The big prize

Teachers for Change and Kopskuif-Onnies is a project by Media 24 Weeklies, You, Drum and Huisgenoot that aims to provide South African teachers with valuable technological tools to empower them. After advertisng it in the magazines, teachers who had made and is making a difference in their schools and communities, were nominated to qualify winning a big technology prize for themselves and their schools. Countrywide 12 teachers from 12 schools were selected as winners, in thiscase Ms Leshilo Reshoketsoe Matlale from Selala Primary School at GaSelala between Burgersfort and Moroke was nominated by the school principal, Mrs Makofane. After being notified that she was a winner, representatives of Media 24 Weeklies as well asi the project partners, Oxford University Press and iSchoolAfrica visited the schoolto hand over the prize on Wednesday. The event was also attended by representatives of neighbouring schools and the local government intitutions. The prize the school won through Ms Matlales participation in the project consists of: An Apple iPad lab worth R120 000. The lab has 20 iPads, each with a cover, 16 GB memory and WiFi; a MacBook Pro laptop and a multi-adaptor, a projector; and an iTunes budget big enough to download as many educational apps as the teacher might need. The winning teacher will receive an iPad to use in the classroom and for personal use, courtesy of iSchoolAfrica. The teacher will be trained to use the iPad as an educational tool and shown how to integrate it successfully into the South African curriculum. The teacher will also become part of the iSchoolAfrica iPad community, where they can share skills and best practice. A needs analysis will be done by Oxford University Press of what the school needs in terms of textbooks and study guides. R20 000 worth of textbooks, reading books, study guides and dictionaries will be supplied after the analysis. Schools will also be included in the Oxford Focus School project, which offers a range of benefits including teacher training workshops. More than 100 schools in South Africa use iPads and the results speak volumes. The world is being revolutionised by the iPad and if SAs children cant experience it first-hand theyll be left behind, says Michelle Lissoos, head of iSchoolAfrica. We believe iPads provide new and engaging ways to learn and understand complex concepts. It helps kids to access, analyse and integrate information required to live, learn and work in the 21st century essential skills for finding a job after school. Teachers are noticing significant behavioural shifts in learners, such as increased attendance, motivation and involvement.

Three men were jailed for life by the Limpopo High Court last week Thursday for the murder of Congress of the People (Cope) MP Jack Tolo, Limpopo police said. Police spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi said Peter Motebele, 36, was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder and 20 years for housebreaking and robbery. Oscar Choma, 33, was sentenced to life imprisonment and 15 years, and Alpheus Molepo, 46, was sentenced to life and 25 years. A fourth man, King Solomon Nkosi, 40, also implicated in the murder, was still in hospital under police guard for a serious chronic illness. He would be tried alone after he recuperated. Seven people were initially arrested for the crime.Three were later acquitted. Tolo was murdered at his home in Ga-Masha, Sekhukhune, on 21 August 2011. His family was tied up before he was shot, and the attackers demanded money, jewellery, and cellphones. His cellphone was later recovered from one the men. Cope in Limpopo said it was satisfied with the outcome of the trial. We are pleased with the investigative work of the police to a large extent, said spokesperson Motlatjo Thetjeng. We still believe that more could have been done that would have ensured that the other three that were acquitted were also put behind bars for life.

Life sentence for Tolos killers

President Jacob Zuma officially renamed the Department of Correctional Services Pretoria Management Area to the Kgoshi Mampuru II Management Area on Wednesday. Addressing dignitaries such as the Minister of Correctional Services, Mr Sbu Ndebele and other Ministers, Gauteng Premier, deputy ministers, the Executive Mayor of Sekhukhune District Municipality, the municipalitys Speaker and the members of Mayoral Committee of Sekhukhune District Municipality, the Correctional Services Commissioner and all senior officials, the president said the event formed part of the celebration of Freedom Month which is also Heroes Month in our country. This is sadly the month during which we lost selfless national heroes such as former ANC President Oliver Reginald Tambo, former SACP general secretary and Mkhonto Wesizwe Chief of Staff Chris Hani and the young Solomon Mahlangu who was executed here at Pretoria Central Prison for fighting for the freedom we enjoy today. At the same time, April is the month of freedom. It is the month during which we made history by burying a painful history and began to build the future together. It is the month during which South Africans elevated reconciliation and forgiveness, and we decided to emphasise our unity in diversity and minimise that which divides us. Part of that reconciliation includes the renaming of geographic and place names as well as landmarks. This is meant to reflect our diverse political and historical heritage and to heal the wounds of the past. As South Africans from all walks of life, regardless of the role we played in history or what we believed in then, have a responsibility to respect and acknowledge the past, celebrate the present and build the future together.Government has an extensive on-going heritage programme that

