The profile (1) The carriage (2)
Also the aluminium carriage profile has been optimised using FEM methods. The plastic or steel rollers (mounted on roller bearings and lubricated for life) are set via the eccentric to be without play on all sides. The carriage can be supplied in two sizes as the standard carriage with 12 rollers or extended carriage with 24 rollers. Simple and adjustable attachment of operating cams by means of longitudinal grooves on the sides. Height and bolt points are unaffected when the steel strip cover is attached at a later date.

The drive module (10)

M

The tensioning station (3)

By using the finite element method we have managed to optimise the aluminium extrusion bar profile to maximum rigidity (torsion and deflection) at minimum weight. The modular concept permits the use of the same profile for all HPLA variants: drive version with timing belt drive version with rack-and-pinion guide with plastic rollers on anodised aluminium guide with steel rollers on a steel strip which is integrated into the profile. The rack-and-pinion (11) is housed within the profile in a protected manner - it is therefore also now possible to use a steel strip cover with this drive variant. 6 steel strips (8) are admitted into the profile of the version with steel rollers. The profile can be supplied in cross sections of 80 x 80 (HPLA80), 120 x 120 (HPLA120), 180 x 180 (HPLA180). Two assembly grooves are located on both the two sides and on the bottom. These can be used in accordance with DIN-508 for Tnuts to fasten additional mechanical components and to connect several linear actuators. When combined with the covering profile (9), this forms cable ducts, e.g. for the initiator cables. An easily accessible tensioning station which is simple to maintain and assemble. It is used to set the necessary tension of the timing belt and its orientation (parallel to the pulleys). The rack-and-pinion drive offers all the advantages of a timing belt drive, but without the usual drawbacks. The short timing belt (which is independent of travel length) reduces belt stretching to an absolute minimum. The combination of plastic timing belts and an aluminium rack-and-pinion is a safe and clean drive which requires no lubrication.

The drive station (4)

The HPLA can be delivered with numerous drive options. Everything is possible from the pulley mounted on gearbox shaft through a fully supported hollow shaft up to a drive shaft on left, on right or on both sides.

Advantages of the rack-andpinion drive:

high constant rigidity regardless of the travel or position very long travel distances achievable high levels of accuracy high speeds are possible no lubrication necessary any installation position possible

The timing belt (5)

The timing belt has no play and is reinforced by integral steel wires, thereby ensuring maximum travel speeds and repeatability.

Clamping of timing belt (6)

The timing belt clamping angle and the large area of the clamping guarantees a secure connection between the timing belt and the carriage. The clamping system allows the timing belt to be replaced without the load attachment plate having to be dismantled. This means that attachments do not normally need to be removed.

The following options can be supplied

Steel strip cover Integrated linear encoder for maximum accuracy (! page 34) Profile extending flange(s) for large strokes Corrosion-resistant VA version for harsh environmental conditions or for applications in the clean room or the food industry and/or pharmaceuticals.

The load attachment plate (7)

The longitudinal grooves integrated on the top of the plate offer many options for the assembly of attachments. When used in conjunction with our clamping profiles, this allows for simple incorporation in a multiple axis system.

Additional mass moment of inertia due to effective load and weight of timing belt: see page 35. Longitudinal flange connection can be used for longer travel paths. For actuators with timing belt drive some restrictions have to be considered: maximum permitted load, drive torque, travel speed, acceleration and repeatability. (see page 27). For Linear actuators with rack-and-pinion drive the travel distance is unlimited (as far as the linear actuator is concerned) depending only on power input from the drive. Applies for the standard delivery condition with hollow shaft. For higher torques or forces please contact us. Technical data issued 09/03, safety factor taken into consideration S=1. Data applies for a temperature range of between -10C and + 40C. The technical data applies under standard conditions and only for the individually specified operating mode and nature of load. In the case of compound loads, it must be verified in accordance with the laws of physic and technical standards, whether single data have to be reduced. Please contact us in the case of doubt.

Linear actuators HPLA

Load bearing capacity of timing belt and carriage
The thrust force Fx the timing belt is capable of transferring depends on its pretension. If nothing other is indicated the HPLA will be delivered with a standard pretension. With this pretension the HPLA is able to transfer the nominal thrust force F_nom. If your application needs a higher thrust force the timing belt gets a higher pretension and is able to transfer thrust forces up to F_max. If the thrust force Fx you transfer is greater than the pretension of timing belt it can happen that the timing belt jumps on the pulley. The service life (s_nom. / s_max) of the drive chain (without guiding system; with pulley mounted on gearbox shaft: bearing of gearbox), depends on the pretension and the thrust force that occurs. The forces and torques the carriage is capable of transferring is speed-dependent. The curves shown in the graphs apply to a standard carriage (S/T). With the extended carriage (E/F) all the values apart from Fx (loadbearing capacity of timing belt) can be doubled, if the load is applied equally to both halves of the carriage or distributed uniformly along its entire length. The curves show the maximum load-bearing capacity of a carriage in one direction of force or torque. If several loads are applied in different directions, the values given by the curves must be derated, i.e. the load or speed should be reduced if necessary. For the precise carriage dimensioning, our software "DimAxes" is available (! free download: http://www.parker-eme.de). (! Page 33). Thrust force HPLA80 Fx

