F ROM THE P RINCIPAL

Walking into Orana on my first day of work as your new principal four weeks ago, was a powerful experience. It struck me right away that the families of our school community have given their children such a gift. To be able to go to school in such a beautiful setting, surrounded by nature, rather than concrete urban buildings, is truly special. Added to this your choice of education will ensure your child receives a rich curriculum that will hold for life. Thank you for choosing to send your child to Orana. I hope to meet you all over time and am especially looking forward to talking to you about your aspirations and wishes for your child and to share my understanding of what a Steiner education brings. Shortly we will be sending out information about sessions where you will have the opportunity to come to school to meet me to talk about anything that may be on your mind. If you have any specific topics or questions you would like to explore I welcome these too. Please email me at dee.whitby@oranaschool.com anything you might like me to include in the planning of discussions for the rest of the year. Bringing your child to a Steiner School means becoming part of the life of the school and we need and appreciate parent support on a number of fronts. Over the last month I have had the privilege of meeting the team of staff members at Orana. Whether it be the dedicated teachers in the classrooms or the hardworking people who look after all the other aspects of the school it is clear that everyone wants the best for Orana and there is a commitment to this next stage of the school's journey. There are many outward signs which include the building which we will be able to open in Term 2, the beautiful new sculpture created by Michael Thompson (Class 1), the smell of new books in the classrooms, the changes in the physical environment of the office and the summer work that took place in our gardens. The inner signs are not so obvious but I see it in the outcomes of the conference that all our teachers attended for the whole week before school began, in the review and reflection of the curriculum and in strong connections the children have with each other and with their teachers. 2013 is going to be an exciting year for Canberra and for Orana. My relationship with Steiner education began when we began searching for an education for our first child that met our values as parents. It was a leap of faith as it was so different from the education we had received ourselves and there was much we did not understand. However, the impulse we felt was strong so we made the decision to commit to the education and have never regretted it. Nicholas and Shelley are now upright, young adults who are out in the world following their careers and contributing. Nicholas is a construction project manager and Shelley is a high school Science teacher. I have been married to Chris for 33 years and I am counting the days until he is able to join me in Canberra. I initially did my state teacher training in South Africa and after a few years teaching in the state system I followed my children to the Steiner School and took up my first class. It is a great source of joy to me that I am still in regular contact with nearly all my first class who are all now in their late 20's working in all kinds of fields. I undertook Steiner training while teaching and at the same time began learning about the administration of the school. As well as a passion for education I have always had a keen interest in finances, the law and organisation skills. After our decision to leave South Africa for New Zealand 17 years ago I decided to reenter the state education system. After a few years of working in various education settings I was drawn back to Steiner education taking the role of principal of the Auckland Steiner School in 2002. My 11 years at Michael Park has been invaluable and I was able to develop a much deeper understanding of not only the education aspect from early childhood to Year 12 but also to develop my skills in management and organisation. I am thrilled to be at Orana and am grateful to the Board for giving me the opportunity to work here. I am also very appreciative of the warm, supportive welcome I have received from the staff. Walking around the school and seeing the attitude and qualities of the young people we are fortunate enough to teach, I am very glad to be here. Dee Whitby

Orana Performing Arts Centre (OPAC) Update

Progress has been made over summer on the construction of our wonderful new OPAC. We expect the builder's work to be finished within the next two months and to receive our Certificate of Occupancy in Term 2. The emphasis is now on electrical work and other finishing trades. Apart from the builder's construction work, in the next two to three months we will also be tackling the remaining work that's necessary for OPAC to be used in all the ways we have been looking forward to in recent years: installing PA / audiovisual equipment and curtains, as well as carrying out some landscaping. Michael Brown Business Manager

Bulletin Update
This first Bulletin of the year has been compiled to inform our community of the various aspects of our school life that are important to get Term 1 underway. We are in the process of changing the means by which we are communicating with our families and this is an interim effort. We hope that you will enjoy reading it despite the simplicity of the presentation. We are taking on board feedback from parents through surveys and other means and understand that there is a need to review communication. To that end we are looking at ways we can be more effective in our communication with you including the presentation of the written notices and bulletins you receive. We welcome ideas and suggestions and over the next couple of weeks we will be presenting some new ideas and ways of communicating with you. Watch this space! We are committed to offering relevant information to our community and will endeavour to do so in an exciting and inclusive way. Thank you for your support and readership. Working Bee
Saturday 23rd February 9 am 3 pm Meet at the Canteen RSVP to workingbee@oranaschool.com