Pretoria Prison renamed after Kgoshi Mampuru II

includes the upgrading and declaration of historic sites to ensure a more representative and inclusive South African history and heritage. More importantly, this also contributes towards shared values and a common national identity in the country. Furthermore, the building and maintenance of new monuments and historic sites has a greater potential to stimulate economic activity and create much needed jobs in communities where these sites are located. These sites will also contribute towards cultural tourism both domestically and internationally. We will work together with the people of South Africa and the world to ensure that we preserve and promote our rich cultural heritage. We regard this work as central towards transformation, nation building, national identity and building a socially cohesive South African society that is non-racial, nonsexist, democratic, united and prosperous. The renaming of the Pretoria Management Area falls within that category of promoting a shared heritage President Zuma then explained further Kgosi Mampuru was hanged on 22 November, 1883, here in Pretoria prison, which makes it fitting to name this area after him. In the Book Long Walk to Freedom, President Mandela states the following: South Africas history includes many famous political trials. There was the case of Mampuru, the rightful heir to the Bapedi throne, who was executed for public violence and revolt and murder of Sekhukhune in 1883 and who gave Commandant General P.J Joubert and his burgers a lesson in mobile warfare.. The new name should create a general feeling of belonging, because it captures our history and creates a context of relevance. We are pleased therefore, to launch Freedom Month with such a historic event.

Young women and youth from Kalkfontein and Ga-Rantho in Ngwaabe will EVA Smile
Poverty and unemployment in GaMasha in Ngwaabe, Steelpoort was recently dealt a serious blow. Thanks to Two Rivers Platinum for their innovative thinking and genuine community development programmes. EVA Smile Car Wash, unique to this area, was launched by the Business Leader of Two Rivers Platinum Mine today. Receiving their first client, who happened to be Mr Adriaan de Beer, the Business Leader at Two Rivers Platinum, Francis Moshidi, one of the co-owners of the EVA Smile Car Wash said, Today I am living testimony of perseverance. Nobody ever thought I would come this far. My dreams has come true, thanks to Two Rivers Youth Entrepreneurship Development Programme. I hope this will now motivate other young people in my community to stand up and take opportunities afforded to us by the mines in our area. The total project sponsorship, which was mainly focussed towards the construction of the modern car wash, consisting of ten wash bays and wendy-house for equipment storage, consumables as well as high power car washing equipment, is worth Ninety Thousand Rand (R90,000). Although this is just the beginning, we can now see the light at the end of the tunnel. TRP gave us wings and we can only carry on from here, said another co-owner of EVA Smile Car Wash, Violet Matenche. The project has changed my life for the better. Being a women-owned enterprise from a rural set-up like ours, especially where women are bread winners in several households, it will benefit more than just a few families and also give rural women hope. We hope other mining operations in the area can emulate what TRP is continuing to do for our communities, concluded Miss Matenche. The project has created five new job opportunities for youth from the local communities. The new owners of the car wash, namely, Violet Matenche and Francis were drawn from Ga- Rantho Village and Ga-Masha (Kalkfontein). Having listened to the immediate communities cry for employment and having acknowledged that any single entity alone cannot create the required jobs or absorb all the unemployed youth in the area, it identified various business opportunities on the mine and helped establish a various SMME, gave them the necessary training and skills transfer and donated basic equipment, kitting their members and employees with safety gear as well as facilitating the registration of the cooperatives. The small micro and medium enterprises (SMMEs) have been accepted as the engine of economic growth and for promoting equitable development. The major advantage of the sector is its employment potential at low capital cost. The current National Development Plan (NDP) is challenging all South Africans to align with the government vision and the establishment of such initiatives will strengthen the NDPs vision. In order to deal effectively with challenges of inequality, poverty and unemployment in the country, we must assist by supporting the SMME sector said Adriaan de Beer, the Business Leader of Two Rivers Platinum. At Two Rivers we dont just produce quality grades of platinum, we also produce quality and sustainable SMMEs in our local communities. This in turn creates
Francis Moshidi receiving payment from the projects first client, Rocco Stoffberg. The car wash is a modern facility with equipment worth R90 000. Moshidi is one of the coowners of the EVA Smile Car Wash.

