The 40th Provincial General Election began yesterday with the dissolution of the Legislature and the issuance of a writ of election to each of the 85 District Electoral officers throughout the province. Voting at district electoral offices is available from now until 4 pm on General Voting Day, Tues., May 14. Voters who are going to be out of the province during these 4 weeks can ask their District Electoral officer for a Vote by Mail package. Advance voting is available from 8am-8pm on Wed., May 8 through Sat., May 11. Advance voting locations are wheelchair accessible and you can vote at any advance voting location in the province. General voting is available 8am-8 pm on Tues., May 14. General voter registration is available until April 23, either at elections.bc.ca/ovr or by phone 1-800661-8683. You can also register when you go to vote. If you registe before April 23, youll get a Where to Vote card in the mail before the start of advance voting. All voters must prove their identity and residential address to get a ballot with a BC drivers licence, BCID Card, BC Services Card, Certificate of Indian Status, or 2 documents that contain your name, at least one must also contain your residential address. The 1st Provincial General Election was held oct-Dec 1871, when 25 Members of the Legislative Assembly were elected, in 12 electoral districts, with 46 candidates & less than 3000 registered voters. The 40th Provincial General Election is set for May 14, 2013, with 85 electoral districts, 1 MLA for each district, and 3,110,267 registered voters as of April 15.

While we would have loved Bruce Vogts live accompaniment to old black & white movies, we will also love to see our old friend Ken Leinweber at the keyboard of our grand piano again. Bruce, who was instrumental in fundraising events for the grand piano many years ago, had a serious health setback a few months back. And while on the road to recovery, he had to reconsider next weeks engagement. Lucky for us, we have Ken in our back pocket on a recall from his performance at the 20th anniversary Arts Council event. Ken is beloved for his old-time boogie woogie piano playing at all sorts of community events, including seniors homes, Baillie House, Lilac Festival and many other Arts Council events. Ken headlines next weeks 30th anniversary gala event, along with the MSS Jazz Band & the Nicola Valley Community Band. Admission is free, there is also a Black & White art exhibit, dancing, refreshments a grand celebration!