C OMMUNITY H OURS
A warm welcome to our School! For our new families Orana is a new experience for others, it is like returning to a familiar place. We hope you have had restful holidays and that your children are happy to have started school. Anne Ligthart has left the School and I am now your new contact for Community Hours matters. You can contact me at community.hours@oranaschool.com or by ringing the School Office on 6288 4283. If I am not able to take your call please leave a message with the receptionist and I will call you back as soon as I can. Community Hours is an opportunity for parents to help look after our School and be involved in the Orana community. The scheme was developed as a way to involve families in a number of activities that will help the School and save costly alternative service provisions. Each family is expected to contribute 30 hours a year or pay the equivalent of $25 per hour not worked. If your child or children attend Pre-School, you only have to work 15 hours per year. The same applies if you are a single parent and solely responsible for the payment of fees. The Community Hours Year started in Term 4 of the previous year and will finish at the end of Term 3 of the current year. If you are a new family starting at Orana this term you have to complete 22.5 hours by the end of Term 3. Some families elect to pay for Community Hours rather than work for them. I will assist you the best I can in making your CH commitment practical and worthwhile for your family. Soon you will receive a copy of the revised Community Hours Handbook. It will provide you with information regarding the different activities you can get involved in to earn Community Hours. Meanwhile you can join us on Saturday, 23rd February for a Working Bee. On the day, we will focus on the grounds and small maintenance jobs. The Working Bee will start at 9:00am and finish at 3:00pm. Our meeting point is the Canteen where you can register for the hours that you want to complete on the day. Your children are welcome providing they are at an age where they can play safely along side of you while you work. Childcare will not be provided. There is no need to bring lunch as food will be served at the canteen, compliments of the Parents and Friends Association (P&F). Parents who want to help with food preparation for community hours can contact Dennis Rose on 0410 669 350. You will need to bring a hat, gardening gloves and wear some strong shoes. It would help us plan for the Working Bee and catering needs if you emailed workingbee@oranaschool.com to inform us of your attendance on the day. We look forward to a great year of Community Hours activities that will make a difference to life of our children at Orana. MarieMarie-Anne Gigon for Community Hours

Medical Forms
For the safety of your children, please return completed forms to the School Office or email to info@oranaschool.com as soon as possible. It is imperative that we receive your childs medical forms in order to provide appropriate first aid. Information on the medical forms will also be used to update you contact details for the School Phone Directory. Please advise us if you do not want your details published.

Early School Departures

Parents please note the following important procedures when taking children out of school before the end of the day. For Primary School students a parent or guardian needs to sign them out at the School Office. For High School students, a signed note from the parent or guardian needs to be presented to the High School Office and then the student can sign out. If your child is returning to School that same day then they need to be signed back in.

Tax File Numbers and Students

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO), offers students aged 13 years or over the opportunity to apply for a tax file number (TFN) through the school. Students need a TFN for employment, applying for Centrelink benefits, opening a bank account or deferring university fees. Applying for a TFN through the school is easier because students do not need to show identifying documentation to the ATO. The application form is available from me in the High School (Senior Resource Centre) and students can complete it at home. Once completed, the form is to be returned to me, and I forward it onto the ATO. Students will receive their TFN via a notification letter sent to their postal address, within 28 days of the application being received by the ATO (it usually takes around 2 weeks). Tracey Miller High School Secretary

Giving Tree thank you

A big thank you to everyone who contributed to the Giving Tree last Christmas. The Salvation Army where extremely grateful and thankful for the collection of gifts. XXXXXX

Road Safety Reminder

Parents, please talk to your children about road safety. Ensure they know to only cross at the marked crossing on Hickey Court and LOOK BOTH WAYS before moving. Smaller children should always be accompanied by an adult when crossing roads. Parents need to be a model for their children and use the crossing at all times. We have noticed that parents are dropping off children on the crossing or at the bus stop. This is not a safe practice and must be stopped. Also, it is essential that parents do not park their cars in the Sett Down and Pick Up areas around the School. This is causing a lot of congestion especially in the afternoon. Please only park in designated parking areas. If your child rides to school, it is safer to cross Unwin Place before 8.45am when the traffic intensifies. Thank you for your support in this important road safety matter.