additional jobs for the unemployed from the local communities. And we believe that Two Rivers can only become sustainable and succeed as a mine, if the communities around it are also stable and successful, concluded Mr de Beer. Two Rivers Platinum, is not just a wellmanaged and profitable mine in the Eastern Limb, it continues to lead the way in ensuring that the communities around its operation also benefits from its success. We have established similar initiatives in the past few years and this included establishing and supporting local SMMEs providing services to the mine and the local communities, ranging from waste management and recycling, steel repairs and steel manufacturing. We strongly believe that the success of these initiatives depends on the support they receive from the local communities, employees, the municipalities and the

local mines. As a collective, the mine operations and local government can do more for the local communities, said Francois van Heerden, the Mining Leader and the car wash sponsor from Two Rivers Platinum. Over the years, companies imported steel manufactured play equipment for recreational purposes and donated them to various community based organizations. This deprived local entities and individuals job opportunities and most importantly depriving the local economy a chance to grow. TRP have broken this cycle by facilitating the establishment of a successful women led SMME specializing in the repairs and manufacturing of steel products. The local mines can now procure steel repair services from an empowered entity and the communities can procure garden furniture, braai stands, recreation equipment manufactured locally.

I would like to see people get the necessary technical skills to not only make a living as artisans, but also be able to apply their knowledge as some will become entrepreneurs. This is one of the wishes of Mr Steve Makgoba, Community Social Responsibility (CSR) Manager of Xstrata Alloys. Trained as a metallurgist, Steve started working at Tubatse Chrome and later moving to Xstrata Lydenburg Works. He has since travelled the world. He is currently based in Rustenburg, but is still a regular face in the Steelpoort area. My vision is that community members should have technical skills to occupy responsible positions in mines. We should create role models, he explains. In many places around the world where you find owners of fabrication workshops who are doing well, youll see the owner has the technical background to understand the fundamentals of his business. That is what I would like to see. Not only artisans, but entrepreneurs benefiting from technical skills to help make their businesses successful.

A vision to empower
The high rate of unemployment in this area combined with a low rate of education was the motivation for the establishment of the Training Centre. At the Training Centre various short courses as well as learnership training is provided. A bridging course for post-matric candidates has also been established to help improve the vital subjects needed for artisan training. We will continue to invite other mining operations to join hands with us through this Training Centre. The results of which will improve the social aspects of the broader Sekhukhune area. While at the Training Centre last week, Steve stopped at the post-matric class. Giving them the message Stand and deliver. At the core of the message was the fact that no matter where you come from and what people might think, you are able to stand up and deliver the unexpected in an exceptional way. This is the heartbeat of Training Centre to deliver not only education, but also a better life!

Right: Mr Steve Makgoba, CSR General Manager. He was born in Schoonoord Sekhukhune and understands the challenges local communities face in the area. That is why the Eastern Limb Training Centre is very close to his heart.

Providing the training needed

The Eastern Limb Training Centre (ELTC) was established in 2005. It has since then developed in various ways to provide quality education and training. At ELTC we focus on providing quality Engineering Training to the Mining Sector, Construction and Private Sector, explains Mr. Abson Thomas, HRD Practitioner Mechanical. We accept that people are a valuable resource and therefore we are committed to creating a safe and healthy working environment where safety is a fundamental to training in all trades and forms the core theme of all training programs. We also promote mutual respect and trust. Currently Xstrata runs the ELTC in-house. This ensures that a high level of quality training is provided and it remains relevant to what the industry requires. Engineering learnerships that is currently facilitated by the ELTC includes Electrical, Fitter/Machinist, Boilermaker/Plater, Millwright - Electro Mechanic. Short Engineering courses include: Electrical Operative, Fitter Operative, Boilermaker/Plater Operative, Engineering Portable Skills, Basic/Advanced Welding, Torch Cutting, Basic Hydraulics, Basic Pneumatics, NATED N1 & N2, Post Matrics Mathematics and Science as well as the National Tooling Initiative Program (NTIP). The ELTC has an ISO9001:2008 quality management system accreditation. Currently the ELTC not only provides training for Xstrata employees or apprentices. The Centres customer base includes Dwarsrivier Mine, Two Rivers Platinum Mine, Samancor, Modikwa Platinum Mine and ASA Metals. Industrial or mining companies are invited to approach the ELTC to assist with the training of learnership candidates or provide short courses where needed.

