1. I am looking for the book Educational renewal: better teachers, better schools by John Goodlad. I believe it was published in the 1990s. a. Is this title available at WSU? If yes, where is it located (library location and call number)? Yes. The title is available at WSU. One copy is located in the Dunbar Library 3rd floor and five copies are located in the ERC Professional books collection. The call number is LB 1715.G52 1994. I began my search for this information by completing an advanced search on the WSU catalog page. First I completed an author search by typing in John Goodland. This gave me no results; during part b I realized I was misspelling the authors last name. I then completed a title search and typed in (Educational renewal better teachers better schools), this gave me the above information. b. Is it also available at OhioLINK union catalog? If yes, how many libraries own it? Yes. The title is available through the OhioLINK union catalog. 38 libraries own copies of this title. I began my search from the WSU Library home page. From there I was able to click the OhioLINK link. This directed me to the OhioLINK home page

where I was able to choose the OhioLINK Library Catalog system. First I completed an author search using the advanced search setting. I typed (Goodland, John) and this gave me 1 item titled Seven held at the Ohio Depository Northeast KSU. This is where I realized I had been misspelling the authors last name. I could not figure out how I was able to get results when I search by title but none when I completed an author search. Secondly I completed a title search by typing (Educational renewal better teachers better schools), this resulted in the above information. c. Are there other items available at WSU by this author? How many? Any media? Yes. There are other titles at WSU Library by this author. 107 titles are available, 44 of those titles he wrote solo. 7 of the titles are media. I completed a search on the WSU catalog site by typing the authors correctly spelled name, Goodlad, John. 4 names appeared and the third name on the list was Goodlad, John I. the author I was searching. I narrowed the search to include only books he wrote himself. This gave me 44 titles. I then narrowed the search further by selecting the drop-down box for specific collection areas and chose media. This displayed the 7 media titles that are available. 2. My students are having trouble learning how to tell time on analog clocks. The textbook and other print resources are not helping them with this. a. Does WSU have any media or educational games that might help them? Yes. There are non-print resources available to assist with teaching about time. I completed a search using the advanced keyword search option. I typed in ANY (analog clock) AND ANY (teaching), this resulted in only one title. I then did a search typing in, How to tell time no results were found. I searched again by typing (analog clocks), this resulted in books and nonprint resources. I narrowed this search by selected only items available in the ERC collection. This gave 5 items that are a part of a series. The final search was completed by typing (telling time) and selected only ERC items, this resulted in the above titles with the addition of one new one. b. If yes, list three items found (title, call number, and library location)

1. Telling time practice board [chart], QB209.5 T45 2000z, ERC General Non-print 2. Duration of time, QB209.5 T56 2000z bk.1 bk.5, ERC General Non-print material kits contain book, freestanding boards w/ interactive analog clocks and flip cards 3. Time [game]: equivalency puzzles, QB209.5 T56 2009, ERC General Non-print develops basic skills of telling time 3. I need to learn more about the subject of podcasting. a. How many titles are listed under this subject in the WSU catalog? Are related subjects available as well? If yes, are additional titles listed? 3 titles are listed under the subject podcasting. Yes, related subjects are available as well. The third title listed had a link that displayed related search words form the Library of Congress. No, there were no additional titles listed. I completed this search by typing in (podcasting) and selecting the subject search option. b. How many are available in an electronic resource? 21 titles are available in an electronic form. I was able to narrow the results from a by choosing to do a title search and choosing the Ohio electronic search option. c. If this term is repeated as a keyword search, how many results are found? When repeating as a keyword search it results in 65 related titles. I completed a search by typing in (podcasting), this resulted in books on blogging, alternative media, connecting online learning and copy rights for schools.

4. I remember seeing a movie a while back, but I cannot remember the title. I borrowed it from the Educational Resource Center at WSU. The movie was a foreign film with sub-titles and it was set in Nazi Germany. It told the story of a brother and sister who spoke out against the Nazis as college students. I believe their organization had the name of a flower and the movie was focused more on the sisters interrogation.

a. What was the name of the movie? The name of the movie is Sophie Scholl. I was not able to find the name of the movie until days later. When I did get the first results the movies listed did not have a synopsis that gave information related to what the client was looking for, and I was not able to clarify and conduct a thorough interview. I completed this search for some time and tried various strategies. I used the advanced search option and limited the results to only those from the ERC and media. Some of the different ways I tried are as follows: - ANY (foreign films) AND (sub-titles) AND (Nazi Germany) - this resulted in a did you mean option and suggested foreign film and subtitles and Nazi Germany I chose this and it did not result in anything. - I started over and began with a basic search for films on Nazi Germany in the ERC. This gave me 8 titles but I was not able to tell which would be related to the movie being requested. - I then tried to narrow the search by modifying the search and typing films on Nazi Germany AND brother AND sister the results were 0. - Then films on Nazi Germany AND flowers results 0. - Typed films on Nazi Germany AND college students results were 0. Days later I tried again. I did an advanced search, limited to the ERC, I typed Germany AND anti nazi, this resulted in the above title. I read the synopsis and found Sophie was a part of an organization called the White Rose. b. Does the ERC have any other resources about this family and their organization? If yes, please list the titles, call numbers, and formats for all found. Yes, the ERC has does have other resources about this family and their organization. There are many other resources available through the Dunbar Library. Using the INFOhio catalog for Xenias Shawnee Elementary School (http://web2.mveca.org/html/english_unicorn/login/XESW/welcome.html) 5. You are the Media Specialist at Shawnee Elementary in the Xenia School District. A student is looking for resources in the school library on dogs in particular German Shepherds if any are available. a. Using the general catalog, can you find a book to match the students request? If yes, please list the titles, authors, and call numbers. Yes, I was able to find a book to match the students request. There was only 1 title available and it is German shepherds by Schuh, Mari C., 636.737SCH. I was surprised that there was only one title available. I found the title by using the Cats searching feature and typing german shepherds, I chose the Shawnee Elementary School option from the narrowing by location box. When I searched this way I did not get results and it suggested that I try searching using german shepherd dogs. I was then able to find available resources. b. Using the Cat Jr. catalogs A to Zebra interface, can you also find resources? If yes, how? No, I was not able to find resources using the Cats Jr. A to Zebra searching feature. When I clicked on the A to Z picture it gave me more options so I chose the letter d picture and then the dog picture. This resulted in 523 titles referencing to dogs. The Cats Jr. was not able to narrow my search by relevance if the results were more than 200. This made it difficult for me to locate a book about German Shepherds for the student. I did retry the search using the Cats Jr. basic search feature and was

