The Jerusalem Cross A religious symbol accepted and used by all Christian denominations today. In our story, it is chosen by the Pope and Constantinople Patriarch as the symbol of the unification.

MAIN SETTING: THE HOLY SEPULCHER CHURCH

The Holy Sepulcher Church (also known as the Church of Resurrection) is the most important site to two billion Christians, because it is where the Passion of Christ occurred. Unlike the Vatican, this church has never before been depicted as a lead location in any dramatic movie or series. Holy Sites at the Holy Sepulcher Church The Golgotha (aka Cavalry) - the site of Jesus crucifixion, where he prayed for his followers and objectors alike before making the ultimate sacrifice - where the battle between sin and salvation takes place. The Sepulcher, where Jesus was buried on Good Friday and from which he resurrected on Easter Sunday - where the forces of light defeat the forces of darkness. In The Jerusalem Paradox, The Holy Sepulcher Church is the main location of all of the major drama. The Popes and the Patriarchs actions, which imitate Jesus own sacrifice for his believers, receive a special historic significance at this holiest of venues.

THEMES: EASTER IN JERUSALEMA TIME OF HOPE, A TIME OF CONFLICT

A Time of Hope Easter in Jerusalem is a time of celebration of Jesus sacrifice for humanity, and his resurrection - a symbol of the spiritual revival of humanity in the post-Christ era. Central Themes during Easter include: Hope, salvation, and redemption. In our story, these themes play out in each of the main characters lives - from protagonists like Orly and the Pope to antagonists like Grigor. Time of renewal and resurrection. In our story, the unification symbolizes both churches attempt to adapt to modernity. In this story, the Pope and Patriarch experience what Christ went through during the Passion, following his path on every day of Easter (both physically and spiritually), in an attempt to bring a message of hope to Jerusalem. A Time of Conflict Easter at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher is also a time of conflict between the five different Christian denominations that reside there, especially between the Catholic and Orthodox Churches.

THE GOLGOTHA

THE SEPULCHER

Conflicts in the Holy Sepulcher Church include: Competing religious practices, customs and traditions. In our story, this theme is reflected in the controversy surrounding the Holy Fire. Physical altercations between Holy Sepulcher Church clergymen. In our story, this theme is reflected in Grigors antagonism towards Catholics. Grigor and other anti-unificationists from both churches reflect the tensions towards the attempts at modernizing the churches through the unification. The Jerusalem Paradox Finally, the paradox emerges from the impossibility of doing any good in Jerusalem without violent resistance: the Pope and the Patriarch, who attempt to end the millennium-old conflict during Easter, face a murder conspiracy.

MAIN CHARACTERS
ORLY AZULAY 35. Jewish Israeli of French-Morrocan decent, a Mossad agent suspended from fieldwork. Orly was formerly one of six women in a unit of 48 named Kiddon, Mossads kidnapping and assassination squad. During a recent operation, she accused a fellow agent of double crossing the force; the agent was found to be innocent. Since then, Orlys judgment has been questioned and she was suspended from field work. For the first time in 14 years, Orly faces the possibility of never returning to the job that consumed her life. She wonders if it is time to start a family, or - against all odds - to redeem herself and restore her reputation. PAULO GUERNASCHELLI 42. French-Italian, Inspector General of the Vaticans Gernadamarie. A devout Catholic whose faith in God and Church has been shaken by the recent investigation of a sex scandal involving the upper echelons of the church. Paulo was born in France to an Italian nun. After her passing, he was raised in a Catholic orphanage. Paulo never knew his father. He has never had a serious romantic relationship. In the aftermath of the scandals, he feels disillusionment with the church, but hopes that going to the holy city of Jerusalem will renew his faith.

SUPPORTING CHARACTERS
THE PATRIARCH OF RUSSIA 65. Russian, Head of the largest Orthodox community in the world, numbering 200 million believers, the richest of all the Orthodox patriarchates. Large in physical stature and in presence, he likes to wear flashy jewelry. The Russian Patriarch is known for his connections to oligarchs. Having worked hard to build up his power (at the expense of the Ecumenical Patriarch), this clergyman plays all sides on the unification issue, waiting for the right deal to surface. POPE PIUS XIII 72. A German Pope who has presided for a decade over a relatively conservative Papacy, rejecting calls for modernization. Months ago, he was struck by the first of a series of dramatic visions. He reached out in private to the Patriarch, suggesting a reunification of the churches. The Popes new mission in life is to expand the reach of the church, in an attempt to save as many souls from perdition as he can. As antagonism mounts, he starts to perceive his journey as the Passion of Christ, accepting its dangers and sacrifices. THE ECUMENICAL PATRIARCH OF CONSTANTINOPLE 73. The Turkish Head of all Orthodox Patriarchates in the world. With his flowing robes, he resembles an ancient prophet. As a moderate, he has openly expressed his support for unification in the past. He presides over a Church with a flat hierarchical structure, unlike that of the Vatican. By this point in his career, the Patriarch is tired of the extensive rivalries and schisms within the church. He fears these forces will ultimately destroy the Church. SHELLEY MELLOT 50. A liberal American nun, a public relations expert. Shelley is a member of the LCWR and one of the 50,000 American nuns that were suspended for speaking up on social issues. She sees it as her sacred duty to bring the Catholic Church closer to the modern world by working against clerical celibacy and church misogyny. Years ago, she assisted the Vatican to rebrand the church in the wake of numerous scandals and dwindling membership. Church higher-ups remembered her work and summoned her to help with the unification. AARON WEINER 45. Israeli, Orlys Mossad boss. He doesnt like his promotion to a desk job any more than Orly likes her temporary banishment to one. Weiner has been a big supporter of hers over the years; but consequently, her failures reflect poorly on him. Weiner closely supervises Orlys actions on this mission, regarding her as a loose cannon.

CARDINAL DUPERRON 70. A French arch-conservative, the Head of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith, formerly known as the Inquisition. A Cardinal-Bishop who leads the French conservatives in the Catholic Church. Formerly the Archbishop of Lyon, Duperron is a gentle and quiet man, but one who knows his power. A long-time friend of the Pope, he is stunned by the Popes break with their conservative agenda - that of a smaller church, just of the truly faithful.

GRIGOR 37. A Russian Orthodox monk, belonging to a radical monastery in Russia excommunicated for protesting against ecumenism. He served in the special forces in Chechnya and participated in inhumane conduct against Chechen Muslims. After his military career, he found salvation in the Orthodox Church. He firmly believes that the Pope is in fact the Anti-Pope and his removal will lead to the Second Coming.

PART TWO (Spy Wednesday, Maundy Thursday)

SYNOPSIS
STORY ARCS Three major story arcs will play themselves out over the course of the miniseries: 1. The unification. The Pope fights off Vatican conservatives, while the Patriarch deals with a divided, non-hierarchical Orthodox Church. Fearful for the fate of his church, Grigor acts in different ways to prevent the unification. 2. The conspiracy to prevent the unification from taking place, led by the power- hungry Russian-Orthodox patriarch and the beacon of conservative Catholicism, Cardinal Duperron. 3. The relationship between the two agents. Orly and Paulo had worked together in the past and have harbored feelings for each other since. They are both in watershed moments in their lives, contemplating whether they should turn their backs on their workaholic tendencies and start a family. Each agent experiences encouragement and disappointment from the other person in different stages of the story.