Get the training needed

We are centrally situated in the Steelpoort area which minimises companies expenditure on training, transport and accommodation significantly less than sending trainees to facilities in Gauteng. There are currently 160 active engineering learnership learners in the system. They are all from the areas surrounding the ELTC. A total of 259 community learners have completed training to satisfy the demand from Engineering contractors involved with the Lion Phase 2 Project and other contractors in the area. The National Tooling Initiative program is one of the ways in which Xstrata helps to contribute towards South Africas technologically underdeveloped tooling industry. This is in co-operation with government initiatives. A total of 25 learners have to date finished this course. NATED N1 & N2 learners receive assistance in mathematics, engineering science, engineering drawings, electrical trade theory, platers theory, fitting and machining theory. The aim of the post-matric program is to create a pool of Post Matric

(continued from previous page)

Learners within the community with the necessary subjects passed Mathematics and Science at a satisfactory level. These learners can then be promoted for entering into bursary programs. The Building Construction or Wet skills program includes brick laying, civils and shatter hand training. A total of 344 learners have successfully completed this program to date and many of them are involved with the Lion Phase 2 project. To me seeing people going out and coming back as bigger people

through the skills theyve gained is so satisfying, says Abson. Through the ELTC skills are provided to community members. Many more people are being trained than can currently be permanently employed. This however gives community members who previously had no chance of being employed the opportunity to search for a position within the mining or construction industry with the skills theyve acquired at the ELTC. Do you think Chris Hanis killers

Twenty years ago Chris Hani was assassinated in his driveway in Boksburg. Hani spent 30 years in excile leading the ANCs military wing, MK. He was named one of the greatest revolutionaries the country has ever known, by former President Nelson Mandela. His death was plotted and executed by Januzs Walus and Clive Derby-Lewis who wanted to mobilise white people into rebellion and destabilise political negotiations during the early 1990s. Derby-Lewis gave Walus the gun which he used to assassinate Hani. Derby-Lewis wife assisted them with names and addresses of possible targets including Nelson Mandela, Steve Tshwete and Mac Maharaj. Hani was the SACP general secretary at the time of his death. One of his killers Derby-Lewis (now 77) is applying for release on parole. His latest attempt is the last in a whole string of applications over an almost 20 year period. He was convicted within six months of the murder and his sentence turned into life imprisonment after the death penalty was abolished in 1995. At the Truth and Reconciliation Committees amnesty hearings both Derby-Lewis and Walus applications were rejected. Derby-Lewis appealed this decision in the Cape High Court in 2000. His bid failed. In 2009 the North Gauteng High Court did not grant him leave for parole although Derby-Lewis lawyer argued that he is older than 65 and had been rehabilitated. In 2010 he again applied for parole after having served more than 15 years of his sentence and being over 70. In 2011 he made an unsuccessful attempt for medical parole. He has cancer, hypertension and gangrene according to his application. This week Derby-Lewis latest attempt to secure medical parole was denied by the Medical Advisory Board. Derby-Lewis now want to make use of the initiative from Correctional Services Minister Sbu Ndebele through which victim-offender dialogue is facilitated. The idea of the programme is to assist with the problem of over-crowded prisons as early release may be negotiated after reconciliation between the offenders and the victims. Derby-Lewis now wants to meet Hanis wife Limpho to apologise for his role in the assassination. She has however reacted that she wants no part of his plans. The SACP and the family has consistently stood against any parole possibility for the convicted killers. The SACP believes there are still too many loose ends surrounding the case. We asked readers what they think about the possible release of Clive Derby-Lewis on parole?

Ms Vinolia Maroga said: They must release him to die at home.

Mr Jabu Phasha said: Keep him in jail. He killed somone so he must serve his sentence. Die in jail!

