy.
Sellers will require such a letter
along with your contract offer.
In this column, I want to add some
other guidelines based on my work with
many rst-time buyers. In no particular
order of importance, here they are:
In a sellers market like todays , there
are very few (if any) bargains for buyers.
If something sounds too good to be
true, it probably is.
Similarly, if something looks too
good to be true for the price, it prob-
ably is. A picture is worth a thousand
lies; thats why God invented wide-an-
gle lenses.
However, its also a bad sign if there
are no pictures in the listing or only
a picture of the outside especially if
the home has been on the market for
a while.
If a home has been on the market for
more than 90 days, theres probably some-
thing wrong with it, or its overpriced.
The amount of drama in a real estate
transaction increases exponentially as
you approach the settlement date.
Something will always go wrong the
day before settlement.
Buying and selling a home is like a
simultaneous marriage (for the buyer)
and divorce (for the seller). In the same
way that you wouldnt want to use the
same lawyer for that, you dont want to
have the same real estate agent try to
represent both sides of a transaction.
Loan ofcers get paid to make loans;
underwriters get paid to prevent bad
loans from being made. Sometimes
loan ofcers and underwriters at the
same lending company appear to be
working at cross-purposes.
Appraisers and inspectors are just
doing their jobs, though it often seems
they are working against you. Since
youre paying for them as the buyer,
theyre actually working for you to make
sure you dont buy an overpriced lemon.
The most important guideline is this:
Keep your sense of humor throughout
the home-buying process. It will reduce
your stress through one of the most
potentially stressful (and largest) nan-
cial transactions of your life. And it will
keep you from getting too attached to
a property in case it doesnt work out.

Understand the renovation
process before you DIY

As we head into the spring sea-
son, many begin to think about a new
home, fresh renovation or selling their
existing home. Lately, we have been
hearing from clients and friends that
they watch home renovation shows on
networks specializing in home searches
and sales.
We, too, at The Goodhart Group
have a slight addiction to these types of
shows, but what person in the real estate
industry isnt interested in all things to do
with the home? However, we have be-
gun to notice a slight impact this type of
television is having on our clients. Many
have looked toward home renovation
rather than selling as an option and even
want to try it themselves as they have
seen many do on television.
While we love the idea of custom-
izing your home to what you need,
make sure that you do your homework
and understand the time and money it
takes to renovate. Remember, televi-
sion has the beauty of editing, but in
real life these things can drag on for
more than an hour-long episode.
We suggest touching base with a
professional, whether that is a contrac-
tor or an experienced Realtor, to get
their thoughts on what can be done to
your home. Often, real estate agents
can be a great resource because they
can provide guidance or suggestions
on what updates will add the most val-
ue to your home from a resale perspec-
tive. Countless times we have walked
into remodels and immediately real-
ized that due to poor design and con-
structions decisions, the homeowners
may never see their money back.
In addition to renovation being a
topic of conversation, we have also
noticed a different attitude from home
purchasers in the way they search for
homes as well as the offers they submit.
While these types of shows provide
a fantastic glimpse into the real estate
transaction, prospective buyers must
always keep in mind that these are
different markets and we never know
all the details of the home being pur-
chased. At the end of the day, it is TV
where prompting from producers and
edits create a vision of a house hunt or
home purchase that may not be entire-
ly accurate.
Although we would love the ability
to cut, paste and delete some scenarios
in life, its just not going to happen that
way. In the end, we cant get enough of
this type of television ourselves. Just re-
member that it is always smart to consult
a real estate professional in your market
before making any drastic decisions.

Sellers may rejoice. Although the
weather is just heating up, the markets
temperature is well ahead of the curve
this year. Fabulous interest rates are
keeping buyers excited, and the low
inventory means it is time for sellers to
capitalize on demand.
Washington, D.C. real estate has
outperformed the nation through the
recession and recovery and continues
to grow. This is certainly still a govern-
ment town but the last several years
have brought more in technology and
the arts. Entrepreneurs and creative
types are ocking to D.C.
This is a sellers market, and our buy-
er clients have been highly cognizant
of this as we go into the busiest time of
year in the housing market.
Sellers who take a hard line stance
against losing a dime on their current
homes could do better to focus on
capitalizing on the exciting opportuni-
ties in this marketplace. Sellers need
to understand that as mortgage rates
climb back to normal levels, their
purchasing power is eroded on their
next home.
Similarly, the purchasing power of
their buyers is as well unless salaries
keep pace with mortgage rates, buyers
have the same monthly budget at 3.5
percent and at 7 percent, but more of
those payments go to paying interest
at the higher rates and less to equity. In
other words, it is OK to sell your home
at a price thats close to that which you
paid, even if you do not come out with
every dollar you invested. That is be-
cause you have an opportunity to buy
at prices similar to the ones at which
you bought last time, but with a much
lower rate and move into the place
you want to live in.
Furthermore, your house may be
worth more than you think. The days
of bidding wars and escalation clauses
are back. The key to selling your home
for the most its worth right now is the
proper price and the right kind of mar-
keting. You need to work with an agent
who knows what price will inspire buy-
ers to bite and how to make your home
look its best.
As much as people like to think oth-
erwise, buying and selling a home is
emotional. Polish your home before
you put it on the market. Like dating,
you want to put your best foot forward.
Presentation is everything. If you pres-
ent well, you may achieve a competitive
bidding scenario in which buyers waive
certain contingencies and shorten time
frames to provide you with more of a
sure thing. You can demand better-
qualied buyers if you have people
falling over themselves to buy your
home. Picture a dating show with many
bachelorettes wooing only one bach-
elor, but with buyers competing on one
property and trying win over a seller.
It is easy to understand why buyers
get stuck on certain numbers and pric-
es, but homeowners are usually better
off than if they were renting in one of
the D.C.-areas very expensive rent-
als. If, after seven years of ownership,
your loss is a few percent in transaction
costs, but youve saved in not having
to pay non-tax deductible rent, youve
won this round.
It is also easy to understand why sell-
ers get stuck on certain numbers, but
value is a moment in time. We tell our
clients to live where they want to live
and to move when they want to move.
Your primary home as not just an in-
vestment, but rather an investment
in you. Smart sellers are leaving what
happened in 2005 where it belongs in
2005 and are looking forward to the
next phase of their lives in their new
homes. Its time to seize this fabulous
opportunity in our sellers market and
get moving.
