Lesson Title: Grade Level: Subject: CC/GPSs:

Researching recycling and ways we can keep the environment healthy through an internet based treasure hunt. rd 3 Grade Language Arts Description of Learning Goals, Standards, Objectives ELACC3RI1 Key Ideas and Details: Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers ELACC2L1 Conventions of Standard English: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking ELACC3RI5 Craft and Structure: Use text features and search tools (e.g., key words, sidebars, hyperlinks) to locate information relevant to a given topic efficiently ELACC3W2 Text Types and Purposes: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly

National Technology Standards:

Research and Information Fluency Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information. a. Plan strategies to guide inquiry b. Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media c. Evaluate and select information sources and digital tools based on the appropriateness to specific tasks d. Process data and report results

Long-Term Learning Goal or Outcome:

Students will demonstrate how to use the internet to locate relevant information on a topic. Students will also demonstrate how to convey this information through writing, as well as drawing their own conclusion and on the given topic with supporting details.

ABCD Objectives or Outcomes:

Students will be ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers. Students will be given a list of websites and You Tube videos to review. Students will then be asked to answer a series of questions as well as answering two big questions which will be posted on the classroom connection blog. The writing portion will require students to think critically and develop their own conclusion; in addition they must link at least two examples from the research in their response.

Assessment Plan:

Description of Assessment Students must answer the following questions to demonstrate that they have acquired and retain the research information. What is recycling? What happens to the recycled material, after it's been picked up from your home? How many plastic

containers end up in landfills each year? Students will also demonstrate critical thinking and writing skills through the classroom connection blog by posting their response to the following questions What will happen to our environment if we do not recycle? How can you make a difference? Description of Activities with Technology and Materials Activity Design: Researching recycling and ways we can keep the environment healthy through an internet treasure hunt. Class starter and lesson connection: In an open discussion, I would begin by talking about way I practice conservation. I would then ask students if they have any similar practice at home.

Teacher and student activities:

To make sure my students have a clear understanding of what we will be concentrating on. I would review the key words such as recycling, conservation and environment to help them connect the pervious lesson to the research. I would then demonstrate how the research should be conducted, through a separate treasure hunt I devise for the example. I would then answer any concerns or questions students may have at this time. Students will then be asked to get into groups of twos; they are to log on to the teachers website (my website) to complete the real treasure hunt. This assignment is students lead, with additional support from the teacher (me) Children with disabilities will have access to You Tube; they also will be provided a PowerPoint slide cataloging all the key details in the lessons. They will also be provided a modified curriculum, extra time to complete the assignments and audio text and concept mapping. Computer text will also be adjusted. Students will need computers and access to the internet to complete the assignment.

Technology Connection:

Creating an online treasure hunts are meaningful and an engaging ways to help students learn about critical issues. According to Egbert (2009) it can encourage students to be strategic. (p. 45). Student will be responsible for their own learning, while engaging in a lesson that is meaningful and enriching. Egbert (2009) also states, rather than just gathering information, students need task during which frame and investigate important questions. (p.45). Using technology to support content can renovate the learning experience and give students the ability to be creative, increase their problem solving skills and navigational skills, as well as transforming them into active thinkers.

It also helped me to narrow my focus to optimize the project. I felt that I incorporated many helpful resources and methods to help students to maximize their learning experience. I would change anything about the design. I think the technology artifact allows my students to navigate and obtain the resources they would need easily. Student are able to develop a higher thinking order because they have to navigate, read and choose the information that is relevant to the project, then analyze what they have learned. The technology is aligned perfectly; its an even balance of content and the internet. They complement each other, given students a chance to learn and explore.