Orly takes the injured Vatican agent back to his hotel. Sexual tension escalates and the two kiss passionately, but are interrupted by an important phone call: Interpol has identified Grigor as a former Russian soldier. Meanwhile, Duperron turns against the Pope, and enters into a dangerous alliance with the Russian Patriarch, the Greek Patriarch, and Grigor. Disguised Duperron meets Grigor in a dark alley, where he delivers classified information about the Popes itinerary. On Thursday, the Pope delivers a passionate speech to the Council of Patriarchs about the future of the unified Church. The Council conducts a vote on the spot and approves the unification. Paulo confides in Duperron about his attraction to Orly and his dwindling faith; Duperron, acting with an agenda, advices Paulo on how to stay true to the church. We find Grigor leaving Dormition Abbey, spotted by a street camera operated by Jerusalem police. Police notifies Orly, who arrives at the scene first. Orly arrests Grigor and interrogates him until he admits his plan: he has planted a bomb in the Last Supper Room. Paulo arrives at the scene and Orly leaves Grigor alone with him. Seconds later, Paulo shoots Grigor in the head. Orly runs back to find a knife next to Grigors dead body. Paulo reasons Grigor had tried to escape. Orly accuses Paulo of killing an important suspect and becomes suspicious of the Italian. That night, there is heavy security around the Last Supper Room, but no bomb is found. Orly realizes that King Davids Tomb has not been thoroughly cleared. Orly runs over and finds the explosive. With Paulos help, she successfully dismantles the bomb. Leaning towards trusting Paulo, Orly tells him that Duperron was identified as Grigors collaborator. Immediately after Duperron leaves, Paulo disappears with his mentor and relays this information that Orly told him in confidence. Orly goes to Paulos hotel to challenge him about Grigors death. The dispute turns into a heated sex scene. Just after, Orly receives a phone call: Duperron has committed suicide. PART THREE (Good Friday, Great Holy Saturday, Easter Sunday) At the wake for Duperron, the conservative Italian Cardinal evokes the sacrifice that Jesus had made on Good Friday, and Paulo is deeply affected by these words. He avoids Orly when she approaches him to coordinate security for the day. Orly finds out from Shelley that Paulo was with Duperron just before his suicide. As the Pope and Patriarch lead believers down the Via Dolorosa, Orly watches Paulo closely with suspicion. When he suddenly reaches into his jacket, she yells gun and throws herself at the Pope, to everyones shock. Orly is accused of being a paranoid agent, a troubling characteristic from her past. Additionally, the affair is revealed and she is suspended from duty. Orly flies to visit a Lyonnaise orphanage, where Duperron had served as a priest before he came to Italy. She has remained suspicious about the circumstances of his death ever since the wake, and is determined to find the answer in Lyon. There, Orly discovers information that leads her to rush to the airport and board the next flight to Tel Aviv. When she arrives at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, she locates Paulo. Under duress, Paulo confesses his involvement in the conspiracy. As a last resort, the Italian takes aim to shoot at the Pope. The Patriarch pushes the Pope away, takes the bullet and falls, mortally wounded. Paulo tries to escape, but Orly chases him into the underground tunnels. Orly corners Paulo and tells him what she discovered in Lyon: that Duperron was his father. With nothing to lose, Paulo admits to everything: he killed Grigor in order to prevent him from revealing Duperrons involvement in the anti-unification conspiracy. Paulo apologizes, telling Orly hed wanted to leave Vatican service and start a new life with her, but he had a debt to his father - and this was the price. Shin Bet agents arrive on the scene and kill Paulo. The Pope and Armenian Patriarch complete the Holy Fire, thus affirming the Vaticans acceptance of the ritual. Despite the ritual, is clear that the churches are nowhere near unified. Orly leaves her job in the hopes of starting fresh. Six months later, we see Orly putting flowers on Paulos grave. She is six months pregnant.

PART ONE (Palm Sunday, Holy Monday, Holy Tuesday) Easter Week 2025: Palm Sunday. Holy delegations from the Vatican and Constantinople arrive in Israel unannounced and head straight to the Holy Sepulcher Church. Global media in Israel goes wild. A group of Orthodox monks arrives at the airport at the same time - one of whom is Grigor, who finds a way to sneak into the Holy Sepulcher. Orly Azulai, a suspended Mossad agent, arrives at the Church to greet her old friend Paulo Guernaschelli, Inspector General of the Vaticans Corps. The Pope and Patriarch shock the crowds: they announce the end of the Great Schism, and that the two ancient churches will unite. The crowd is taken by surprise, and many are angry over the announcement. Grigor becomes violent and manages to overpower several Shin Bet personnel. Orly steps in and arrests Grigor - but he later escapes. Orly returns to the office, where she is assigned to the security team for the Pope - a chance to redeem her past. She realizes she will be working closely with her old friend, Paulo. Paulo is flirtatious, but despite her attraction to the agent, Orly keeps him at arms length. The Popes team hires Sister Shelley, a progressive American nun with an accomplished record in PR, to help manage the unification. She tells the Pope that the first event that he and the Patriarch should attend together will be at the Al Aqsa mosque the next day. Later, the Pope confides to Cardinal Duperron - a staunch conservative and a close friend - the real reason for his decision to proceed with the unification: he has experienced a series of visions from Christ. Meanwhile, at the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, Orthodox patriarchs raise concerns over the unification. The Russian Patriarch plots with Grigor, hoping to scare the clergymen into postponing the unification. The next day at the Al Aqsa mosque, a sniper (Grigor) shoots two of the Popes bodyguards with rubber bullets - as a warning. Paulo chases the sniper on the citys roof tops, but Grigor overwhelms Paulo with physical strength, knocking him off the roof. Orly, who was running behind them, saves Paulo.

Traditional Media A 3-part TV miniseries in which the first part airs on Palm Sunday, the second part airs on Spy Wednesday, and the third part airs on Easter Sunday. It meets the four criteria (see comparable) that made shows like Hatfields & McCoys a successful miniseries: Appeals to older audiences (30 plus) Use of strong brands (Jerusalem, the Vatican and the Orthodox Church) Event-television (Easter Week in Jerusalem). Historical feuds fascinate people (Orthodox vs Catholic religion) The first 3 episodes will serve as a pilot season for a long-term multiplatform story about the fascinating worlds of clergymen and security forces in contemporary Jerusalem. Transmedia Campaign The campaign will span between different web platforms and will organically use different web platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Blogs, YouTube and a fansite) as well as apps adapted to mobiles, tablets and computers. European Co-Production The Jerusalem Paradox is a co-production between some of the most important Catholic and Orthodox communities in the western world. Accordingly, its main characters and locations represent these countries and their cultures: Cardinal Duperron, Paulo, the city of Lyon and its monastery The Pope Russian Patriarch, Grigor Sister Shelley Orly, Aaron Weiner, the city of Jerusalem and its holy sites Filming Locations It is expected that in 2013, Israel will start offering attractive tax benefits to foreign productions filming in its territory. HOLY SEPULCHER CHURCH