able to find 1 title, the same as in a. I felt this limited the students ability to quickly and easily find the items they needed. The results are too broad and there was no way to limit the searching parameters. Using Greene County Public Librarys online catalog (www.greenelibrary.info) 6. I would like to read the book Mama, please buy me a china doll to my class. a. Does the GCPL library own this book? No, the GCPL does not own a book by this title. If yes, which library has the title? Who is the author? c. Is it also available via the SearchOhio union catalog? If yes, how many libraries own it? No, the title is not available through SearchOhios union catalog. I tried the search through the SearchOhio catalog by completing an author search. I typed Morphew, Launa and did not get any results. I also tried to search by title and limiting the search to the childrens section by typing Mama to see if it would be listed among various other titles. This too was not successful. 7. I read a book about the Appalachian Trail recently and I believe it had the word woods in the title. The author also has an autobiography published recently. a. What is the title of this autobiography? The title of the autobiography is At home: a short history of private life. The title of the book is A walk in the woods: rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trial by Bryson, Bill, 917.4 Bri. I used the advanced search feature and typed Appalachian Trail AND woods. I would like to find titles for my 10 year old to borrow, nothing in the teen or mature ratings. a. Can you tell me how many titles are available for the Wii game system that would be appropriate for my child? There are 161 titles available for the Wii game system that would be appropriate for the patrons child. The searching options gave a list of all the console games available for Wii, but it would not allow the results to be limited by ratings. There are 189 titles of games available, but the results include E, E 10+, teen and mature games. I found this information by choosing the Console Games Collection search feature and typing in Wii games. I also tried to search by typing in Wii games E, Wii games rated everyone, Wii E and Wii games AND NOT teen. Every time this resulted in the same titles. It does show the ratings as part of the summary for each title. I then went through all 189 games to see what ones were appropriate choices for the patron. b. How many are rated E for everyone? There are 120 Wii games rated E for everyone. c. How many are rated E 10+ for older children? There are 41 Wii games rated E 10+ for older Children. d. What other game systems are available? Yes, the DML has season six of the television show Lost. It is located at Belmont, Huber Heights, Kettering Moraine, Miami Township, Northmont and Germantown Public Libraries. I found this information by using the search by format feature. I typed in Lost (television program) and it displayed all of the seasons available. By clicking on the requested season I was able to view the locations that had the title. b. If not, what other seasons are listed in the catalog? The season was available as well as the other five seasons, the final season and the journey back. c. How did DMLs default search differ from those of other libraries? What types of searches did they have that were unique to their library? The DMLs default search differed from other libraries by giving a variety of search options. From the homepage you can just type in what you are looking for or you can choose to use a classic catalog search feature. The homepage search gives you any titles containing the word Lost. This is not specific to the search I wanted to complete but it did result in a good way to complete a quick search. The classic search let me narrow my search by basic, advanced or by format. The by format was unique and was not on any of the other sites. This allowed me to search only for audiobooks or videos and could only be done by title. 10.I need to find an audiobook to take on our vacation. We are leaving tomorrow, so we need the audiobook today. Our car only has a CD player (no cassettes) and we only have time to visit the Belmont location before leaving.

a. Is it possible to display a list in the online catalog for CD audiobooks housed at the Belmont location? If yes, how many are listed in the catalog? Yes, it was possible to display a list of CD audiobooks located only at Belmont Library. There are 903 audiobooks located at this location. I found the information by using the default search feature for audiobooks. This let me then narrow the search even more by CD, downloadable books, cassette or VHS audio. I clicked on books on CD then selected the Belmont location. b. I prefer mysteries; can the list be limited to the mystery genre? If yes, how many are listed? List a title that you recommend and is available for checkout today. Yes, the list can be limited to the mystery genre. There are 147 mystery titles at Belmont Library. Bonus Question do you use an OPAC from a different vendor (Follett, Unicorn, etc)? If so, heres a bonus question: 12.Please note your favorite search feature for this software. How did it compare to the other vendors catalogs that were used in this assignment? I have used the Follett Destiny OPAC while completing placement hours at one of the Centerville District schools. It was easy to use and gave symbols for the various search (limiting) titles. It did provide fewer choices compared to some of the other sites I used while completing this assignment, but I thought it was easy to navigate. INFOhio is still very student friendly and a good choice for district to use but Folletts icons result in narrower results, than say Cats Jr.