Definition of stroke, usable stroke and safety travel

Usable stroke: The usable stroke is the stroke you need for your application. It is always shorter than the stroke. Stroke: The stroke to be specified in the order code is the maximum mechanical stroke between the internal end-buffers. It exists from:

Stroke = Usable stroke + right safety travel + left safety travel + 20mm*7
The right and left safety travel is in each case the safety travel which is required in order to slow down the linear actuator collision free with an emergency stop ramp after over-driving of a limit switch. Fmax shows the maximum allowed braking force (with the maximum permissible belt pre-tension) for each actuator and may not be exceeded (In the case of a lower belt tension, Fx has to be reduced analogous). In the case that the breaking force resulting out of the maximum braking moment of the drive or brake is less than Fmax, you need a longer safety travel. The delay time of the control unit has also to be taken into consideration. If necessary appropriate additional shock absorbers have to be mounted.

m [kg]

Key: m: Effective load in kg (With HPLA with rack-and-pinion drive you have to add the weight of the motor and the gearbox to the effective load) v: Velocity of linear actuator before slowing down in m/s. F: Braking force of drive inside the emergency stop-ramp in N. s: The required safety travel s in mm that results from moved weight, velocity and braking force. Example: The example in the diagram shows the determination of a safety travel for a HPLA80 with 50kg effective load (2), slowed-down from a velocity of 2m/s (3) with the maximum permissible force for this actuator F_Nom. (925N) (1). The required safety travel is then approximately 110mm (5).

*7 We recommend to add approx. 10mm additional travel on each side as compensation of the switching hysteresis of the limit switches or depending on the control unit - as additional travel for a software limit stop.

Longitudinal flange connection set

Longitudinal flange plates make it possible to enlarge the usable stroke to more than the double amount. A flange connection is always necessary if the maximum travel path (see: technical data, page 6) is exceeded. Profile sections should normally if no other indication is given and if possible - be split in the middle of the profile. The connecting point should always be close to a fixing point. The bearing distance should generally be between 1.0m and 1.5m. For an HPLA with timing belt drive and a longitudinal flange connection, the load data must be reduced (if the maximum permissible stroke is exceeded, see technical data on page 6). In this case, the HPLA should only be installed with open side of profile in the top or the bottom. With steel roller guide only one longitudinal flange is permissible! Cable carrier
A cable carrier is needed when making power connections to moving elements. The cable carrier chain consists of Igumid, and the support profile is made of aluminium. The process for fully determining the dimensions of a cable carrier is very complex. The examples listed below represent simple applications, but more data will normally be required when the situation is less straightforward. The following descriptions only apply to power supplies arranged horizontally, which lie above a support profile and which are within the limits specified in the technical data. If the application you are running is more demanding, please contact us.

Guidelines for using cable carriers

Use only electrical cables which are suitable for use in cable carriers. Hose lines should be highly flexible and should only extend slightly under pressure. Weight should be distributed across the cable track as evenly as possible! Cables must not be twisted when routed in the cable carrier and should be routed next to one another and as loosely as possible. Avoid laying several lines on top of each other and laying lines of different diameters directly next to one another. If multiple layers must be used, separating strips should be inserted between each layer should such circumstances arise, please contact Parker. If there is no alternative to routing several lines beside each other without sub-divisions, the clearance height within the carrier must be less than line diameter. This d is the only way of preventing the cables from twisting.
<d

Higher Speed or acceleration possible. This however reduces the life expectancy of the cable carrier. Usual life expectancy of the cable carrier with self supporting arrangement: 5 - 10 million travels. If you need larger travels the chain have to be supported (gliding construction). Please consult manufacterer.

electric line hose flat cable

The supply cables must be able to move freely in the cable carrier they must never be fastened or bundled together. Separating strips must always be inserted between flat cables routed in multiple layers. Recommended dimensions of the space required: with round cables: approx. 10% of the line diameter with flat cables: for each, approx. 10% of the cable width and cable thickness with hose lines: approx. 20% of the hose diameter

Highly flexible, thin lines with a low bending strength should be loosely gathered together and routed in order in a protective hose. When selecting the size of the protective hose, ensure that its area is considerably greater than the sum of the individual cross-sectional areas. As a guide, allow approximately 10 % of the diameter of each line as clearance.

Attachment of position sensors / Electronic accessories

Attachment variants for position sensors
Tripping plates, switches and distribution box are attached as standard on the same side as the motor. Attachment variant 5 is standard. The positions of the limit switches and of the machine origin must be set by the customer according to his specific application. The limit switches should be fitted ensuring that they are activated directly before the start of the safety travel (which is needed to stop the carriage and the moved load, see page 21). The tripping plate will be enclosed but not fitted with the carriage variant with bar (T/F). (The same applies for the initiator and limit switch for attachment variant 3). Tripping plate, limit switch and distribution box are described on page 31.

General
Linear encoder
By using a linear encoder the static position stiffness of the linear actuator increases, as well as its controllability and positioning accuracy. The static position stiffness describes the ability to retain the current position permanently even if an external force (such as a machining force) is applied. Due to the sensor is mounted on the load attachment plate an additional cable carrier is to be fitted ! see page 28. Attention! The sensor cable is not applicable to be mounted into in cable carriers chain. If not otherweise specified, the linear encoder is mounted on the same side as the motor. Otherwise please specify with your order "linear encoder right" or "linear encoder left" (see figure below).