Meet ORLY AZULAI. When we find her its just another day at the office. Orly is frustrated with her work. She looks at agents getting debriefed for a mission with envy-they are a reminder of her own suspension from fieldwork. As she stares out the window she breaks into a cold sweat: she sees a dead body of a man in his thirties, dressed in a suit. A phone call snaps her back to reality. Orly is smiling at the sound of the other person's voice. It is her colleague and old friend, PAULO GUERNASCHELLI, the new Inspector General of the Vatican's Corps of Gendarmerie checking to make sure she is coming to see him later that day. Orly arrives at the Holy Seplucher Church, but Paulo is too busy to notice her at first. Orly stares at Paulo for a few moments, letting her eyes betray that she harbors feelings for him. When Paulo notices her, she walks up and shakes his hand, keeping the interaction professional--for now. The place is filled with news reporters speculating what the big event is about. One expert suggests the Catholic and Orthodox clergy will lead a joint celebration of Easter, for the first time in over a millennium. It is a big step in the effort to unite the old churches -- which is still a faraway dream. Grigor and his fellow monks arrive as the ceremonies begin. The Patriarch of Constantinople opens by saying that people have thought that Great Schism is an irrevocable fact. But two centuries ago, our savior Jesus Christ raised Lazarus from the Dead--another feat thought to be irrevocable, but executed on the power of faith." Families around the world are watching this broadcast live - on TV and on websites like pope2you.net and vatican.com. The Pope--older but extremely charismatic--says that he and the Patriarch have been talking for a long time and have decided it is time to unite the two ancient churches. The Pope invites the attendants and the world to join the Patriarch and himself "as we retrace the footsteps of Jesus, spiritually and physically, during Easter week in Holy Jerusalem. The Jerusalem Cross will be the new symbol of our unification--our resurrection." The crowd erupts. Some cheering, some jeering. The reporters are dumbfounded and thrilled this is the biggest event in their careers. Some clergymen are visibly upset, among them the Russian Patriarch and Cardinal Duperron. Grigor cannot contain his frustration he riles up crowd members to besiege the Pope and Patriarch. As security starts to fail, Orly steps in. She asks Paulo about his escape protocol but he freezes up. Grigor manages to overpower several Shin Bet personnel. The Pope and Patriarch are ushered to the Notre Dame Hotel outside the Old City. Orly disables Grigor and arrests him - a difficult task, but Orly is crafty. On the way to jail, Grigor overwhelms his guards and escapes.

During the scuffle, Orly got roughed up. She returns to Mossad headquarters, where she is examined by a doctor. This doctor is a woman 10 years older than Orly and knows her well. The doctor concludes that Orly is fine and in good shape, for her age. Orly asks what she means by that, to which the doctor replies that Orly should realize shes getting too old for fieldwork. Its time to start thinking about a family. Orly maintains a frozen expression, but is affected by the doctors words. The physical examination is interrupted by a call from Weiner, who tells Orly to come to his top-floor office immediately. Weiner informs Orly that her outstanding performance at the Church got her assigned with coordinating the Popes protection on behalf of the Israeli forces. Protection inside Israel? I dont do that. Im Mossad special ops. Weiner replies that they were all surprised about the news and that Shin Bet (Israeli FBI) are against it. But the order came directly from the Prime Ministers office. One catch, Weiner continues, because of your suspension, Shin Bet is insisting on a psychological assessment. Orly is apprehensive about the meaning of this test, but Weiner reminds her she should be thankful for this assignment - it could be a step towards redeeming her past failures and rebooting her career. Orly arrives at Shin Bet headquarters and walks into the video surveillance room: 8 rows of flat screen TVs line the walls; 6 agents are constantly on duty watching them. Orly orders drone surveillance of all monasteries in the area, to locate Grigor. Shin Bet officers object: the cost is too high. It is a power struggle, but Orly says the last word. That night, Orly and Paulo drive around parts of Jerusalem where the Pope and Patriarch will visit during Holy Week. As they arrive at the Holy Sepulcher Church, Paulo asks about a suspicious-looking ladder under one of the windows. Maybe now theyll get rid of the ugly thing, Orly responds, a month ago the whole church exploded because someone had moved the ladder. But thats Jerusalem, every little event is explosive. Tradition has it, the ladder can only be moved when the Catholic and Orthodox churches unify. During the night, Paulo is warm and flirtatious, bringing up personal - rather than professional - moments they shared when Orly was working in Italy on a job. Despite her attraction to Paulo, Orly maintains a professional veneer. When Orly dares to say something about the next time they will meet after he leaves Jerusalem, Paulo responds that it might be in the far future, as they are both married to their jobs. Orly interprets the innocent remark as rejection, and calls it a night. Paulo realizes he said something wrong, but its too late to do anything about it.

HOLY MONDAY Jesus Preaches to The Flock.

Hilary Grant, a journalist, talks about the history of the schism, dating all the way back to the Roman and Byzantine empires. She refers us to her online blog, which exists in realist for the shows viewers to watch. We learn that the schism had no single dividing point and many efforts have been made to repair it. However, in the last millennium, the churches have drifted apart. We also learn that this is a particularly unusual move for this Pope, a conservative (a la Pope Benedict XVI) elected by his colleagues to be 'God's Rottweiler' and undo the excesses of Vatican Council II. Until recently, Pius XII's papacy had been devoted to strengthening ties with ardent believers and criticizing worshipers of a diluted Catholicism. The newscaster says that if the Pope has so thoroughly reversed course and agreed to such a union, he must be relying on a strong consensus within the Vatican. And now we learn, as is often the case, that the newscaster is dead wrong. We pull back to reveal that the program is being screened for the Pope and his Cardinals in the Church of All Nations. At the College of Cardinals, many are angry. The Pope talks about the church's crises: low enrollments, depleting resources, and worst of all, a severe shortage of priests. A conservative Italian Cardinal speaks against the unification, mentioning the changes of dogma they will have to concede for the much-smaller Orthodox Church. During this entire interaction, the Pope's authority over other cardinals is absolute and unwavering. The Italian cardinal quotes angry remarks from blogs and online communities to prove that believers are not ready for this step. How could the Catholic Church give up priests' celibacy? The Pope replies, "Celibacy is finished! The pledge of celibacy is a cruel and corrosive thing. It runs counter to human nature." The Italian Cardinal is shocked. How can earthly relationships come between priests and God? But the Pope has made his mind. The Italian Cardinal then rails against that "obvious act of charlatanry", the Holy Firewhereby Jesus "lights" the Patriarch's candle on Holy Saturday. "Surely it cant become part of our church." The Pope responds he has no intention of accepting the Holy Fire. The Pope ends the discussion with an Easter story about the barren fig tree that Jesus cursed on his way to Jerusalem. The meaning is clear: those who lack faith in the Pope are doomed; they will wither and die like the empty fig tree. Interestingly, throughout this exchange, arch-conservative Cardinal Duperron does not utter a word.

