Operating principle
Having defined the lighting and choice of optical equipment, the vision system is based on the concept: acquisition, digitalisation, then analysis of an image. b Lighting and choice of optical equipment The lighting is a deciding factor regarding the success of a vision system application. The lighting system and optical equipment must be set-up according to the results required. b Acquisition of the image The capturing of the view is performed by a camera with an analogue video type output signal. b Digitalisation of the image The acquired image is digitalised. It is broken down into 256 shades of grey with a resolution higher than 250,000 pixels (512 x 480). b Analysis of the image The image is analysed according to the monitoring parameters (checkers): line, binary window, grey-scale window, binary edge, grey-scale edge, feature extraction, matching and character recognition. These monitoring parameters are associated with position, rotation and exposure adjustment functions. Analysis of the image enables verification of: - dimension, - position, - presence/absence, - imprint, etc. The analysis results are output (display, logic outputs, etc.).

Lighting systems
Lighting is an essential part of the vision system. It is defined according to the environment, space, type of application, type of monitoring to be performed and speed of the object to be detected. The lighting system must be selected in order to obtain the best enhancement of the object that the user wishes to monitor in the application. Examples of lighting systems: b Shower system The shower system comprises a series of radially mounted LEDs. It is a very powerful lighting system which enables illumination of the object along its axis, from above. The shower system is recommended for monitoring precision, markings, etc.
b Back light system The lighting is placed behind the object and facing the camera. The diffused lighting provides a clear silhouette of the object (shadow puppet). The back light system is recommended for measuring the sides of an object or analysing opaque elements encapsulated in glass.
b Bar system The bar system is used for highlighting a small surface area of the object to be detected and casting a shadow. The bar system is recommended for location of specific flaws, monitoring of screw threads, etc. Each object must be strictly positioned in the same manner.
b Low angle system (oblique) The low angle system enables edge detection, monitoring a marking and detecting flaws on glass or metal surfaces. The low angle system is recommended for monitoring printed characters, surface condition, detecting grooves, scratches, etc.
b Coaxial system By directing the light towards a semi-reflective mirror, the coaxial system enables highlighting of smooth surfaces perpendicular to the optical axis. The coaxial system is recommended for monitoring, analysing and measuring flat metal and other reflective surfaces.
