Drilling Laboratory
Today, PDC Drill Bit are used to more and more complex drilling operations and the objectives are always the same : achieve a high penetration rate, finish the drilling phase and hit the target. Mines de Paris/ARMINES, which is an independent research center, has developed many full scale test to obtain a full laboratory PDC Drill Bit Characterization and highlights the potential of each PDC Drill Bit. Based in Pau, in the south of France, near the Pyrenees mountain and the beautiful Basque coast, the Mines de Paris Drilling Laboratory conducts research projects and provides services for costumers in the field of oil and gas drilling

- DIRECTIONAL TEST
Drilling tests for characterizing the directional behavior of drill bits are conducted at the Mines de Paris since 1999. These tests allow the evaluation of the steerability and the walk tendency of a given drill bit. The tests are performed using the drilling bench fitted out with a special apparatus.
This consists to apply a side force on the bit by pulling laterally the rock sample for the push the bit configuration (b) or by deflecting the drilling shaft for the point the bit configuration (a). The computation of the magnitude and the direction of the lateral force on the bit allow calculating the drill bit response.
HYDRAULIC SIMULATOR
Controlling bit hydraulics effectively requires a complete knowledge of fluid behavior at the bottom hole that can be characterized by the fluid velocity profile or the resulting pressure distribution beneath the bit. The Mines de Paris developed special tests and procedures with the hydraulic bench simulator to quantify these parameters. Two kinds of tests can be done : - Test with paint is made to establish the pressure repartition and the fluid velocity on the bit face, - Test with small particles injected into the mud in the drillstring to visualize with a high speed camera their positions on the bit face.
DRILLABILITY CELL 1 :
The Drillability Cell 1 allows full-scale cutters tests by simulating deep hole drilling conditions (up to 26000 feet). Single Cutter tests are conducted by making a groove at constant depth of cut in rock samples that can be 6 long (14.4 cm) with a diameter of 8 (20.3 cm). The rock sample is held in a pressure vessel with constant confinement pressure (up to 11600 PSI), and, for permeable rock, pore pressure (up to 11600 PSI). Tests can be conducted with different type of mud and with a mud pressure varying from 0 to 11600 PSI.

DRILLABILITY CELL 2 :
During the cutting process, you can visualize how the cutter destroys the rock and what kind of cutting it made. Thus, after the test, to model the cutter-rock interaction, you have the forces versus time and mainly how the rock is destroyed recorded with a high speed camera.
