standard, two-piece automatic tailgate, which opens and closes at the touch of a button.
Smaller items can be quickly and comfortably loaded using a separate lid below the rear
window. The advantage: passengers remain protected from cold and wind thanks to the
variable separating panel and the secure luggage compartment cover.
When the rear seats are moved forwards and
the separating panel is unlocked, the capacity
increases to up to litres.
The capacity of the BMW Series Gran Turismo is as impressive as its striking contours. Under

BMWwas one of the rst manufacturers to pursue the goal of efcient drive technologies, as part
of its multi-award-winning sustainability strategy. BMWEfcientDynamics, included as standard,
is a comprehensive technology package designed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions
while simultaneously enhancing dynamic performance. A winner of many technology awards, it
has enabled the BMWGroup to reduce the CO2 emissions of its European new-vehicle eet by
over 30 since 1995. Currently, 64 BMW models1 emit up to just 140g CO2/km, with 21 of them
producing no more than 120g. The BMW Group intends to achieve a further 25 reduction in
CO2 emissions by 2020.
Different paths to the same destination: unmistakable BMW driving pleasure. Under the
umbrella of the BMW EfcientDynamics project, BMW is continuously developing innovative
systems that will bring us closer to the long-term goal of emission-free mobility. This BMW
initiative for more driving pleasure is based on several pillars:
Technology package. The optimisation of vehicles powered by conventional diesel and petrol
engines continues apace. A comprehensive technology package, with innovations including BMW
TwinPower Turbo technology, ECO PRO mode and the Auto/Start Stop function, enables the
reduction of fuel consumption and emissions, while at the same time increasing power output and
driving enjoyment. And it all sets the standard in every BMW.
BMWActiveHybrid. The BMWActiveHybrid 3, the BMWActiveHybrid 5 and the BMWActiveHybrid 7
introduce impressive hybrid powertrain technology to the BMW range. All models combine
excellent efciency with high dynamics thanks to intelligent energy management.
BMWActiveE. Since 2011, there has been a newtype of dynamismon the road: the BMWActiveE.
Powered by electricity alone, it is manufactured in a small production run, as part of a pilot project. ln
this way, BMWis preparing the way for the emission-free mobility of tomorrow. The promise: 0
emissions, 100driving pleasure.2
BMWHydrogen. Since the 1980s, BMWhas had a pioneering role in developing hydrogen as a long-
termpossibility for emissions-free mobility. The BMWHydrogen 7, a luxury saloon with a hydrogen-
powered combustion engine, was presented in 2006.
BMWi. ln line with the guiding principles of BMWEfcientDynamics, the BMWi brand is developing
visionary newvehicle concepts for electric mobility such as the BMWi3 and the BMWi8. While
including existing BMWEfcientDynamics technologies, these vehicles also use innovations in
intelligent lightweight construction such as carbon. With a focus on sustainability through the entire
value chain and a range of additional mobility services, BMWis progressively redening the concept
of individual mobility.

Air vent control. When driving, engine management keeps you continually up to date with the
engines cooling capacity requirements, rendering a permanent airstream through the cooler
unnecessary. The air intakes upstream of the cooler open and shut depending on the driving and
the outside temperature. When theyre shut they improve aerodynamics, shorten the engines
warm-up time and so reduce fuel consumption.
Tyres with reduced rolling-resistance. While the car is in motion, the tyres are constantly
changing shape, using up energy and fuel. Tyres with reduced rolling-resistance have an
improved design and use special materials for their road treads and side walls, which reduces
deformation.
Brake Energy Regeneration. To supply the battery with electrical energy the generator is
continuously driven using engine power, which consumes more fuel. Brake Energy Regeneration
means that the generator usually only generates electricity when the driver brakes or takes
their foot off the accelerator previously unused kinetic energy is transformed in coasting mode
into electrical energy before being fed into the battery. This fuel-free charging process is
indicated by a symbol on the rev counter (page ).
BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. BMW TwinPower Turbo combines the latest injection
technologies for enhanced efciency with fully variable power distribution featuring innovative
turbocharging technology for a more dynamic ride.
Eight-speed automatic transmission. The particularly smooth gear shifts of the eight-speed
automatic transmission produce greater engine efciency at every speed. The result: a reduction
in fuel consumption of approximately %and more comfortable gear changes. It is combined
with the Auto Start/Stop function in all models. This allows the cars to offer even greater dynamics
and increased comfort with improved economy and lower emissions.
Auto Start/Stop function. All models are equipped with this function. When the car comes to
a brief stop, at trafc lights, for instance, Auto Start/Stop temporarily turns off the engine, thereby
reducing fuel consumption.