A colleague of the Italian Cardinal walks up to him and tries to reassure him that with more than 20 voting Italian cardinals in the College, his ideology will retain its power. But the Italian Cardinal is not comforted. After the Pope leaves, the Italian Cardinal scolds Duperron for his silence, saying that if he remains passive, he is just as responsible for the church's devastation as the Pope. Duperron hardly responds. The Italian Cardinal walks away, furious. The Pope's supporters summon SISTER SHELLEY MELLOT, a progressive American nun and an accomplished PR person, to assist in getting public support for the controversial unification. Shelley thinks how to spin this news. Vatican 3.0? Rebooting Faith? She will come up with a slogan later. But now she vents her frustration. "So priests can marry, but nuns can't. Another deal where women are thrown under the bus!" No one responds. Shelley tweets about her new job, thus introducing viewers to her feed. In their first meeting, Sister Shelley tells the Pope that Jerusalem's Islamic Waqf has asked that the Pope and Patriarch speak at the Al Aqsa mosque. Paulo, who's in charge of security, is also present; he objects to the idea: the mosque is not part of the original tour, and including it now would make security impossible to coordinate. But Shelley insists it is an important gesture: she reminds the Pope of an unfortunate speech he had given a few years ago, in which he labeled Islam as a violent religion. Shelley shows that embarrassing speech to the Pope on YouTube-which the show's viewers can watch as well. The Pope realizes he has to make amends, if not for the Catholic Church, then for the new church. Paulo continues to disagree, but the Pope is convinced by Shelley's argument. At Mossad headquarters, Orly and Paulo discuss the decision to have the following day's sermons at Al Aqsa mosque. Orly is outraged - the mosque can't be secured in such a short notice. Theres a threat from Muslim factions. On the web, websites of fundamentalist Muslims post threats against the Pope. Paulo asks Orly to talk to Sister Shelley, that 'crazy nun from America'. The conversation between the agents transcends professionalism. Weiner walks in and picks up on the couple's warm interaction. Orly takes note of Weiner's reproaching look. At a caf near the Sepulcher Church, Shelley and Orly meet. Orly communicates her security concerns, but Shelley refuses to back down. At first, Shelley treats Orly like another hard-headed security person and the meeting is off to a bad start. But Shelley sees that Orly is more open to hear about the importance of the event than Paulo was. Strong-willed and articulate, Shelley buys Orly's trust. Orly comes to accept having the event at Al Aqsa, despite her reservations.

CHURCH OF ALL NATIONS

AL AQSA MOSQUE

At night, the Pope meets with Duperron. We learn how close the two men are and we feel Duperrons sense of betrayal that the Pope has made such a move without consulting him. Duperron asks the Pope, "What happened to you? Was it not you who said that the mission of God's servants is "to hand on faithfully what God told to Jesus, what Jesus told his apostles, and what his apostles hand on to us-tradition, with a capital T?"

Orly and Paulo get a debriefing about the kinds of violent threats that are circulating on Facebook, Twitter and blogs. People in Jerusalem and around the world are getting arrested for making threats to kill the Pope and Patriarch. During the debriefing, Orly brushes Paulos elbow accidentally. He takes it as a sign. Cardinal Duperron meets with other cardinals behind the Popes back, and tells them that the Pope is having strange visions. Duperron suggests the Pope might be suffering from the Jerusalem Syndrome, and convinces other cardinals that the Pope must be examined by a psychiatrist. In a stunning historical Orthodox monastery, Grigor gives an apocalyptic speech to his fellow monks: Ecumenism is a threat to the world. The books of Revelation and Daniel say that a false prophet will get people to worship in a different way. He will call himself a Pope. But in reality, he is the Anti-Pope, the Devil himself! We must not surrender to this man! Listening intently to the speech at the back of the hall is The Russian Patriarch, whose presence surprises Grigor. The Russian Patriarch had noticed Grigors reaction to the announcement at the Holy Sepulcher Church, and admired the monks passion. The Patriarch has gone to great lengths to find Grigor, and now he wishes to discuss how they could prevent the disaster of the unification. Orly and Paulo accompany the Pope and Patriarch on their visit to Al Aqsa mosque, where they conduct an ecumenical ritual with Muslim leaders. The visit stirs controversy as the Mosque area is claimed by three religions: Muslims, Jews, and Christians. There the Pope preaches, In a world sadly torn by divisions, this sacred place challenges men and women of goodwill to work to overcome misunderstandings. Orly, who is working alongside Paulo, senses that something is out of place and scans the buildings around her. She catches sight of a sniper dressed as a Muslim faithful. But Orly is late: the sniper is already taking aim and is shooting two bullets, which later turn out to be rubber bullets. Two of the Popes bodyguards are hit. Paulo runs faster than any of the other agents and chases the sniper on the Old Citys roof tops. Paulo gets close to the sniper, but the sniper manages to outsmart and disarm him. The sniper overwhelms Paulo with physical strength, knocking him off the roof. Paulo is holding on to an old sewage pipe that can barely carry his weight. The sniper tells Paulo, if your Pope doesnt stop, next time I will use real bullets. Orly runs over and catches a glimpse of the sniper before he escapes; she recognizes him as Grigor, the monk who had escaped Shin Bet at the Holy Sepulcher Church. Orly has to decide: should she save her career by running after Grigor, or save Paulo from certain death?

The Pope then stuns Duperron with the revelation that he has changed because of a series of visions, in which Christ has appeared. We see a flicker of the Pope's visions as he describes them: A pillar of fire speaks to him. It tells of the suffering of seeing God's two sons, Peter and Constantine, fight. The voice tells the Pope it is up to him to rejoin the sons. After this particular vision, the Pope tells Duperron, he reached out to the Patriarch about ending the Great Schism. Duperron shows the Pope a revering face, but he is deeply troubled by the Pope's story.

HOLY TUESDAY

Jesus is condemned: a heretic by the Pharisees, a rebel by the Romans. His authority is questioned.
At the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, the Orthodox patriarchs are quarreling over the unification. This meeting is very different than that of the Cardinals: the patriarchs are independent and outspoken, in a discussion amongst equals. For some of them, resenting the unification is a result of uncertainty about their place in the reunited church: will they be forced to become cardinals? Will they be able to become pope, or will they have an inferior status to the Catholics? Some worry most about the Holy Fire ritual: how can they forego the ritual, which the Catholics consider blasphemous? Among these clergymen, The Greek Patriarch is the most outspoken opponent to the unification. Last Easter, he excommunicated anyone who spoke to Jews, Muslims and especially Catholics about ecumenism. Smiling silently at the council is the Russian Patriarch, the Greek Patriarch's ally and leader of the world's biggest Orthodox community. This man sees himself as the true leader of the Orthodox Church, even though he is currently beset with the possible schism of his own--that of the Ukrainian church. The Greek Patriarch tries to bring about an immediate vote on the unification. But the Constantinople Patriarch buys time and insists that the vote will not happen before Thursday.

THE IMMOVABLE LADDER

PART TWO
SPY WEDNESDAY Jesus is betrayed. Orly is at the hospital, dosing off on a chair next to Paulo's hospital bed. At a chapel in St. Savas Monastery, Grigor has a vision of the Pope as the antichrist - a Jesus imposture who will bring about the End of Days. His vision corresponds with ancient prophecies that propose that one of the popes in the 21st century will be the antichrist. Grigor prays with fervor that he will succeed in stopping the unification, which would corrupt his church first, and then the world. Meanwhile, Duperron has sent for a Catholic psychiatrist to be flown in from Italy to assess the Pope's mental state. Sister Shelley tries to resist it; she tweets about how impossible it is to work with people who cannot accept new ideas. When Duperron tells the Pope about it, the Pope shows no signs of anger; he accepts the psychiatrist as another test he would have to pass in order to bring hope to his disciples. Duperron asks the Pope if he shouldn't resign, since his visions are probably a sign of great stress. The Pope replies that resignation is out of the question: "Christ never climbed down from the cross, now will I." The Pope then extends his hand and reminds Duperron his oath of "unconditional reverence and obedience". Duperron kisses the Pope's hand and sulks away. At the session, the psychiatrist asks if the Pope is familiar with the Jerusalem Syndrome, a mental disorder in which pilgrims who arrive in Jerusalem believe they are the Messiah. What's so strange about a Pope having visions? The Pope asks, naming different pontificates in the past who had visions. When the psychiatrist leaves the Pope, Duperron blasts him with questions about the Pope's sanity. The psychiatrist senses Duperron has some secret agenda. He pauses, then responds: "Bottom line, being the Pope is a job. Let me know when he is not doing it." The Pope's infallibility remains unchallenged. Duperron is at a loss - his plan has failed, and now the Pope knows that Duperron is working against him. Desperate, Duperron turns to the only other opposer of the unification powerful enough to stop it - the Russian Patriarch. The Patriarch tells Duperron there is definitely something they can do and that he knows how they can go about it.

