Jazz Music
Originated in the New Orleans melting pot around the mid to late 1890's Resulted from a mixture of traditional African music, 18th and 19th century European classical music, blues, and ragtime

Uses scales that are not as commonly found in classical music (pentatonic and blues) Includes a wide variety of instruments such as brass (trombone, trumpet), woodwinds (saxophone), vocals, rhythm (drum set, steel drums, piano), and strings (bass, guitar) Sometimes uses more uncommon variants of instruments such as soprano saxophone Uses instruments differently than they had been historically used

White Society & Response to Jazz


At first, white society was not accepting of jazz music Many white musicians denied it came from African American Some went as far as to steal from African American musicians Soon, however, it became overwhelmingly popular with both groups It undeniably aided the first steps to equal rights for African Americans