Add to that incredible efciency, achieved by the multi-award-winning technology package
BMWEfcientDynamics. What you get are masterpieces of ne engineering.
Sporty performance and outstanding efciency are the hallmarks of the BMW d. This
impressive ensemble is based on BMWTwinPower Turbo technology, a combination of CommonRail
direct injection and dual-stage turbocharging with variable turbine geometry that provides huge
thrust. The smooth-running and extremely responsive BMWTwinPower Turbo six-cylinder in-line
diesel engine summons up 230kW(313hp)* and outstanding pulling power. This means the car will
sprint from0 to 100km/h in only 5.7s (535d xDrive: 5.6s). Pioneering diesel technology also powers
the BMWd. Average fuel consumption of just 5.8 litres per 100km (530d xDrive: 6.2 litres)
and output of 190kW(258hp)* demonstrably illustrates the outstanding efciency of the six-
cylinder in-line diesel engine with its CommonRail direct injection and turbocharging with
variable turbine geometry. With maximum torque of 560Nm, this BMWunit takes the car from
0 to 100km/h in a mere 6.2 seconds. Whats more, when equipped with the BMWDiesel with
BluePerformance option, it already complies with the EU6 emissions standard, a directive
coming into force in 2014. Peak efciency: the new BMWTwinPower Turbo four-cylinder engine
in the BMW d. This delivers power output of 135kW (184hp)* and 360Nm of torque for
spontaneous pick-up while also offering excellent economy averaging 5.3 l/100km. The dash
from 0-100km/h: 8.9s. The BMW i combines a TwinScroll turbocharger with Valvetronic,
Double-VANOS and High Precision lnjection. This package of innovations ensures a signicant
reduction in fuel consumption as well as impressive performance gures: 225kW(306hp)*,
max torque of 400Nm, at the extremely low engine speed of just 1,200rpm, and powerful

four-wheel drive systemcombines the benets of a lightning-fast WD and the ground-breaking
dynamism of the BMW Series Gran Turismo. It noticeably increases the vehicles already
impressive traction and road holding even in inclement weather or on challenging road surfaces.
The intelligent xDrive four-wheel drive constantly evaluates the vehicles electronic data such as
wheel rotation speed, steering angle, yaw rate and engine torque and seamlessly divides drive
power between the front and rear axles. Electronics data allows the systemto determine whether
the vehicle is accurately reproducing the directions provided by the steering wheel, or whether it
is tending to oversteer or understeer. When cornering, if the front wheels slide towards the outside
of the bend i.e. if the vehicle threatens to understeer the electronically controlled multi-plate
clutch transfers the drive power from the front to the rear wheels in the blink of an eye, thus
preventing understeering before it even happens. So you can enjoy the dynamic performance of

While youre driving, xDrive constantly assesses
the data provided by the vehicle sensors such
as wheel rotation speed, steering angle, yaw
rate and engine torque. So the systemalways
knows when to intervene and can instantly adjust
the distribution of drive power to the front and
rear axles to best suit the current driving situation.

At the push of a button, this standard feature
allows you to change the characteristics of
the BMW Series Gran Turismo to suit your
needs. The settings inuence elements such
as the responsiveness of the accelerator
and the power steering, so you can boost the
dynamism so typical of BMW. And with the
optional chassis adjustment systems, Adaptive
Drive and Dynamic Damper Control, the
damper settings can also be individually
selected, for an unsurpassed level of comfort
on longer journeys.
In the development of suspension and steering, BMWengineers pursue two seemingly contradictory
goals: on the one hand, passengers should be protected from uneven road surfaces, but on the
other, the driver must be able to feel direct contact with the road. Its this delicate balance that
produces the unparalleled BMW driving sensation. Comfort and dynamics should never be
mutually exclusive. Which is why weve been using the same proven design conventions for decades,
such as the rear-wheel drive and weight distribution of almost :. In the BMW Series
Gran Turismo these typical BMWprinciples are combined with cutting-edge control systems and
sophisticated suspension: the double-wishbone construction reduces longitudinal and lateral
forces on the front axle and simultaneously optimises contact with the road. In addition the rear
axle is tted with pneumatic suspension as standard. This automatically regulates the ground
clearance and suspension settings, thereby guaranteeing passenger comfort, safety and agility
whatever the load.