Ms Precious Bhembe siad: He is old, he is sick, let him out. The guy is dying, there is no use keeping him in jail.

Me. Daphn Rheeders en me. Annatjie Rheeders s: Hulle kan hom n vergunning doen en hom laat gaan op parool. Veral omdat hy siek is. Kanker is n lelike ding.

Me. Theresa Correia s: My man is vermoor, so ek weet hoe dit vir die familie voel. As iemand jammer is daaroor vat dit nie die seer weg nie. So hy moet maar sit. Ek het geen simpatie met hom nie. Hy het n keuse gemaak.

Mr Sylvester Hlabathi and Mr William Maphanga said: They have to give him parole. Lots of guys are out with sick parole - look at Shabir Shaik. But the question on the other hand is must everyone who gets sick in jail get parole?

should be considered for parole?

Mr Tinashe Magwenzi said: He must rot in jail! He left a young wife and kids without a father. If it was his family how would he feel?

Mnr Samuel Mola s: Hy moet uitkom. Dis al lank wat hy in die tronk bly. Mense moet hom vergewe.

Me. Linda van Jaarsveld s: 20 Jaar is n lang tyd van waar die misdaad gepleeg is en hy het al baie lank in die tronk gesit. Daar is mense wat met moord vir baie minder tyd wegkom as wat hy gesit het. By haar is Danika.

Mr Peter Majoro said: That man deserve parole like the way politicians get when they are sick. He did a bad thing, but should get parole at his age. He should also go and ask the family for forgiveness and give all additional information he has available.

Bo: Mnr. Bennie Jansen van Vuuren en mnr. Reinhardt Ehlers s: Gee hom parool. Dis hoe dit in die nuwe Suid-Afrika werk. As jy so lank gesit het soos hy nou al in die tronk is, is jou kanse goed om nog n politieke loopbaan ook te h! Dis feite!

Mr Solly Nkhoma said: He must get out. He is sick and served a long time. He will not murder again if he is let out now.

Mr Ben Maroga said: We are presently talking about reconciliation. Shabir Shaik, Selebe etc. was given medical parole. Lets just give him a chance in life.

Mr Prince Khunou said: With cases of murder it is good to be strict. I think somebody should serve their full sentence. He should only be able to be considered for parole after 25 years of prison time. We should be like Botswana where criminals get what they deserve, then the crime might also go down. With him are Lebo, Rati, Kgotso and Chichi.

Mnr Michael Graham s: n Mens kan baie verander in 20 jaar. n Mens moet hom n kans gee.

Mr Frans Mabawa said: What hes done is wrong, but he should get parole because he is sick. He is a human being. Hes learned a lesson after all these years.

Caring for your community through cleaning

On 6 April the Tubatse Interdenomination Youth Development Group hosted a cleaning campaign. The days event took place in Praktiseer and approximately 100 volunteers assisted to cleaning the streets from the police station to the start of Shoshomelo village. Volunteers came from Praktiseer, Manoke and Ga Mashamothane. I believe that if you can clean your environment, you will be able to socially clean up as well, said Mr Collen Mojela who assisted to organise the day. The group was taught how to look after their immediate environment. They thanked Mr Kwaito Maome, a local businessman who sponsored bread rolls and cold drinks for them. They also expressed their appreciation of the support from Greater Tubatse Municipality and the GTM Youth Council. After the cleaning for the day was done, the group divided into teams who performed various dramas to create awareness of social issues in the community.