New Deanes Bus Passes have arrived!

We have received the 2013 Deanes bus passes for students travelling from NSW. If you are expecting a new bus pass, please check with Eve or Esther at the School Office.

M USIC N EWS
Welcome back to another year filled with musical promise. Orana's staff enjoyed singing together at our recent conference in January. We hope you enjoyed hearing us at the first school assembly. Over the holidays music staff have been busy preparing and planning activities and programmes to suit the wide variety of ages and interests of Orana's music students. We look forward to some exciting new performance opportunities this year especially once our new hall (OPAC) is finished!

Bringing instruments to School

Ensembles have started again, and parents are asked to help their children remember to bring their instruments to school on ensemble days as follows: Monday Tuesday 4RG String Programme 4CP String Programme

Wednesday Class 5 Ensemble Thursday Class 6 Ensemble Class 7 Ensemble Class 8 Ensemble High School Volunteer Orchestra Class 9 Ensemble Class 10 Ensemble Classes 6 & 7 Volunteer Orchestra Vertical Streaming Ensemble (High School) Year 11 Performance Practice Group

Friday

Class 4s also need to remember to bring completed practice diary and string homework to make best use of their final semester of the string programme. Parents are reminded that ensemble is compulsory for all children in Classes 5-10.

Lost Instruments
A couple of Orana violins have gone missing, possibly having been accidentally taken home by students. Please check at home to see if you have one! Return to Jenny's classroom or the School Office - no questions asked!

String Instruments at School

We have many valuable instruments coming to school each week. Many are fragile and a small bump can cause expensive damage. The Music Committee recommends that they are stored in Jenny's room or the Music Room from 8:50am-3:15pm each day. Remember also that cellos should not be transported on buses, and that any wooden instrument should not be left in a car at any time as temperatures can rise extremely quickly causing irreparable cracking. Instruments are best stored out of the sun in an environment with an even temperature.

Voluntary Music Groups

The following groups will be available for enthusiastic Orana musicians this year:

Primary School Voluntary Orchestra - will be held at 2:35pm on Friday afternoons and is
open to enthusiastic instrumentalists from Classes 6 and 7. We will be learning a variety of music and will take advantage of performing possibilities! The Primary School Voluntary Orchestra forms the basis of the Festival Orchestras and also performs at concerts in and out of the school. Children who wish to be involved in this group have permission to leave their regular classroom activities for this class.

Primary School Choir (conducted by Maia) - enthusiastic singers from Class 4 upwards can join
our Monday afternoon group in the Music Room from 3:15pm to 4pm beginning on Monday 14th February. The choir will sing for enjoyment and work towards various performances. Last year we sang at many concerts in the school as well as giving performances at the Yarralumla Uniting Church. This year we will again sing many types of music, sometimes with instruments and sometimes unaccompanied. We play games to increase musical skills, do vocal warm ups and sometimes create our own songs. Commitment and enthusiasm are the only prerequisites (no extra fees required).

High School Voluntary Orchestra - rehearses in Jennys room on Thursday lunchtimes.

Last year this accomplished group performed to great acclaim on many diverse occasions. All committed High School instrumentalists welcome!

Peripatetic Music
Sadly we farewelled recorder teacher Rachel at the end of last year. Rachel is pursuing her career overseas and we wish her well. Orana is fortunate in having a range of experienced and dedicated peripatetic music teachers offering weekly lessons on violin, cello, double bass, flute, recorder, guitar and clarinet. These individual lessons support the children's music education and deepen individual children's musical experience. If you would like your child to learn an instrument or music theory please contact Genelle Carter on genelle.carter@oranaschool.com or Maia Harrison via the School Office or on maia.harrison@oranaschool.com.