HOLY LAVRA OF ST. SAVAS

22

23

Orly and Paulo travel to the Holy Lavra of St. Savas-a monastery built into a cliff in the Kidron Valley, where the Dead are prophesied to rise. The pair inquires if there is anyone staying at St. Savas who looks like Grigor. The monks all deny having seen such a man. But Orly doesnt give up. She insists on searching the underground tomb of Saint John. There, Orly and Paulo find Grigor. Paulo is closer to Grigor, but the monk overpowers him. Paulo tries to chase Grigor on the cliff over the Kidron Valley, but his bruised leg does not allow him to go very far. Grigor escapes. Orly and Paulo are called to for a meeting about the Al Aqsa and St. Savas incidents. Before they go into the meeting, Orly tells Paulo she will probably never be allowed back to fieldwork, so he should let her take the responsibility for their conduct with Grigor. Paulo tries to resist, but Orly insists. Weiner is present at the meeting, which is run by Shin Bet. Orly can tell that Weiner suspects a connection beyond work between Paulo and herself. Orly takes the blame for Grigors escapes. The Shin Bet officers scold Orly for not attending the psychological assessment they required her to undergo. Orly is defensive - she doesnt need an assessment. Shin Bet officers demand that Orly be replaced, but Paulo intervenes: he refuses to work with anyone but Orly. For now, the Israeli officers appear to have no choice but to accept Paulos wishes on the matter. Paulo approaches Duperron in his chambers. Duperron invites Paulo to do a proper confession, as per the Spy Wednesday tradition, and offers Paulo communion. Paulo confesses he has had a crisis of faith since being appointed Inspector General: the scandals he has investigated within the Vatican have greatly undermined his ability to do his work with a full heart. Paulo is thinking about leaving the job and dedicating his life to God in some other way. Like starting a family. Duperron tells Paulo that he cannot abandon the church now-it needs him. Duperron sounds anxious and desperate; Paulo asks him if he is referring to anything in particular. Duperron replies that God will show him the way, as he always does.

The Constantinople Patriarch meets with the Pope. There is a sense of camaraderie between the two men. The Patriarch reveals to the Pope that the council of Patriarchs has scheduled to vote on the unification the following day. "And", he says, "it will take a miracle for me to get approval from them". The Patriarch asks the Pope about accepting the Holy Fire, implying it would help. But the Pope says it is not yet the right time. To lift the Patriarch's spirits, The Pope reminds the Patriarch that during Holy Week, in Jerusalem, miracles can happen. At a hidden spot in Jerusalem, a man disguised as a Franciscan friar gives Grigor a map of the Mt. Zion holy complex - site of the Last Supper Room and Kind David's tomb. We then see this same scene from a camera hovering over the monastery: it is one of the Shin Bet's drones, recording this exchange. Glimpses of dialogue are heard about the need to plant a fake bomb that would scare attendants and cancel the event. Back at the Shin Bet's control room, the agent who is supposed to be watching the screen is distracted. The show's Facebook page offers viewers the chance to go online and look through the drone footage in order to figure out the true identity of the alleged Franciscan friar. Outside the Holy Sepulcher Church, Sister Shelley approaches Orly, who is just about to leave for the night. Shelley tells Orly she has felt guilty about the sniper incident - she should have listened to security experts and let go of the Al Aqsa idea. Orly comforts her but she has other things on her mind. "Between us," Orly says,"what's the story with Paulo?" Shelly laughs, "oh, the Paulo question. Not a good prospect. Already married! To his job and God! Orly frowns. HOLY THURSDAY Jesus eats the last supper, and washes the feet of his disciples. The Russian Patriarch talks to the Greek Patriarch in secret: the vote cannot go through and they have to use it in order to get the Council of Patriarchs to realize that a change of leadership is required in the Orthodox Church. At the Council of Patriarchs, the Greek Patriarch openly challenges the Constantinople Patriarch's authority: it is based on mere tradition - Constantinople is a small patriarchate with no real power base.

24

25

But just then, the Pope shows up at the council, shocking its members. The Pope talks about the unifications importance, promising patriarchs an equal chance at becoming Pope to that of the Catholic Cardinals. The Greek Patriarch retaliates: with 250 million believers worldwide, we will be 20% of the new church but we will receive only 10% of the representation. The Pope allays their fears by promising a power-sharing formula fair to the Orthodox church. The Russian Patriarch asks about the Holy Fire; the Pope respectfully replies that everything will be solved with time. The Pope then assumes an apocalyptic tone: these are hard times for both churches; they need each other. The patriarchs must understand, he says, that the flat hierarchy of their church will be their undoing--they will keep breaking off into more churches, just as you and I broke apart 1000 years ago, and just as the Ukrainian church is seceding from the Russian church-- today, as we speak. This argument resonates with many patriarchs. At the vote, an overwhelming majority of patriarchs immediately approve the unification. The Russian Patriarch leaves the Greek Patriarch as the sole anti-unificationist and votes with the winners. The question remains: where does the Russian Patriach really stand? The councils decision is trending on virtual Facebook pages and Twitter accounts related to the church. Grigor meets with the Russian Patriarch in the Old City of Jerusalem and tells him that the Pope must be stopped. Grigor says that it is up to him to kill the Pope. The Russian Patriach tries to talk Grigor out of it, but to no avail; the monk is determined that offing the Pope is the only way for Jesus to prevail. The Russian Patriarch goes back to the Holy Sepulcher Church and tells Duperron that Grigor is out of control: not only is he going to assassinate the Pope, but when they arrest him, they will find who his collaborators were. Concerned-looking Duperron asks Paulo, who is at the Holy Sepulcher preparing security arrangements, to accompany him so they could talk in private. Moments later, Orly finds Paulo as he finishes the meeting with Duperron; the bond between the two men is obvious and Paulo is looking upset. Orly asks Paulo to join her in an investigation, but Paulo tells her she should go alone.