Women get some help

Lehlabula Cleaning and Construction from Eerstegeluk and Makolas Car Wash from Magimeng Village in the Steelpoort Area recently benefitted from local business support. Female entrepreneurs Catherine Lekwadi from Makolas Car Wash and Fast Maimela from Lehlabula Cleaning and Construction both use Thorburn Security Solutions donated carts or also called Thorburn karretjies for their work environments. Lehlabula Cleaning and Construction is a female owned business owned by Fast Maimela. It was established in August2012 when her business potential was identified by Tubatse Chrome Plant and Lehlabula Cleaning was contracted to provide cleaning and gardening services at the Tubatse Chrome Plant with the added responsibility of cleaning the main road between Tubatse Chrome Village and the Plant. She would be using her cart to transport equipment and refuse bags in the Tubatse Plant and also along the main road. Makolas Car Wash is a newly established business owned by Catherine Lekwadi . It is on the route between Eastern Chrome Mines (ECM) Doornbosch Mine and the Ribacross junction in the Magimeng Village. She uses the cart to transport her washing machines, buckets and accessories to the washing bays. In the next 14 days the Makolas Car Wash will also receive signage, t shirts for employees and braai facilities for customers from Thorburn Security Solutions as an enterprise development project . The Thorburn karretjies will become a local brand in Steelpoort and envisaged to be rolled out in adjacent areas as far afield as Phalabora and Middelburg coal fields in a joint effort between Tubatse Chrome Plant and Thorburn Security Solutions a local entrepreneur will be trained to manufacture these carts locally and a sales and marketing drive will support his efforts. Local businesses are encouraged to support this project. (Information and photographs: Dolf Scheepers)

Problems spotted
Although repairing the potholes in Marone Street is a posititve thing, the lack of traffic control is a headache. The contruction team on Wednesday blocked the road completely without proper signage or traffic control. This group was caught red handed dumping illegally next to the road leading off Oorbietjie Street towards Themba Garage. They took their time to dump the rubbish in an area that has repeatedly been declared as a nodumping zone. The landfill site is available to dump rubbish.

Maokeng Secondary renovated with donations from Germany

In one room you could not even stand anymore. Deep holes in the ground made lessons in there impossible. This and two other classrooms in a bad state at Maokeng Senior Secondary School in Kgautwane were renovated during the last easter holidays. Due to the poor finance situation of the school, it was not possible for them to improve the rooms from the schools budget. So, German volunteer Anne Ellermann, working at Maokeng for one year, decided to fundraise in Germany for the renovation of the rooms with success. The school that she attended herself as a learner until last year, the Ohmoor-Gymnasium in Hamburg, started some different measures to collect money for Maokeng. They sold cakes during the breaks or donated the money they earned from the ticket sales of a drama play. With that money, it was possible to buy the building materials needed. It was bought at Builders Market, who unfortunately did not support the project themselves. During the last days of the holiday, five German volunteers staying at Kgautwane Community Development Center (KCDC) started the renovation. They filled the holes in the floors with cement, also repaired the walls, painted the rooms completely new and fitted two new doors. All together, they spent more than 120 hours working at Maokeng. The tools were borrowed from the friendly local community. After the renovation has been finished, the rooms changed their outward appearance completely and are now fully usable for lessons again. Even if the renovation is already a big step forward, there are still some rooms in a bad state. It will be highly appreciated if anyone can contribute more donations to improve the other rooms, Anne Ellermann told Platinum Gazette, however, I hereby want to thank OhmoorGymnasium for their big help to improve the situation at Maokeng Secondary School.

The hard work by the volunteers paid off. The classrooms looked brand new at the start of the new school term.

Now in its third year, the project builds on the strong foundation laid by the SA Society of Music Teachers (SASMT) 25 years ago when fledgling musicians competed for the first time on a national basis. A special incentive created four years ago for developmental groups from disadvantaged communities, enables these candidates to compete on equal terms with participants from other communities. The closing date for this years competition is Friday, 19 April 2013. Auditions in all the main centres will commence at the beginning of June. About 60 candidates will eventually be selected to compete over four rounds at the Hugo Lambrechts Auditorium in Parow, Cape Town, from 16 to 20 September. Medals, prize-money totalling more than R80 000 and other attractive prizes are at stake. Candidates will compete in four categories: Piano , Strings , Woodwind & Brass Instruments, and Other Instruments (percussion, recorder, classical guitar and harp), with a sub-category for developmental groups. The only condition is that candidates must still be 13 (14 for developmental groups) at the time of the competition. Full particulars and entry forms are available at www.samrohubertvanderspuy.wordpress.com Enquiries can be directed to Kathleen du Plessis (between 10:00 and 18:00) at 021 939 9105, or in writing to clay.kathleen@gmail.com, or Hilda Boonzaaier (20:00 21:00) at 021 945 3861.