Twilight Concerts 2013

We are eagerly anticipating another joyous concert series this year. If you or your child in class 4 and above would like to perform, please let Maia, Liam, Maria, Bronwyn or Jenny know and we will try to slot you in! Our first Twilight concert will be on Friday 22nd March at 5:45-7pm in the Senior Resource Centre. Looking forward to seeing you there! Maia Harrison for the Music Committee

N EWS F ROM THE F INANCE T EAM

A welcome back to all our existing families and a big hello to all our new families. We hope your summer holidays were restorative and relaxing. We are busy in the Finance Office closing off last years records and getting ready for the billing of school fees. This year we will be billing this term for the whole years fees. We advised this change in our email to you late last year on the 11th December 2012. Our aim for this change is give you a clearer picture of your costs for the year and to assist you with planning your yearly budgets. However please keep in mind that we will still need to bill for your childs other curricular activities such as swimming and any excursions etc. as they occur throughout the year. These costs are not covered in the school fees so at the end of each term we will be sending a statement with your up-to-date balance. Billing for After School Care Fees and Playgroup will remain the same i.e. monthly for After School Care and each term for Playgroup. Our repayment arrangements have not changed. Your options being - in full, by the term or by direct debit (fortnightly or monthly). The option of DIRECT DEBIT from either a credit card or your Bank Account is a free service that we offer. We can work out the annual fees that will need to be paid, divide them by a number of fortnights or months and you can make regular payments over the course of the year. This gives you assurance that your fees are being paid on time, and you will not incur any late fees. Please contact Kim (ext. 307) who will help you with this. We are progressively working towards emailing your statements. This term we will be emailing AND mailing them so we would appreciate your advice immediately if you do not receive your statement both in the post and in your inbox; we can then be sure that your records are current and correct. On a closing note, I would like to formally extend a big welcome to our two new staff in the Finance Office Clare who is our Accounts Payable Clerk/Finance Receptionist and Kim who is in charge of our Accounts Receivables (school fees, ASC and Playgroup). They are both very excited about working at Orana and we are very happy to have them. Please do not hesitate to pop in and see us if you have any questions at all about your fees. Kind regards to all Cathrine, Kim and Clare

The staff at Orana After School Care (ASC) are delighted to welcome the return of several continuing children and to meet so many new faces. The program operates from 3pm to 5.55pm Monday to Friday during the school term. An additional Kindergarten only session is offered from 12.30pm to 3pm each Friday as a support for those parents. Orana ASC offers 26 places per day and has some vacancies at present. Information/enrolment documents are available via the School Office or After School Care. P ARENTS & F RIENDS A SSOCIATION

The Orana Parents and Friends Association (P&F) is a separately incorporated association, which belongs to the parents, teachers and staff of Orana. The P&F is a vital part of the Orana community. It offers parents opportunities to meet each other and share information and to become more involved with their school through a number of community-building events and fundraising activities. The P&F is run by an Executive Committee of volunteers from the school community and is also directly responsible for the Orana P&F Shop, a store of events equipment as well as the organisation of Class Coordinators. The P&F supports a number of school community activities and events such as the Craft n Cafe, Community Markets, Autumn Picnic, Birthday Dinner and the Spring Fair. Orana parents and teachers are automatically members of the Association and are welcome at any of the General Meetings held monthly at the school. Orana P&F Shop

Part of the unique landscape of Orana is our own P&F Shop, located a stone's throw away from the School Office. School t-shirts in rainbow colours, hats and inside shoes are only a small part of what is available. You will also find many of the specialty art and craft supplies the children use in the classrooms, such as modelling beeswax, watercolour paints and paper and block crayons. The shop also stocks the Sonnett range of cleaning products which are also used in the classrooms. Sonnett is an anthroposophically-minded brand which supports biodynamic agriculture in creating its very lovely hand soaps, washing powder and other household necessities. These really are a treat to use and you'll feel good about it. There are good reasons to support the shop; as much as possible. We aim to price things below retail so you save a bit. Also, all the profits go to the Orana P&F Association which in turn returns the profits to the School via a donation at the beginning of each school year. All parents and friends are invited to make things to sell in the shop. You could make a bit of extra pocket money and we are always so grateful to have handmade treasures available. Of particular interest are small Waldorf handcrafts such as gnomes, animals for nature tables and felted dolls. The shop is run by volunteers from the School community in exchange for Community Hours. If you would like to complete your community hours in the shop please contact Anita on 6288 4837. The Shop is open from 2:45-3:45pm daily and on Friday mornings from 8.45-9.30am. Hope to see you in there soon! Veronica Grobben Shop Manager