We see Grigor walking out of Mt. Zion's Dormition Abbey through a street camera, which is made available online at the same time the show airs - viewers can watch Grigor walking out in real time. At Shin Bet's control room, we see how difficult it is for a surveillance team to deal with the amount of information made available through drones and street cameras; but this time, someone notices Grigor and relays his location to Orly. Orly, who is driving through the Old City, quickly turns the direction of her car. Black cars and Shin Bet SUVs race through Jerusalem towards the Old City. Orly tracks Grigor down. After chasing the monk through the cobble-stone alleyways, she finally catches up to him. Orly overwhelms this worthy opponent and removes all his weapons before cuffing him. Orly gets Grigor to admit he had just left Dormition Abbey. Grigor tells her she cannot stop him: it's already too late. Paulo arrives on the scene. Orly leaves Grigor with Paulo and hurries over to Dormition Abbey. Seconds later, Orly hears a gunshot. Orly runs back to find Grigor with a knife in his hand and a bullet in his head. Paulo says he had to shoot because Grigor tried to escape. Orly scolds Paulo for killing an important deponent. Orly goes to Weiner, bringing up her doubts about Paulo - his killing Grigor just doesn't make sense. Weiner tells Orly to stay away from this line of thinking, especially because of the disaster her mistrust of a fellow agent had caused in the past. When Orly tries to resist, Weiner insists: a dead Grigor is definitely a good result for her team; she should curb her paranoid tendencies. Orly is called to Shin Bet's control room, where she is shown the drone video that had escaped Shin Bet's attention, which shows Grigor meeting with a Franciscan Friar. Orly inspects the footage closely and reveals that the friar is actually Cardinal Duperron. Orly withholds this information from Paulo. From there, we move to the Last Supper Room, for the ecumenical dinner, constructed as a Passover Seder. The Last Supper room is packed to the rafters with clergymen of different faiths and, of course, security. So far, Orly and her team have not found any trace of a bomb. But Orly keeps investigating, making her men triple-check themselves. Some members of Orly's team become frustrated by her obsession with Grigor's indecipherable threat.
DORMITION ABBEY

KING DAVIDS TOMB

26

27

LAST SUPPER ROOM

As part of the ceremony, the Pope washes the feet of the cardinals and patriarchs. Theres an intense exchange of looks when he washes the feet of Duperron: Is he the Popes Judas? The Pope starts to speak before the ecumenical dinner. When Jesus came to Jerusalem, he knew he would be offering himself as a lamb in the new Passover. The Pope continues: At the end of his earthly life, in the face of treachery from one of his closest, Jesus said, As the Father loves me, so I also love you. And I say to you today that only love and faith can defeat hate, greed, and treachery. The crowd gives the Pope a standing ovation. While the Pope speaks, Orly asks her team if they have cleared the adjacent Tomb of King David. They look at each other, baffled. Orly runs to the tomb and there she discovers a bomb. We realize that Grigor must have planted the bomb before he was killed. One of the agents asks Orly if they should evacuate immediately. Do you know what happens when you yell fire at a crammed space?, she roars, People crush each other! Orly agonizes but with Paulos help, she disarms the bomb. Now, she is leaning towards trusting him again. In confidence, Orly tells Paulo that drone cameras have identified Duperron as Grigors collaborator. Immediately after Duperron leaves, accompanied by The Russian Patriarch, Paulo disappears as well. Later, Orly goes to Paulos hotel room. She tells him about talking to Weiner after he had killed Grigor. To her surprise, She finds Paulo receptive and understanding of her suspicions. Instead of telling her she is wrong, Paulo tells Orly that this time is one of a great test for everyone, and he hopes that both she and himself will emerge stronger from it. Orly tries to get something more concrete from Paulo. In response, he tells her that he has been confiding in secret with Duperron because of his doubts about his job and his feelings about her; feelings that are so strong that they make him feel like he could start a new life, a family life. This turns into a moment of passion: Orly and Paulo have sex. That same night, the Pope is having a dream about being nailed to a cross. As he wakes up, he looks at his hands. The Pope holds up his hands as if they were pierced by nails and blood is about to burst out of them. The Pope is interrupted by a knock at the door. At the same time, Orly and Paulo are woken up by a phone call. They all receive the same news: Duperron has committed suicide.

PART THREE
GOOD FRIDAY Jesus is crucified. Orly stands in Duperrons temporary chambers, examining the circumstances of his death. The apparent cause of death is suicide: Duperrons wrists are slashed, leaving blood everywhere. He left a note in Latin that reads, Me ignosce, meus filius. The translation: Forgive me, my son. A decision is made (by Church higher-ups and, particularly, Sister Shelley) to downplay the fact of Duperrons suicide. The Pope is extremely saddened to hear about Duperrons death. He summons Paulo to his chambers. Paulo is respectful, but uncomforted by the Popes gesture. At the Holy Sepulcher Church, the Patriarch and the Pope meet once more. The Patriarch insists that with all the resistance they are seeing, the only way that the unification will go through is if the Pope accepts the Holy Fire. The Pope hesitates. His dream of being martyred convinced him that the ritual is not to be incorporated. He tells the Patriarch that as a sign of good faith, he personally will be the Catholic representative at the Holy Fire. Back at the press conference, Shelley announces the Popes decision to attend the Holy Fire and mentions Cardinal Duperrons passing, almost as a footnote. No comment is made of the cause of death. A cover-up controversy ensues on Shelleys Twitter, accusing her of covering up Duperrons suicide. Orly tries to speak with cardinals about Duperron, but they are not cooperative. She finally finds Sister Shelley, who is performing the hard task of notifying Duperrons close ones about his passing. Shelley is on the phone with a nun from a French monastery where Duperron had worked years ago. The nun on the other end weeps - the children of her orphanage will be sad to hear that their patron saint has passed. Shelley promises the French nun to send her warm wishes to Paulo, who must be suffering more than anyone for this great mans loss. Orly hears this. Orly waits for the phone call to conclude, and then asks the Sister if she has any information about Duperron that could help. By now, Shelley feels comfortable around Orly and is noticeably stressed. She confesses to Orly her concern that the unification might not go through because all these old men do is take turns at undoing it. Orly tells Shelley that some people involved in the investigation on the Vaticans side had acted suspiciously even before Duperrons suicide alluding to Paulo, but without using his name. Shelley tells Orly she has suspicions of her own: just before Duperrons suicide, she saw him with Paulo. Orly is flabbergasted: Paulo never said a word about it.

Orly tries to talk to Paulo, but he avoids her. Paulo spends the day by Duperron's open casket, depressed. At the wake for Duperron, the conservative Italian Cardinal evokes the sacrifice that Jesus had made on Good Friday, the sacrifice that Duperron just made, and the sacrifice that everyone must make to lift themselves up from earthly temptations." Paulo is affected by these words. Orly takes her concerns about Paulo to Weiner again. Even though Paulo's disappearance around the time of Duperron's suicide sounds suspicious, Weiner is unwilling to challenge Paulo's authority. Its politics - he doesnt want to jeopardize relations with the Vatican, but he is also trying to protect Orly's job and her reputation. Later that day, the Pope and Patriarch walk along the Via Dolorosa, recreating Christ's path. Thousands of believers follow them in a beautifully orchestrated religious ritual whose memory will last for centuries. But Orly only cares about one thing: she is watching Paulo's behavior closely. When Paulo walks up the Pope and reaches into his jacket, Orly yells out "gun" and throws herself at the Pope, to the shock of everyone. The scene turns into a mayhem: horrified pilgrims are running all over each other. Several people are severely wounded. And all because an Israeli agent decided the Pope's head bodyguard was going to kill him. At a secret governmental facility, a representative of the Prime Minister's office grills Shin Bet and Mossad officers for giving someone with Orly's past the responsibility over securing the Pope; this, despite the fact that the Prime Minister's office had asked for her assignment in the first place. Orly quickly learns that she could actually do worse professionally than when she had started: she is interrogated by aggressive Shin Bet officers, who wanted her head ever since she superseded them. The interrogation brings up severe accusations against Orly: she has a history of false accusations that got an innocent secret service agent killed. And now she targets them towards a man she has an affair with. When the affair comes up, Weiner looks away from Orly - it is obvious he has brought up his suspicions to Shin Bet. At the conclusion of the meeting, Orly is suspended from all governmental service. The press is having a field day. Hilary Grant's blog carries a short portrait of Orly - the mysterious Mossad agent who ruined Good Friday services. Defeated, Orly returns home. Alone, she starts crying: she has no lover, no family and now, no job.

