An industrial consumer has a maximum demand of 150 kW at a load factor of 0.65. The tariff is Rs 900 per kVA of maximum demand per year plus Rs 1.30 per kWh of energy consumed. If the power factor is 0.82 lagging, calculate the total energy consumed per year and the total yearly electricity bill at the following conditions: (i) (ii) The power factor is 0.82 The power factor is 0.95 [4 x 3 marks] What has been the savings/loss when the power factor has changed to 0.95? [1 mark] (Assume that it is NOT a leap year)
Question 3 (a) (b) (c) (d) Give two disadvantages of low power factor. Give two methods of improving the power factor of a system. [4 marks] [4 marks]
Show graphically the average power transfer of a system with zero power factor. [5 marks] A 230 V, 7.5 kW 50 Hz single phase motor working at full load with an efficiency of 80% has a power factor of 0.75 lagging. (i) (ii) Calculate the current supplied to the motor at full load. If a capacitor is connected across the motor terminal to raise the overall power factor to unity, find the current through the capacitor and the value of the capacitance in microfarads.
