My group and I are observing the three different levels of the library at UNCC.

When you make plans to go to the library that usually means you have schoolwork you need to do or a test to study for. As a student of UNCC I have been to the library many times. I usually sit on the second or third floor near the stairs when you first walk in. I feel that many other students choose a specific location of the library based on their peer group and what they want to accomplish in being there. TV shows and movies portray libraries as places that allow absolutely no talking and have a librarian watching your every move. There should be no eating in the library. The library should be used to find resources for school projects and work on homework on your breaks. In my observations, I expect to see many people working on computers on the first floor. On the second floor I plan to see more of a social setting unless you are observing the periodicals. On the third floor I think you will most likely see a quite setting but more of a group setting. I am interested to see how different groups of students are more likely to sit on specific levels. I am also interested to see how sitting in a particular area prohibits or allows you to finish your work. Many students use the library and its resources on a daily basis and others rarely ever go. I plan to compare and contrast the differences and the similarities of the library as a whole and how they relate to each specific floor. Library Interview: First floor 1. Discourse communities are described as a specific group of people that are interested in the same things and share common goals. For this assignment I will be describing what Ive observed on three different levels of the library. When you make plans to go to the library that usually means you have schoolwork you need to do or a test to study for. As a student of UNCC I have been to the library many times. I usually sit on the second or third floor near the stairs when you first walk in. Within this particular discourse community the actors consist mostly of students, librarians, and teachers. These actors chose specific locations within the discourse community based on their peer group and what they desire to accomplish. Their specific literacy practices help demonstrate how they interact with others while being there.