JERUSALEM TUNNELS

HOLY SATURDAY Jesus returns in spirit.

Orly is lying in bed. It is doubtful she has gotten any sleep. Orly is replaying in her mind the exchange Shelley had over the phone: Duperron had worked with orphanage nuns. The nuns knew Paulo personally. While its still dark outside, Orly hurries to the airport and catches a flight to Lyon, France. The Pope makes plans to be present when the patriarchs of Constantinople, Armenia, Jerusalem, and Russia visit the Church of the Holy Sepulcher to perform the Holy Fire ritual. The Pope reassures a few cardinals that his presence will not be interpreted as acceptance of the ritual. He will merely attend as an observer, the way Catholic clergymen have been attending the ritual since the 19th century. The Greek Patriarch tweets that there is no way the unification could ever go through, especially not when the Pope still refuses to accept the Holy Fire. Orly arrives in Lyon. She visits the church where Duperron had served for years as a priest before being elevated to Bishop. Right next to the church is an orphanage. Orly visits the orphanage. She sees children playing there, and stops to look at them; should she not just drop everything and start a family? But Orly is too much of a professional. She tells one of the nuns that she is looking to adopt a baby. Orly is left alone in a room with the orphanages records. Something she sees in one of the files stuns her. Orly races back to Jerusalem. But its difficult to get anywhere near the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. The streets are flooded with tourists, pilgrims, and local worshippers - all of whom are being held in check by local police. Orly finds a crowded barricade and convinces a female officer to bring reinforcement while leaving only one policewoman present. Orly then ties down the policewoman and takes her badge and uniform. Moments later, we find Orly - now dressed as a local police officer, and with credentials to match - entering the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. The Holy Fire ritual is to be held inside, but the rites havent started yet, and Orly searches furiously for Paulo. She finally finds him upstairs in the Calvary, the actual site of Christs crucifixion. Orly comes up behind Paulo, sticks a gun to him and tells him to be quiet. Orly tells Paulo that shes going to turn him in: she knows Paulo was with Duperron last night. She also has just returned from his orphanage in Lyon and she knows the truth about him. Paulo is about to respond - but just then, Weiner sees Orly from afar. He immediately has her stopped, and - despite her protests - frees Paulo. We cut to the Holy Fire ceremony, in which the Patriarch carries the candle into the Church. This is the candle with which the Patriarch takes the fire from Jesus' grave, and subsequently brings the fire to the masses that are waiting outside. The Pope is present, but takes no part in the ritual. Orly is dragged away, but keeps looking at Paulo; he is staring at the candle the Patriarch is holding. Just as the Pope and Patriarch are about to enter the Golgotha, Orly yells, "The candle will explode if you light it!" The Patriarch hears her in time and turns around before getting a chance to light the candle. But then we see what the Patriarch sees: Paulo is taking aim - at the Pope! Paulo shoots. The Patriarch pushes the Pope away, and takes the bullet in the chest. The Patriarch falls, mortally wounded. The candle rolls away from him. Paulo runs into the tunnels. The masses are shocked. Everyone is certain the unification has come to an end. Orly chases Paulo in the tunnels. Paulo's leg gives in; he falls. Orly corners Paulo and tells him what she discovered in Lyon: that Duperron was the man who took him to the orphanage after his mother passed away; Duperron was his biological father. Paulo affirms this is true and admits to everything: he killed Grigor in order to prevent the monk from revealing his connection to Duperron. But after Orly identified Duperron as Grigor's collaborator, there was no escape for his father. And so, Duperron committed suicide when he realized his part in the anti-unification conspiracy was going to be revealed. Paulo apologizes, telling Orly he had really wanted to leave agent life and start a family. Orly asks him, almost in tears, what made him turn from that to trying to kill the Pope. Paulo responds that his father asked him to protect the Catholic church, the very church that raised him after his mother had passed away. After Duperron's suicide he realized that he, Paulo, is the only person left to do that. Aaron Weiner arrives with several Mossad and Shin Bet agents. They surround Orly and Paulo and demand he disarm himself. Paulo whispers in Orly's ear, "I wish things had played out differently", as Paulo draws a gun at Weiner - but he seems listless, as if he is not really going to fire his gun. Orly yells, "don't shoot him!" Paulo looks at Orly in the eyes as bullets are piercing his body.

HOLY FIRE 1850

The patriarchs and the cardinals all join for Constantinople Patriarchs wake at the Holy Sepulcher Church. The Pope gives his final speech, in which he emphasizes the similarities between the Patriarchs murder and Christs crucifixion. The Pope concludes, evil does not have the last word in our lives. Christ the Savior tells us that Gods love is victorious. While the Pope speaks, we see the Russian Patriarch looking smug . He tells the Greek Patriarch this kind of ecumenical event is exactly like ones he had attended before. The Russian Patriarch points at the immovable ladder of the Holy Sepulcher Church and says, they shouldnt move that ladder just yet. The Pope remains in the Golgotha. Hes whispering something to Sister Shelley. Shelley returns with the Armenian Patriarch of Jerusalem. Together, the Pope and the Armenian Patriarch enter the Cavalry and walk out with the Holy Fire. The thousands of Orthodox believers are in tears - the Pope himself is passing the fire of Jesus. The crowd is in ecstasy, fire-washing themselves, and reporting mysterious luminous lights. On the surface, and despite the tragedy, it looks like the last obstacle to the unification has been removed with the Popes acceptance of the holy fire. Sister Shelley tweets triumphantly about the victory of the unification. Orthodox supporters of the unification are somewhat more cautious, as their patriarch has been murdered, but they try to keep a positive tone. Anti-unificationists on both sides use twitter and blogs to voice their objections to the unification. That night, Weiner tells Orly that he talked to the head of the Mossad: Orly will return to fieldwork as soon as next month. But Orly declines. She wants to start a new life. It is time she moved on. SIX MONTHS LATER Orly visits Paulos grave in a suburb of Lyon. No one has attended to the modest grave at the run-down cemetery, but Orly puts flowers on it. As she rises to her feet, we can tell that she looks pretty, peaceful, and about six months pregnant.

EASTER SUNDAY Jesus is resurrected.

