Learning Outcomes
Demonstrate skills to create a finished musical work in a defined style and evaluate its success and own skill development. Demonstrate contextual knowledge in relation to a specified style of music.

Scenario Hip Hop music has been called the new Rock and Roll pushing through from the underground to become a prominent force in youth and pop culture, spawning a myriad of sub genres, many of which are unique to the UK (Grime being the most well known). What better way to begin creating your own Hip Hop music than to understand the very nature of where Hip Hop music was derived, and placing it in context with cultural and social movements? You have been tasked with creating your own piece of Hip Hop music as well as producing a written piece of work demonstrating your contextual knowledge of the genre, making reference to two recorded examples by two prominent Hip Hop artists.

Assignment Composing Music


Working alone, compose a song or an instrumental three minutes duration reflective of a defined musical style suggested by the tutor using at least three of the following: a) rhythm track; b) bass line; c) harmonic progression; d) melody; e) lyrics Describe the layout of the composed piece using either: a) b) c) d) graphic diagrams; chord charts; stave notation annotated sequencer screen shots