Easter Tourism in Limpopo doing well

The Tourism Industry in Limpopo got its fair share of the pie during the Easter weekend, with tourism establishments in the Province recording high occupancy rate while day visits to recreational facilities again proved to be a favorite amongst locals and VFRs (Visiting Friends and Relatives). The Kruger National Park was amongst the biggest winner as it recorded a total of 36 046 visitors between Thursday 28 March and Monday 1 April in the park, with -/+10 000 coming through Orpen, Phalaborwa, Punda and Pafuri gates. There has been a decline in terms of visitors to Limpopo Wildlife Resorts which recorded a total of 5 538 visitors this year as compared to the 10 403 visitors last year during the same period, this is largely due to the floods damage that the Resorts experienced this year which lead to the closure of Mphephu Resort and Eclipse Camp at Nwanedi Resort our biggest cash cows . Mphephu and Nwanedi Resorts jointly welcomed 6 997 visitors last year during the same period. This year Nwanedi Resort welcomed 1 442 visitors at the Resort of which most of them were day visitors. Limpopo Tourism Agency is working around the clock to ensure that these Resorts are being brought back to full functionality so that our visitors and tourists can enjoy their favorite holiday destinations. Limpopo Tourism Agency CEO Mr. Nocks Seabi would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the Agency, Board, Industry and its staff members, to express heartfelt condolences to the families, the Ministry of Defence and colleagues of the five SANDF members killed in a helicopter crash in the Kruger National Park on Saturday. As Limpopo Tourism Agency, we wish to thank all the people including the Service and Hospitality Sectors of our peaceful province to continue spreading their warm arms as they welcomed visitors into the province. We are of the view that this made us good hosts and will result in repeated visits thereby increasing the economy of the Province, said Seabi. (Information: Limpopo Tourism Agency).

A seed was planted during National Water Week

The Department of Water Affairs, the Sekhukhune District Municipality, the Greater Tubatse Municipality, Schools in Ngwaabe and Two Rivers Platinum ensured that they plant a seed in the future of the Grade 10, 11 and 12 learners who are currently doing Mathematics and Science subjects in the local schools. Delivering a highly motivational speech and representing the Executive Mayor of Sekhukhune District Municipality, the Acting Executive Mayor, Cllr. Fanie Lekola, challenged the learners to take advantage of the existing opportunities in the sciences discipline by focusing on their studies so that they can future assist in helping government and their communities in dealing with the current climate changes. At Two Rivers Platinum, we ensure that all our SLP related projects are well researched and thus link with each other for the greater benefit of our business as well as that of our stakeholders. Our recent partnership with the Department of Water Affairs during this years Annual National Water Week, which benefited over a thousand mathematics and science learners in Grade 10, 11 and 12 at De Hoop Dam, was just another example of how we relate to our communities and the general environment, said Bethrum Dzonzi, Public and Corporate Affairs Manager at Two Rivers Platinum. In addition to the privilege of witnessing progress made at the much talked about presidential project and the rapid rise of the water level at De Hoop Dam, the learners had lunch with the VIPs and those who provided the correct answers during the Q&A session which followed the special mini classes conducted by TRPs environmental specialists and metallurgist, walked away with school bags and t-shirts donated by Two Rivers Platinum through their CSI programme. Still an opportunity to run the Comrades
Substitution process now open
Its that time of the year again when Comrades Marathon runners who were unable to enter for the 2013 Ultimate Human Race during the official entry period (September November 2012) have an opportunity to still be part of the great race through the official Substitution process. Thanks to the Comrades Marathon Associations (CMA) Substitution Rule, these Comrades Marathon hopefuls have from now until 30 April 2013 to substitute an entrant who has withdrawn, or intends to withdraw from the 2013 edition of the epic road-running challenge. The Comrades Marathon Substitution Rule was introduced for the very first time last year and now forms part of the official race rules of the worlds biggest ultramarathon. The Substitution process officially opened on 1 April and will close on 30 April 2013. The completed application forms as specified in the Substitution Rule must reach the CMA office by 30 April 2013. There will be no extension of this deadline. Athletes still intending to submit Substitution application forms are advised to visit the official Comrades Marathon website at www.comrades.com for the downloadable forms and the comprehensive list of the rules and regulations which govern the Substitution process. Race Director Johan Van Staden says, We received just over 500 Substitution applications last year and anticipate many more for the 2013 race. The Substitution Rule has been very well received by our runners and will guarantee a higher number of starters outside the Durban City Hall on 2 June 2013.