Craft Group - Calling all Crafters

Are you interested in Steiner-inspired craft? Do you enjoy a coffee or a tea in lovely company? Would you like to meet other Orana parents for a chat? Are you keen on learning new skills or sharing your expertise? Then Craft Group is the right place for you! Craft Group operates every Friday morning during school term from 9am till 12am in the Gumnut room, close to the front office. Everyone associated with Orana (parents, grandparents, families waiting to attend) is very welcome to join the dedicated group in making Steiner-inspired toys for the Spring Fair in November. Feel free to bring your children as there is a playground next to the Gumnut room. No formal supervision is provided during Craft Group and parents are responsible for the supervision of their own child or children. This years coordinator team includes Anke Maria (Term 1), Liz (Term 2), Lee (Term 3) and Jo (Term 4). Helen McMartin is our Treasurer and Maria Lomax is looking after the Caf side of things. Contributions for a shared morning tea are always greatly appreciated. During first term Craft Group is rich with flat felt projects, wet felting and later in the term with gnome and doll making. All newcomers are most certainly welcome to join the fun - no craft experience necessary for that as all projects have been tried and tested and step-by-step instructions are given at the beginning of each session. We also have some make-at-home projects (woodwork) for anyone interested. Craft Group happily accepts donations of Steiner-inspired craft materials, which can be left in the Craft Group basket in the front office or dropped off during Craft Group sessions. At this stage we would be especially delighted to receive a donation of a no longer needed A-frame blackboard stand for our craft sessions. If you are interested in our weekly updates or have any questions regarding Craft group please email craftgroup@oranaschool.com. Looking forward to another very productive and fun craft group year! N OTICES
are meeting already again in this new school year - at 8 am in the Senior Resource Centre every Thursday morning. When school finished at the end of 2012 we retreated to Birrigai for 3 days and workshopped our leadership skills, had fun, and looked forward to our individual initiatives for 2013 - all focussed on making a difference in the world. We'll keep you posted on our projects, but for now we want to let you know what Waste Busters is up to.

Stars of Hope

WASTE BUSTERS

is advertising for a new Coordinator, while this is a volunteer position, it does credit you with Community Hours. Hours We are also open to two people who can work well together fulfilling this role. And you get to work with a highly motivated group of high school and senior college students and their families who volunteer to show Canberrans how waste can be easily sorted at big public events. Stars of Hope members and other student volunteers delight in showing people what to do with their rubbish, significantly reducing landfill and raising public awareness of this most basic and fundamental change we can make in our prosperous, garden city, If you have some space in your garage, are interested in coordinating Waste Busters involvement in up to 5 events in 2013, and have the skills to do that (it's not complicated, you just have to be an organiser, and Jennifer Salkeld will mentor you!) - then contact Jennifer at jennifer.salkeld@environment.gov.au or Julie at mj.armstrong@bigpond.com or Cheryl at cherylnekvapil@yahoo.com

Volunteers needed for Waste Station duty - purely for the good of our spot here on Earth. THE CANBERRA CENTENARY PARTY AT COMMONWEALTH GARDENS, Monday 11th March 2013 is our next big Waste Busters event. We are calling for volunteers to be at the waste stations now. Contact Jennifer at jennifer.salkeld@environment.gov.au now not to miss getting a spot at one of the waste stations. Cheryl Nekvapil School Chaplain funded by the Commonwealth NSCSWP

Screen Holiday
Electronic entertainment screens are a part of our culture. The Screen Holiday is an invitation to set some or all of them aside for a week and get a perspective on what the screens bring into your lives that you enjoy or dont enjoy, the times of day and spaces in our lives that they fill. How do families manage screen time as kindergarten children become young adults? How do families deal with a wide range of ages in the family, keen players of sport or separated parents with different views?
