The Cenotes Of Yucatan The state of Yucatan, Mexico has over 3,000 cenotes. Cenotes form when acidic groundwater percolates through the surface crust and seeps through cracks in the limestone bedrock. Eventually areas of softer rock are dissolved, sometimes leaving huge underground caverns. Later the thin layer of crust above the cavern collapses, leaving a open hole filled with water. The entire process takes thousands of years. Many cenotes are connected by subterranean rivers. Scuba divers have explored and mapped many of the waterways, but more than 70% remain undiscovered. Skeletal remains of animals and people have been found in these underwater cave systems. They probably fell in and drowned. Nowadays tourists can visit and even swim in some cenotes. The Cenotes Of Yucatan We lay floating on our backs, looking up through a portal of limestone, past the overhanging vegetation to the sky beyond. Tree roots dangle down the rock walls, reaching towards the water, while little fish nibble at our feet from below. Another day at the old swimming hole? Yes, except this swimming hole is really old, and it is 75 feet below ground level. We are floating in one of the over 3,000 cenotes that formed in the Yucatan over thousands of years. Cenotes form when acidic groundwater percolates through the surface crust and seeps through cracks in the limestone bedrock. Eventually areas of softer rock are dissolved, sometimes leaving huge underground caverns. Later the thin layer of crust above the cavern collapses, leaving an open hole filled with water. Because of dense vegetation and difficult topography, probably only 10 to 35% of all cenotes have been discovered in the Yucatan. Cenotes gradually fill in with organic and mineral debris, and may eventually become a dry, shallow basin overgrown with plants and trees. Many of the cenotes are just large pools interconnected by subterranean rivers. This excites scuba divers, who seek to explore and map these hidden waterways. Many of these rivers run for thousands of feet between cenotes. A multitude of skeletal remains of animals and humans have been found in these water filled cave systems, which has caused speculation that the people in the area once practiced ritual sacrifice. But it seems more likely that animals and people simply occasionally fell into the pools and drowned. Also, because the cenotes were a precious water source in a land with little surface water, it seems unlikely that the people would pollute the cenotes by throwing corpses into them. Nowadays, those that own a cenote let tourists throw their sunburned carcasses into the pools for a ritual cooling off from the often oppressive heat experienced at ground level. Ceremonial offerings never sink to the bottom of the pool, but instead goes into the hands of the entrepreneur as the price of admission. Small tunnels with carved steps provide access to the pool below. If one can suppress the claustrophobic feeling, a dip in the pure cool waters of a cenote is a singular experience unlikely to be forgotten. Just remember to stay away from the drain.