News teams cover the Popes press conference with all of the patriarchs, in which he announces that the unification is official. The unified church can now get to work - saving souls from perdition. We cannot lose time in the effort to rebuild our churches. We call on all those who have left the church to come back and enjoy the fruits of our labor. The unification is a fact now. But in the media, skepticism abounds. The truth is that the assassination of the Patriarch is a traumatic event. Shelley pushes back attacks by using her Twitter account to compliment the Pope for his courage. Orly is summoned to the Pope. This is the first time Orly meets the Holy Father. Orly asks the Pope if someone who loved God and Church like Paulo did could feel real love for a woman. The Pope says he does not have the experience to answer that question, but he believes that God has given all humans the gift of love. At the investigation, the Shin Bet officers - together with Vatican Secret Service investigators - accuse Orly that she must have known what Paulo was up to; and if she didnt know, she should resign for incompetence. Orly is not offended. Shes much more preoccupied with Paulos death than with losing her job. She quietly tells them that Paulo didnt fool anyone because he didnt plan anything ahead. He was a lost man who didnt know where his allegiances should lie and made the wrong choice, which got him killed. Orlys resolve is convincing. The agents cant pin this one on her.

CHRISTIAN MYSTICISM
SUNDAY MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY

Important symbols and rituals of Christianity are used in The Jerusalem Paradox to heighten important themes, making for a visceral viewing experience.

PASSION OF CHRIST
Palm Sunday: Jesus comes to Jerusalem -- need for spiritual resurrection. After raising Lazarus from the dead, Jesus enters Jerusalem and is greeted by multitudes. In our story, the Pope and Patriarch arrive in Jerusalem and announce a spiritual resurrection - the unification of the world's most ancient churches. Holy Tuesday: Jesus is condemned a heretic by the Pharisees -- salvation through repentance. Sanhedrin leaders demand Jesus arrest. Jesus prophecies the destruction of Jerusalem. In our story, the first efforts to prevent the unification materialize into action, targeting the Popes authority. Maundy Thursday: Jesus eats Last Supper. He washes the feet of his disciples -- love defeats evil. Jesus washes the feet of believers and realizes Judas has betrayed him. Jesus and his followers eat the Last Supper. Overcome with remorse, Judas hangs himself before dawn. In our story, the Pope washes the feet of the person who betrayed him. During the Holy Communion, the betrayal is revealed. The traitor commits suicide late that night. Holy Saturday: Jesus returns in spirit -- final battle between good and evil. Jesus body is guarded by Roman soldiers. Sanhedrin members prepare his body for burial. In The Jerusalem Paradox, the Holy Fire ritual which symbolizes Jesus resurrection - serves as the catharsis: a life and a love story are sacrificed in a spiritual battle over the future of Christianity. Holy Monday: Jesus preaches to the flock -- the power of faith, the importance of spirituality. Jesus curses a fig tree, which immediately shrivels; he banishes money changers from the temple. In The Jerusalem Paradox, the Pope explains to the cardinals the importance of the unification, thus following Jesus footsteps in actions as well as in spirit. Spy Wednesday: Jesus is betrayed -- mans daily struggle with the forces of evil. Judas Iscariot conspires with the Sanhedrin to betray Jesus for money. In our story, the Pope is betrayed by his closest ally and Paulo confesses his deepest, most destructive desires to Cardinal Duperron. Good Friday: Jesus is crucified -- a test of faith in the face of intractable evil. Jesus carries his own cross to Cavalry. There, he is nailed to the cross. In his final words, Jesus asks God to forgive the heretics. In our story, the Pope and Patriarch retrace Jesus footsteps to his crucifixion. During this event, Orly risks her career and prevents disaster.

Holy Fire
The oldest ritual in Christianity. According to Orthodox believers, the Holy Fire erupts from Christ's tomb on Holy Saturday. The Greek Patriarch alone carries the Holy Fire out of the tomb with a candle. The flame (spirit of Christ) has mystical properties: Pilgrims in the church report being insensitive to pain while applying fire to their face (a ritual deemed fire-washing), seeing mysterious lights, and feelings of rapture and ecstasy. Catholics consider the Orthodox claim that fire erupts out of Jesus' tomb as charlatanry. The Holy Fire ritual serves as the point of contention between the Pope and Patriarch in our story. This ritual is the ultimate test of faith for each religion and for the unification itself.

Messiah and Anti-Christ

In Judeo-Christian belief, the Messiah is a leader anointed by God, descended from King David. In Catholicism, each Pope is believed to be chosen by God. Christian faith claims that Jesus was the Messiah. Many believe that the Second Coming of Christ will take place after the false Messiah, the Anti Christ, will appear. Jesus will face the Anti-Christ in Armageddon, the End of Days. In our story, both Pope and Patriarch serve as unique, Messiah-like spiritual leaders in each church. However, Grigor is convinced that the Pope is the Anti-Christ and that Armageddon can be facilitated by his assassination.

Holy Visions
Reports of Visions are always problematic for the organized Church, which needs to determine if the source is God, the Devil or mental illness. The Jerusalem Syndrome, for example, is a clinically-defined mental disorder, in which obsessive religious delusions are triggered by a visit to Jerusalem. 100 pilgrims suffer from it annually. In Catholic tradition, visions about the future of the world are entrusted to living humans by apparitions of Jesus, the Virgin and the Saints. In the last two centuries, four different popes have claimed to have received prophetic visions. In our story, the Popes motive for the unification emerges from visions. The Pope is accused of suffering from the Jerusalem Syndrome by oppositionists to the unification.

Easter Sunday: Jesus is resurrected -- evil has been defeated. The large stone covering Jesus tomb has been rolled away. Christ has resurrected, but only appears sporadically. In our story, the message of the unification is challenged by its enemies; it is uncertain whether the sacrifices that were made will pay off. The Jerusalem Paradox seems to have defeated the unification, but Orlys growth is reaffirmed.
SATURDAY SUNDAY

Stigmata
Reported cases of Stigmata can take different shapes. In general, they are bodily marks (e.g. blood) or sensations of pain in locations corresponding to the crucifixion wounds of Jesus. In our story, the Pope has a martyrdom vision in which he wakes up and subsequently sees blood on the palms and feels pain in his hands: it indicates the sacrifice he will have to pay for carrying through with the unification.

LOCATIONS
The locations used in The Jerusalem Paradox are important pilgrimage sites. Most believers, and indeed most of the viewers, will never get to physically visit these holy places.

Via Dolorosa Latin for Way of Suffering; it is the street in the Old City on which Jesus walked, while carrying his cross on the way to his crucifixion. Pilgrims walk through the fourteen Stations of the Cross on Easter week. Mount Zion This is an incredible venue in that it houses a Catholic church, a synagogue and a mosque-all in the same building. Dormition Abbey and The Last Supper Room The Abbey was built in 1900 on the ruins of Hagia Sion, an ancient Byzantine Church. It hosts the Last Supper Room, where Jesus dined before his final arrest. King Davids Tomb The resting place of King David, whose descendent will be the Messiah. Nabi Dauds Mosque A mosque dedicated to Prophet David, the Muslim title of King David.

Al Aqsa Mosque & The Golden Tomb The third holiest site to Islam, which sits on the remains of the Jewish Temple. According to Islam, the Prophet Muhammad was transported here from Mecca during his Night Journey.

Holy Lavra of St. Savas This monastery is one of the most ancient and important to Orthodox faith. It is tucked away in the cliffs of Kidron Valley, the site where the resurrection of the dead will commence.

Tomb of Virgin Mary At the foot of Mount Olives, this is the place in which Virgin Mary's body was buried and from which she resurrected three days after her entombment.

Church of All Nations A Roman Catholic Church on the Mount of Olives, which contains a bedrock where Jesus prayed before his arrest.

Old City Tunnels The subterranean system that runs underneath the Old City. The Tunnels are convoluted pathways that have survived for two millennia.