Adaptive Drive. This option combines two
active suspension control systems: Dynamic
Drive and Dynamic Damper Control, also
available separately. The latter allows you to
select individual shock absorber settings while
Dynamic Drive employs active stabilisers on
the front and rear axles. These reduce bodyroll
to a barely perceptible minimum for even more
relaxing journeys or undisturbed work.
Integral Active Steering. Integral Active
Steering is available as an option and
combines active steering rear wheels with
variable steering transmission on the
front axle. At speeds of up to km/h, the
rear wheels steer against the front axle. The
effectively shortened wheelbase improves
handling and agility. At speeds of km/h
and over, the rear wheels steer in the same
direction as the front wheels. The wheelbase
is thus virtually extended this increases
driving stability and gives the rear passengers
in particular an even easier ride.

rst glance. Its dynamic, owing contours lead the eye from the striking front and along the stretched bonnet of this extraordinary vehicle
a synthesis of exterior and interior. Each of the three levels of the interior stands for one of three BMW ConnectedDrive components

Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function. Optional, for added convenience and active safety in stop-and-go trafc. The
system measures the gap to the vehicle ahead on an ongoing basis and automatically maintains an appropriate distance. Once
the lane ahead becomes free, the systemaccelerates again up to the desired speed.
Park Assistant. This optional driver assistance systemmakes parallel parking easier. When travelling at speeds below km/h,
the systemmeasures any parking gaps the vehicle passes. When a big enough gap has been found, the Park Assistant will do the
steering, while the driver continues to operate the accelerator and brake pedals supported by acoustic signals and instructions
in the Control Display.
Park Distance, Surround View, Rear View camera. These optional systems enhance visibility of the area around the vehicle

BMWConnected App. For the rst time, you can nowuse apps in your BMW. With the Apps option, an iPhone and the free
BMWConnected App fromthe Apple App Store, youre no longer limited to just listening to local radio, your calendar is with you
all the time and youre always in contact with your friends. Using iDrive, you can easily select web radio stations fromaround the
world. You can also call up the latest status reports fromyour Facebook or Twitter accounts and viewupcoming appointments on
the Control Display, or even have themread to you through the audio systems speakers. Newfeatures include RSS feeds for
news and Wiki Local, which allows you to source Wikipedia information on your local area.
Internet preparation. Whether you need to check the balance in your bank account, place a bid on eBay or look something up

Full-colour BMWHead-Up Display. With this option, relevant driving information is projected directly in the drivers eld of vision
via a multi-coloured TFT display. For example, the BMWHead-Up Display can show navigation directions or your current speed.
More colours now make it easier to differentiate between general driving information, such as speed limits, and urgent warnings
such as pedestrians on the road (optional with BMWNight Vision). This helps the driver to concentrate on the road ahead, making
driving even safer.
BMWNight Vision with Pedestrian Recognition and Acute Warning. An optional infrared camera in the double kidney grille
detects people and animals up to a distance of metres and its images are shown on the Control Display. Pedestrian
Recognition also gives a visual warning to indicate if people are moving close to the road up to a distance of metres ahead.
This means that the driver can recognise potential danger signicantly earlier and react more quickly. The new Acute Warning
system helps in imminently critical situations, thereby offering even greater safety.
Lane Departure Warning system and Lane Change Warning system (both optional). At speeds above around km/h, the
Lane Departure Warning system registers lane markings. If the vehicle threatens to swerve out of its lane, the system warns the
driver through a slight vibration of the steering wheel. If the driver has activated the indicator meaning that the lane change is
intentional the warning is suppressed. By means of a visible alert in the exterior mirror, the Lane Change Warning system
warns the driver of a vehicle in the blind spot or approaching at speed.
Multifunctional Instrument Display. This optional system offers a unique visual representation of driving your BMWalong with
increased safety. For the rst time, the Driving Experience button can be used to select driving modes, with their tailored colour
coding and graphics, in the instrument panel. Comfort mode is the default display, ECO PRO accentuates economical driving and
Sport emphasises dynamism with new speed and rpm displays. This new digital presentation enhances safety, comfort and the
overall driving experience by providing clear focus increasing, for instance, magnication on specic information.

hand buttons are used to operate all Cruise
